Made floor sculptures out of standard industrial units such as bricks or metal plates in simple arithmetic combinations; also experimented with scattered blocks and pieces of bent pipe, etc. Lives in New York.

His work is linked to the Nouvelle Céramique international movement which emerged in the 1970s, characterised in particular by a realistic sculptural approach. A multidisciplinary artist with a vast technical background, he is a ceramicist and a creator of jewels, prints, furniture, and monumental terracotta pieces integrated in architectural projects. These less known aspects came under the spotlight for the first time with the various versions of the ceramic shipwrecks for which he has become famous. Ludovic Recchia, the Artistic Director of the Keramis Centre, has brought together several authors, in particular Frédéric Bodet, Stéphanie Le Follic-Hadida, Marc Dubois, and Carine Verleye, who throw light on the eclectic works of this astonishing artist. This monograph is published in collaboration with Keramis, which is holding a major retrospective dedicated to the artist. Keramis, established on the site of the old Boch pottery at La Louvière, is a space for creation and the arts, specifically dedicated to the ceramic medium.

Hans Memling's altarpiece for the high altar of Santa María la Real in Nájera (1483-1494) must have been one of the most spectacular Flemish art works in the Iberian Peninsula. Only three panels survive in the Antwerp Royal Museum of Fine Arts : God surrounded by singing and music-making angels. The retable?s central theme was the mystery of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. The iconography of the whole has been described by Jovellanos at the end of the 18th century. From c. 1482 on, dozens of monumental altarpieces dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin in conjunction with Christological themes have been created throughout Spain. They focus on the complex role of the Holy Virgin, her triumph and glorification. It was a common belief that she was the only human to have borne up bodily into heaven. Although ?Maryam? was held in very high esteem by Muslims too ?and as such, she was a interreligious ?bridge?--, her role as Theotokos or Mother of God was a point of conflict. During the last phase of the Reconquista, to Iberian Christians, the Assumption served as an image of the Church/Faith Triumphant, not as a conciliatory belief.

April 1664 in Venedig als Sohn eines Bäckers geboren. Er lernte sein Handwerk bei verschiedensten Meistern in Bologna, Venedig, Tirol und München, wobei der bekannteste Lehrer sicherlich Giuseppe Mazza war. Ab 1690 lebte und wirkte er primär in Österreich und brachte damit die italienische, barocke Plastik in das durch die Zweite Wiener Türkenbelagerung künstlerisch ausgehungerte Wien. Erste Aufmerksamkeit erregte er durch die Ausstattung des von Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach errichteten Stadtpalais? für den Prinz Eugen von Savoyen sowie durch seine Arbeiten am Gartenpalais in der Roßau des Fürsten Johann Adam Andreas (heute Liechtenstein-Museum). Finanzielle Probleme bewogen ihn, am 25. Februar 1711 eine lebenslange Bindung als Familiare mit dem Stift Heiligenkreuz einzugehen, im Gegenzug für die Abtretung seiner verbliebenen Geldmittel, Werke und des Verzichtes auf künftige Geldforderungen für die zu schaffenden Werke für das Kloster, stellte der Orden einen kostenlosen Betrieb der Bildhauer-Werkstatt sicher. Der bedeutendste Mitarbeiter und Schüler dieser Werkstatt war Georg Raphael Donner. Bis zu seinem Tod, am 5. September 1744 gestaltete er wesentlich den Umbau des Stiftes Heiligenkreuz sowie des Heiligenkreuzerhofs in Wien. Zu seinen bemerkenswertesten Arbeiten zählt das Chorgestühl in Heiligenkreuz und die Bernhardskapelle im Heiligenkreuzerhof. Aber auch in anderen Kirchen in der Umgebung von Heiligenkreuz, wie in Gaaden findet man seine Spuren,[1] die durch Verkäufe bis in das Stift Admont reichen.[2] Gestorben ist Giuliani in Heiligenkreuz, wo er auch in der Stiftskirche wie Martino Altomonte seine letzte Ruhestätte fand.
