‎"SIEDENTOPF, H. und R. (RICHARD) ZSIGMONDY. - THE INVENTION OF THE ULTRAMICROSCOPE.‎

‎Ueber Sichtbarmachung und Grössenbestimmung ultramikroskopischer Teilchen, mit besondrer Anwendung auf Goldrubingläser.‎

‎(Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1903). Without wrappers.. In ""Annalen der Physik. Vierte Folge. Bd. 10. No 1. (Entire issue offred). With halftitle to vol. 10. 224 pp. and 1 folded plate. Seidentopf & Zsigmondy's paper: pp. 1-39 a. textillustrations. The issue punched in inner margin after cords. 3 small stamps in the text.‎

‎First printing of the paper in which Zsigmondy describes his invention of the Ultramicroscope, by which is became possible to see the Brownian movements of molecules. His microscope is still of great importence in colloid studies, but in most fields where great magnification is required, it has been outdistanced by the electron microscope.""Zsigmondy was a figure of paramount importance on colloid chemistry during the first quarter of the twentieth century. His receipt of the Nobel Prize in 1925, for invention of the ultramicroscope and his work on colloids was the first time this fledgling science had been so honored. In 1926 work by J. B. Perrin and Theodor Svedberg that followed directly from Zsigmondy’s achievement was recognized by the Nobel Prizes in physics and in chemistry, respectively. No Nobel Prize since then has been awarded for work solely in colloid chemistry. (DSB).The offered issue contains another importent paper by MAX ABRAHAM ""Prinzipien der Dynamik des Elektrons. Pp. 105-179. In 1902 Abraham said ""It now becomes necessary to base the dynamics of the electrons from the outset on electromagnetic considerations"" In 1903 (the paper offered) he published his main detailed article on the rigid electron""(Pais in Subtle is the ord"" pp. 157 ff.""The ultramicroscope is form of microscope that reveals the presence of particles that cannot be seen with a normal optical microscope. Colloidal particles, smoke particles, etc., are suspended in a liquid or gas in a cell with a black background and illuminated by an intense cone of light that enters the cell from the side and has its apex in the field of view. The particles then produce diffraction-ring systems, appearing as bright specks on the dark background.‎

‎Extremely rare first printing of what is arguably the world's first facsimile, namely Mads Vingaard's 1576 reproduction of the first printing of the Law of Sealand, originally printed by Ghemen in 1505 and here re-issued in exact reproduction. This wonderful print is not merely a ""line to line, word to word""-reproduction, but a facsimile making use of the same types and exact reproductions of the woodcuts. It is generally believed that ""the first facsimile in the history of the book was a manuscript of Austrian provenance - the Goldene Bulle - reproduced in 1697 by the Frankfurt law historian Heinrich Günther Thülemeyer and Johann Friedrich Fleischer"" (from ""Imagination, Almanach"" 1986-1993, Sammelheft. 1993"" 2006). The present reproduction predates that work otherwise hailed as the first ""facsimile"" in the history of the book by more than a century! Some credit Plantin in the 17th century with being the first to produce a facsimile. This is also about a century after Mats Vingaard's facsimile of the Law of Sealand. Like the laws of Sealand and The Law of Scania, The Law of Jutland"" constitutes a law book (""Rechtsbuch"" in German) in the sense of a private collection of those common laws pertaining to inheritance, ownership, marriage, measurement of land, murder, theft, vandalism, etc. that were commonly applicable in the region. The medieval Danish regional laws possess an immense importance both linguistically and legally, and the influence is evident even today, both in the development of our legal system and of our written language. At the time of their foundation, the Danish kingdom was divided into jurisdictional areas, lands, that in turn were divided into townships. Each land had a county council, which also served as a judicial court. It quite quickly became standard for the township court to be able to refer verdicts and rulings to the county/land council. In the 13th century, there were three main lands, namely Jutland, Sealand and Skåne. With time, these three lands came to rule over all townships, and thus, we find three ruling legal books from the 13th century, namely the three earliest Danish law books - Jyske Lov, the Sealandic Laws, and Skånske Lov. They were all printed for the first time in 1505 and 1505 respectively. It is not until 1683 (with ""Danske Lov"") that Denmark gets a law that covers the entire kingdom. The 1576 facsimile is scarce and Thesaurus estimates that only ab. 10 copies still exist on private hands.‎

‎First German edition. ""His paper ""Teoria kinetyczna opalescencji gazów w stanie krytycznym"" (""kinetic Theory of Gas Opalescence at the Critical Stale"" 1907) - the paper offered in the German version - shows why the critical point plays such an important role and states that the opalescence of pure gas also should be observable under normal conditions: ""Each of us has observed it innumerable times when admiring the blue of the sky or the glow of the rising sun."" Smoluchowski combined the theory of fluctuations with the results of Lord Rayleigh’s researches on the blue of the sky" his finding (Einstein also took part in the discussion) was that the blueness of the sky was caused by fluctuations in the density of the air. Smoiuchowski’s laboratory production of sky blue closed the investigation to a certain extent.that pure air can opalesce in the laboratory under normal conditions.‎

