Charles Bestland Cantelowe Bestland Royal Academy Schools artist. Twelve Regency pencil portraits for engraving middle-class sitters including James Millar Encyclopaedia Britannica editor; Col. Serle; members of Trenchard family of Dorset.
English. The twelve dated in pencil between 1811 and 1829. Twelve pencil portraits executed in the same extremely capable style probably for the purposes of engraving. Each on a separate piece of 4to paper. All in good condition with light signs of age and wear a couple with minor flecking with red paint. All dated in pencil between 1811 and 1829 and all but two captioned. Several of the items with watermark date supporting the pencil dating. Three of the portraits have the tiny signature at bottom left of 'Bestland' and all would appear to be the work of the same artist although the last appears to be signed with the initials 'C H'. Apparently the work of the artist and engraver Charles Bestland 1763-c.1837 otherwise Cantelowe Bestland possibly of West End Hampstead who entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1779 as 'Cantlo Bestland' and exhibited miniatures from 1783 to 1837. See the 1802 engraving by 'Cantelowe Bestland' of Henry Singleton's painting of the Royal Academicians in council. Several embossed with details of a Bath stationers and a number of the sitters from Dorset perhaps implying a West Country connection. The last of the twelve is of particular interest as it is depicts a countryman while the other eleven portraits are of members of the middle classes. The only sitter of note is the editor of the fourth edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica James Millar 1762-1827 of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh lecturer at Edinburgh University. The sketch in light pencil is on a 22.5 x 18.5 cm piece of watermarked laid paper captioned in pencil at top left 'J Millar Esqr. March 20. 1823'. It shows a seated Millar in early old age in waistcoat and unbuttoned frock coat holding a book or papers in his right hand. The only other likeness of Millar noted in his entry in the Oxford DNB a crayon drawing by John Henning now in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery shows a younger Millar in profile but the set of the mouth and lower face are the same. The other eleven portraits are as follows. TWO: 28 March 1811. 'Mrs Donne' wife of Rev. Henry Donne 1767-1830 of Cranborne Dorset whose obituary see in Gent. Mag. 'Mrs Cooper'. Only the head of a middle-aged woman with ringlets. FIVE: 12 November 1821. The Order in Council is three pages folio on two leaves of gilt-edged laid paper. Good though slightly discoloured dusty at head and with several closed tears and stab marks along one edge. Small square cut away from corner of second leaf not affecting text. Entirely legible in a clear neat hand. Headed '1371 Tobago' and stamped 'Received March 25 1829.' The minutes two pages folio on same paper with the papered seal of the Island of Tobago at head of first page. Good but folded and with fraying at extremities and discoloration at head and with small square cut away at foot as in the order itself. Describes the Order as 'an additional Instruction to the Governor of the Island of Tobago altering the mode of disposing of the Church Patronage in the said Island'. Signed 'C Greville'. The letter proper is three pages long on a bifolium and is accompanied by a two-page 'list of times & places' on a separate leaf. Very good on lightly-aged paper. With 18 x 23 cm letterhead on the cover of which Thornton has written 'To Sir Robert Head. Bart. III Zimmer Strasse 97 Hier.' with his signature 'C. Thornton' in the bottom left-hand corner. The letter begins: 'Dear Lady Head I inclose herewith a list of times & places for tonight's function which will I hope prove sufficient.' Thornton is also inclosing 'a card to be placed in the Coachman's hat and which will enable your carriage to get out of the ordinary ruck'. He asks her to be 'very careful to recover the card from the Coachman' and to return it 'as we shall require it in the evening'. He ends by stating when the Thorntons propose to leave their house 'as even with the Cards progress may be slow.' The separate leaf carrying the 'list of times & places' referred to in the letter is also on an official letterhead and begins: 'Invitation for 7 o'c precisely. Carriages to enter Palace by Portal No. 5 and to proceed to the door of the Staircase Wendeltreppe To assemble in the Brandenburgische Kammer and Rothe sic Kammer. Throne room in the Rittersaal. After the reception we shall descend the staircase known as Weisse-Saal Treppe and the carriages will be in waiting under Portal No. 3'. Printed on shiny paper. Folded three times. The note with good firm signature reads: ‘Louis B. Frewer Esq / Dear Sir / Autograph enclosed with much pleasure. To-day is the 49th. anniversary of my wedding. / Yours faithfully / Charles Coborn’. The letterhead has Coborn’s name printed in large type and describes him as ‘Comedian Vocalist Story-teller etc. and Walker’. It also mentions his two most famous songs stating of ‘Two Lovely Black Eyes’ ‘The Chorus of which he sings in Nine Languages’. At top-left of the page is printed a full-length caricature of a smiling Coborn in walking outfit beside milestone by Thomas Downey with facsimile signature beneath which are described his walking exploits ‘aggregating over 3000 miles in the United Kingdom giving recitals en route. 