Eleanor Hull was a devout laywoman lady-in-waiting to the second wife of Henry IV who spent some of her life in Sopwell Priory a house of Benedictine nuns attached to St. Albans Abbey. She is the first woman to have made translations into English whose name is known and about whom there is any information. In addition to the commentary on the penitential psalms she translated a collection of prayers and meditations. To the musician Frederick Allan Wilshire (1868-1944) in Bristol with a quotation: "'Would I were young forever' / 'Claudian' [...]". - In 1881, Wilson Barrett took over the recently refurbished Princess's Theatre, where his melodramatic productions enjoyed great success. He stayed there until 1886, when he made a visit to America. The quoted stage play "Claudian", written by Henry Herman and W. G. Wills, was Barret Wilsons first Roman costume play. - On stationery with embossed letterhead of the "Royal Princess's Theatre". Signature slightly waterstained.

Red cloth over boards title and decorations stamped in black onto upper board and spine decorative endpapers 12mo 6-7/8 inches tall pp. i-ii iv 244. No date stated. Photo illustrated DJ with Katharine Hepburn's name misspelled as "Katherine" - susposedly one of her pet peeves. Volume with a few faint spots to top board softened spine ends and slight toning to text block edges. DJ with heavily sunned spine chipped spine ends light soil stains and edge wear with small chips at flap corners and a light crease to front flap. With the RKO film starring Hepburn being released in 1934 one can only assume that the publication date of this volume - with the front panel movie still of Hepburn as Babbie the gypsy - would probably have been in the same year as the film. This was the general convention for most photoplay editions. Not listed in Davis or Petaja no jacketed copies found in the trade WorldCat or in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science collections. Front hinge and first 2 endpapers have some minor tearing to lower edges webbing is slightly showing. Inner text block is fairly tight with no breaks. Front pastedown is beginning to pull away from cover. Covers have moderate rubbing to edges causing some fraying to head/heel of spine and corners. Lower right corner of front ocver is slightly creased. Slight musty smell to book. This is not a remainder or ex-library. Hübsches Portrait en face; die Widmung an Ludwig Herold. - Schon von Kindesbeinen an auf der Bühne stehend, begann ihre "erwachsene" Karriere 1931 in Paul Abrahams Operette "Viktoria und ihr Husar". Beim Film debütierte sie in ihrem Heimatland in "A ven gazember" (32) und wirkte anschließend höchst erfolgreich in deutschen wie auch ungarischen Produktionen mit. Nach dem Krieg mit Ausnahme von Ernst Marischkas Komödie "Scherben bringen Glück" (1957) ausschließlich auf der Bühne zu sehen, wirkte sie in Komödien und Operetten mit, war 1959 am Stadttheater Klagenfurt tätig und zuletzt fürs französische Fernsehen. - Ludwig Herold (geb. 1885), Operettensänger und Direktor der gleichnamigen Theater- und Filmschule, studierte Gesang, debütierte im Stadttheater von Hermannsstadt, wurde von Wilhelm Karczag und Karl Wallner ans Theater an der Wien verpflichtet und "gewann [...] bald durch sein elegantes, lebenswahres Spiel und seine einschmeichelnde Stimme die Gunst des Wiener Publikums" (Planers Jahrbuch der Wr. Gesellschaft, 1929). In rund 145 Gastspielreisen durch alle großen Städte Deutschlands, Rußlands, Rumäniens sowie durch Paris und London kreierte er zahlreiche erste Rollen.

