Illustrated with a frontispiece an allegorical plate and a facsimile letter from Victor Hugo small octavo pp xii 200 11 rather age-toned but otherwise very clean and tight original maroon pebble cloth slightly worn and rubbed. SCARCE. The title is about as direct as the rest of the book. The ramblings of this "crazy Frenchman at Albany" shed very little light on the actual events of his life but give an incredible sense of the energetic character of Louis Menand. There are exuberant paeans to his wife Adelaide whom he calls "Phanerogyne" meaning "remarkable woman" who died in 1890. There are rambling thoughts on the various revolutions and republics in France a scathing appraisal of his arrival in a free land "where slavery was flourishing as carnations" and tales of intrigues at flower exhibitions all told in the least linear style imaginable. He was the son of a gardener in Burgundy France. As early as he could remember he was fascinated by horticulture. "I was eight or nine years old" he later wrote "when I began to try to grow plants from cuttings. I have always been fond of cutting properly or figuratively speaking except cutting my fingers." Eventually Louis became an estate gardener in Paris and later in the Champagne region. In 1837 he came to New York and went to work at nurseries in Halett's Cove which would later become Astoria. There he met a young piano teacher from Albany named Adelaide Jackson. They fell in love and were married in her family home on Park Place in Albany and soon took up residence in what they called "the haunted house" on the Albany-Troy Road Broadway. Louis began selling plants. After a rough first year "more than modest that is to say meagre I might say miserable!!" things began to pick up. Menand had a fair collection of "hardy perennial plants" which had become pretty popular in the Albany/Troy area. Later he sold Norway spruces balsam firs and other popular trees and shrubs. In 1847 he was able to buy several acres of land on what is now Menand Road where Ganser-Smith Park is now located for his greenhouses and nursery. He cultivated plants that no doubt had never before been seen in this old Dutch town -- camellias palm ferns cacti and orchids among others. He was noted for importing exotic plants from Europe and commanded an impressive price for his best camellias: "a little plant four inches high would sell for $25." Menand won significant awards for his plants through the years and continued to grow. He bought 31 acres near the entrance to Albany Rural Cemetery where he set up his son with a half dozen hot houses devoted to growing cut flowers roses carnations pansies geraniums and "an almost endless variety of other species suitable for cemetery decoration." These included all manner of shrubs which no doubt still influence the scenery in the cemetery. His greenhouses were so popular that the Albany and Northern Railroad added a stop there in 1856 named "Menand's Crossing" which the succeeding Delaware and Hudson Railroad renamed "Menand's Station." . Small octavo pp xiv 376 illustrated with 19 engraved plates fore-edge a little thumbed but otherwise very clean and crisp internally marbled endpapers contemporary full polished calf a thin decorated gilt line around the borders a little marked and worn the spine gilt decorated with raised bands lacking the top 25mm of the spine and lacking small portions at the top of each joint the joints cracking slightly. still an attractive copy. In Vegetable Staticks Hales studied transpiration - the loss of water from the leaves of plants. He estimated the surface area of the leaves of the plant and the length and surface area of the roots. This allowed Hales to compare the calculated influx of water into the plant with the amount of water leaving the plant by transpiration through the leaves. He also measured 'the force of the sap' or root pressure. Hales commented that "plants very probably draw through their leaves some part of their nourishment from the air". He prefigured the cohesion theory of water movement in plants although his ideas were not understood at the time so he did not influence the debate on water transport in plants in the 19th century. He also speculated that plants might use light as a source of energy for growth i.e. photosynthesis based on Isaac Newton’s suggestion that "gross bodies and light" might be interconvertible. He also describes experiments that showed that "air freely enters plants not only with the principal fund of nourishment by the roots but also thro’ the surface of their trunks and leaves". While Hales’ work on the chemistry of air appears primitive by modern standards its importance was acknowledged by Antoine Lavoisier the discoverer of oxygen. Hales’ invention of the pneumatic trough to collect gases over water is also considered a major technical advance. RARE. An appendix was published four years later. Thomas Purton was a surgeon who practised in London and in Alcester. He is particulalrly remembered for his mycological collections. This work was praised by Sir James Smith for its accuracy but a little damned by Sir Charles Hastings for "its interminable additions corrections and appendices". Blanche Henrey 1255 devoting a page of text and three illustrations to it - "long remained popular and quotations from it are to be found in many 17th and 18th century books on English gardening". This third English editiuon is the only one to include the extra plate. It was originally published in France in 1665. A duplicate from Worthing Reference Library with their attractive bookplate in each volume; a neat small circular stamp in the corner of each plate on the title pages and the occasional text page a shelf number on the spines. A cornerstone of fossil flora literature. The work served to catalogue many of the fossil plants recognized by the 1830s from Britain ranging in age from Carboniferous to Pleistocene. Together with contributions from Henslow Murray and Williamson Lindley and Hutton described illustrated and in some cases emended almost 300 species with many of their type and figured specimens having survived. By giving the first illustrated account of the microscopic structure of a fossil cuticle together with discussions about the origin of coal prehistoric climates experimental taphonomy and plant evolution "The Fossil Flora" was much more than a catalogue of fossil plants. Lindley must surely rank amongst his palaeobotanical contemporaries for having pioneered aspects of the science that remain topics of active research into the third millennium. First Edition. Illustrated with many hundreds of half-page woodcuts. pp 14 922 13 the title page is laid down and has slight losses the next leaf is restored at the corner with no loss of text the preliminary index is a bit thumbed and marked a little marginal staining to the last hundred pages a little marginal staining and marking on occasional pages but overall very firm and tight and in better condition than many copies. There are very neat early manuscript notes on many pages mainly limited to the common English names. Contemporary simple lined calf rebacked and with new endpapers in the early twentieth century with the original spine laid down. An inked paper title label on the spine. The Hartland Library copy with labels and manuscript notes attached to the front endpapers. RARE. The Library was formed by Edwin Sydney Hartland and was a diverse but major collection of herbals archaeology and anthropology. It was donated to Gloucestershire County Council in 1936 and was eventually dispersed around 2010. This the first edition of a digest of Mattioli's commentaries on Dioscorides expressed in the form of an encyclopedia of plants giving synonyms classification description locale and medicinal qualities and uses. A careful student of botany he described 100 new plants and coordinated the medical botany of his time in his Discorsi "Commentaries" on the Materia Medica of Dioscorides. The first edition of Mattioli's work appeared in 1544 in Italian. In addition to identifying the plants originally described by Dioscorides Mattioli added descriptions of some plants not in Dioscorides and not of any known medical use thus marking a transition from the study of plants as a field of medicine to a study of interest in its own right. In addition the woodcuts in Mattioli's work were of a high standard allowing recognition of the plant even when the text was obscure. A noteworthy inclusion is an early variety of tomato the first documented example of the vegetable being grown and eaten in Europe. There is also an early illustration of a coconut. First Edition.
