A BRIGHT COLOR PORTRAIT OF THE FRENCH STATESMAN WHO LED THE NATION IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR SIGNED BY GEORGES CLEMENCEAU.
Paris November 1929. 1929. Fair. - A 7-1/2 inch high by 4-7/8 inch wide color portrait of Georges Clemenceau mounted into an 11 inch high by 7-1/8 inch wide mat. The portrait depicts the French Prime Minister from the shoulders up a period hat above his heavy white eyebrows and mustache. Signed "Clemenceau" in ink on the mat below the image. The portrait mounted with glue from the verso is scratched heavily creased and subsequently waxed to protect it. The crude mat's backing is stained and the keyhole mat itself is cracked at the bottom and top edges. <p>An autograph letter accompanying the signed portrait attests that Clemenceau signed the portrait on his deathbed. The letter dated November 29 1929 reads as follows: "Monsieur Monsieur Clemenceau ayant signe cette photographie que vous lui avez envoyee la veille de sa mort je me fais le devoir de vous l'envoyer. Bien respectueusement." Clemenceau died 5 days earlier on November 24th. This letter has been folded for mailing.<p>The leader of the Radical Party Georges Clemenceau played a central role during France's Third Republic serving as it's Prime Minister from 1906 to 1909 and subsequently leading the nation in the First World War. He again served as his nation's Prime Minister from 1917 to 1920. One of the principal architects of the Treaty of Versailles he pushed for the restitution of Alsace-Lorraine to France.<p>Provenance: From the autograph collection of Seymour Halpern.<p>The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. Paris, November, 1929. unknown

Clement Scott Clement William Scott theatre critic of the Daily Telegraph. Two copies of studio portrait postcard of Scott both signed and inscribed by him with a similarly inscribed postcard of his second wife.
One of Scott's cards dated by him to 1902 the other with postmark of Ingatestone Essex dated 1904; his wife's dated 1906. Place not stated. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The postcards are bromide prints and 9 x 14 cm. The two identical images of Scott dressed for the theatre with curled moustache and flower in his buttonhole are both inscribed. In the bottom margin of one he has written ‘late of the D. T.’; in the same position on the other and rather poignantly considering his later history ‘Remember me / Clement Scott / 1902’. The former card is addressed by Scott on the reverse with Ingatestone postmark dated 27 February 1904 to ‘Mr S. Le Sage / Maisonette / Ingatestone / Essex’. In her photograph Mrs Scott is also dressed for the theatre with fur wrap and muff. At top left she has written ‘May-Day / 1906’ and beneath the portrait: ‘Affectionate greetings from / yours Margaret sic Clement Scott’. The card dated by Scott to 1902 has a central horizontal crease; the other two cards are in good condition lightly aged and worn. See image. On letterhead of 15 Woburn Square W.C. London 15 October 1895. 2pp. 8vo. In good condition on lightly aged and worn paper. The letter has been marked up in manuscript for publication with the heading: 'Mr. Clement Scott: A Contradiction.' last two words amended from 'An Explanation' The letter begins: 'My Solicitors who advised me that the paragraph in your last issue connecting my name directly with a slanderous rumour to the effect that a well know dramatic critic had been bribed by a theatrical manager has handed me your letter of <> date. In it you say "I am <> willing to insert any contradiction of the rumours referred to which Mr Clement Scott may wish to address to me.' Scott continues: 'My answer is that the rumour is base unjustified and absolutely false. I should have thought my service of 35 years in a public position would have saved me from such unwarrantable slander but it seems to me that devotion to the drama in these days only increases the spite of the envious hangers on to its skirts'. He offers a reward for assistance in discovering the 'originator of this slander' and 'very formidable and disgraceful conspiracy'. In the final paragraph he criticises Austin Fryer for not having 'the pluck or moral courage' to retract after inadvertently 'uttering the libel'. On letterhead of 15 Woburn Square, W.C. The addressee’s name is unclear. Signed ‘Clement Scott’. Begins ‘If the article on the Gaiety has to be cut - they are cut sometimes on Sundays - please ask them as a special favour not to cut the remarks about the wonderful song “The Bogie man.†I know it is wrong to prophesy but this song will bring fortune to the Burlesque and no one has touched on it as yet.’ He could ‘do “La Cycleâ€â€™ but does not want ‘to interfere with these comic operas unless B permits it’. He continues: ‘You will see from my Gaiety article that I am not ignorant of the effect of music on the profanum vulgus but of course I have no executive power’. The letter is headed with Sayers’ Totnes address. He begins by explaining that the Sphere’s ‘Children’s Supplement’ has been abandoned due to ‘the high cost of paper’. Turning to Sayers’ other letter he thanks him for offering to lend him a copy of Baring Gould’s ‘Strange Survivals’ but that he will obtain his own copy. 150 pages. Abstract as follows: "The vegetation of the Vernon map sheet area is diverse in response to variation in climate and site conditions. The diversity of the plant cover is characterized by vegetation types. The vegetation of the area is characterized by two Regions: the Dry Interior and Interior Wet Belt Regions. Within each region, patterns of zones (climactic climax potential) and subzones (successional patterns) are recognized. A standard reconnaissance vegetation survey was implemented and 290 vegetation plots were located. Computer analysis of the plots resulted in the identification of forty-five vegetation types, representing seral and climax vegetation in the Dry Interior and Interior Wet Belt Regions. For each type the relationships between environmental characteristics and vegetation were assessed. The evaluation of these relationships is important for the application of the vegetation information to resource management. Interpretations of each vegetation type are made for wildlife, forestry and recreation values. Chicago Illinois: University of Chicago 1944. INSCRIBED / SIGNED by the AUTHOR. Very Good condition. Pages are clean and unmarked. Inscribed on the front cover: "With the compliments of Mary Dean Clement." This is the original 1944 Ph. D. dissertation -- NOT print on demand edition or modern reprint. Bound in the original wraps stamped in black. This volume was among several dozen books from Temple Rice Hollcroft's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. The American mathematician Temple Rice Hollcroft 1889 - 1967 received B.S. in 1912 and A.B. in 1914 from Hanover College and then A.M. in 1915 from the University of Kentucky. He received his Ph.D. in 1917 from Cornell University under Virgil Snyder. Hollcroft was a mathematics professor at Wells College from 1918 to 1954 from which he retired as professor emeritus. Hollcroft served for 14 years as Associate Secretary of the American Mathematical Society. In 1932 in Zurich he was an Invited Speaker of the International Congress of Mathematician ICM. His subject was THE GENERAL WEB OF SURFACES AND THE SPACE INVOLUTION DEFINED BY IT

Very good. - William L. Clement's original 3-3/4 inch high by 2-3/4 inch high engraved armorial bookplate. A banner at the top of the image proclaims "In Time" above a winged hourglass. Below the image of flying time is a shield decorated by 3 doves on one side and 3 pennants on the other. The shield is itself framed on each side by a doe climbing up towards the hourglass. "Clements" is engraved under the image. Very faintly yellowed and soiled along the right edge. Near fine. <p>The American businessman William L. Clements 1861-1934 was a collector of historical works. He founded the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. A successful businessman involved in manufacturing and banking Clements was a major donor to the University and served as its regent for 24 years. unknown

London: Seeleys 1828. First Edition. All published of this Anti-Catholic journal. Begun in July 1827 it ceased in 1828. Brown buckram boards with gilt titles to the spine. Volumes I & 2 bound as one. Bookplate of the Law Society to the inside board. Contemporary owner's signature to the half title. Contents to the beginning of volume I. The boards are in excellent condition. The pages of the journals are very clean and tidy with only a touch of foxing or edge wear to them. The contents are a variety of articles and letters aimed at proving the superiority of the the Protestant Faith over Popish Superstition. There is even an article on Prophecies showing the overthrow of the Roman Church in volume II. It seems that the editors didn't prophecies the demise of the journal as it ends at the end of the final issue without any comment. ii 1-380. 1-288 pp. hardcover

Collection of Court Summonses from Lincoln County Maine
Lincoln County ME: Lincoln County Court of Maine 1853. General wear. Letter folds some pieces have separation at the folds. Minor penciling. A collection of seventeen 17 legal summons to the Constables of various towns in Lincoln County Maine. The summons date from April 1828 to July 1853 and were sent by the Clerk of the Court for Lincoln County ME which during these dates were Nathaniel Coffin J. Smith and E. B. Bowman. The majority of the summonses were for jury duty. The summons were preprinted letters in which it stated that Constable of the town was required to inform the town and its citizens that they were required to send a representative to court on the appointed date to serve on a jury. At the base of the form was a section for the town constable to fill in the name of the town resident that would be answering the summoning and certify that they informed said citizen of their duty and sent the summons back to the Clerk. There is often small calculations for reimbursement on these summons for such things as the cost of postage for mailing it back. <br /> There are three court summons in this collection which are not jury duty summons. The first is a warrant for the arrest of Martin Munroe 1783-1867 of Thomaston for the assault and battery of against his wife Eliza Munroe 1785-1865. There is a short note on the back of the summons in which it states that Munroe was found and brought to the court. There are also several calculations done for expenses incurred by the transfer of Munroe