Also a small date stamp to the table of contents page and a signature in a neat calligraphic script of the artist that previously owned the volume. This is the limited edition of 150 signed and numbered copies. This being copy # 145. There are 118 works catalogued and illustrated here in black & white. 12" high X 10" wide, unpaginated. br. Non mancava certo, a Edoardo Sanguineti una spiccata vocazione testamentaria, né un'ironica inclinazione a rappresentarsi, da poeta, in una posa loquacemente postuma. Mentre il tempo passa e ci inoltra in una condizione postuma a Sanguineti, il suo profilo di intellettuale si ingigantisce sempre più, e le sue opere continuano a rappresentare un corpus di straordinaria originalità nel panorama del XX secolo. A cinque anni dalla sua scomparsa, la città e l'Università di Bologna gli dedicarono un convegno internazionale di studi, intensamente voluto e organizzato da Niva Lorenzini, i cui atti sono contenuti in questo volume. Erano trascorsi dieci anni dal grande evento bolognese che il convegno evocava fin dal titolo, il "Ritratto del Novecento", maxi-installazione e performance audio-visiva realizzata con la regia di Giuseppe Bertolucci e Luisa Grosso, ma soprattutto immensa opera-testamento e insieme autoritratto di Sanguineti, che coinvolse centinaia di spettatori in cinque memorabili serate. E dunque questo è ancora "un ritratto", e ancora "in pubblico", perché legato al rapporto dell'autore con il teatro, con il cinema, con la voce, la recitazione, con tutto ciò, insomma, che è pubblico, e res publica.

Il nostro tempo ha negato la tensione di ogni uomo verso qualcosa di più grande, e forse di irraggiungibile, sostituendola con una cultura degradata e ristretta dove i diritti universali sono privi di concretezza e la libertà è intesa come semplice cancellazione di qualsiasi dovere. Ancora più dei diritti, sono invece proprio i doveri, verso se stessi e verso gli altri, ad ancorare l'uomo alla realtà e alla società in cui vive, evitando il rischio di sentirsi sradicati e in balia degli eventi. Secondo Simone Weil, voce inascoltata e profetica del XX secolo, interessarsi davvero del destino dell'uomo significa, quindi, prima di tutto aggrapparsi saldamente e rimanere fedeli alle proprie radici. Potrebbe sembrare un banale richiamo alle tradizioni; invece non è così, perché le radici dell'uomo hanno origine oltre la sfera temporale, nell'eterno e umanissimo desiderio di verità e di bene.

br. "È soprattutto sul bisogno di radicamento che si concentra l'attenzione di Simone Weil, 'il bisogno più importante e misconosciuto dell'anima umana, e tra i più difficili da definire'. Si è detto che ad esso non corrisponde un bisogno dialetticamente contrario. Il fatto è che il radicamento costituisce il terreno di coltura indispensabile per la soddisfazione degli altri bisogni, cosicché ad essi si oppone non un bisogno correlativo ma la sua negazione, la 'malattia dello sradicamento'. La difficoltà poi a definirlo è anche dovuta al grado elevato di sradicamento a cui la società contemporanea è pervenuta, fino a subirlo come uno stato quasi naturale. L'analisi puntuale dello sradicamento operaio, dello sradicamento contadino e di quello che Simone Weil chiama lo sradicamento geografico, determinato dalla sostituzione dell'idea di nazione a quella di territorio, città, insieme di villaggi, regione, ha lo scopo di rendere evidenti i caratteri della malattia del nostro tempo. Innanzitutto la perdita del senso, nella misura in cui esso si trova assorbito nella ragione di Stato [...] Quindi la distruzione di un rapporto pieno con il tempo e lo spazio, vale a dire con la propria storia e il proprio ambiente naturale; di qui il sentimento di discontinuità, frammentazione, estraneità, e in definitiva la riduzione della vita sociale a pura esteriorità." La rivelazione greca

br. All'età di sedici anni Simone Weil aveva già le idee chiare. Lo dimostrano questi scritti, tra cui spicca un tema composto al liceo. Weil commenta una vicenda storica: l'imperatore Alessandro è bloccato col suo esercito nel deserto, la stanchezza e la sete prostrano le truppe. Un soldato porta l'ultima acqua rimasta al grande condottiero, ma Alessandro la versa a terra per essere come i suoi soldati. In questo gesto Weil vede la forza dell'assoluto che strappa l'individuo alla sua singolarità e lo fa partecipare all'eterno. Già in questi saggi è presente quella mistica assoluta degli ultimi anni, che fa della voce di Weil un esempio unico nella storia del pensiero contemporaneo. Questi lavori giovanili preannunciano le imprese della filosofa che attraverserà senza risparmiarsi le esperienze della vita quotidiana, che andrà in fabbrica per conoscere la condizione operaia, che si farà investire dagli eventi. A guidarla non è solo il coraggio della gioventù, ma una forza morale che rimane la guida dei suoi anni più maturi.

Very slightly worn; corners slightly creased; small stain to blank lower margin not affecting image. Weill born in Dessau Germany became an American citizen in 1943. "He was one of the outstanding composers in the generation that came to maturity after World War I and a key figure in the development of modern forms of musical theatre. "By far the most widely reproduced of all Weill photographs it shows him seated at his Brook House desk immaculately dressed and freshly coiffured with chin thrust forward as in no other photograph and pen poised over a page that could almost be a balance-sheet but reveals itself in the better reproductions as a page from the rehearsal score of Street Scene. There is no remotely comparable picture and yet it is impossible to imagine one better suited to the purposes of documenting the 'image and understanding' of 'Weill in America' that has been so vigorously promoted by Brecht scholars in recent years - the image that is of one who was at home on Broadway but would have been equally so in the boardrooms of Wall Street or Madison Avenue . The imposture becomes 'genuine' through Weill's endorsement of its impersonal conformity in preference to the introspective and enigmatic figure portrayed not only by Hoyningen-Huene but also with uncharacteristic insight by Karsh himself in a second and quite unknown portrait taken at the same session in Brook House." Street Scene an opera in two acts by Kurt Weill to a libretto by Elmer Rice after his own play with lyrics by Langston Hughes and Rice premiered in Philadelphia at the Shubert Theatre on December 16 1946. The work opened in New York at the Adelphi Theatre on January 9 1947 and ran for 148 performances through May 17 1947. The present photograph was presumably used in association with the New York premiere. "Weill considered Street Scene his chef d'oeuvre . His musical concern was less with originality than with authenticity. The cloying sentimentality is a function of the drama. It also demonstrates how Weill adjusted his musical voice as the drama demanded. Street Scene contains European elements including allusions to Puccini even to Wagner. The drama demanded them too. The description 'American opera' nonetheless applies: it is an opera for America - that is for a Broadway public; and it is an opera about America both musically and in terms of plot."
