The Paper Museum ('Museo Cartaceo') is a collection of some 10,000 drawings and prints assembled during the seventeenth century by the Roman patron and collector, Cassiano dal Pozzo, and his younger brother, Carlo Antonio. It represents one of the most significant attempts before the age of photography to embrace human knowledge in visual form, documenting ancient art and culture, architecture and topography, natural history and social customs. The 160 drawings catalogued in this volume are derived from five ancient manuscripts: the famous Vatican Vergil, the so-called 'Roman' Vergil, the Vatican Terence, and the less well-known Palatine Agrimensores, all in the Vatican Library, and from a fifth codex, now lost, known as the Chronography or Calendar of the year 354. The bulk of the drawings were copied for Cassiano between 1632 and 1634 for the purpose of studying both the characters depicted and the allied evidence of ancient costume and artefacts. By the later seventeenth century, when Pietro Santi Bartoli executed the last group of drawings in the present volume for Carlo Antonio, manuscript illustrations had come to be cherished as much for their rarity as examples of ancient painting as for their documentary value. Introductory essays provide an overview of the dal Pozzo commissions, the manuscripts and their history down to Cassiano's day, as well as their study in the wider context of classical scholarship through to the eighteenth century. All the drawings are reproduced in colour at full page, with accompanying descriptions of the subjects or relevant ancient verses in modern translation and brief commentaries. Languages : English.

The first volume to appear in the Natural History series catalogues a group of spectacular drawings of citrus fruit in watercolour and gouache, most of which were commissioned to illustrate Giovanni Battista Ferrari's Hesperides, an ambitious attempt at a complete taxonomy and classification of the entire citrolgical world, which was published in Rome in 1646. Cassiano dal Pozzo played a fundamental role in this project: it was he who commissioned and supplied most of the drawings and then arranged for them to be engraved for Ferrari's projected work. The citrus drawings - grouped in the Catalogue under the headings of citrons, lemons, oranges, pummelos, hybrids, monstro sities and unidentified citrus fruit - are reproduced in full colour and are accompanied by a wealth of comparative material which includes the Hesperides engravings, additional drawings and photographs of actual specimens, mainly of the monstrous kind. In addition to detailed scientific descriptions of the specimens themselves, the catalogue also gives art historical information on watermarks, annotations, types of mount, provenance and literature. The introductory essays explain Cassiano's method of gathering information from a network of correspondents around Europe and consider the relationship between these drawings and other natural history subjects commissioned by Cassiano. The authors discuss the work of the artists involved in the project and assess the major contribution made the classification of citrus fruit by the collaborative efforts of Cassiano of Ferrari. These three volumes catalogue the extensive corpus of mycological drawings in the Paper Museum of Cassiano dal Pozzo. Executed mostly in watercolour between 1625 and 1630 and depicting fungi native to Umbria and the environs of Rome, they constitute the first sustained attempt to survey all the larger fungi of a region, recording in detail the stages of their growth. Laden with notes on colour, smell, taste, weight, season and the locality in which the specimens had been found, the almost six hundred folios were commissioned by Federico Cesi (1585-1630), founder of Europe?s first scientific academy, the Accademia dei Lincei. They were acquired by Cassiano dal Pozzo after Cesi?s death and were greatly admired by those who saw them in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Thought to have been lost until their rediscovery in 1979 in the library of the Institut de France in Paris, the drawings are also remarkable for their pioneering use of the microscope, a novel instrument given to Cesi in 1624 by Galileo and used throughout the pages of these manuscripts to enhance