‎Scarce first German edition of this hugely influential textbook in optics.""Smith wrote on optics and harmonics. In 1738 he published A Compleat System of Optics in Four Books, viz. A Popular, at Mathematical, a Mechanical, and a Philosophical Treatise. Both comprehensive and reliable, the work became probably the most influential optical textbook of the eighteenth century. It was also published in Dutch in 1753, in German in 1755, and in two different French translations in 1767, In 1778 an abridged version was published in English. In turn, its popularity helped to establish the eighteenth-century conviction that light is particulate."" (DSB).‎

‎First appearance of these 5 important papers in which Stark describes his researches on the effects of the electrical field on the spectral lines of hydrogen, thus discovering the splitting of the spectral lines, THE STARK-EFFECT. This effect was incorporated into quantum mexhanics by Paul Epstein in 1916, and it was shown to be consistent with wave mechanics by Schrödinger in 1926. In 1919 Stark was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics for his discovery of the Doppler effect in canal rays and of the splitting of spectral lines inan electric field (the papers offered). ""At the beginning of July 1913, several months before Stark’s discovery, Niels Bohr published his concept of a quantum-mechanical model of the atom. This provided, in principle, the possibility of understanding the reason for the Stark effect, which the classical theory was powerless to explain. Stark therefore had an opportunity to be doubly gratified, having also been one of the first, after Max Planck and Einstein, to stress the “fundamental significance” of Planck’s elementary law (since 1907). which he had championed in many polemical discussions. Yet, almost incomprehensibly, Stark denied himself the satisfaction of seeing his own experiments confirm a theory for which he had helped prepare the way conceptually, even if he had not directly participated in its creation. Apparently he always had to oppose the accepted point of view. Thus, as Bohr’s theory continued to gain adherents in 1914-1916."" (DSB)‎

This publication led Marignac to doubt the universality of the law of definite proportions. In three papers collectively entitled ""Nouvelles recherches sur les lois des proportions chimiques, sur les poids atomiques et leurs rapports mutuels"" (1865), Stas presented the results of an extensive series of experiments devoted to the new demonstration. By painstaking and accurate measurements he established that atomic weights were incommensurable, thereby disproving the facile conclusion that discrepancies with whole-number values were due merely to experimental errors. Prout’s hypothesis was thus discredited.""(DSB).‎

""In 1817, fulfilling the duties of his office, he came across an apothecary's shop in which a bottle labeled zinc oxide contained zinc carbonate. Following this up, Stromeyer found himself interested in zinc carbonate, which turned yellow on strong heating as though it contained iron as an impurity, yet it contained no iron. He traced the yellow to an oxide not of zinc but of a hitherto unknown metal rather like it chemically. ‎Scarce first edition of Swedenborg's main scientific work. The volume also form part one of his ""Opera Philosophica et Mineralia"".""In his Principia rerum naturalium (Leipzig, 1734), probably conceived as a counterpart to Newton’s Principia, he sought a comprehensive physical explanation of the world based on mathematical and mechanical principles. While remaining faithful to the general principles of Cartesian natural philosophy, which he had learned while studying at Uppsala, Swedenborg elaborated upon them. According to his cosmogony the physical reality has developed from the mathematical point, which was an entity between infinite and finite. Through a vortical movement implanted on the point, a series of material particles developed (the ""first finiata, ""the second finita"",and so on) that eventually led to the cosmos in its present state. In contrast to Descartes, Swedenborg believed that the planets had developed from the chaotic solar mass through expansion of its surrounding shell, which finally joined to form a belt along the equatorial plane of the sun. It then exploded, forming the planets and the satellites. Although the basic construction of Swedenborg’s thought heralded the later planetary theories of Buffon, Kant, and Laplace, there is nothing to indicate that it exerted any direct influence on posterity."" ‎Collection of 15 large lithographed maps relating to the battles during the Peninsula war. The maps are lithographed from the original Drawing(s) in the Qr Mr Genls Office, at the Top.l Dept of the War Office (by) H. James.‎

‎(London, War Office, 1860-70). All of the large maps are lithographed (one signed ""lith. James Ferguson"") with positions in colour. The measures given are paper sizes, comprising: 1. Movements of the two Armies after the Repulse of Marshal Massena's Attack upon the Position of Busaco. (68 x 82 cm.).- 2. Battle of Talevera de la Reyna fought on the 27th & 28th July 1809. (113 x 68 cm.). - 3. Battle of Busaco. General Position of the French and allied Armies on the 26th September 1810. (68 x 100 cm.). - 4-6. Battle of Fuentes D'Onoro, Fought on the 3rd and 5th May 1811. Map 1-3., each (68 x 100 cm.). - 7-15. all with the heading title Massena's Retreat No. 1-3 and 5-10 each around (51 x 67 cm.). At end one untitled map. Some foldings strenghtened with tape.‎

