Insignis Sophiae Arcator Medieval Latin Studies in Honour of Michael Herren on his 65th Birthday

Some thirty years ago Michael Herren burst on the medieval Latin scene with his edition and translation of the notoriously difficult Hisperica Famina, and followed this a few years later with his translation of the prose works of Aldhelm. Notice was given that a junior scholar, unafraid to tackle some of the most obscure, complex, and arcane Latin, wished to make it accessible to non-Latinists as well as to those Latinists who lacked his particular skills. Not content with labouring alone in that field, Herren gathered scholars in Toronto to a conference on 'Insular Latin Studies,' the proceedings of which he published two years later. Over the years he shed considerable light on such obscure texts and authors as Virgilius Maro Grammaticus, John Scottus Eriugena, and the Cosmographia by the pseudonymous Aethicus Ister. His research trail led him again and again to Ireland, and the Irish contribution to early medieval Latinity and to English, Carolingian, and even Italian culture. Recognizing the rich diversity of medieval Latin, Herren in 1990 founded The Journal of Medieval Latin and has, as its editor, provided a home for medieval Latinists of all stripes. The fourteen colleagues and former students who have contributed to the present volume wish to express their thanks to Herren for creating a venue in which medieval Latinists can come together, exchange ideas, learn from each other, and teach each other. In their careers, they have all learned from Herren who either supervised their theses or performed editorial magic on articles submitted to The Journal of Medieval Latin. The essays here gathered focus, though not exclusively, on the insular Latin of Ireland and England, as well as on some Irish centres on the Continent such as St. Gall. The Hisperica Famina, so strongly associated with Herren, though mentioned only in passing by some of the studies here, provides the half-line which was chosen as the title and the most suitable address to Herren: insignis sophiae arcator ' 'excellent teacher of wisdom.' This particular intersection deserves attention from those interested in music, the reception of classical Latin literature, the history of education, and the development of punctuation. Between the late tenth century and the late twelfth century, the musical notation known as neumes was provided in dozens of manuscripts for, among other texts, a number of Horace's Odes as well as for sections of epics by Lucan, Statius, and Vergil. These materials constitute a paradoxical corpus of "classical poems in plainchant" that complicates our views of both how students learned Latin and what was being sung in an era most often associated with Gregorian chant. The book wrestles first with the literary-historical puzzle of why certain passages and not others were "neumed" and later with the ethnomusicological riddles of how, where, when, and by whom the passages were sung. Le present ouvrage met a la disposition d'un large public les premiers textes de l'ordre, dont le noyau est forme par la Charte de charite (Carta caritatis). Les autres textes sont l'Exordium Cistercii, l'Exordium parvum, les premieres decisions des chapitres generaux, ou certaines bulles papales. Space, Place and Ornament: the Function of Landscape in Medieval Manuscript Illumination

The present volume analyzes the functions of landscape imagery within medieval Northern European manuscript illumination, and also takes into account the ideological and the economic milieus in which they were produced. This book proposes a new methodological framework for the study of medieval landscape imagery, by analyzing the functions of landscape imagery within Northern European manuscript illumination. Taking a historicist approach, this study explores landscape imagery within a broad range of specific manuscript contexts, taking into account the ideological and the economic milieus in which they were produced. Organized into three sections, this study will look at how landscape functioned as ornament, didactic tool (space) and political tool (place). The first section looks at the role that landscape imagery had in the hierarchy of book decoration, and how it responded to late medieval mnemonic systems and devotional practices. It also addresses the emergence of landscape as a form of ornamental elaboration, sometimes as a means to appeal to specific aesthetic criteria, or as a way to create extra-textual associations to augment the message of the text. The second section is concerned with landscape within encyclopedic and allegorical manuscripts, and will analyze how artists constructed space to communicate specific lessons or ideas, for example to frame debates about the role of agricultural labor or to present the dynastic ambitions of the Burgundian court. Finally, the third section explores the visualization of the political and economic landscape of late medieval Europe, particularly focusing on how landscape was structured to respond issues of status, power and identity not only in works created for the landed nobility but within manuscripts made for urban patrons as well. Concentrating on manuscripts from Paris, Northern France and Flanders from the late thirteenth to the early sixteenth centuries, this book will offer new insights as it contextualizes the emergence of landscape painting in the late middle ages. Ecrite en anglo-normand, vers 1165, elle temoigne de l'influence de l'Angleterre dans le developpement du culte marial et l'eclosion de la litterature francaise. Ce genre litteraire connaitra un succes considerable dans toute l'Europe. Il s'agit de montrer que si Adgar condamne la litterature profane pour ses mensonges et son immoralite, il sait tout de meme en retirer une lecon de ?«sagesse et de courtoisie?». Son oeuvre s'adresse a un public ?«frivole?», mais exigeant. Il faut que cette litterature pieuse puisse rivaliser, par son agrement, avec la litterature courtoise de son temps et depasser les Vies de saints par son homogeneite et sa variete. Le texte latin est traduit en francais moderne, afin que le lecteur puisse constater les enjeux d'une impossible fidelite. Quelques miracles d'Adgar sont enfin compares a ceux de ses confreres romans, notamment le plus brillant d'entre eux, Gautier de Coinci.