the direct observation of nature. Also included are drawings of fungi commissioned by Cassiano and his brother Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo now in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, and an early set of copies of the Cesi originals in the library of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Each drawing is reproduced in colour with accompanying text, and two introductory essays discuss the scientific investigations and collecting activities of Cesi and Cassiano and the importance of these drawings in the history of science and art. Copies au VIIe s., semble-t-il, ces palimpsestes albaniens revelent l'un, un texte lacunaire de l'Evangile de Jean emaille, en marge, de six annotations liturgiques et de tirets renvoyant peut-etre aux sections eusebiennes et a un lecture continue de Jean au Temps pascal ; l'autre, une compilation desordonnee de pericopes bibliques provenant presque toutes d'une traduction d'un lectionnaire grec de Jerusalem des annees 450-614. Sous-jacent a cette compilation, dont le but reste obscur, apparait un authentique lectionnaire liturgique albanien qui a pu etre utilise en Albanie du Caucase des apres 450. Ce document est caracterise par le souci d'attenuer une dependance, non seulement vis-a-vis du lectionnaire hierosolymitain, mais aussi par rapport aux lectionnaires armenien et georgien fideles a la tradition hagiopolite. La compilation du second palimpseste repond-elle a l'intention de composer par la suite un lectionnaire albanien encore plus distinct des textes jerusalemite, armenien et georgien, l'Eglise albanienne ayant souvent manifeste a l'egard des Eglises armenienne et georgienne un desir d'autonomie, voire meme d'autocephalie. La recherche des sources autour d'un commanditaire ou d'un artisan, d'un copiste ou d'un ?« chasseur ?» de manuscrits, cette demarche de vouloir identifier l'identifiable devient alors ineluctable. L'auteur nous propose ici ses notes de bibliologie dont une large part tient au domaine breton, reste ouvert aux multiples echanges artistiques. Du seigneur bibliophile au prelat, arguant de sa notoriete, du bourgeois aise, avide de reconnaissance sociale, au ?« maistre ?» universitaire, le livre manuscrit est presentement mis en valeur, a l'exemple de ces Heures, ces livres de prieres enlumines si populaires au Moyen Age, objet de pratiques devotionnelles. L'histoire de la societe medievale ne peut s'ecrire sans le livre et l'image. L'image partout presente. L'image language. Au-dela de cette precieuse iconographie, le texte nous devoile parfois les origines d'un manuscrit reste anonyme : une liturgie propre, le culte d'un saint local, aident ainsi a son identification. L'histoire des textes comme l'histoire des images reste inseparable de l'histoire des livres qui les transmettent. Mais derriere le livre se cache aussi l'homme. Destinataire ou collectionneur, copiste ou enlumineur, imprimeur, toutes ces personnalites s'inserent dans un vaste shema ou chacun laisse inevitablement ses empreintes. Dans ces notes de bibliologie, chaque livre prend place en une trame culturelle comme un maillon du savoir. Source d'interrogations multiples, le manuscrit illustre son epoque. Cette compilation demontre a n'en pas douter son importance au sein de la societe medievale, a une epoque ou il atteint la mouvance des litterati laics, et penetre les premieres ?« librairies ?». En effet, si l'on met de cote les ouvrages pionniers d'A. Grabar (Martyrium, 1946), axes sur l'histoire de l'architecture religieuse de l'Antiquite tardive, et de A. Frolow sur La relique de la Vraie Croix (1961) qui concerne surtout le monde byzantin, il a fallu attendre la fin des annees 1970, avec les livres de Patrick Geary sur les vols de reliques (Furta sacra. Thefts of Relics in the Central Middle Ages, 1978) et de Martin Heinzelmann sur les recits de translation (Translationsberichte und andere Quellen des Reliquienkultes, 1979) pour que l'importance de ces "fragments d'eternite" presents au coeur des societes medievales et modernes commence a etre bien percue. Encore les grandes syntheses ou la centralite des reliques dans l'univers et la vie des hommes de ce temps est nettement affirmee sont-elles assez recentes, qu'il s'agisse de l'ouvrage d'Arnold Angenendt (Heiligen und Reliquien, 