Woodcut coat of arms to the title page decorative woodcut initial to the first text page text in black letter. A very good copy with just a little toning slight separation and minor wear to the left-hand margin where once bound within a larger volume. An act restoring Ireland's ability to export goods directly to the colonies in the Americas and Africa issued in the context of the American Revolutionary War and amending what became known as the Navigation Acts. Restricting the freedoms of Britain's colonies with regard to the import and export of goods the Navigation Acts had been a significant factor in fermenting rebellious discontent in America - requiring all of a colony's imports to be either bought from Britain or resold by British merchants in Britain regardless of the price obtainable elsewhere. The acts were also resented in Ireland and damaged its economy as they permitted the importation of English goods into Ireland tariff-free and simultaneously imposed tariffs on Irish exports travelling in the opposite direction. The present act removing some of these barriers demonstrates the changing nature of British mercantilism as the American Revolution progressed. Very Good Greek, Modern (post 1453) Original wrappers. Large 8vo. (21 x 16 cm). In Greek (Modern). 21 p. First and only edition of this exceedingly rare and one of the earliest church regulations of the Greek Orthodox community of Attalia [Antalya]. Attalia was not a large urban center or major trading hub, but neither was the Greek Community marginal, and it was well integrated into the regional economy. It was different from other areas in Asia Minor due to a combination of factors ranging between demography, geography, local Orthodox leadership, and the city's social milieu. In contrast to the West-coast cities and many villages in Asia Minor with Orthodox majorities, Attalia's population was only about one-third Orthodox. The main area of difference in Antalya was the Community leadership, which was key to the maintenance of cordial relationships between Christians and Muslims, and the secular and ecclesiastical elements of Orthodox leadership in Antalya tended to cooperate for collective benefit. Throughout this period, a local elite managed to control education and other Community institutions, perpetuating an identity that was compatible with the local Ottoman context. In this last period, the Greek Community printed several books and tractates including a brief history of Antalya and this "regulation book" in the Meli Printing House, which was the only printing house of the Greek Community in Antalya. Only one institutional copy is located in OCLC 1030075331 (Suna Kiraç Library of the Koç University).

Octavo. 52pp. Removed from a nonce volume a little trimmed slightly affecting the inscription some offsetting on the title page else very good. Inscribed: "Josiah Quincy Jr. Esq. with the respects of the author." Name of Charles F. Adams written on the title page in a non-authorial hand possibly Quincy's. Quincy a member of the Whig Party was the second of three Josiah Quincys to serve as Mayor of Boston; Charles Francis Adams Sr. the son of John Quincy Adams was a lawyer and a Whig and then later a member of the Free Soil Party and finally a Republican who studied law with Daniel Webster served in the House of Representatives but resigned to become Lincoln's Ambassador to Great Britain from 1861 to 1868 where he along with his son Henry Adams who acted as his secretary was instrumental in maintaining British neutrality and preventing British diplomatic recognition of the Confederacy during the American Civil War. AMERICANA. MANUSCRIPT Tax Records for the Town of Quincy Massachusetts for the year 1813
Quincy MA 1813. Very Good. Manuscript. 20 pp. 165 x 200 mm. Stitched as issued. At some point folded to pocket size and thus retains large fold down middle of pages small chips and tears along edges some age-toning a few pages very browned. An ownership inscription on the front leaf in pencil reads "Elijah Baxter Nichols." Highly interesting Tax Roll for the town of Quincy whose residents at that time included retired President John Adams; his son and future president John Quincy Adams; and other members of their family. These individuals are named herein and their property taxes enumerated. As is well known the majority of the Adams Family Papers are preserved in the Massachusetts Historical Society Boston. It would seem to us that the present manuscript would make a useful addition to this august institution.<br /> <br /> Names of the property owners are usefully arranged alphabetically; not surprisingly John Adams' name appears first. The property owner's name is followed by six columns: poll tax real estate tax property estate tax state tax polls state real estate tax and state property estate tax the amount totaled for each individual at the end of their line. An "x" at the beginning of a name indicates whether or not the individual has paid the full tax amount and these have a note at the end of their line stating how much has been paid thus far. The number of property owners who had not yet paid are few in number. <br /> <br /> After his loss to Jefferson in the presidential election of 1800 John Adams retired to the Peacefield the family home in Quincy. With 40 acres of farmland and orchards Adams spent most of his retirement farming generally staying quiet on public matters although he became much more vocal after Jefferson's retirement in 1809. His son John Quincy Adams lived at Peacefield as well in between terms at the Senate and as President with his wife Louisa Catherine Adams and their son Charles Francis Adams. John Adams's daughter Abigail "Nabby" returned to the farm after her failed marriage to Representative William Stephens Smith and died of breast cancer shortly before these taxes were recorded in 1813. Presumably the entry for John Adams documents taxes collected on Peacefield.<br /> <br /> Also included are sections of taxes due for non-residents who owned property in Quincy but resided in Boston Braintree Randolph Milton Dorchester and Stoughton. Columns here indicate number of acres the value of the property county and town tax and state tax. Curiously only the county town and state taxes are recorded for Braintree and Randolph.<br /> <br /> The text on the front leaf reads as follows: "This tax bill is to be collected and paid to the Several treasurers as follows. Viz.: To the State treasurer -- 356.67 / To the town treasurer -- 3111.43 / To the County Treasurer -- 129.00 / $3598.00 / AD 1813." The bill number is given on p. 20 as "360093" along with the names of the Assessors of the town of Quincy Noah Curtis and Josiah Bass. unknown