Apollonius, roi de Tyr aussi bien que marieur au debut du roman, fuit les hommes du roi d?Antioche qui veulent le tuer a cause de son interpretation d?une devinette que le roi lui a posee. Apres avoir perdu tous ses biens dans un naufrage, il est recueilli par le roi de Cyrene, qui le charge d?instruire sa fille. La princesse tombe amoureuse de son maitre jusqu?au point d?en etre malade ; le roi apprecie beaucoup le jeune homme et par consequent lui donne sa fille en mariage. C?est ainsi que les aventures du protagoniste du roman peuvent se poursuivre en suivant une autre pente. Le developpement narratif est condense dans toutes les versions latines, elles-memes etant des traductions supposees d?une version originale grecque. C?est en France toutefois que le roman eut le plus grand succes, car parmi les traductions en langues vernaculaires se trouvent aussi huit versions francaises. La version que nous publions ici est une traduction assez fidele du texte latin. Intitulee d?apres l?incipit ?« La cronique et histoire des mervilleuses aventures de Appolin roy de Thir ?», elle a ete conservee dans un seul manuscrit, le Londres, British Library, Royal 20 C II.

Informing the relationship between Latin and the vernaculars was the choice of Latin as the language of the Western Roman Empire and the Roman Church. This choice entailed the possibility of a shared literary culture and heritage across Europe, but also had consequences for access to that heritage. Scholarship on the Romance languages has contested the relevance of the term diglossia, and the divergence between written or spoken Latin and Romance is a subject of energetic debate. In other linguistic areas, too, questions have been voiced. How can one characterize the interaction between Latin and the various vernaculars, and between the various vernaculars themselves? To what extent could speakers from separate linguistic worlds communicate? These questions are fundamental for anyone concerned with communication, the transmission of learning, literary history, and cultural interaction in the Middle Ages. Schasz een satirisch reisverslag waarin hij zijn lezers mee neemt op een hilarische tocht door het apenland. De inwoners, allen genummerd, leggen ondeugden aan de dag die bepaald menselijk zijn. Maar misschien komt dat wel doordat ze verlangen mensen te worden. Na talloze vergadersessies besluiten de apen uiteindelijk tot 'generale afkapping' van staarten, een zelfverminking die Schasz met een onverschrokken humor plastisch beschrijft. De Reize door het Aapenland kende anno 1788 slechts een bescheiden succes. Dat moest haast wel, omdat deze satire naar de maat van de eigen tijd wel erg scabreus was en veel te raden liet, ook naar de identiteit van de auteur. Was deze zonderlinge doctor misschien eigenlijk Pieter 'tHoen of Gerrit Paape? Intrigerender is de vraag waartegen de tekst zich doodleuk keerde. Of houdt de Reize door het Aapenland ons misschien gewoon een spiegel voor over zotheid die van alle tijden is? Door de heruitgave van P.J. Buijnsters uit 1973 kon een verse lichting lezers in de doldwaze apenkolonie op zoek naar de overeenkomsten en verschillen met de mensenwereld. De Reize door het Aapenland werd al snel een satirische klassieker, ook in het middelbaar en universitair onderwijs en het succes duurt voort. De laatste editie, bezorgd door Peter Altena, is inmiddels ook aan herdruk toe. Doctor Schasz, wie hij ook moge zijn, blijft ons overrompelen en provoceren om in gelach uit te barsten over onze alledaagse ijdelheden.

