‎Charles Dury of Cincinnati; John Martin Crawford of the Chickering Institute, Ohio; Professor Herbert S Osborn [Charles G Siewer‎

‎Dr John M. Crawford Charles Dury Professor Herbert S. Osborn American entomologists. Thirteen Autograph Cards Signed ten from Dury two from Crawford and one from Osborn to the Coleoptera expert Charles G. Siewers of Newport Kentucky.‎

‎All sent from Cincinnati Ohio. Six of the thirteen dated between 1880 and 1882 the year of Siewers's death. The others undated. The thirteen cards are all 13 x 7.5cm. All with 'POSTAL CARD' printed on front and all with Cincinnati postmarks nine also carrying Newport postmarks. All thirteen addressed to Siewers at Newport. For information on Charles Dury 1847-1901 see his obituary by Annette F. Braun in the Ohio Journal of Science November 1931 pp.512-514. Braun stresses Dury's wide correspondence and association with individuals including Alfred Russell Wallace E. D. Cope Spencer F. Baird George Horn John L. LeConte Robert Ridgway Elliott Coues and his 'companion of many field trips' Professor J. S. Hine. Dury contributed the obituary of the recipient of these thirteen items Siewers's obituary dated from Avondale 4 October 1882 to the Canadian Entomologist September 1882 p.176: 'Charles G. Siewers died at his residence Newport Ky. Sept. 6th in the 68th year of his age. For many years he has been a devoted and enthusiastic student of entomology. He spent much time in rearing the larvae of Lepidoptera making colored drawings of them through their stages of growth. He collected largely in Coleoptera and was a very accurate observer of habits. It is due to his skill as a collector that some of the rarest species have been recorded as occurring in this locality.' The thirteen cards are all 13 x 7.5cm and all closely written carrying as much text as an ordinary letter. All with 'POSTAL CARD' printed on front and all with Cincinnati postmarks nine also carrying Newport postmarks. All thirteen addressed to Charles G. Siewers c.1814-1882 at Newport Kentucky. The collection in fair condition aged and lightly-worn. The three writers were all men of note. Professor Herbert S. Osborn 1856-1954 would serve as chairman of the Department of Zoology and Entomology at The Ohio State University between 1898 and 1916. John Martin Crawford 1845-1916 of the Chickering Classical and Scientific Institute in Cincinnati was an American physician and scholar who translated the Finnish epic Kalevala into English. For information on the entomologist Charles Dury 1847-1901 see his obituary by Annette F. Braun in the Ohio Journal of Science November 1931 pp.512-514. Braun stresses Dury's wide correspondence and association with individuals including Alfred Russell Wallace E. D. Cope Spencer F. Baird George Horn John L. LeConte Robert Ridgway Elliott Coues and his 'companion of many field trips' Professor J. S. Hine. Dury contributed Siewers's obituary dated from Avondale 4 October 1882 to the Canadian Entomologist September 1882 p.176: 'Charles G. Siewers died at his residence Newport Ky. It is due to his skill as a collector that some of the rarest species have been recorded as occurring in this locality.' The thirteen items are concerned with the four men's field of interest and contain references to fellow entomologists J. B. Smith of Brooklyn Professor F. H. Snow H. W. Wenzel Ottomar Reinecke Dr G. M. Levette John Bernard Smith Dr. John Hamilton Henry Edwards and James Chamberlain Crawford. Six of Dury's ten cards are signed 'C. D.' three are signed 'C. Dury' and one 'Chas. Dury'. One is addressed from Avondale and one from '#144 ½ Wal St Cin. O.' He gives news of his activities in a chatty and enthusiastic style of which the following dated 9 September 1881 is an example: 'My Dr. Sir Your card recd. I can not get out for the present I am trying to keep a lot of fish with belly side down! And in such weather that is a job in tanks so small & hot. I wouldnt object to see rain even though I got wet! I got a small box from Wenzel and one from J. B. Smith of Brooklyn - both had something new to me in them - Wenzel sends some gratiosa which he says are "new & pure"! - I will "safe" sic you Promethea larvae If I get any which is not likely unless it gets cool & wet as I cant leave these infernal fish - drop me a line Yours in haste'. One card with crude drawing of 'the Democratic rooster'. On 14 January 1881 he jokes: 'Saw Huntington he has been down in Ga. collecting!! got 1 beetle!!!! . I told him to bring his shovel down & collect in Avondale it would only cost him 10c for fare!' Crawford's two cards are each written over a printed message by him on behalf of the Cincinnati Society of Natural History. Both are written in a businesslike fashion and one extremely closely comprising 40 lines regarding a 'blunder' over a box of beetles. Osborn writes concerning an exchange of 'specimens'. All sent from Cincinnati, Ohio. Six of the thirteen dated between 1880 and 1882 (the year of Siewers's death). The others undate unknown‎