Near Fine with minor soiling light toning and old folds. <p>One of the earliest printed works commissioned by Chinese immigrants in what is now the United States. While the first Chinese explorers reached Hawaii in the late 18th century Chinese immigration to any part of the United States began in appreciable numbers about the time of the California Gold Rush. While much writing about Chinese immigrants survives from the mid-19th century almost nothing survives by any of those immigrants. This invitation represents a rare and very early instance of such printed matter. <p>The Great Chinese Merchants' Ball of 1856 was thrown in celebration of the marriage of Liholiho Kamehameha IV to Emma Naea Rooke. Following a series of celebrations including balls thrown by the American Club and German Club roughly three dozen Cantonese in Honolulu felt that it was necessary for them if they were to succeed in the mercantile trade during the reign of the king to have a personal relationship with him. They decided to demonstrate the depth of their loyalty to the throne by presenting an extravaganza that would surpass those given by the Americans and Germans. <p>A respected Cantonese merchant Chun Afong who was proficient in the Hawaiian and English languages and conversant with Western manners was persuaded to head the committee of arrangements for a ball. Afong would eventually become the first Chinese millionaire in Hawaii. <p>The Chinese Merchants' Ball was one of the most Hawaiian elaborate affairs of the 1850s. It was a key event in Honolulu's social history where for the first time "East" and "West" met as social equals greatly solidifying the Chinese community's position in Honolulu. <p>A rare survival of an invitation to an important social event in Hawaiian cultural history as well as an unusually early document printed by Chinese immigrants in America. A Call to a Conference on Equal Rights for Negroes in the Arts Sciences & Professions with three additional related documents
New York: New York Council of the Arts Sciences and Professions 1951. Three items stapled together at top left corner together with a separate leaflet totaling seven pages. Minor edge wear one item with a short closed tear. Overall very good. A group of four printed items pertaining to an effort by New York arts professionals to encourage equality for African American arts professionals in midcentury United States where the lower half of the country was still mired in Jim Crow laws. The most notable of these items is a four-panel program detailing the conference with introductory text describing the ways in which racism limits the opportunities of Black artists and scientists and the failure to put recent anti-racist court decisions into actual practice. The program for the conference lists such themes as the effects of Jim Crow policy on the arts and representation of Black subjects the deleterious effects of racism on health and welfare and how cultural standards are lowered and violence encouraged by discrimination. According to the speakers list on the fourth page of the program participants in the conference included Oliver Harrington Jacob Lawrence Julian Mayfield Paul Robeson and other artists educators scientists and musicians.<br /> <br /> Attached to this program are two handbills; one is an invitation to an opening night event featuring new works of ballet chorus calypso and drama the night before the conference. This performance took place at the Pythian on November 9 1951. The other handbill announces the program for the Annual Convention of the New York Council which appears to have been a more general event on the day after the conference on equal rights. The text on this handbill notes the suppression of free speech under McCarthyism. The last item is an 8.5-x-14-inch handbill probably a press release of sorts announcing the conference also titled "A Call to a Conference on Equal Rights for Negroes in the Arts Sciences and Professions." The language of this handbill is the same as the second page of the four-page brochure but is dated a month before the conference in October 1951.<br /> <br /> Some of the language in the program introduction and handbill merit quoting here: "In the sciences and professions the majority of Negroes are deprived of equal educational opportunities by segregation and quota systems denied employment in the professions restricted to the most menial occupations confined to ghetto areas for their private practice and thus prevented from making a full contribution to the welfare of the nation. Blacklisting character assassination political inquisitions and other forms of censorship against white artists scientists and professionals cannot be ended - so long as discrimination against Negroes and other minority group members is maintained For those who violate the Constitution and foster a policy of discrimination against Negroes are the very same persons who are responsible for censorship blacklisting and the debasement of our science and culture. It is they who tolerate and promote the campaigns of violence and brutality against the Negro people as exhibited in Cicero in the bombing of the home of a world-renowned Negro chemist in the refusal of platforms to the most outstanding American Negro artists in the ‘legal lynchings’ of many young men guilty of nothing more than being Negroes. American culture Cannot live in the face of such terror against a large segment of our people. Standards of truth and humanism cannot be maintained in our cultural media so long as the truth of the Negro people's lives is denied expression. Nor can there be decent standards for white professionals in many fields so long as a reservoir of Negro unemployed is used to depress salaries and rates."<br /> <br /> Surprisingly OCLC is silent on any material from the conference though we doubt this group of ephemera is a unique survival. Collection of Notes and Documents Retained by Sheila June Getoff Documenting the Activities of the San Fernando Valley Branch of the NAACP