such as lodging and food that were to be reimbursed. Unfortunately no information on the outcome of this case was found though a genealogy search revealed that the two stayed married after this event and had two daughters. The second court summons is an order of appearance to Nathaniel Quint and Thomas Sandford both of Topsham ME to appear before a judge regarding a matter of financial debt between the two men. On the back of this summons is written "Quint v. Sandford" and a short note regarding the outcome of the case which was in favor of the plaintiff for $78.76. The last is also an order of summons but for the representative of the town of Thomaston ME which was brought under indictment for their failure to maintain some roads within the town. The case entitled State v. Thomaston would eventually be won by the town of Thomaston. On the back of the summons is a note by Peter Fuller the town's Sheriff that states that they send the Town Clerk Oliver Foles to argue the case. All of the summonses were sent by folded stampless post. The majority of the letters have a number written on the outside. They have been organized chronologically. On a historical note the original boundaries of Lincoln County in Maine covered almost 90% of what is currently the state of Maine and as such as the state's population crew it was carved out into several additionally countries. The names of the exact towns the summons were sent to are: Litchfield Nobleboro Whitefield Thomaston Topsham Dresden Friendship Lewiston Alna Bath Phippsburg Webster Bowdin and Edgecomb. Half-title present.Hardcover, bound in contemporary plain blue paper-covered boards, rubbed and chipped in places, floral shelf label to spine, few sporadic institutional stamps. In fine condition, preserved in the original state, wide-margined, untrimmed. Excellent copy practically unused, still entirely unopened. ~ First French edition. Very rare. OCLC locates only 3 copies worldwide: UCLA; Delaware; Bibliothèque nationale de France. One copy, that in Conservatoire national des arts et métiers, is incomplete, comprising of Vol. 1 only. We located another copy, that in Hagley Museum. All 4 located copies are rebound and trimmed to 26 cm or less, as opposed to the present copy which is in the original size of 29 cm, untrimmed, undoctored and in first binding. ~ The English "An essay on naval tactics, systematical and historical, with explanatory plates, in four parts" first appeared in 1790 and went through 13 editions until 1827, which are held now by 52 institutional libraries worldwide. It was translated into French by Daniel Lescallier (1743-1822 ). ~ John Clerk of Eldin (1728-1812), was a Scottish merchant, naval author, artist, geologist and landowner. He is best remembered for his influential writings on naval tactics in the Age of Sail. He was a prolific, noted etcher and it is believed that the fine plates in this work were made by him. In this work he expounds on the tactic known as "cutting the line". This involved sailing into the enemy's line of ships and attacking the rear ships with the whole force of the fleet. Horatio Nelson used several sentences from Clerk's work in his orders to the British fleet before the Battle of Trafalgar. There is a certain amount of discrepancy regarding the publishing date of the second volume. While several bibliographies, mostly citing each other, tend to date it at 1798, the Bibliothèque nationale de France dates it at 1797. The volume itself, however, is dated "L'An VI" which, following the first volume of 1791, can only be 1796. It is most interesting to note that "Biographie universelle, ancienne et moderne" (Volume 61, 1836) claims that the first French edition appeared in 1797, and that "une seconde édition a paru depuis". 8vo., First English Edition, with an engraved plate (moderately spotted), 2 engraved plans on one plate, and two engraved facsimiles on one plate, rear free endpaper and one rear blank preliminary lightly spotted; attractively bound in nineteenth century half calf, marbled boards, back gilt extra with five raised bands, second compartment with red leather label lettered in gilt, all other compartments ruled and elaborately tooled in gilt to a floral design, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers, corners lightly bruised else a remarkably bright, crisp, clean copy in elegant binding. With the 16pp list of subscribers, which includes virtually every member of the Royal family extended to Prince William of Gloucester. This is the early issue with 'Bookselllers' in the publisher's imprint (see ESTCT110766). The plates depict the Temple tower, plans of the second and third floors and two facsimiles of Marie Antoinette's handwriting. Clery's family had been in the service of the French Royal Family since the time of Louis XIV. Together with his brother, he began his career with the Princesse de Guenenee, governess to the royal children, and became valet-de-chambre to the Duke of Normandy (later the Dauphin) in 1785. From 1789, he acted as valet to King Louis XVI and was permitted by Petion to continue to wait on the Royal Family during their imprisonment in the Temple. After the King's execution, Clery accompanied the Madame Royale (Marie-Therese de Bourbon) on her exile to Vienna where he continued to serve until his death.
