Garebian, Keith
George Bernard Shaw and Christopher Newton : Explorations of Shavian Theatre
Oakville New York London: Mosaic Press 1993. Paperback. Like New/No d/j as Published. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Type: Book Christopher Newton has placed the Shaw Festival firmly on the map world-class theatre. His best Shavian productions are revolutionary re-interpretations of plays that are normally treated as Edwardian period pieces or didactic entertainments. In this first full-length study of Newton critic Keith Garebian shows how the pairing of Shaw and Newton that once seemed 'not bloody likely' has become one of the most exciting enterprises in Canadian theatre with startling results. The book begins with a biographical section that sketches some of the most pervasive influences on Newton's artistic sensibility and suggests what has particularly inspired his ever-growing fascination with Shaw. Successive chapters document Newton's concept of Shaw as a surrealist and contain detailed descriptions of productions at Niagara-on-the-Lake from 1980-1990. Among other things readers are shown a Caesar and Cleopatra set in a Shadow Box; Heartbreak House as a dream-play of the night and anarchy; Major Barbara as a double quest; You Never Can Tell as part comic romance part farcical metaphor; the metatheatrical suggestions of Man and Super-man; and a Misalliance as metaphor of a convulsive new age. As Garebian shows Newton's approach for all its paradoxes succeeds in making George Bernard Shaw our dynamic contemporary. 164pp. N.B. Slight mark to bottom edge of front cover. Vol. 1: Half-title in red, main title in red and black, 1 f. index of plates, engr. portrait, 35 plates (numbered 1-40; 5 counted twice). Vol. 2: Half-title in red, main title in red and black, 1 f. index of plates, 40 plates (numbered 1-60; 20 chromolithographs counted twice). Includes: Half title of the text volume. Stored loosely in contemporary red half cloth portfolio with giltstamped cover title "Le Nouvel Opera de Paris | Bronzes" and four ties. First edition. - Plate volumes of the rare luxury work on the "Opéra Garnier", the neo-Baroque Parisian opera house completed in 1875, one of the most admired buildings of its time. The plates depict plans, cross-sections and elevations of the building, engraved in great detail after drawings by Duchamp, Jasson, Riquois and others. The beautiful chromolithographs (including the famous staircase) convey a vivid impression of the luxury and splendor of the interior decoration. Garnier's name became instantly famous when in 1861 he was unanimously awarded the first prize for his competition design for the new opera. His opera house, which cost the then unheard-of sum of 50 million francs, still constitutes the unsurpassed centerpiece of modern Parisian architecture (cf. Thieme/B.). To the plates were added four volumes of photographs by Durandelle and Garnier's monographic text volume (not present here). - Occasionally slightly rubbed; some 10 plates with insignificant defects to edges. Old library stamp ("Malmö Stadts Yrkesskolas Bibliotek") on front pastedown. Thieme/Becker 13, 205. Not in Ornamentstichslg. Berlin.

GARO KÜRKMAN.
Magic of clay and fire. A history of Kütahya pottery and potters.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (33 x 25 cm). In English. 405 p. Color ills. Some areas of art history have been overlooked in comparison to others, attracted less attention, and for this reason been the subject of less research and evaluation. Such situations are observed in particular where one branch or period of art in a country is so prominent as to overshadow its neighbours and counterparts. These neglected areas often deserve far more interest than circumstances grant them. Moreover, the bright light cast by their more famous cousins makes it harder, or even sometimes impossible, to do them justice and gain a true understanding of their qualities. A striking example of this phenomenon in Ottoman art is Kutahya ceramics, which have remained relatively unnoticed with the spotlight of attention focused on Iznik. When speaking of Ottoman ceramics it is first of all those of Iznik that spring to mind today, and this was no less true in the past. Kutahya pottery, like that of Canakkale, has been left to straggle far behind. Yet even a little examination reveals that although in comparison with these splendid 'court art' of Iznik, the pottery of Kutahya is regarded as provincial in character, and that of Canakkale as 'folk art', both these traditions are marked by lively originality and creativity. This book has been designed to throw new light on one of these overshadowed areas, the richly endowed world of Kutahya ceramics. In a region where pottery has been produced without interruption through the Phrygian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and modern periods, Kutahya's long history of pottery production - its development, materials, workshops and craftsmen - has now been re-examined in new depth. Garo Kurkman has combed museums and archives all over the world, bringing to light a myriad documents and photographs that have never been published before, and his fascinating study based on all this new information takes us on a thrilling journey through the magical world of clay, fire and glaze. Some aspects of art history are inevitably overshadowed, and attracting less attention are inadequately researched and evaluated. This happens particularly when one branch or period of a country's art rises to the fore and casts a dazzling light in which other close and similar forms pale into indignificance. arts which are so outshone do not receive the appreciation they really deserve, the brigjht of their illustrious fellow over shadwowed arts possess unexpected riches, uniqe flavours and unforeseen depths thath await discovery by the alert arthistorian, the sharp eyed collector, and the art lover who enjoys following rarely trodden paths.
