Two sections in one volume: 6 67; 8 166pp. The first section 6 67pp. comprises the company's trade catalogue illustrated with full page photo engravings of valves water gates and fire hydrants; followed by "An Engineering Appendix" 8 166pp. "containing useful rules tables and information". The Appendix is divided into four parts: 1. "General Engineering Data" 2. "Hydrodynamics" 3. "Steam" 4. "Gas". Contemporary calf over boards lettered in gold on the back cover olive green endpapers all edges stained red. Owner's name in ink on front pastedown and head of the Index to the Appendix. The edges of the covers are worn lacking the leather spine back else near fine: the internal text pages illustrations and tables are clean and bright. Founded in 1854 the Chapman Valve Mfg. Co. moved from Boston to Indian Orchard Massachusetts in 1874 where it introduced its line of "List 82 slidegate fire hydrants" that made them famous. Engravings called for in contents consist of a frontispiece <em>'Map of Missionary Stations in the Eastern Hemisphere';</em> <em>'The Kolloh or Devil of the Bulloms'</em>; <em>Fac-simile Specimens of Translations of the Scriptures into the Languages of the East spread over 8 pages</em>; 2 in-text <em>Fac-smiles of New-Zealand signatures; </em>a full-page illustration of a <em>'Hindoo Fakeer'</em>; an in-text '<em>Map of the Northern Part of New-Zealand</em>; a full-page plate depicting both the <em>'Head of Shunghee'</em> and two <em>'New-Zealand Figures' </em>one a jade Tiki the other a wood carving. The collated engravings are all present but the folding map is missing - instead it is bound into the next annual volume in the series M DCCC XVII - which is also for sale and listed as item no. 01AIR1653. This is a full year bound volume of this monthly publication that covers early 19th. century missionary activities across the world. <strong>Hocken p. 36 1813</strong> mentions this monthly publication calling it: <em>'An immense repository of missionary information throughout the world. New Zealand largely represented giving copious extracts from the journals and letters of missionaries etc.'</em> He also specifically identifies that <em>'Abstracts of Marsden's journals are found in</em> this the <em>1816'</em> volume in particular pp. 500-25.</p> L.B. New York: The Circumnavigators' Club 1924. 1924. Very good. - Quarto 11 inches high by 8 inches wide. A 4-page program printed in burgundy red on heavy green stock with a cover illustration of a ship on the front cover and vignettes of Christmas trees along the right edge of the inner page. Printed within under the heading "Who and What" is the humorously worded schedule of events and lectures including such examples as "Richard Hagerman Exconductor of Metropolitan and Chicago Opera Companies and Frazer Gange who sings as man should sing" and "Carveth Wells Laping in the Laps of the Laps". A list of the club's officers is printed on the facing page and the "Circumnavigators' Club Song" appears on the verso. Two copies of the menu with identical offerings are laid within. One copy on 8 inch high by 6-3/8 inch wide stiff creamy white paper is illustrated with a photograph of Cape Town along the top. This menu also offers a "Cold Buffet" as an option which the other does not. There is a chip out from the left of the top edge of this menu with brown stains to that corner. The second menu is printed on stiff 6-3/4 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide stock with an advertisement for a Dutch company along the top and the sentence "Visit our Friday Night Concerts" in Dutch along the bottom. A Chinese Menu Signed By A Number Of Flying Tigers Including The Famous Tex Hill
THE FLYING TIGERS. The Flying Tigers were a volunteer group of American aviators that flew in China to oppose the Japanese invasion. It was organized and headed by Claire Chennault.Signed menu. 9 x 12. No date probably early 1940s. Chicago. A program from Chicagos Bamboo Inn signed by a number of Flying Tigers. The approximately dozen autographs were given to Carmen Morales an actress and exotic dancer from the 1930s and the men signed on the first and last pages of the menu. Some of the signers include Hugh Hutchinson later President of the 14th Air Force Association Major General Charles B. Stone Tex Hill a triple flying ace credited with 12 victories Floyd Finberg and others. Some of the autographs are in Chinese I cannot decipher and a few are in pencil. The overall condition is very good. unknown