‎Charles G.J.B. Elliot China Station; Canton; Crimean War; Franklin; HMS Sybille Substantial Autograph Letter Signed 'Chas JB Elliot' to 'Geo'‎

‎Sybille Singapore 18 Nov. 1854. Four pages 8vo fold marks good condition. He congratulates his correspondent on promotion adding "We may call you chancellor in good earnest now and a very respectable title it is too for a lawyer". He speculates on the consequences of his promotion suggesting he might eventually become a Bishop jokingly. continuing "Now I will not write any more as I have had enough of that work today - tho I forgot that I have not written to any of you home people - as I suppose my Father will be abroad again when this reaches. Lotty's wife letter was the 5 Oct. from Minto when you had not yet heard particulars of the battle of Alma - our latest papers give us he details - with the List of killed & wounded which I confess it was a great relief to get altho it is a long one - We knew a fortnight ago of the action having taken place & heard the account of loss - amonst which we were told the number of officers was great - and amongst some regiments it certainly has been heavy - We are now told that our troops are in possession of the heights commanding Sebastopol but know little about how they got there or what they have been about since the battle of Alma - but I won't write about that as I have been doing so all day & this is no good in my telling; you know how much I don't know but I look out anxiously to hear from you & others what you do know. Collinson Admiral Richard Collinson in the Enterprise has arrived at Hong Kong. So I hope we now have back all the Franklin searchers." Notes from Wikipedia: ". Promoted to lieutenant on 27 June 1838 he was appointed to the second-rate HMS Rodney in August 1838. He transferred to the sixth-rate HMS Talbot in the Mediterranean Fleet in October 1838. Promoted to commander on 16 July 1840 he became commanding officer of the sloop HMS Hazard in July 1840 and was involved in the bombardment of Acre in November 1840 during the Egyptian–Ottoman War. Promoted to captain on 16 August 1841 he went on to be commanding officer of the sixth-rate HMS Spartan on the North America and West Indies Station in August 1841 and commanding officer of the fifth-rate HMS Sybille on the East Indies and China Station in May 1853 . Elliott became commodore on the East Indies and China Station with his broad pennant in the screw gunboat HMS Haughty in January 1855. In October 1856 a small unit of Chinese soldiers boarded the British-flagged lorcha Arrow and kidnapped twelve of the crew so initiating the Second Opium War. The British Consul Harry Parkes demanded return of the men an apology and assurances of respect for the British flag. The crew were released but without any apology or assurances. In response the Commander-in-Chief on the East Indies and China Station Rear-Admiral Sir Michael Seymour decided to enter Canton. In late October 1856 Eliott led a unit of 300 sailors and marines which successfully breached the walls of the city and then in early November 1856 he led another unit which destroyed 23 Chinese war-junks in the estuary South of Canton. After that in May 1857 he led a small squadron of British ships which pursued a fleet of 41 Chinese war-junks at the Battle of Escape Creek: his squadron chased the war-junks upriver and then once the British ships were grounded as the river narrowed they chased them in the ships' boats until all the war-junks had been overhauled. Elliot also took part in the larger action under Commodore Henry Keppel involving around 100 war-junks at the Battle of Fatshan Creek in June 1857. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath on 12 September 1857. ETC." Sybille, Singapore, 18 Nov. 1854 unknown‎