1994), des actes du colloque de Boulogne-sur-Mer sur Les reliques. Objets, cultes, symboles, edites par E. Bozoky et A. M. Helvetius (1999), ou encore du vaste panorama brosse par H. Van Os dans The Way to Heaven. Relics Veneration in the Middle Ages (2000). Sous l'heureuse influence de ces auteurs et de quelques autres dont l'enumeration risquerait de transformer cette introduction en un palmares fastidieux, une prise de conscience s'est operee au niveau europeen parmi les chercheurs, et en particulier les plus jeunes, comme en temoignent la richesse et la variete du bouquet de contributions, ecrites dans diverses langues, que la revue Pecia a reunies sur le theme des reliques dans le present volume... ?». Le present ouvrage examine comment, en contexte occitan, cette question sociolinguistique s'articule et s'affirme dans la representation litteraire de la femme, de la feminite et de la mort. Rediges entre la fin du dix-neuvieme siecle et la deuxieme moitie du vingtieme siecle, les textes etudies - poemes, romans, discours, souvenirs, piece de theatre - sont ceux de quatre femmes auteurs, Philadelphe de Gerde (Claude Duclos-Requier), Calelhon (Julienne Fraysse-Seguret), Clardeluno (Jeanne Barthes) et Farfantello (Henriette Dibon). Membres du Felibrige, celles-ci ont choisi d'ecrire en occitan a une epoque ou l'usage de cette langue decroit rapidement. La lecture qui est ici proposee retient trois considerations. La premiere est strategique : il s'agit d'observer par quels moyens litteraires se conjuguent la promotion de la langue, la reflexion sur la mort et la mise en scene de personnages feminins. Parmi les pratiques qui illustrent et developpent cette problematique figurent la description de paysages, le projet autobiographique, la reecriture de legendes ou d'anciens poemes, le travail documentaire, et jusqu'a l'auto-traduction. Deuxiemement, la mise en fiction de la mort de la langue souleve la question de la portee de cet engagement socioculturel, car, devenu litteraire, celui-ci est expose a des enjeux qui le depassent et qui touchent, par exemple, au traitement de la condition feminine dans la fiction, a l'elitisme qu'evoque et nourrit la litterature, ou encore a l'autorite de la voix individuelle dans la defense d'une cause qui concerne, en fait, tout un groupe. Breviari d'amor de Matfre Ermengaud vol. IV

The Breviari d'Amor dates from 1288 (and was probably completed around 1292), is about 34,500 lines long and written in octosyllabic rhyming couplets. It exists in twelve full or almost full manuscripts and twelve fragments. It is written in Medieval Occitan and is the product in part of a long theological tradition and in part of the courtly tradition. This is the first edition to be published since the two-volume work of Gabriel Azais (1862-1881), which was of great merit for its time, but used only four of the manuscripts. The numbering of the present edition follows that of Azais, given the many works which allude to the Breviari. This didactic text has necessarily been labeled as "encyclopaedic" and this is certainly not a matter of dispute, although, in terms of the subject matter, it is very unusual since the emphasis is not only theological but also courtly. It conforms to the general perspective adopted by summae but the particular integration of the theological aspects with the debate on the nature of fin'amor makes it unique. Three volumes of text have been published, each with a selective glossary and bibliography, volume V (1976), which gives the final 7,000 odd lines with identification of the troubadour quotations (and a few others from the Old French trouvere tradition and from the non-lyric Occitan genres) and adds, in an Appendix, the letter of Matfre to his sister. This volume is now out of print, but a new edition, which adds a French translation, will be published very soon. The succeeding volumes respect the linear tradition of the Breviari, vol. II (1989), the first 8,800 lines, vol. III (1998), the next 8,000 approximately, published in the Publications de l'A.I.E.O. The present volume, vol. IV, completes the text and ends at line 27252, taking the reader up to the beginning of volume V, which itself ends at line 34597. It deals with the nature of sin and its manifestation according to the classes and professions