Pacoima CA 1970. Assortment of manuscript notes typescripts mimeographs flyers and ephemera totaling approximately 80pp. Overall minor wear with some chipping to the largest flyer. Overall very good. An informative file of notes and documents relating the activities of the San Fernando Branch of the NAACP which covered the area immediately north of Los Angeles. The material was retained by and in some cases authored by Sheila June Getoff born 1922 who served as the branch's recording secretary. The documents include manuscript notes of minutes of branch meetings totaling about twenty-five manuscript pages and almost certainly in Getoff's hand; a fact sheet for a proposed After Hours Adolescent Free Clinic; meeting sign-in sheets and board member lists; membership memoranda; and a completed membership mailer. According to the notes one meeting on May 20 featured "an intense heated and somewhat controversial discussion of.the recent police activity in the Park and the general consensus that there was a political motive in bringing such a large number of police."<br /> <br /> Other interesting documents and general activist papers include "Guidelines for a Youth Talk-In Center Rap Session and Socializing;" a petition to drop charges against protestors at Valley State College in 1969; a flyer for "Resistance Inside and Outside of Prison" with the Boston Draft Resistance Group in Pacoima in February 1969; a flyer for the Coalition Against Repression headed "Repression Won't Work if We Won't Let It;" a later grape boycott flier calling for a boycott of Safeway; and three socialist newspapers. One newsletter-style publication includes an essay titled "The Negro After Watts" which would have special resonance to members of the NAACP around Los Angeles. NAACP activities in the western part of the United States are especially scarce and the present archive offers a great opportunity for researching the group's activities at the end of the 1960s. unknown

Framed Commemorative Display of an Uncut Quarter Sheet of Booker T. Washington Stamps Presented to Booker T. Washington III by an Important African-American Postal Trade Union
New York: April 8 1940. Very good. Framed display 19 x 13 inches comprised of an uncut sheet of stamps above calligraphic text. Minor wear and some toning. A handsome and unique commemorative display piece honoring famed educator Booker T. Washington given to his grandson as a keepsake by an important African-American trade union. The display is comprised of an uncut quarter sheet of seventy 1940 Booker T. Washington ten-cent stamps inscribed at the bottom right by New York Postmaster Albert Goldman on April 8 1940 the stamp's second day of issue which was then mounted above a calligraphic inscription at bottom reading as follows: "Booker T. Washington Commemorative Stamps -- Famous American Series Presented to Booker T. Washington 3d Grandson of the educator by The National Alliance of Postal Employees On the occasion of the ceremonies honoring that great educator Booker T. Washington and incident to placing this commemorative stamp on sale for the first time at New York New York April 8 1940."<br /> <br /> The ten-cent stamp features a distinctive portrait of Booker T. Washington and was the first stamp issued in the United States to feature an African American subject. "On April 7 1940 the Post Office Department POD issued a stamp honoring African-American educator Booker T. Washington 1856-1915 as part of its Famous Americans Series. The nation's first stamp to honor an African-American it holds a unique place in American history. In 1938 President Franklin D. Roosevelt responding to numerous petitions from African-American supporters recognized the timeliness of such a stamp and directed that Washington be considered for this important stamp series. Major Robert Richard Wright Sr. among others had aggressively lobbied for a stamp honoring Booker T. Washington since Roosevelt took office in 1933. When Wright read the POD's decision to feature Washington on the 10¢ stamp announced in 1939 he reflected with gratification the stamp 'comes pretty nearly within the limit of seventy-five years of Negro Emancipation.' He objected however to its high denomination preferring to see it as one of the lower-priced more affordable denominations used by the public daily. He worried that the cost of the 10¢ stamp 'will not induce a large first day sale.among colored people.' Echoing Wright's concerns The Washington Tribune recommended that its readers buy the stamp for special delivery and parcel post mailings. Numerous institutions all important in the lives of African-Americans clamored to host the stamp's first day of issue ceremony. The POD selected Tuskegee Institute founded by Washington in 1881 for this watershed ceremony's location. Guests gathered in the Institute Chapel. Postmaster General James A. Farley attended the ceremony and afterwards joined by the Tuskegee Club of Montgomery Alabama placed a wreath at Washington's tomb. Enthusiasm for the Booker T. Washington stamp and its momentous significance for the African-American population prompted two official second day of issue ceremonies events unprecedented in philatelic history -- one in New York City and the other in Philadelphia." - Smithsonian National Postal Museum.<br /> <br /> The entity presenting the present display the National Alliance of Postal Employees was an important African American trade union and the perfect organization to honor Booker T. Washington with such a philatelic display. According to the Department of Labor's 1926 Handbook of American Trade-Unions: "In 1913 the National Alliance of Postal Employees was organized by the colored postal men. It is composed chiefly of men in the Railway Mail Service but its jurisdiction is not restricted to any one branch its aim being one organization for all colored workers in the Postal Service." The government's handbook did not reveal the reason the NAPE had to be founded at all: African American workers were not allowed to join the all-white Railway Mail Association in 1913. So African American postal employees started their own union founded in Chattanooga Tennessee on October 6 1913. By 1923 the union admitted all African Americans in the U.S. Postal Service and numbered about 1700 members two years later. The union would continue to grow and expand its representation outside the postal service eventually changing its name to the National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees under which it still operates today.