The first paragraph reads: 'That your memorialist although a french Emigrant is descended from two ancient and noble British families both by his father and mother and holds at present the rank of major general in the British Service - having resided in England since the year 1790 during which period after his services in the Emigrants Army became unnecessary he devoted his attentions to objects of Science and has published several works on Astronomy Navigation History &c tending to discoveries particularly on Nautical Science and on the history of Mauritius; which having met the approbation of men of talents and the patronage of Government your memorialist humbly hopes that his labours will ultimately prove beneficial to this country and to his unfortunate and numerous family.' The second paragraph concerns 'a large tract of Land in Canada' granted to him in 1794 'with a view to remove to that country a considerable number of french Emigrants who were to be conducted by him'. The third paragraph concerns 'the island of Mauritius where your memorialist was born' where his father 'the late Baron Grant &c commanded the troops' which has been 'conquered by his majesty's arms and is a valuable colony of Great Britain' The fourth paragraph concerns his family he having married 'a native of this country by whom he has eight children not provided for all born in England'. In the fifth paragraph he stresses his 'loyalty and integrity'. In conclusion he prays that 'your Lordship be pleased to issue an order that his Grant of land may be conferred to him in the isle of France 'the Isle of France' was another name for Mauritius his native country in lieu of the grant in Canada which was extensive according to his rank and numerous family'. Biographical/Historical NoteCharles Grant vicomte de Vaux was the descendant of a family of nobles who had emigrated from Scotland to France in the 14th century. Vaux was born in 1749 on the island of Mauritius where his father Louis-Charles Grant the Baron de Vaux served as governor. As a youth Vaux sailed to France to be educated and settled at Vaux-sur-Seulle in Normandy and eventually became an army officer. During the American Revolution he sided with the colonists and earned money selling supplies to the colonies and investing in ships to engage in privateering. The majority of the ships were lost and after the war Vaux petitioned the United States Congress for compensation. Though Vaux considered emigrating to North America he remained in France until forced by the revolution in France to flee to Great Britain in 1790. During his time as a refugee Vaux became interested in the prospect of starting a settlement in Canada and much of his energy during the next decade was focused on gaining permissions and raising money for the expedition. In the mid-1790s Vaux attempted to support himself as an army officer after being granted the position of colonel and permission to recruit a regiment which he formed with other French émigrés; it was stationed temporarily in Holland. This pursuit failed however and the regiment was dispersed after France invaded Holland during the French Revolutionary wars. Vaux then turned to writing to support himself publishing numerous books which included History of Mauritius and Introduction to Four New Maps of the Four Quarters all the while still attempting to plan a Canadian settlement. Despite his constant petitioning planning and pleas for aid Vaux was never able to realize his dream of moving to Canada. Little is known of the last two decades of his life but he is thought to have died in France around 1818." Grant Cottage, King's Road, Sloane Square [London]. 21 January 1813. unknown‎

‎Cholera; Charles Greville celebrated diarist and first-class cricketer. Autograph Signature 'C Greville' to part of letter.‎

‎No place. 28 November 1831. The Greville Memoirs caused an uproar on its publication in 1874. Queen Victoria described it as a 'dreadful and really scandalous book' which should be 'severely censored and discredited'. Disraeli characterised its author as 'the vainest being—I don't limit myself to man—that ever existed; and I don't forget Cicero and Lytton Bulwer … when he was not scandalous he was prolix and prosy—a clumsy wordy writer … a more verbose indefinite unwieldy affair without a happy expression never issued from the pen of a fagged subordinate of the daily press'. On both sides of a piece of paper cut from a letter. In good condition lightly aged. The verso reads: 'Sir Your Most Obedt Servant C Greville 28 Nov. 1831 A Report to be transmitted accordingly on Monday in every Week. -' The recto reads: '… requesting by desire of Viscoun<t> Palmerston that a Weekly Repo<rt> may be made out and transmi<tted> to that Department relative to the state of health in London with reference to Cholera Morb<us> I am to desire that you will …'. Note: "The first incidence of cholera in England occurred in Sunderland in October 1831 when a ship carrying sailors who had the disease docked at the port. The ship was allowed to dock because the port authorities objected to and therefore ignored instructions from the government to quarantine all ships coming from the Baltic states. From Sunderland the disease made its way northwards into Scotland and southwards toward London. Before it had run its course the disease had claimed some 52000 lives." ‎Charles Hill (1904-1989), Baron Hill of Luton [Lord Hill], BBC 'Radio Doctor', Conservative MP, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lanca‎

‎Three Autograph Letters Signed and three Typed Letters Signed all 'Charles' from the Chairman of the BBC Governors Lord Hill to the Observer journalist Hugh Massingham mainly regarding their collaboration on the two volumes of his memoirs.‎