of society, and then examines the fundamental Christian virtue of love of one's neighbour. The concept of the tree of life is treated along with the three theological virtues, the four cardinal virtues and the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. The matter of faith is discussed and six of the articles of the Credo. The volume ends with a treatise on the lives of the apostles, Andrew, John the Baptist and Thomas. It is hoped that publication of volume VI, an exhaustive glossary (probably with a CD ROM of the text) will appear in the next three years, and, shortly after, volume I, the Introduction, to complete this huge enterprise. Il en resulte la proposition de developper un occitan standard -ou "occitan larg"- qui se decline en sept varietes regionales, etroitement coordonnees: gascon, limousin, auvergnat, vivaro-alpin, provencal general, nicois et languedocien. La premiere partie analyse les enjeux sociaux, les mythes de la diglossie et les travaux anterieurs de codification. La deuxieme partie explore les ressources du diasysteme (correspondances entre les dialectes). La troisieme expose les principes de l'elaboration des dictionnaires, de la codification et du completement (neologismes, formation savante, emprunts). La derniere partie detaille plusieurs applications concretes: formes grammaticales, lexique de base, noms propres, feminisation des noms de metiers, abreviations et terminologie. Cet ouvrage comble un vide dans les etudes occitanes: il apporte une reponse claire et systematique a des questions normatives qui etaient jusque la bien complexes. Visitors to the Isle de Lerins, just off Cannes, can see not only the island but also what today is a Cistercian abbey founded about 410 A.D. by St. Honoratus (350-429), hermit, monk and bishop of Arles. Scarcely nothing has changed physically, and the wild unforgiving landscape of the place explains the nature of many of the events described in this verse text, especially the terrifying massacre of the community after the death of Honoratus, which contains horrifying details very rare in mediaeval narratives. Given the importance of this story, based on nine manuscripts, it is astonishing that a complete edition has not appeared before this date. The late Ingegard Suwe Ericsson, a Swedish scholar, had undertaken an edition of the first two books, approximately the first half of the work, for her doctorate, published in 1943, in a volume which is naturally difficult to find in libraries. Thereafter, she had hoped to create a complete edition, but, sadly, her profession as a teacher, the care she gave her husband and, in later years, her own ill-health prevented her from continuing the work. In 1988, she contacted Regina af Geijerstam, emeritus professor of Spanish, University of Stockholm, to ask if she would find an editor who would finish the work, for which Suwe Ericsson had a text of the last three books. In 1989, Peter Ricketts made the journey to Ostersund, where Suwe Ericsson was living, and he decided to undertake the work himself. She died in 1991. In 2000, Cyril Hershon offered his support to bring the whole project to fruition, and the edition will shortly be ready to go to press. Not only have Association Internationale d?Etudes Occitanes and Brepols given their approval for the publication of the second half of the work, dealing with the miracles performed by Honoratus after his death, but also for the addition of the work of Ingegard Suwe Ericsson, to give the mediaeval Occitan work in its entirety in one volume. Ingegard Suwe Ericsson?s 1943 edition has been respected, apart from the occasional correction to the text. Her introduction considers the manuscript tradition, the language of the scribe in a full linguistic analysis, with examples taken from the first 4127 lines, and only minor elements, such as a resume in French of this part and a list of errors found in the venerable edition by Sardou have been omitted. Thereafter, there is a complete integration of the first and second parts: the text, accompanied by footnotes, followed by notes to the text, a selective glossary, a table of proper names, and an updated bibliography. The whole is a text which repays reading and will fill a gap in the repertoire of important mediaeval texts. Languages : French, Occitan.

