4to. 21 ff. on Arches paper, inscribed on rectos only. Manuscript of a lecture on the powerful influence music wields over people, recounting a conversation with the chansonnier Félix Mayol (1872-1941), whom he describes as wearing a blond toupee, having a charming face, being a little chubby, and talking with a Toulouse accent, as well as a concert of the violinist Nathan Milstein (1904-92), whose youth, sportsmanship, and short hair surprised him: "Je me promenais un jour sur le Boulevard de Strasbourg avec le chanteur de café Concert le plus populaire de l'époque et qui s'appelait Mayol [...] Il parlait un peu drôlement parce qu'il avait été Toulonnais [...] Il avait un volumineux toupet très blond et frisé, un charmant et fin visage a cette époque. Il était un peu dodu de sa personne et chantant la glorification des femmes [...] Et il y a quelques mois, justement, il y avait un grand violoniste qui arrivait d'Amérique pour donner un récital au Théatre des Champs Elysées. Il s'appelait Milstein [...] Un garçon tout à fait moderne. Pas du tout le type du musicien avec les longs cheveux [...] Non, au contraire, jeune, sportif [...]". - Further about a thrilling experience at the legendary Cotton Club in Harlem, where he heard Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, concluding with a reference to the stage routine with his pianist Fred Freed (1903-83): "Tenez en 1928 quand nous sommes partis pour faire des films à Hollywood et que nous nous sommes arrêtés quelques jours à New York où des amis nous ont fait visiter la ville et un soir nous ont emmenés à Harlem le quartier des noirs. Oui, il nous ont aussi fait visiter le Cotton Club. C'est un endroit où tous les jeunes de couleur dansent entre eux. Ah, il y avait un orchestre. Duke Ellington qui a çe moment là n'avait encore jamais joué pour les blancs a Broadway. Non, il n'avait joué jusque là que pour ses frères de couleur à Harlem. Il y avait aussi la Trompete, Armstrong. Ah, cet orchestre, non j'avais déjà entendu des orchestres Américains à Paris, mais jamais des dynamites de çe genre [...] Fred! 4to. 174 pp., 173 pp., 43 pp. Two typed manuscripts bound in original wrappers, with parts loosely inserted. Autograph manuscript loose. Manuscripts for the second volume of his memoirs "Ma route et mes chansons", which is subtitled "Londres, Hollywood, Paris" and was published in 1947 by Éditions Julliard. - The ensemble consists of 18 chapters, of which 17 are typed and one is handwritten. Compared to the published work, three chapters are missing: the introduction "Je vais sur mon chemin", chapter XV "La Petite Marcelle", and XVIII "My American Best Pote". - The first typed manuscript comprises 13 chapters bound in wrappers and 4 loosely inserted chapters. The end of the chapter entitled "It Was So Beautiful" is lacking (the last three pages have been removed with scissors). There are numerous small autograph corrections in blue ink, and an autograph page in pencil inserted. - The second typed manuscript is identical to the first, but was corrected by another hand in red pen. The end of chapter "It Was So Beautiful" is also cut out from this volume, but inserted loosely. - The autograph manuscript is entitled "Des souvenirs et des roses" (chapter XIX of the published work) and bears corrections in red pen from the same hand as the corrections in the second typed manuscript. Chevalier remembers his time in America: "Allongé sur une chaise longue - au milieu des autres voyageurs, l'horizon me semble un écran de dimensions gigantesques, où défilent des foules de visages et où des scènes, des sketches s'interposent comme si, au moment de remettre pour de bon les pieds dans mon pays, la mer américaine avant de les engloutir, tenait à me les faire bouillonner, sautiller dans mon cœur, devant les yeux. Comme un immense lot de souvenirs à triller, à choisir. Comme des artistes qui viennent saluer à la fin d'une représentation pour se rappeler à la mémoire du spectateur et pour venir quêter leur petite part d'applaudissements. Tous ces visages, Maurice, ont été des visages estimables, et il est juste qu'ils laissent en ton "toi-même" des traces de ce qu'ils ont ajouté à ton jugement des hommes et des femmes [...]".

Cartonnage d'éditeur en pleine percaline marron. Dos lisse orné d'un poisson en queue, titre argent et noir, et doré. Plats illustrés d'une scène d'intérieur d'un gentleman pratiquant l'équitation, la chasse. Le premier volume sur les saumons comporte des petites rousseurs éparses. Bel exemplaire, le dos du volume consacré aux saumon légèrement éclairci, les coiffes portant des traces de frottements. The Badminton Library est un projet d'encyclopédie des sports et divertissements, conçu et réalisé par henry Somerset, 8e duc de Beaufort ; il développa ainsi une collection spécifique dédiée aux sports (pêche, équitation, chasse, patinage, football) en faisant appel aux spécialistes du genre à l'époque, constatant qu'il n'existait pas de livre pour celui qui voulait s'adonner à telle pratique. Les deux livres qui furent publiés à quelques mois d'intervalle détaillent absolument tout ce qui concerne la pêche au saumon et à la truite, et la pêche au brochet et autres poissons. L'Angleterre distinguait Game fish (saumon, truite) pratiqué par la noblesse et Coarse fish, pêche dont le poisson était considéré comme moins bon. [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND]