<br /> <br /> A wonderful display item honoring one of the most important African-American figures in American history and celebrating the first appearance of an African American figure on a United States postage stamp. An extraordinary pair of large-format lovingly-composed scrapbooks produced to document the history and achievements of the Monroe-Grambling chapter of the Links Incorporated a local Louisiana chapter of a notable national service organization comprised of and dedicated to supporting African-American women. According to a printed notice on the first page of the earlier scrapbook: "This book is intended to trace the history of the Monroe-Grambling Chapter of the Links Incorporated and to highlight a selected number of achievements." <br /> <br /> The compilers of the scrapbooks document the group's activities through original photographs ephemeral items such as programs certificates and documents and a legion of newspaper clippings most of which also picture members of the group. The contents are then artfully arranged with scrapbook elements such as ribbon construction paper frames manuscript headings and so forth. The ephemera in both scrapbooks include officer lists and event programs for chapter meetings banquets youth service events and so forth. The scrapbooks memorialize highlights of the Monroe chapter from its founding in 1973 through 1991. The scrapbooks memorialize the chapter's first meeting initiations from various years the chapter presidents service and volunteer events youth pageants arts festivals workshops namely the Beautillion Workshop over different years and more. The great majority of these moments are captured in original photographs or photographically-illustrated newspaper clippings.<br /> <br /> In general the Links Incorporated's volunteer efforts center around youth global awareness and the arts for which the chapter was recognized by numerous other organizations evidenced by the run of certificates near the end of the first scrapbook received from Grambling State University some of the school's Greek chapters the Monroe Mayor's Commission on the Needs of Women and Women in the Mainstream the Girl Scouts Carver Elementary School and more. The first scrapbook ends with a long run of pages celebrating "Individual Achievement" by various member as well as a few pages of "Connecting Links" to prominent local citizens including Grambling State's legendary head football coach Eddie Robinson.<br /> <br /> The second scrapbook picks up where the first leaves off documenting chapter activities for 1990 and 1991 but is much shorter. This second scrapbook includes material similar to the first but also a page dedicated to Founder's Day nine original photographs and the "Cultural Programme" from a chapter event titled "A Tribute to the Black Woman" and two programs for events during Black Heritage Month including one honoring the aforementioned Coach Eddie Robinson "the 'winningest' coach in football history".<br /> <br /> According to the organization's website: "The Links Incorporated is an international not-for-profit corporation established in 1946. The membership consists of more than 17000 professional women of African descent in 299 chapters located in 41 states the District of Columbia the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and the United Kingdom. It is one of the nation's oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of extraordinary women who are committed to enriching sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. The outstanding programming of The Links Incorporated has five facets which include Services to Youth The Arts National Trends and Services International Trends and Services and Health and Human Services. The programs are implemented through strategies such as public information and education economic development and public policy campaigns." These five facets are all represented in the present scrapbooks.<br /> <br /> A fabulous pair of substantial and informative scrapbooks documenting almost two decades of activities and achievements of a vital Louisiana chapter of a highly-regarded African-American women's organization. Following swiftly on the heels of the Suwanee Convention of Southern Bishops in late July 1883 a large gathering of clergy and laymen met in New York City to organize the work of the Afro-American clergy of the Protestant Episcopal Church. It was a historic moment and "of the forty-two Colored Clergy of the United States only four had responded to the call in the negative and three others had failed to respond." A Committee was formed chaired by Alexander Crummell to draft a statement to the Church in America. Here the Committee calls attention "to the moral disasters which have come to our race through slavery – how family life parental authority and marriage integrity have been broken down by servitude" and issues a call for "an extraordinary effort for the erection of Churches throughout the South" especially in the large urban centers. In addition to the proceedings the work includes a "Sermon on Church Work by the Colored People" by Rev. Thomas A. Starkey the Bishop of Northern New Jersey a brief Finance Committee Report and concludes with the "Regulations of the Women's Auxiliary of the Convocation of the Colored Clergy." The latter is comprised of five articles and an addendum plus a listing of twenty women belonging to the New York and Newark branches of the organization. Albany: NAACP Northeastern Region 1965. Very good plus. Four-color broadside 14 x 11 inches. Soft central horizontal crease minor adhesive remnants on verso from former mounting. A striking four-color broadside produced by the New York State Conference of the NAACP in Albany to encourage African American men and women to exercise their voting rights in the mid-to-late 1960s likely in the aftermath of the Civil Rights Act of 1965. The poster is illustrated with three pairs of African American men and women - an elderly couple a middle-aged couple and a pair of young people to highlight the importance of voting for the future of the African American people. The bottom margin of the broadside carries a purple stamp from the NAACP's Northeastern Region New York State Conference