The Costume emphasizes the power of the local city council, which often seems to override that of the local count. Edward Lye (1694-1767) was an important contributor to the advancement of our understanding of the structure of the English language, its vocabulary, and its literature. Compared with the work of more celebrated pre-nineteenth-century Anglo-Saxonists and antiquaries, Lye's was a scholarly output of less original talent and reach (the role he gave himself was to 'remove the rubbish out of the way, as an underworkman'), but in the course of editing, improving, and publishing the hitherto unpublished work of others he made genuine advances in scholarship, particularly in the areas of English lexicography and Gothic studies. The Lye correspondence - in the main a collection of scholarly letters that are also sometimes the personal communications of friends - indicates how varied his interests were, how widely he read, and how frequently he discussed texts, elucidated cruces, and established correct textual readings, often for the first time. This edition presents the 193 letters known to have passed between Edward Lye and forty-five correspondents between 1729 and Lye's death in 1767. English translations are provided for letters written in Latin, Greek, and Swedish, as well as for words and passages in other languages (e.g. Old English, Gothic, Hebrew) discussed in the correspondence. The introduction provides a biography of Lye and a detailed examination of his major scholarly accomplishments: the edition of Franciscus Junius's Etymologicum Anglicanum, published in 1743 with extensive improvements and additions by Lye; the publication in 1750 of Eric Benzelius's edition and Latin translation of the Gothic Gospels (Sacrorum evangeliorum versio Gothica), together with Lye's own contribution of corrections and notes, preface, and a Gothic grammar; the Dictionarium Saxonico- et Gothico-Latinum, completed posthumously by Owen Manning and published in 1772; and an unfinished translation into Latin of the Old English poems of the Caedmon manuscript (Oxford, Bodl. MS. 11). Supporting materials, including biographical records and documents relevant to the edited letters and Lye's publications, are presented in several appendices; there are also biographical notes on Lye's correspondents and a bibliography of manuscripts and printed works. Like A Chorus of Grammars, edited by Richard L. In their earliest form they played a central role at the seventh-century school of Canterbury; they contributed material to the fundamental texts, dated to the 600s, known as the Leiden Glossary and the Epinal-Erfurt glossary. A varied collection with five distinguishable parts, the glossaries have at their heart a late Latin encyclopedia, the Etymologies of Isidore of Seville. The longest glossary lists thousands of Isidorian headwords and gives definitions in Old English. A second long glossary with two alphabetical components has some material that is even older. In addition, two small lists share some material with these longer texts. The glossaries are an important witness to the composing of the first encyclopedic work in our language. In shaping basic school texts, this encyclopedia became a crucial medium for translating Classical learning to an Insular environment. It put its stamp as well on the production of original works by the first generation of English writers, including Aldhelm, a Canterbury alumnus. The Antwerp-London Glossaries are perhaps the last long Old English text never to have been properly edited. This edition is accompanied by textual apparatuses and complete English and Latin indexes. Walter of Chatillon's 'Alexandreis'. Epic and the Problem of Historical Understanding

This study presents Walter of Chatillon?s Alexandreis and his exploration of the problems of interpretating not only languages, but also the texts, philosophies, religions and literatures of the past. Walter of Chatillon, the twelfth-century Latin poet now famed for his satirical lyrics, acquired international renown in the Middle Ages for his epic on Alexander the Great, the Alexandreis. This work did for the Middle Ages what Vergil had done for the Romans, proving the ability of the moderni to rival the ancients in learning and the arts. The Alexandreis immediately joined the Aeneid in the medieval paideia and was read in schoolrooms throughout Europe in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The Alexandreis enters into the twelfth-century debate about education. The intellectual world was rapidly changing, as the schools became specialized and professionalized, threatening the hitherto secure position of the liberal arts and Latin literature in the educational curriculum. At the same time, translations from Arabic and Greek, not only of the works of Aristotle, but also of Arabic philosophers, had begun to alter the concerns and methodologies of Western scholars. Theologians increasingly used Hebrew commentaries in their studies of the Hebrew Scriptures. The awareness of the intellectual achievements both of the ancients and of highly-civilized non-Christian contemporary cultures had reached a new peak. Twelfth-century intellectuals were presented with the challenge of assimilating the flow of new works and ideas into western historiography and the Latin world-view. Walter's exploration of the problems of interpretating not only languages, but also the texts, philosophies, religions and literatures of the past, is the subject of this study. Maura K. Lafferty studied Classics at Wellesley College, The University of North Carolina and has received her PhD in Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto.