‎We have been unable to decide whether these maps are a part of a series or just published separately. The Peninsular War was a military conflict between Napoleon's empire and Bourbon Spain, for control of the Iberian Peninsula during the Napoleonic Wars. The war began when the French and Spanish armies invaded and occupied Portugal in 1807, and escalated in 1808 when France turned on Spain, previously its ally. The war on the peninsula lasted until the Sixth Coalition defeated Napoleon in 1814, and is regarded as one of the first wars of national liberation, significant for the emergence of large-scale guerrilla warfare.‎

‎First German translation of ""Danish Law"" which became a prototype and inspiration for other European codexes. The English envoy to Denmark at the time, Robert Molesworth, praises the Danish Code in his otherwise highly negative text: ""An account of Denmark as it was in the year 1692"". He states that in justice, brevity and clarity, the Code surpasses all other legal texts he knows of. It is so clear and simple to understand, that any literate person can understand his case and is able to represent himself in Court if he so wishes. Thesaurus II: 431.‎

This paper, ""On Oxalic Acid"" also established a usefull method of determining empirical formulas.""(DSB XIII, p. 373).""This paper is also importent as he here introduces quantified chemical symbolism for compounds, a compound with, for instance, two parts oxygen (w) and one part carbon (c) being denoted by 2w + c."" ‎"THOMSON, WILLIAM (LORD KELVIN) & JAMES PRESCOTT JOULE. - THE JOULE-THOMSON EFFECT DISCOVERED.‎

‎On the Thermal Effects of Fluids in Motion. Received June 15, - Read June 16, 1853.‎

‎(London, Richard Taylor and William Francis, 1853) 4to. No wrappers as extracted from ""Philosophical Transactions"" 1853, Vol. 143 - Part III. Pp. 357-365. Textillustrations. Clean and fine.‎

‎First appearance of this highly importent paper in the development of thermodynamics, describing the experiments leading to the discovery of the cooling effect when a gas is allowed to expand freely. This is the founding theory, later used in refrigeration.""The only substantial contribution to thermodynamics to which the joint names of Joule and Thomson are attached belongs to an idea conceived by Thomson, who saw the possibility of analyzing the deviations of gas properties from the ideal behavior. In particular a non-ideal gas, made to expand slowly through a porous plug so as to approximate a specified mathematical condition - constant enthalpy), would in general undergo cooling (essentially a transformation of atomic motion into work spent against the interatomic attractions)....But the appliocation of the Joule-Thomson effect to technology of refrigeration belongs to a later stage in the development of thermodynamics.""(DSB VII, p. 182).The Joule-Thomson effect or Joule-Kelvin effect describes the increase or decrease in the temperature of a real gas (as differentiated from an ideal gas) or a liquid when allowed to expand freely through a valve or other throttling device while kept insulated so that no heat is transferred to or from the fluid, and no external mechanical work is extracted from the fluid. The Joule-Thomson effect is an isenthalpic process, meaning that the enthalpy of the fluid is constant (i.e., does not change) during the process. It is named for James Prescott Joule and William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin who established the effect in 1852, following earlier work by Joule on Joule expansion in which a gas expands at constant internal energy. The Joule-Thomson effect is sometimes referred to as the Joule-Kelvin effect. Engineers often refer to it as simply the J-T effect.‎

‎First appearance of all the 6 founding papers around the invention of the ""Harmonic Analyzer"" and with the mathematical theory for the differential analyzor, containing both the mathematical theories and the practical descriptions of the analyzer and further also having the paper by Lord Kelvin's brother (the first paper offered) in which the machinery is shown for the first time.""A ball and disk integrator was the vital invention needed to build the FIRST AUTOMATIC ANALOG COMPUTING MACHINES. Lord kelvin used this integrator -devised for a planimeter in the 1860s by his brother, James Thomson - on two new kinds of analog computers: a harmonic analyzer and a tide predictor. he later specified a more general machine - a differential analyzer.""(Eames in ""A Computer Perspective"").""The harmonic analyzer was used in conjunction with Thomson's tide predictor...The present paper (""Harmonic Analyzer"") contains the first full description of the harmoniz analyzer, which was ""designed rudimentally"" (p. 371) in Thomson's ""On an integrating machine having a new kinematic principle""(also offered here),,,,James Thomson's integrator - ""one of the first really workable integrating devices"" (Williams 1985, 207) - served as the basis for other analog machines designed by William Thomson for solving simultaneous linear equations and integrating differential equations. Thomson first described such a machine, composed of several Thomson integrators connedted together, in his paper on ""Mechanical integration of the linear differentialequations of the decond order...."" (also offred here)"" however the ""idea could then hardly be carried out, forone reason because an integrator, which is simply a variable- speed drive, could not then be buitl both accurate and capable of carrying sufficient load to move numerous mechanical parts"" (Bush 193, 450). The full realization of Thomson's idea did not come until fifty years later, when Vannevar Bush invented the torque amplifier for use in his differential analyzer.""(Hook and Norman).‎