in Albany. The trade union printer's slug at bottom right indicates the poster was printed in Washington D.C. so the NAACP may have used these posters in numerous locations. An informative pair of promotional pamphlets issued by the Associated Publishers a notable African-American publishing house during the early-20th century. Both works provide a valuable peek into the marketing of books and images to the African-American community in the early-20th century. The first work Publications of the Associated Publishers Inc. is a catalogue of currently available publications listed by title author and other specific details with descriptions of each book at varying lengths. The authors represented here include Carter Woodson numerous titles here Kelly Miller Robert Kerlin Booker T. Washington Paul Laurence Dunbar and others. Three works including the Washington and Dunbar are given full-page illustrated treatment here. The penultimate page includes a listing of all the "Works Produced by the Association since its Organization September 9 1915." Our proposed date for the work comes from the fact that the first two books listed -- the only two books listed on the first page -- were published in 1926. OCLC lists different versions of Associated Publishers catalogues issued between 1924 and the 1960s but we do not locate the present version.<br /> <br /> The second work present here advertises collections of portraits of notable African-American leaders authors musicians artists and more touted as "The history of the Negro race told with the pictures of its great men and women." The front cover of the brochure is illustrated with portraits of Frederick Douglass Booker T. Washington Paul Laurence Dunbar and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. The main thrust of the work includes a dozen themed groups of pictures offered under titles such as "Negroes Internationally Known" "Negro Women of Distinction" "Negroes of Genius" and so forth. In total the brochure offers portraits of over 150 prominent African American figures. Also available are larger-format photographs measuring 11 x 14 inches featuring "Eleven Distinguished Negroes." The brochure ends with an order form. Dating this brochure is challenging because of the rarity of both the brochure and the photographs it advertises. OCLC lists just one record under this title comprising a hundred pictures dated 1927. Harlem bookseller Lewis Michaux repurposed the present brochure in the 1950s perhaps to advertise the remainder of photographs not originally sold by Associated.<br /> <br /> Associated Publishers was a publishing company founded in 1921 by Carter G. Woodson 1875-1950 a "Father of Black History." Woodson was an African American historian and journalist and a founder of both the Association for the Study of African American Life and History ASALH and The Journal of Negro History. The son of formerly enslaved parents Woodson earned a Ph.D. in history at Harvard only the second African American to do so after W.E.B. DuBois. Confronted with the realization that major publishing companies showed no interest in producing works related to African American life and history Woodson organized The Associated Publishers as an outlet for publishing papers books translations and other materials related to African American culture. Publisher's blue cloth-covered boards titled in white on spine and front cover; 89-311pp; frontispiece portrait and 15 unnumbered leaves of photographic plates halftones. A complete clean and sound copy with moderate external wear; board corners and spine ends rubbed; spine slightly darkened with spine lettering dull some flaking to lettering on front cover. Internally quite good with all plates present text clean tight and unmarked. A complete sound Good or better copy.<br /> <br /> Micheaux's uncommon first book and the source for his 1919 silent film "The Homesteader" an autobiographical novel based on his own years spent homesteading in rural South Dakota. The novel's main character "Oscar Devereaux" faces all the hardships of any early 20th-century sod-buster while also dealling with the isolation and prejudice that come with being the sole African-American homesteader in his section. Drawing on his own experience Micheaux addresses these difficulties candidly including a frank discursion on the temptations of miscegenation to which Micheaux is clearly opposed: "I had learned that throughout these Dakotas and Nebraska that other lone colored men who had drifted from the haunts and homes of the race.and had with time and natural development through the increase in the valuation of their homesteads or other lands they had acquired grown prosperous and had finally with hardly an exception married into the white race. These people had no doubt been honorable and had intended to remain loyal to their race but long hard years lean crops and the long lonesome days had changed them." In the course of the novel Devereaux's marriage to a Black minister's daughter from Chicago dissolves unhappily; the homestead fails a victim of drought flood and harsh winter - all echoing Micheaux's own unhappy tenure on the prairie. <br /> <br /> Having failed as a farmer Micheaux would go on to a storied career as an author and filmmaker. By the time of his death in 1951 he had published seven novels and directed or produced more than forty films all featuring primarily or entirely Black casts. But because Micheaux was never in the mainstream of African-American intellectual life and had very little intersection with the writers and artists of the Harlem Renaissance his novels were long unappreciated and practically forgotten until The Conquest his first novel was brought back into print in 1994 by the University of Nebraska Press. But in the intervening 80 years of obscurity most original copies had disappeared making the first printing quite elusive. BLOCKSON 2640. Missed by Hanna. The Woodbine Press unknown

