8vo (140 x 70 mm). Halftone print. Portrait postcard, signed in ink "Chung Ling Soo", with Chinese characters adjacent, depicting the magician head and shoulders, his head shaved and wearing a queue, in an embroidered jacket. This image was also used as the frontispiece for the programme for the Alhambra Theatre, Paris, in September 1912. - W. E. Robinson was an American illusionist famous for creating the persona of a Chinese magician, Chung Ling Soo, an act he performed both on and off the stage. Dressed in traditional Chinese attire, he shaved his head, wore his hair in a queue and created an elaborate "back story" for himself. He never spoke onstage unless in broken English and communicated to journalists via an interpreter. He became highly popular and one of the highest-paid vaudeville performers, helped no doubt by the publicity resulting from his feud with a real Chinese magician, Ching Ling Foo, who claimed he had stolen his act. Soo was most famous for his "Condemned to Death by the Boxers" trick and was fatally injured by a bullet during a performance of the act at Wood Green Empire in 1918. After his death, the public was shocked to learn that he was not Chinese.

8vo and 12mo. Together 7½ pp. Three shorter letters in the collection are of a practical nature, asking for or granting theatre tickets. In a letter from 4 May 1858 to the "Association des artistes dramatiques", Cisserant announces his resignation from the committee of the association because of an accident and lack of time. - On 14 July 1862, Cisserant informed a friend that the Odéon cannot hire a Mademoiselle Blainville even though he was impressed by her: "J'ai vue et entendue Mlle Blainville. Je lui trouve des qualités ; elle a du naturel, elle est jolie femme, enfin, j'ai d'elle une bonne opinion!... mais... il n'y a pas de place!". - Finally, Cisserant wrote a charming letter to the famous comic actor and close friend Jean-Marie Joseph Geoffroy, known as Geoffroy. The letter is remarkable, as Geoffroy famously avoided socializing with his colleagues and was decried a misanthrope. However, Cisserant addressed Geoffroy as "Mon Bon Jojo" and writes with great humour about his leg injury that prevented him from meeting Geoffroy. The letter can be dated with respect to the death of Geoffroy's wife Louisa Kersent in 1864, as Cisserant sends greetings her. - Hippolyte Cisserant was a comic actor at the Théâtre du Gymnase and at the Odéon. - The letter from 14 July 1862 on stationery with lithographed letterhead of the Odéon theatre. A letter from 14 September 1854 with embossed monogram. The letter to the "Association des artistes dramatiques" with recipient's note and traces of a collection label. Well preserved.

2 SS. 8vo. An einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten: "Wir haben das Residenztheater dem Herrn Keppler übergeben, der es für unsere Rechnung führen soll. Ich bleibe hübsch bei meinem Manne und nähre mich redlich! Wenn Sie also die Güte haben wollen, Ihre Vorschläge dem Herrn Keppler zu machen!" - Ausgebildet von Josef Lewinsky, trat die Schauspielerin in Hamburg, Berlin, Pest, Schwerin, Wien und in Leipzig auf, dessen Stadttheater sie bis 1871 als herausragende Tragödin angehörte. Mit der Rolle der Theodora wurde sie an den bayerischen Königshof zu einer Separatvorstellung berufen. 1872 folgte sie ihrem Mann Emil Claar nach Prag, 1876 ans Residenztheater Berlin und 1879 nach Frankfurt am Main. Gastspiele führten sie anschließend an verschiedene deutsche Theater, durch Rußland und Amerika. Seit 1891 spielte sie nur noch vereinzelt in Wohltätigkeitsvorstellungen.