‎First appearance of Thomson's second paper on the Vortex Atom. In 1882 he had won a prize with the subject ""a general investigation of the action upon each other of two closed vortices in a perfect incompressible fluid""The first attempt to construct a physical model of an atom was made by Lord Kelvin in 1867. The main point was that in an ideal fluid, a vortex line is always composed of the same particles, it remains unbroken, so it is ring-like.""In fact, the investigations of vortices, trying to match their properties with those of atoms, led to a much better understanding of the hydrodynamics of vortices - the constancy of the circulation around a vortex, for example, is known as Kelvin's law. In 1882 another Thomson, J. J., won a prize for an essay on vortex atoms, and how they might interact chemically. After that, though, interest began to wane - Kelvin himself began to doubt that his model really had much to do with atoms, and when the electron was discovered by J. J. in 1897, and was clearly a component of all atoms, different kinds of non-vortex atomic models evolved.""(Michael Fowler).‎

‎On Oxalic Acid. Read January 14th, 1808. (Thomson) (+) On Super-acid and Sub-acid Salts. Read January 28, 1808. (Wollaston). 2 Papers.‎

‎First appearance of these two historical papers in chemistry in which Thomson and Wollaston, independently, presents experimental proofs of John Dalton's ""Law of Multiple Proportions"", and thereby laying the foundations of the Atomic Theory. - These demonstrations went far to influence chemists favorably toward Dalton's atomic theory. ""In January 1808 Thomson was the first to submit an experimental illustration of the law of multiple proportions, doing so at least four months before the publication of Dalton's ""New System of Chemistry Philosophy"" (1808). This paper, ""On Oxalic Acid"" also established a usefull method of determining empirical formulas.""(DSB XIII, p. 373).""This paper is also importent as he here introduces quantified chemical symbolism for compounds, a compound with, for instance, two parts oxygen (w) and one part carbon (c) being denoted by 2w + c."" (Parkinson in ""Breakthroughs"", 1808 C).""In 1808 he (Wollaston) described his experiments on carbonates, sulfates, and oxalates, which proved that the composition of these substances was regulated by the law of multiple proportions. These additional instances of the law were easely verifiable and were often mentioned as standard examples. Wollaston accepted that his findings were merely particular instances of Dalton's assertion that the atoms of elements united one to one, or by simple multiple relation.""(DSB XIV, p.488).‎

‎First printing of these importent papers in which the authors found the so-called Joule-Thomson effect which should be the founding technology in refrigeration. They showed that a gas expanding into vacuum without addition of external work undergo a change in temperature, in spite of the theoretical speculations. The temperature change occurs due to the internal work required to overcome the attractive forces between molecules.""The only substantial contribution to thermodnamics to which the joint names of Joule and Thomson, are attached belongs to an idea conceived by Thomson, who saw the possibility of analyzing the deviations of gas properties from the ideal behavior. In particular, a non-ideal gas, made to expand slowly through a porous plug (so as to approximate a specified mathematical condition—constant enthalpy), would in general undergo a cooling (essentially a transformation of atomic motion into work spent against the interatomic attractions). For the delicate test of this effect Thomson required Joule’s unsurpassed skill (1852). But the application of the Joule- Thomson effect to the technology of refrigeration belongs to a later stage in the development of thermodynamics.""(DSB).Peter Guthrie Tait (1831 - 1901) was a Scottish mathematical physicist, best known for the seminal energy physics textbook Treatise on Natural Philosophy, which he co-wrote with Kelvin, and his early investigations into knot theory, which contributed to the eventual formation of topology as a mathematical discipline. His name is known in graph theory mainly for Tait's conjecture. (His name on the first titlepage).Parkinson ""Breakthroughs"" 1852 C.‎

‎First printing of Bell Labs Magnetron issue. The Magnetron is a high-powered vacuum tube that through a stream of electrons in a magnetic field generates microwaves. This reduced the size of radar sets which made it possible to install them in anti-submarine aircrafts and escort ships. This had a profound influence on the warfare during WWII. Today magnetrons are commonly used in microwave ovens and in various radar applications.""The studies of Fisk, H. D. Hagstrum, and P. L. Hartman [the present paper] increased the understanding of the role that the various possible modes of oscillation played in magnetron operation and the effect of the wire straps - which later evolved into two pair of concentric copper rings.""