An offprint of an article printed in The Crisis discussing the "old phrases" "name-calling" "angled 'news' stories" "half-truths" and "whole lies" being printed by the Communist Party in their mouthpiece The Daily Worker. The object of this public attack according to the NAACP is to "discredit NAACP leadership" "tear the Association apart" and "take it over." This public fight between the NAACP and the Communist Party came in the midst of the Red Menace panic and just two years after the initial hearings by the House Un-American Activities Committee. Previously the two organizations had occasionally though somewhat uneasily worked together most notably in the defense of the Scottsboro Boys in Alabama in the 1930s. Eventually the two groups split along ideological lines as the NAACP attempted to work within the democratic system to ensure reforms and the Communists were committed to an all-out revolution of the American form of government.<br /> <br /> OCLC records just three institutional copies at UC-Davis Howard and Northwestern. Laid in is a piece of juvenalia dated "1-8-64" a four-page working essay on Charles Dickens presumably written by a young Danny Bakewell at 17 or 18 years of age.<br /> <br /> The archive of Bakewell's Brotherhood Crusade business materials contain over 100 pages of business documents from 1983 to 1985 including drafts of Bakewell's biography and resume Brotherhood Crusade press announcements various detailed senior leadership job descriptions a Brotherhood Crusade senior leadership flowchart and multiple Organization of Health and Management Services OHMS Session statements who apparently were utilized for consultation printing and editing job descriptions and offerings Bakewell's aforementioned bio and resume and various other editing and printing needs for Brotherhood Crusade's senior leadership. The archive includes an abundance of handwritten material as well as ribbon typescript copy and carbon typescript copy documents as well as Xerographically duplicated documents nearly all heavily annotated all in a generic manilla folder labeled "Bakewell Danny J. / c/o Brotherhood Crusade / 200 E. Slauson / Los Angeles CA 90011."<br /> <br /> The Brotherhood Crusade folder a two-color bi-fold with two interior pockets circa 1985 contains: a Brotherhood Crusade mission book. "The Brotherhood Crusade Honors Louis Gossett Jr." book 1984. Five fact sheets. An "I heart Give To The Brotherhood Crusade" bumper sticker. Four "I Believe In Brotherhood" stickers. A "You Support Your Total Community" poster. A "Your Contribution Makes A Difference" poster. And two copies of a flyer for a "Benefit Show and Dance for Babalosha Akin" held at the Omowale Malcom X Cultural Center."<br /> <br /> An intrepid civil rights activist and entrepreneur Danny Bakewell owner of The Bakewell Company the largest minority-owned development firm on the West Coast which includes among its holdings the legendary Black newspaper the Los Angeles Sentinel is the co-founder of the National Black United Fund and served as President for The Brotherhood Crusade for over 30 years retiring in 2005. Since 2009 Bakewell has served as Chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association NNPA and for 19 years has hosted the biggest family friendly annual food and music festival on the West Coast Crensaw's "Taste of Soul" which began in 2006.<br /> <br /> In 1968 partly in response to the 1965 Watts riots Walter Bremond and other members of the Los Angeles Black Congress established the Brotherhood Crusade a grassroots non-profit to serve as a framework for charitable fundraising from within the community focusing on self-help empowerment and social change. In 1973 Bakewell was appointed President and CEO and the Brotherhood Crusade launched the Black United Fund a self-help economic empowerment entity which received much of it's original funding through voluntary payroll deductions. Under Bakewell's leadership The Brotherhood Crusade became one of the premiere institutions of its kind in the country which has since distributed more than $40 million in the South Los Angeles community and provides human and social services to more than 100000 South Los Angeles residents annually. <br /> <br /> Documents 8.5 x 5.5 inches to 8.5 x 14 inches. New York City: George Fenmore Associates 1973. Sixteen page booklet measuring 9 x 12 inches. Some wrinkling some marginal damage overall excellent. The Negro Ensemble Company was opened in 1967 by actor and playwright Douglas Turner Ward actor and producer Robert Hooks and producer Gerald Krone with a grant from the Ford Foundation. It provided free theater training—both in acting and in behind-the-scenes work—to Black people in New York City and put on plays relevant to the community. Notable alumni of the NEC include Angela Bassett Samuel L. Jackson and Giancarlo Esposito among numerous others.<br /> <br /> Offered here is a booklet about the NEC’s production of Joseph A. Walker’s The River Niger which opened in 1972 in the small off-off-Broadway St. Marks Playhouse theater. The play was so popular that it played for weeks longer than planned at St. Marks and then opened on Broadway in 1973. Walker won a Tony for Best Play for The River Niger the first African-American to do so. The booklet includes photographs of the play and an article about it from Ebony magazine alongside photographs from the group’s many other productions. Established in 1971 and still operational as of 2025 the ‘M’ Ensemble is Florida’s longest-running African American theater company. Atlanta Georgia: Commission on Interracial Cooperation 1932. Four page booklet measuring 6 x 9 inches. Some staining and slight wear overall near fine. A 1932 booklet summarizing the results of the Southern Commission on the Study of Lynching’s findings about the crime published by the Commission on Interracial Cooperation CIC. Formed in 1919 the Atlanta-based CIC involved white and African-American leaders and worked to reduce racial tensions in a way tailored to each Southern region in which it had a chapter.1 In the 1930s due to the Great Depression the CIC’s focus shifted from expensive community work to research and education including forming the Southern Commission on the Study of Lynching. The study was headed by sociologist Arthur F. Raper who would publish The Tragedy of Lynching 1933 based on these findings. It shows Sudan and West Africa, Atlas Ocean shores, Sahra Desert, and other parts of Africa. Scale: 1:15.000.000. A very detailed and attractive map. Slightly fading. Otherwise a very good copy. Dated Hegira: 1310 = [Gregorian 1894]. Taken from his attractive atlas titled "Yeni cografya atlasi. [i.e. New Geographical Atlas]". The cartographer, Ali Seref, or Hafiz Ali Seref (or Esref) Pasha (1840-1907) was an Ottoman soldier and