First edition of this scarce and nicely illustrated catalogue for Hart Schaffner & Marx clothing before World War I. The company was well known for their lavish use of colour lithography in advertising and especially their catalogues. This includes a series of exceptional artwork displaying overcoats formal dress sportswear automobile travel clothes for men and more. These motoring coats were clearly being marketed to young men and college students increasingly taking to the roads during the Brass Era. This copy was printed for the Dege & Milner department store in downtown Tacoma which was operated from 1901-1915 by James H. Dege and his partner William Milner before Dege opened the James H. First edition of this nicely printed Victorian catalogue for rubber boots and shoes. The nicely executed lithographs promote the Hip Boots hip waders thigh high sporting boots double thick Pebble Leg Boots and Fairy Boots reminiscent of cowboy boots as well as the rubber Duck or Canvas Boot for hunting. Also included are many different styles and varieties of rubber shoes for women and children including No Heel Imitation Sandals Gossamer Imitation Sandals Buskins with cotton flanel lining Opera Dew Drop Feather Weight and many others. The company also produced tennis rubber soled shoes croquet shoes as well as heavy duty Stalwart Lumbermen’s Shoe intended to fit over logger’s Wool Boots or German Socks. Leverett Candee 1795-1863 obtained early patent rights from Goodyear for manufacturing rubber shoes as early as 1844 and by 1852 had organized the large Candee Rubber Co. factory with the Hotchkiss Brothers in New Haven and Timothy Lester. First edition of this very scarce and spectacular fashion design magazine supplement for women’s lingerie from the early 1930s produced by the famed Chic Parisien publishing house owned by Atelier Bachwitz and printed by Leon Claude who also issued the Le Gout Parisien fashion magazine. These designs show the growing movement away from the straight narrow gamin look for women in the 1920s with two-piece undergarments becoming the norm trimmed with lace and feminine details as well as employing the new Rayon and rubber elastic textiles. Pre-code Hollywood glamor popularized by Carole Lombard Kathryn Crawford Josephine Dunn and others influenced lingerie fashions heavily. Arnold Bachwitz 1854-1930 built one of the most successful and influential fashion journals with Chic Parisien reaching countries around the world and influencing trends in Paris Vienna London and New York. In addition Atelier Bachwitz published over 50 other fashion-related magazines and his widow Rosine 1853-1942 continued the tradition through the 1930s until the business was seized by the Nazis and she was put to death during the Holocaust. First edition of this scarce and beautifully printed fashion magazine which was published under this title only from 1894 through 1896 when it was forced to change the name to The Standard Designer after losing a lawsuit brought by the Butterick Publishing Co. against Frank Koewing d. 1933 their former western sales manager for Butterick. Founded in 1887 the Standard Fashion Co. would eventually become a serious rival to the Butterick Pattern Co. appropriating the “Delineator†for his magazine poaching employees and eventually building the company to issuing over 100000 cut patterns a week. While often facing bankruptcy and litigious to a fault the company was acquired as a subsidiary in 1900 by Butterick and the combined companies would thrive through the ensuing decades. Each of the Standard Delineator magazine issues featured a large chromolithograph frontispiece of the latest fashions as well as a smaller one of millinery designs. The Singer Sewing Machine company developed special Singer Sewing Academia in Argentina Mexico and many other South American countries as well as Spain between the World Wars. These special private schools for professional dressmakers using the Singer manuals allowed female-owned dressmaking businesses to grow and create professional spaces separte from men. In addition these academias allowed women to pay by the class and embroidery was one of the advanced skills which commanded higher wages for women at the time. Singer actively encouraged this movement in order to develop home-based businesses and academias which in turn increased their sales of sewing machines. The sample book begins with a number of decorative types of embroidery stitches monograms and then displays floral patterns spider-web patterns laces a beautifully embroidered red roses and carnations on purple silks and satins. ‎New Jersey & New York: n.p. ca. 1895. Elephant folio. 15 x 19.5 by 2.5 in. 84 pp unpaginated. on think clay-sized paper stock. With 732 textile lace and embroidery samples tipped-in ranging in size from 1 x 1 in. up to 9 x 12 in. with most of the samples identified by stock numbers and occasional pricing in ink manuscript either below or to the side. Contemporary purple linen sample book raised bands marbled endpapers minor edgewear some wear & minor splitting to the outer cloth at head & foot of spine outer hinge starting occasional dustsoiling & edgewear to some of the leaves offsetting from samples a few samples removed several laid-in loose still a VG- exemplar w/ label for J.M. Bleyer Stationer Printer Paper 20-22 E. 21st St. NY on front pastedown. Joseph Bleyer 1862-1916 was an Austrian-born stationer and paper dealer who according to city directories opened his shop around 1889 was located at this address in 1895-96 and the firm would declare bankruptcy after his death in 1917. This astonishing sample catalogue for Gilded Age fancy laces embroideries trims and fabrics worn by stylish women at the end of the 19th century is one of the most lavish such productions by an American firm we have ever catalogued. The family from whom this sample catalogue originated maintained that it was prepared by an ancestor’s trim and lace factory in New Jersey which also operated a wholesale operation in New York. Haute couture fashions in the 1890s reflected a rich and decorative aesthetic incorporating silk threads gold and silver thread embroideries elaborate lace trims bodices beautifully decorated and richly ornamented sleeves collars capes and more. Many similar fancy trims and embroideries can be seen in Victorian dresses designed by James McCreary Paul Doucet colourful designs depicted in such contemporary magazines as the Delineator. These incorporate Arts & Crafts patterns clearly influenced by William Morris with special emphasis on organic shapes as well rich colours striking geometric shapes epaulets and more. These samples encompass embroidered cotton silk & linen laces silk blends many are rich brocades and embroidered cuffs with rich bright jewel colours including reds deep greens purples golds gold thread pieces as well as beautifully embroidered blacks & navy blues brown velvets and more. The most desirable dolls in the 19th-century were the French bisque dolls distributed all over Europe and were originally modeled on teen girls or adult women although these eventually changed over into child like bisque doll babies which would dominate the market from the 1860s onward. Bannon 1895-1963 was inspired to write this work while staying at the famed MacDowell Art Colony in Peterborough NH which carried a legend of a secret room in the MacDowell farmhouse.