ALS. 2pgs. February 2 1932. Lyndon Center Vermont. An autograph letter signed Arthur Merrill Oliver Smith and addressed to his parents. Writing during the Great Depression Smith who was probably a student at the Lyndon Institute boarding school regrets that he cannot come home for the weekend due to a lack of money but instructs his parents not to send more on his behalf: Dear Mother and Dad I had a dandy little day or as dandy as could be expected in a place like this. I got a spauling of sixteen apiece and that was just about 160 whacks too much. I am going to tell you that I am sorry that I will have to stay up here over the weekend because my financial standing is not to allow me to come home but dont think anything is wrong it is only the depression and I will be able to make arrangements to stay here because one of my pals is staying here and I can stay with him. Dont send me any more money to come home on because Ill see if I can help out by not spending any more money than I have to. Write again soon and tell me what you think of it. I have paid all my bills and I will be able to make out O.K. Write soon. Much Love Your 16 yr old Son Arthur Merrill Oliver Smith Amos Budge Smith. Illustrated unbound pamphlet wrapper folded with toning and some soiling along edge on recto two spots on verso and small tear near center at edge of page on verso; two typescript leaves folded in: Anna Cora Mowatt's prologue to Fashion and Count Jolimaitre prologue from the Provincetown Player's production; a typescript leaf with a subscription handbill laid in; overall a very good copy of a scarce program and novel piece of New York and theatre history. Single leaf wrapper folded; two typescript leaves; one handbill. 4to. The Greenwich Village Theatre playhouse opened on November 15 1917 on Sheridan Square at Christopher Street where W. 4th Street and 7th Avenue meet and was designed by Herman Lee Meader in a Dutch Colonial style. Actor Frank Conroy was integral in its development and ran the theatre. As early cinema became popular in 1921 The Greenwich started showing films between play engagements. The theatre caused controversy with some residents of Greenwich Village who took offense at the Bohemian lifestyles the space cultivated and promoted and many complaints were lobbied against it over incidents such as a "lewd poster" for an Audrey Munson film Heedless Moths.<br /> <br /> In May 1926 the theater management announced that it had merged with the Actors' Theatre. The name Actors' Theatre was retained and while its permanent home had not been decided upon the announcement made one thing clear: "It will not be the Greenwich Village." <br /> <br /> In January 1928 N. Brewster Morse signed a five-year lease with owner Marguerite A. Barker. Marguerite Abbott Barker b.1893 - d.1930 was a woman of wealth through her father who was president of Eastman Kodak. She was very active in the Greenwich Village theatre scene and hoped to provide a more experimental approach to the theatre experience that included "musical dramatic and motion picture features with a change of program every two weeks." In the lounge area art exhibitions were to be held "where tea coffee and cigarettes will be served during the intermissions." Among the first films screened was Paul Fejos's The Last Moment described by one critic as an "impressionistic picture." She intended to show "unusual films at popular prices" beginning on April 9 1928. <br /> <br /> Fashion was the first play produced by a woman playwright Anna Cora Mowatt in 1845 and revived by the Provincetown Players the original Players included George Cram Cook Susan Glaspell Eugene O'Neill John Reed Louise Bryant Floyd Dell Ida Rauh Edna St. Vincent Millay and Djuna Barnes who maintained residence The Provincetown Playhouse at 133 MacDougal Street. This production for The Greenwich Village Theatre ran from April to July 1924 and in the program here states Eugene O'Neill among it's directors.<br /> <br /> On February 4 1930 The New York Times announced "Demolition of the Greenwich Village Theatre on the northwest corner of Christopher and Fourth Streets.will begin early in March." The article explained that developers George and Edward Blum had filed plans for a 19-story apartment building the tallest in Greenwich Village. The demolished theater was replaced with the two-story Art Deco style Stewarts Cafeteria building that survives significantly altered at street level. unknown

THE HOWDY CLUB. The Howdy Club was a World War Two-era lesbian bar and entertainment venue in Manhattan. A commemorative miniature hammer from New York lesbian nightclub The Howdy Club. The wooden handle reads Howdy Revue / 47 West 3rd St Greenwich Village / Dining Dancing Revue. The club operated in the 1930s and 1940s before its shows were shut down by police in 1944. Though the club admitted both men and women and GIs sometimes hung out there during World War Two the venue and its shows were known to cater to a lesbian audience at a time where women-only nightlife of any kind was rare. <p>The Hummer early 20th century. . Very good. - A set of seven photographs on 4 inch wide by 6 inch high card stock portraying female nudes in classic poses. The photographs are housed in a 4-7/8 inch wide by 7-1/2 inch high tan printed envelope with a lengthy enticing title printed on one side of the envelope. The roughly opened & soiled envelope is chipped with tears along the top and wear to the edges. The photographs are in near fine condition.</p><p>The photos are respectively titled along the bottom margin: "The Bather of the Glen" "A Classic Figure Valuable to Students Artists and Sculptors" "The Sculptor's Model - A Greek Classic Figure" "Feminine Beauty" "Model Study of the Full Figure" "The Dancer" and "Adolescence".</p><p>Although the envelope implies that "Tales" are also enclosed only the photographs are here present.</p> [The Hummer], early 20th century.