Metaphysics in the Twelfth Century, On the Relationship among Philosophy, Science and Theology

Although metaphysics as a discipline can hardly be separated from Aristotle and his works, the questions it raises were certainly known to authors even before the reception of Aristotle in the thirteenth century. Even without the explicit use of this term the twelfth century manifested a strong interest in metaphysical questions under the guise of "natural philosophy" or "divine science", leading M.-D. Chenu to coin the expression of a twelfth century "eveil metaphysique". In their commentaries on Boethius and under the influence of Neoplatonism, twelfth century authors not only anticipate essential elements of thirteenth century metaphysics, they also make an original contribution to the history of metaphysics by attempting to integrate the theory of first principles, philosophical theology and ontology. This volume presents and examines the contributions of the twelfth century to metaphysics made by selected Jewish, Christian and Muslim authors of the Iberian Peninsula and Francia. Die Metaphysik als Disziplin ist untrennbar verbunden mit Namen und Werk des Aristoteles, doch sind die von ihr verfolgten Fragestellungen, wenn auch zunachst nicht unter dieser Bezeichnung, bereits den Autoren vor der Aristoteles-Rezeption des 13. Jahrhunderts bekannt. So lasst sich insbesondere im 12. Jahrhundert ein starkes Interesse an genuin metaphysischen Fragen, die unter den Titeln der Naturphilosophie oder der gottlichen Wissenschaft behandelt werden, ausmachen, das M.-D. Chenu dazu gefuhrt hat, von einem "eveil metaphysique" in diesem Jahrhundert zu sprechen. Die Reflexionen der Autoren des 12. Jahrhunderts zu diesem Themenkomplex, die sich vor allem aus der Kommentierung des Boethius und den Einflussen des Neoplatonismus speisen, antizipieren nicht nur wesentliche Elemente der metaphysischen Diskussionen des 13. Jahrhunderts, sondern liefern mit ihrem Vermittlungsversuch von Prinzipientheorie, philosophischer Gotteslehre und Ontologie zugleich einen eigenstandigen Beitrag zur Geschichte der Metaphysik. Im vorliegenden Band soll dieser Beitrag des 12. Jahrhunderts anhand ausgewahlter judischer, christlicher und muslimischer Autoren der Iberischen Halbinsel und der Francia dargestellt und untersucht werden. A cette production, viennent s'ajouter les fruits meme de la scolastique, a savoir les summae, les quodlibeta, les quaestiones et les commentaires. Ce volume recense pour la premiere fois toutes les listes de taxation et des exemplaria decouverts jusqu'a nos jours, depuis ceux connus depuis longtemps, provenant des universites de Paris, Bologne, Padoue etc., jusqu'aux moins connus conserves actuellement a Uppsala, Dubrovnik, Olomouc, Autun, Montpellier, Greiswald etc. Les sources documentaires rassemblees attestent la diffusion par exemplar et pecia de plus de 600 oeuvres. La seconde partie du livre contient la description de 900 oeuvres extraites des sources documentaires ou attestees dans des manuscrits portant des indications de pecia et exemplaria. Il s'agit non seulement de textes en usage dans les facultes de theologie, de philosophie, de medecine et de droit, mais aussi des oeuvres qui ne faisaient pas partie du curriculum normal des etudes, a savoir la Legenda de Jacques de Voragine, les epistolae de Pierre de la Vigne, des summae confessorum, des summae sermonum et des encyclopedies. Ce corpus comprend la description de plus de 2800 manuscrits a pieces et exemplaria - 1800 provenant d'un index inedit du fichier de Destrez -. Transportes dans les lieux d'origine des etudiants, pour la plupart clercs, formes dans les universites italiennes et francaises, les manuscrits actuellement conserves dans toutes les regions d'Europe (de l'Espagne a la Finlande, de l'Angleterre a la Pologne), constituent le temoignage materiel et culturel le plus concret de l'extraordinaire vitalite intellectuelle des 13e et 14e siecles. Cet ouvrage constitue donc un instrument de travail irremplacable et de premiere main, non seulement pour les specialistes des manuscrits, mais aussi pour tous les medievistes.
