br. L'opera contiene due conferenze tenute da Whitehead all'Università di Chicago nel 1933. In quest'epoca egli aveva già elaborato compiutamente la sua concezione filosofica e aveva già pubblicato le sue opere più importanti. Così nel presente scritto ci da un rapido schizzo dell'intero sistema, riassumendo nella prima parte la sua critica del materialismo e nella seconda le sue vedute positive. L'argomento è trattato in forma quasi divulgativa, in modo che la trattazione può costituire una facile introduzione alle opere maggiori di Whitehead, che sono molto più oscure e difficili. Naturalmente non ci si può attendere qui un'esposizione adeguata del pensiero dell'autore: alcuni aspetti della sua filosofia vengono omessi; e importanti dottrine il cui sviluppo occupa altrove interi volumi vengono qui indicate in poche righe. Una conoscenza meno inadeguata richiederebbe la lettura di alcune almeno tra le opere fondamentali: lo studioso potrebbe ad esempio cominciare con "Il concetto della natura" e "La scienza e il mondo moderno" (entrambe tradotte in italiano) per passare quindi a "Process and reality" che resta l'opera capitale dell'autore.

brossura Matematico e fisico, e solo in seguito approdato alla filosofia, Whitehead ha ingaggiato un corpo a corpo radicale e costruttivo con l'empirismo, ha tenuto salda l'idea di realtà ma ce ne ha fatto vedere il lato non ingenuo: la realtà non è mai solo un fatto, è sempre una relazione, una rete di relazioni. Solo partendo da qui Whitehead crede che possiamo capire cosa è un'esperienza soggettiva. Vediamo un albero e ci serviamo della parola albero per indicarlo, ma un poeta potrebbe guardare gli alberi perché gli suggeriscano nuove parole.

br. Alfred North Whitehead è stato uno dei grandi logici e matematici del Novecento. Assieme a Bertrand Russell ha dato vita ai celebri tre volumi dei "Principia Mathematica", pubblicati fra il 1910 e il 1913. Nonostante ciò, Whitehead, nell'ambito della sua attività filosofica, ha duramente criticato l'uso indiscriminato dell'astrazione logico-matematica come strumento privilegiato per la conoscenza della realtà. Non sorprende, quindi, che l'analisi del rapporto fra natura e vita, uno dei momenti centrali dell'opera di Whitehead, sia diventata, a partire dagli anni '70 del Novecento, un punto di riferimento per studiosi e intellettuali attenti all'emergere delle questioni ecologiche e ambientali, e impegnati nella revisione delle basi concettuali dell'economia neoclassica. La lettura di questo testo e l'introduzione ad esso dedicata ci fanno capire perché.