Paginated consecutively. Pp. vi 554. Illustrated throughout. HARDCOVER bound in the original publisher's half calf and marbled boards spine decorated lettered and dated in gilt sides gilt ruled; binding rubbed & chafed in places worn in places restored in places withal a good binding; few closed tears without loss at bottom of leaves. In a very good condition. Overall a well preserved tightly bound clean presentable copy. ~ FIRST EDITION. The paper's first issue first complete volume first complete year. Published as a volume with Title Preface and Index in 7 January 1843. Rare survivor a landmark in the history of journalism. The Illustrated London News was the world's first illustrated weekly newspaper. The first issue 16 pages with 32 woodcuts appeared on Saturday 14 May 1842 marking a revolution in journalism and news reporting. Completely exceeding the publishers' expectations it had to be reprinted several times that day; the issue went through five reprints and sold 26000 copies; the present issue is of the fourth printing. Issues 4-8; 10-16; 18-20; 24; 27; 28; 30; 34 are first reprint; issue no. 2 is 3rd reprint; no. 9 is 2nd reprint. Five issues later it was time for jubilation: "Probably in the whole annals of Newspaper History the triumphant success of 'The Illustrated London News' is without a parallel; it has received from the public a welcome warmer and wider than we could anticipated even in the buoyant enthusiasm of our first ambition. From the length and breadth of the Empire we have received the most flattering testimonials." The present volume contains all first 34 issues and a Supplement. Each issue is stamped at bottom with the legendary red Tax Stamp. Also present is Issue no. 15 a rare collectible in itself which appeared with the erroneous header "No. 10 July 16" instead of "No. 15 August 20". It is neatly corrected here by contemporary hand. With 23 maps many folding; the large folding map covering all of China is housed in a pocket inside the rear board. Laden with black-and-white photos both in text and dedicated plates. Glossary of words in English Russian Chinese and Japanese. Index. Endpaper maps. Bound in cinnamon-colored cloth stamped with gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. Silk bookmark bound in. Light wear. Some maps with short closed tears or pinholes at fold intersections. With the rubber stamp and blindstamp of one Captain Claude L. Ball a resident of Sequim Washington; the blindstamp shows that address whereas the rubber stamp offers an APO care of the postmaster in San Francisco. Withal a well preserved presentable copy. A Baedeker of sorts for Asia but with greater detail and photos than the German counterpart. The series was published in four volumes in successive years in the mid-1910s. The first volume covers Manchuria and Chosen the second Southwestern Japan the third Northeastern Japan and this volume on China being the fourth and last in the series as well as the most sought-after.</p> <p>Japan's rising confidence and stature following the Russo-Japanese War the first modern military conflict in which an Asian country prevailed over a European enemy bolstered its imperial ambition which begat an aggressive foreign policy; the non-Japan guides in the series underscore the depth of Japan's understanding of their neighbors. This volume's chapter on "Social Classes and Customs" provides great detail on class divisions housing festivals and other cultural aspects including food and drink and among other sections one devoted to opium smoking.</p> .