mapmaker who was schooled in Paris as a cartographer around 1862. While in Paris he published his first atlas with 22 maps, called the Yeni atlas. Upon his return to Istanbul, he became the chief cartographer at the Matbaa-i Amire Printing Press in Beyazit. Ali Seref Pasa or Hafix Ali Esref. He was a soldier, who was schooled in Paris as a cartographer around 1862. Already in Paris he published his first atlas with 22 maps, called 'Yeni atlas'. Upon his return to Istanbul he became a chief cartographer at the Maatbaa-i amire Printing Press in Beyazit, which was the successor of the Muteferrika press from 1727. Among others he translated the large Kiepert map of Anatolia to Ottoman. He died in 1907, leaving his large project of a gigantic map of Anatolia in 100 sheets unfinished. Ali's name is often misunderstood or even listed as two different people: Ali Seref Pasa and Hafiz Ali Esref. Until the surname law adopted on June 21, 1934, Turks did not have surnames. They were born with one first name and were until the adulthood described only as sons or daughters of their parent's names. Later they were given titles such as Effendi (Sir), Bey (Chief) or Hanim (Madam) for higher classes, or they were given names according to their work or class. The names were not inherited by children until 1934, when the surname law was enforced. The map maker Ali received names Seref, the honourable, and Pasa, the dignitary. He was also known as Hafiz, the memorizer of Qur'an and Esref, Proud. So Ali Seref Pasa would have a meaning 'Honourable Dignitary Ali, and Hafiz Ali Esref, Memorizer of Qur'an, Proud Ali. Daruttibaa - Matbaa-I Amire Printing Press: The first press in the Muslim world, called Daruttibaa, was founded in Istanbul by Ibrahim Muteferrika in 1727, with a permission of Sultan Ahmeet III. It was located in Muteferrika's house. The first book was published in 1729 and until 1742 sixteen other works followed. After Muteferrika's death, the press was supressed for printing, as printed books were considered dangerous. In 1796 the press was purchased by the government and moved to Uskudar in Istanbul, and in 1831 finally to Beyazit, where it was renamed to Matbaa-i Amire in 1866. The press was closed in 1901 and was reopened in 1908 under the name 'Âmire' In 1927 the name changed to State Printing House. The press still exists and is known for publishing school and educational books. Extremely rare. Not in OCLC.; Not in TBMM Map Collection.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED FROM F.S. LYON OF DEMOPOLIS TO GOVERNOR A.B. MOORE 4 MARCH 1861 RECOMMENDING THE APPOINTMENT OF DR. WILLIAM C. ASHE AS SURGEON TO THE REGIMENT WITH RANK OF MAJOR

Very Good.<br /> <br /> Francis Strother Lyon 1800-1882 an Alabama lawyer and Democratic politician wrote this letter to Governor Moore. Lyon had been a Whig Congressman in the 1830s and having chaired the State Delegation to the 1860 Democratic Presidential Convention remained a power in Alabama public affairs. Dr. William Cincinnatus Ashe 1815-1867 a Demopolis physician received his appointment as Surgeon to the 11th Alabama Infantry on July 4 1861 and acted in that capacity until he was relieved on June 21 1862. On August 1 1862 he became Surgeon-- and then Surgeon-in-Charge-- of the 1st Alabama Hospital in Richmond; and then Surgeon in Charge of Fort Morgan Hospital in Mobile Bay.<br /> Lyon reminds Moore that "The Act of Congress for the establishment and organization of a general staff for the Army of the Confederate state authorizes the appointment of four surgeons with the rank of Major. You will remember that the friends of Dr. William C. Ashe of this place recommended him to you for the appointment of Surgeon to the Regiment to be raised under the Ordinance of this State. Now I am not informed as to your final determination. His friends feel a good deal of anxiety for his appointment as surgeon in the regular army either by the President or yourself."<br /> "In this part of the State we have not been clamorous for office- but we have been ardent and active in support of the cause of the South and you will concur with me in opinion that no portion of the State has been more unanimous in sustaining the measures which now promise so well to protect us against further inroads upon our rights on the part of the North. They attest to Strudwick's "good family" fine education "irreproachable moral character." Moreover at six feet tall and 170 pounds he is "the best horseman in Alabama." Byard urging the appointment of Colonel George B. Haydon "for Commander of the 3d Division of Alabama Troops." A February 12 letter from Judge William M. Brooks seeks for Jno. Loomis of Coosa "the Post of Captain in the Regular Army. He was a gallant soldier in the Mexican War." The Judge adds a "P.S. It's delightful to have patronage. You enjoy it I know."<br /> Similar letters seek appointment as officers and physicians attached to particular units. One applicant writes "I have been looking very anxiously for a reply but as I supposed you were other-wise engaged; and as I am quite anxious to know the result of such Application I now trouble you for yours." A scarce promotional for the city of Mobile as a port emphasizing transportation commerce and industry and the centrality of its location to various local ports of call.  The work includes distance tables from various American cities to Mobile’s “Gulf Ports.â€Â  An epilogue authored by the Commercial Club of Mobile and dated January 1891 indicates the motivation behind the pamphlet: “Mobile’s first and greatest importance must be due to the absolute necessity for a commercial metropolis on the Gulf.â€Â  The “geometrical proof†promised in the title is illustrated on the rear wrapper printed with a map of the southeastern United States and the Caribbean triangulating Mobile as the center of commerce.  A bit over a dozen copies in OCLC. An exceptional archive of 86 original silver print photographs chronicling the transformation of Anchorage Alaska Territory from the village of Ship Creek and the construction of the Seward-Anchorage railroad line by the Alaska Engineering Commission AEC. These striking images capture steamships landing dynamiting of obstructions camp construction unloading of railroad car trucks from Panama and railroad lines under construction with many featuring the sweeping Alaskan vistas in the background.