‎On letterheads of Bury Knowle Milton Road Harpenden; The Independent Television Authority 70 Brompton Road London SW3; Winch Hill House Wandon End near Luton; and last three from Broadcasting House London W1. 1963 1 1967 1 and 1968 4. Totalling 5pp. 4to and 3pp. 12mo. The six items in good condition on lightly-aged paper with the first three in autograph and the last three from Broadcasting House typed. Hill begins the first letter 22 April 1963 with the assertion that he is 'taking heed' of Massingham's 'stimulating advice' and this sets the tone of the whole correspondence. In the same letter he reports that he has finished an 'unexciting piece on the Post Office' and that he is recasting two chapters of his memoirs 'Both Sides of the Hill' published the following year: 'I recognise their particular importance & I will send the rewritten chapters back to you in a week or so.' He concludes: 'Our collaboration is helping me enormously as I expected.' The last four letters all from 1968 would concern the second volume of Hill's memoirs not published until 1974 as 'Behind the Screen'. They contain references to Graham Watson Denis Hamilton and Hill's and Massingham's 'agent for the arrangement with the Sunday Times' regarding the first volume of memoirs Dwye Evans. There is also a discussion of 'a tax point': 'A volume of memoirs is as you know counted as the publication of one's papers and so a capital exercise and is tax free. This is Volume 2 and there is no reason I suppose why it will not be regarded in the same category as Volume 1. But if we sell direct to a newspaper they are I suppose buying articles rather than book instalments.' On 6 August 1968 he states that his 'immediate reaction on reading that sneering piece in the Sunday Telegraph on "broadcasting and the Public Mood" was that I didn't want to go on with the piece. Perry Worsthorne's piece was excellent even if it was critical'. In the final letter 16 September 1968 he praises an interview with Massingham as 'very helpful to me. Your competitors are not pleased!' On letterheads of Bury Knowle, Milton Road, Harpenden; The Independent Television Authority, 70 Brompton Road, London SW3; Winch unknown‎

‎12 pages with crest to title page. Quarto 11 1/4" x 8" single folded sheet housed in a custom made enclosure. First edition.<br /><br />Cedula Latin means in general an order or authorization; in earlier times such a document on the authority of the king or a royal decree which for Spain and Spanish America was a decree issued directly by the monarch.<br /><br />During the second half of the eighteenth century the Spanish Crown monopolized the tobacco industry in its American colonies creating vertically integrated organisations which included factories for the production of cigars and cigarettes. Few economic activities were more vital to the development of the Spanish American economies that the cultivation manufacture and commercialization of tobacco. Tobacco was the second most important export industry in Spanish America at the time. The decision of the Bourbon monarchs to monopolize the industry was a critical component of their plan to increase government revenues through a renewed contract with the colonists. This Spanish royal decree issued at the end of the War of American Independence to take effect January 1 1784 alters the basis for the tobacco trade set up as a monopoly under Phillip V and establishing new regulations for the business. This decree mainly affected the American colonies including Louisiana.<br /><br /><b>Condition:</b><br /><br />Some soiling on front and back; last page has columns of numbers and damp-stain along edge one inner page heavily soiled near head else a very good copy in a fine enclosure. Backed with tissue some old dampstaining some loss at margins but printed area complete except for a very small area of the royal arms. Old folds rust marks along with marginal wear suggest that this may at one time have been "affixt to some conspicuous place" as the text instructs. Printed broadside. Woodcut royal arms at head large decorative initial capital. 1 vols. 14-1/2 x 11-1/4 inches. King's Evil and the Royal Touch. From the Middle Ages in England and France it was believed that scrofula or "the King's Evil" could be cured by the touch of royalty; ceremonies were held in which the King would touch and "heal" hundreds of afflicted subjects. <br/>By the late 1400s it was believed that one could also be cured by touching a type of coin called an angel which had been touched by the monarch. After angels ceased to be minted in the 1620s the same effect was said to be achieved by touching a gold medallion embossed much like the old coin.<br/>Some monarchs touched many people. King Henry IV of France touched up to 1500 at one time. The last English monarch to carry out this practice was Queen Anne who died in 1714 but it continued in France. Louis XV touched more than 2000 scrofula sufferers and the last French monarch to do this was Charles X in 1825 Science Museum London. Cf. F Barlow "The King's Evil" The English Historical Review 95/374 January 1980 pp 3-27; M BlochThe Royal Touch: Sacred Monarchy and Scrofula in England and France London: Routledge & Kegan Paul 1973.<br/>The present broadside setting the dates for such ceremonies is rare on the market: no copies are listed for sale and none have appeared at auction. It also is signed in type by Lord Chief Justice George Jeffryes sic "The Hanging Judge" amongst others.<br/>An interesting manuscript note in a contemporary hand at the lower margin with significant loss calls the attention of "All Parsons Vicars and Curates" to the regulations set forth in the broadside.
