Sm. folio, First and Sole Edition, with copper-engraved illustrated title and 62 fine copper-engraved plates showing 372 coats of arms, some mild age-staining (mainly marginal) and a few leaves with inoffensive worming in lower blank margin; publisher's boards, cloth back, very neatly recased, new paper label, a very good, relatively clean copy. This copy is complete with all plates; it has been bound without the introduction and list of subscribers that are sometimes present.This very scarce work is generally attributed (including Halkett & Laing) to Sir George Nayler, Garter King-at-Arms, but DNB states 'it was in reality the work of one Ames, an engraver at Bristol', an opinion shared by Moule. Anderson adds that the arms are taken 'chiefly from Atkyns's and Rudder's histories'.The title-vignette shows Time as an angel supporting the ancient arms of the City of Gloucester with the cathedral in the distance.Anderson p.106; Austin 12084; Moule DCXCII (p.469); Upcott Gloucestershire VIII (p.264).

br. Le carte geografiche sono oggetti che suscitano ancora curiosità, ma il cui potere persuasivo è tutt'altro che riconosciuto. Nonostante siano impiegate più che mai quotidianamente, da quando la loro versione digitale sui dispositivi mobili come tablet e smartphone ne rende possibile gli usi più svariati, la loro vera natura resta ancora dominio degli specialisti, anche grazie all'analfabetismo geografico indotto dalle riforme dell'istruzione. In effetti, le mappe hanno sempre fatto circolare fiducia in una determinata visione del mondo, quindi in una specifica lettura politica della realtà e, a volte, ne hanno reso possibile la progettazione. Perché quindi "disegno dell'Europa"? Perché questo libro sceglie di seguire il filo conduttore delle rappresentazioni geografiche di ciò che oggi viene chiamata identità europea, cercando di mostrare il ruolo delle mappe sia come certificazione di un dominio territoriale in atto sia come prefigurazione di un territorio da realizzare. In questo libro ci si chiede: l'Europa che conosciamo sarebbe stata la stessa senza carte geografiche? Quanto delle odierne difficoltà nell'immaginare e realizzare una effettiva unità europea sono da attribuire a una sorta di 'sindrome cartografica'?
