br. "Che idea avevano della forma della Terra gli antichi, gli uomini del Medioevo e poi i moderni? Come se la immaginavano? E perché se la immaginavano proprio in quella maniera? La questione non è affatto semplice, appunto perché decidere tra le due forme, la piatta e la sferica, è l'atto originario dell'intera riflessione occidentale, nel senso che è proprio intorno a questo problema che la riflessione dell'Occidente sul mondo si struttura, si organizza". La Terra è spazio, immensa estensione, un quadro generale. E la carta geografica che fornisce l'orientamento per muoversi nelle località più concrete della vita vissuta. Non è stato sempre così. Quando il mondo era molto più piccolo, quando era in gran parte sconosciuto e dunque i territori noti erano solo un parziale anticipo di un altrove terreno misterioso, le rappresentazioni della Terra svolgevano probabilmente un'altra funzione, o la stessa in modi diversi. Erano mappe, ma di cosa? Questo libro racconta l'evoluzione della geografia - dalla Genesi e l'Enuma Elis babilonese alla moderna cartografia - in quanto storia di un progressivo disincanto. Dal Mondo alla carta geografica. Come, attraverso cosmogonie, cosmologie, e cosmografie, il vago e mitico universo-tutto, lentamente e laboriosamente, ha partorito la Terra.

La prima parte del libro sulla terra nell'universo può considerarsi un'introduzione per non dimenticare qual è il nostro rapporto con il mondo celeste, mentre nel resto del libro sono presentati i fondamenti che ogni studioso deve possedere per poi potersi dedicare alla disciplina desiderata. La geografia fisica dunque come infrastruttura degli studi sulla natura e sulla distribuzione dei fenomeni naturali di tipo fisico, ben consapevoli che esiste anche un altro agente modellatore della superficie terrestre, l'Uomo che, con altre scienze, porta a scoprire e identificare la dimensione e la tipologia delle trasformazioni. L'uomo si pone così all'interno del ciclo di trasformazione delle quattro radici di tutto. La geografia fisica è quindi un campo indispensabile, consapevoli che essa è a un tempo un punto di arrivo ma anche di premessa allo studio sempre più approfondito della nostra terra.

Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's quarter yellow cloth and matching boards, upper cover illustrated, spine lettered, boards very slightly rubbed or finger marked, short tear to blank margin of one folding plan and to first free endpaper. In about fine condition. Minor blemishes noted, a surprisingly clean and well preserved copy with absolutely crisp maps. ~ Fully revised edition. First published in 1909. Emil Sigmund Fischer (1865-1945), banker and traveler, born in Vienna. He came to China in 1894 and was a banker in Shanghai, later in Tienstin. Beside "Guide to Peking" he wrote "Travels in China, 1894-1940" (Tienstin, 1941); "Through the Silk and Tea Districts of Kiang-nan and Chekiang"; "The Trans-Siberian Route" and others. He was held prisoner by the Japanese from 1941 until his death. With contemporary ticket to first paste-down, in English and Chinese, "French Bookstore, Peiping (China)".