Together 6½ pp. The longest letter in the collection is to refuse an invitation to the countryside due to professional obligations in Paris: "Mon regret est vif de ne pouvoir répondre selon votre désir à la demande que vous m'avez fait transmettre par mon amie Mme Rodocanachi, me voici prise par un très long travail et de tout l'hiver je ne devrai pas m'absenter de Paris. [...]". - The lettercard is an invitation to her friend Marguerite Amillet: "Si vous pouvez ma chère migonne venez demain Jeudi à 5½". As Bertet uses the same nickname "Mignonne" on the visiting card to thank her for flowers, it is likely that Marguerite Amillet was the recipient. - In a short letter dated "Lundi 19", Bertet asks a Mr Picard, possibly the dramatist André Picard, for a box seat in the theatre for that night: "Je voudrais bien avoir pour ce soir une loge n'importe laquelle mais comme je ne puis aller au théâtre, voulez vous avoir l'obligéance de la demander pour moi, de la glisser dans l'enveloppe ci jointe et de la faire porter immédiatement". - Minimal browning and stains. A Domestic Scene Young Man Sitting At Right Reading With Two Women Working On Clothes A Small Child And A Dog. Original Hand Coloring. "Painted By Morland" At Lower Left "Bartoloxxi St" At Lower Right With Large Text "Domestic Happinesf" In Large Script At Bottom. Plate Mark Approximately 15 7/16" X 11 1/2" Rectangular; Image Is Also Rectangular; Large Margins. Francesco Bartolozzi Ra 1727 - 1815 Was An Italian Engraver Whose Most Productive Period Was Spent In London. Bartolozzi Was Born In Florence. He Was Originally Destined To Follow The Profession Of His Father A Gold- And Silver-Smith But He Manifested So Much Skill And Taste In Designing That He Was Placed Under The Supervision Of Two Florentine Artists Including Ignazio Hugford And Giovanni Domenico Ferretti Who Instructed Him In Painting. After Devoting Three Years To That Art He Went To Venice And Studied Engraving. He Particularly Admired The Work Of Joseph Wagner. His First Productions In Venice Were Plates In The Style Of Marco Ricci Zuccarelli And Others While Working For Wagner Which Began To Draw Attention. He Then Moved For A Short Time To Rome Where He Completed A Set Of Engravings Representing Frescoes At Grottaferrata By Domenichino Depicting The Life Of St Nilus. He Soon Returned To Venice And Left For London In 1764. He Lived In London For Nearly Forty Years. He Produced An Enormous Number Of Engravings Including Clytie After Annibale Carracci And Of The Virgin And Child After Carlo Dolci. A Large Proportion Of Them Are From The Works Of Cipriani And Angelica Kauffman. Bartolozzi Also Contributed A Number Of Plates To Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery. He Also Drew Sketches Of His Own In Red Chalk. Soon After Arriving In London He Was Appointed 'Engraver To The King' With An Annual Salary Of £300. He Was Elected A Founding Member Of The Royal Academy In 1768 And In 1802 Became The Founding President Of The Short-Lived Society Of Engravers. His Pupils Were Michele Benedetti Ignatius Joseph Van Den Berghe Thomas Cheesman Lambertus Antonius Claessens Daniel Gardner Christiaan Josi Johan Fredrik Martin Conrad Martin Metz Luigi Schiavonetti John Keyse Sherwin Heinrich Sintzenich Peltro William Tomkins Don Bernardo Zilotti2 And Gabriel Scorodomoff. Bartolozzi Was Not The Inventor Of The So-Called Crayon Manner Of Engraving Which Imitated The Subtleties Of Chalk Drawings But He Made It The Fashion. In 1802 Bartolozzi Accepted The Post Of Director Of The National Academy Of Lisbon The City Where He Died. An einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten: "während ich meinen Osterurlaub in Bayreuth zubrachte und eifrig im Tristan schwelgte, gelangte an meine Dresdner Adresse ein Brief, veranlasst von der Sekretärin des deutschen Schulvereins in Graz. Ich wurde um die Mitwirkung in einem Konzert im November gebeten; vorausgesetzt daß mich meine Generaldirektion freilässt bin ich sehr gerne bereit dem deutschen Schulverein, soweit ich es kann, zu nützen! Bei dieser Gelegenheit möchte ich Sie auf eine Dresdner Pianistin aufmerksam machen […]. Die Dame, Frau Gipser, ist bereits wiederholt erfolgreich in Berlin aufgetreten! Da ich die Dame wegen ihrer künstlerischen und intellectuellen Eigenschaften sehr hochschätze, wäre es mir persönlich ein großes Vergnügen gemeinsam mit Frau Gipser an dem geplanten Conzert teilzunehmen. Ich hoffe, sehr verehrter Herr Doctor, gelegentlich meines Gastspieles in Prag, das Weitere mit Ihnen mündlich besprechen zu können […]". - Auf Briefpapier mit gedr. Briefkopf. - Nach dem Studium der Medizin und der Naturwissenschaften in Leipzig und München war Bary bis 1901 als Assistenzarzt an der Leipziger Universitätsklinik beschäftigt. Nebenbei bildete er seine baritonale Tenorstimme aus und gehörte 1902-12 als Heldentenor dem Ensemble der Dresdner Hofoper an. 1912 wurde er an der Münchner Hofoper engagiert; 1918 kehrte er zu seinem Arztberuf zurück. Seit 1904 trat Bary bei den Bayreuther Festspielen in den großen Heldenrollen auf. - Bei der genannten Pianistin handelt es sich um Else Gipser (1875-1925), eine Schülerin Theodor Leschetizkys in Wien und Rudolf Breithaupts in Berlin.