78 years young and STILL GOING STRONG’. In small type in the left hand margin are printed ‘Some Appreciations’ including quotations from ‘Her Majesty the Queen’ ‘Lady Tree’ ‘A High Dignitary of the Church’ ‘The Press. Limited Editions Club 1975 A most attractive edition by this fine publisher with the original prospectus included. Number 1260 of only 2000 copies. Signed by the illustrator. Slipcase has an attractive wrap around paper label fixed on the outside. The book is bound in calf skin leather on the spine with an indented area for the handsome black and gold title label which is made of skiver leather and is inset. The leather wraps around to the cover boards which have twelve drawings on the front and back. Issued without a jacket this is in great if not perfect condition; the spine leather is a little scuffed. Attractive full page colour illustrations and chapter vignettes by Raymond F. Houlihan who has signed this copy on the limitation page at the back of the book. This is copy number 1260 of 2000 subscription only copies. A most desirable issue from this wonderful small American press where books were produced to a standard not down to a price. The National Portrait Gallery copy of this item is NPG Ax17292 and the dating to September 1863 is theirs. A 5.8 x 8.8 cm photographic print laid down on 6.2 x 10.3 cm piece of card. On the card beneath the portrait: 'JOHN WATKINS PHOT. / Copyright Secured'. On the reverse Watkins's full address with crest. The image is faded and indistinct compared with the NPG copy; otherwise the item is In fair condition lightly aged. A head and shoulders shot with a sepulchral Dickens turned almost to a left profile eyes barely open with a clenched right hand to the side of his face. Notting Hill Belfast Ireland on letterhead of the Ulster Club. 28 January 1882. 2pp. 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In envelope with stamp and postmark addressed by Yonge to 'J. J. Bacon sic Esq 18 Griffin St. Welton Blackburn Lancashire'. Good on lightly-aged paper in worn envelope. He informs him that his edition of Plutarch's 'Parallel Lives' was published by Chapman & Hall. 'I hear that they have lately published a new Edition: but old Mr Chapman the head of the firm is dead Edward Chapman 1804-1880 & since that I have heard nothing of the firm which has now I believe been made into a limited Company.' Dr John M. Crawford Charles Dury Professor Herbert S. Osborn American entomologists. Thirteen Autograph Cards Signed ten from Dury two from Crawford and one from Osborn to the Coleoptera expert Charles G. Siewers of Newport Kentucky.
All sent from Cincinnati Ohio. Six of the thirteen dated between 1880 and 1882 the year of Siewers's death. The others undated. The thirteen cards are all 13 x 7.5cm. All with 'POSTAL CARD' printed on front and all with Cincinnati postmarks nine also carrying Newport postmarks. All thirteen addressed to Siewers at Newport. For information on Charles Dury 1847-1901 see his obituary by Annette F. Braun in the Ohio Journal of Science November 1931 pp.512-514. Braun stresses Dury's wide correspondence and association with individuals including Alfred Russell Wallace E. D. Cope Spencer F. Baird George Horn John L. LeConte Robert Ridgway Elliott Coues and his 'companion of many field trips' Professor J. S. Hine. Dury contributed the obituary of the recipient of these thirteen items Siewers's obituary dated from Avondale 4 October 1882 to the Canadian Entomologist September 1882 p.176: 'Charles G. Siewers died at his residence Newport Ky. Sept. 6th in the 68th year of his age. For many years he has been a devoted and enthusiastic student of entomology. He spent much time in rearing the larvae of Lepidoptera making colored drawings of them through their stages of growth. He collected largely in Coleoptera and was a very accurate observer of habits. It is due to his skill as a collector that some of the rarest species have been recorded as occurring in this locality.' The thirteen cards are all 13 x 7.5cm and all closely written carrying as much text as an ordinary letter. All with 'POSTAL CARD' printed on front and all with Cincinnati postmarks nine also carrying Newport postmarks. All thirteen addressed to Charles G. Siewers c.1814-1882 at Newport Kentucky. The collection in fair condition aged and lightly-worn. The three writers were all men of note. Professor Herbert S. Osborn 1856-1954 would serve as chairman of the Department of Zoology and Entomology at The Ohio State University between 1898 and 1916. John Martin Crawford 1845-1916 of the Chickering Classical and Scientific Institute in Cincinnati was an American physician and scholar who translated the Finnish epic Kalevala into English. For information on the entomologist Charles Dury 1847-1901 see his obituary by Annette F. Braun in the Ohio Journal of Science November 1931 pp.512-514. Braun stresses Dury's wide correspondence and association with individuals including Alfred Russell Wallace E. D. Cope Spencer F. Baird George Horn John L. M. Levette John Bernard Smith Dr. John Hamilton Henry Edwards and James Chamberlain Crawford. Six of Dury's ten cards are signed 'C. D.' three are signed 'C. Dury' and one 'Chas. Dury'. One is addressed from Avondale and one from '#144 ½ Wal St Cin. O.' He gives news of his activities in a chatty and enthusiastic style of which the following dated 9 September 1881 is an example: 'My Dr. Sir Your card recd. I can not get out for the present I am trying to keep a lot of fish with belly side down! And in such weather that is a job in tanks so small & hot. I wouldnt object to see rain even though I got wet! I got a small box from Wenzel and one from J. B. Smith of Brooklyn - both had something new to me in them - Wenzel sends some gratiosa which he says are "new & pure"! - I will "safe" sic you Promethea larvae If I get any which is not likely unless it gets cool & wet as I cant leave these infernal fish - drop me a line Yours in haste'. One card with crude drawing of 'the Democratic rooster'. On 14 January 1881 he jokes: 'Saw Huntington he has been down in Ga. collecting!! got 1 beetle!!!! . I told him to bring his shovel down & collect in Avondale it would only cost him 10c for fare!' Crawford's two cards are each written over a printed message by him on behalf of the Cincinnati Society of Natural History. Both are written in a businesslike fashion and one extremely closely comprising 40 lines regarding a 'blunder' over a box of beetles. Osborn writes concerning an exchange of 'specimens'. All sent from Cincinnati, Ohio. Six of the thirteen dated between 1880 and 1882 (the year of Siewers's death). The others undate unknown