Hunt ca. 1916-1917. 4to. 86 silver print photographs sized 6.25 x 8.25 in. nearly all w/ photographer’s imprint w/in negative at lower fore-edge as well as caption negative number and AEC some w/ occasional pencil annotations on verso all preserved in mylar sleeves occasional creasing at corners a couple w/ slight loss at corners in the small blank margin. Recent 3-ring clamshell binder an excellent set of photos with all retaining bright strong contrast. This outstanding photo archive provides not only some of the earliest photographs of Anchorage Alaska Territory but also this immense railroad project first authorized by the US Congress in 1912. The few existing privately-run railroads operating in Alaska at the time including the Alaska Northern Railway and the Tanana Valley Railroad primarily fulfilled the needs of the mining companies carrying resources to sea ports and very little allowance was made for passenger traffic and it was impossible to travel by rail from Ship’s Creek at the Cook Inlet north to Fairbanks. Through an April 1915 executive order President Wilson directed that the newly created Alaska Engineering Commission construct a railroad along the surveyed “Western Route†from Seward or Portage Bay along the Turnagain & Knik Arms of Cook Inlet North through the Suitna Valley and then follow the Nenana River until it joined the Tanana with the intent it would connect eventually to Fairbanks. Employing discarded surplus railroad equipment from the Panama Canal Railroad project and under the direction of engineer Mears who had worked on both the Panama Canal and Great Northern Railroads the tiny tent city of Ship’s Creek swelled to 5500 people within two years and was officially labeled by the Post Office as “Anchorage.†Photos included here reveal the barren original landscape of Ship’s Creek with one of the photos showing the steam launches “Alaska†& “Seagull†who carried cargo and passengers from ships offshore. In addition there are views of the construction of the immense AEC Railway machine shop by Sept. 1916 as well as the newly completed first Railroad Depot in Anchorage with the progression of buildings erected beyond. These early views of the fast developing project portray the Commissary Hospital Bunkhouses finished machine shop interiors of the powder house for blasting along with a view of the AEC’s photo studio and the completed electrical power house. Early street views of the nascent city are quite scarce and one of particular interest shows Fourth Ave. looking East with newly built stores and homes built along both sides of the roadway stretching into the distance. Brutal working conditions continually interfered with the pace of the project with one of the images showing the AEC’s “Electric Thawing Machine†on a sled whie others depict piles of snow work camps in snow and even sternwheeler and docks trapped in an ice flow in March 1917. A couple of the photographs feature the sternwheeler SS Omineca underway which had been originally constructed in 1909 for the Grand Trunk Railway running the Skeena River from 1909-1912 and powered by the original SS Caledonia’s engines. By the end of 1916 60 miles of track had been laid 100 miles were graded and right-of-way cleared for 230 miles with photos in this archive showing AEC Construction camps at various mile markers blasting activity and track laying. At the same time they rehabilitated the bankrupt Alaska Northern Railroad tracks and by Oct. 24 1917 the first AEC Railway train reached the Chickaloon coal mines 74 miles North of Anchorage. The railroad would actually not be finished until 1923 when the Tanana River Bridge was completed and last 57 miles of track to Fairbank converted to standard gauge. Photos also show the Anchorage Baseball Field which featured games for the Cook Inlet Baseball League composed at the time of Matanuska Anchorage and Turnagain Arm teams. There’s also a very fine series of the Decoration Day parade held May 30 1917 depicting many of the main streets and businesses in the background. In addition several photographs show the ocean docks completed which allowed ships to directly dock at Anchorage rather than lightering passengers and cargo to shore prior to 1917. Hunt 1866-1917 originally worked as a California optician before trekking to Valdez Alaska as a gold rush prospector but quickly established himself as a photographer opening his studio and documenting Valdez and development of the region. He would bring his wife and children to Alaska by 1907. He later secured work as one of the AEC’s official photographers shooting some of the early survey work by 1914 and through the project until suffering a heart attack Oct. 14 1917 in Seward AK. Hunt’s son A.O. Hunt also worked as an assistant photographer for the AEC. A few of these images appear as negatives in the Alaska State Library Historical Collections with a couple shown in their Digital Archives and some appear in the Alaska Engineering Commission archive at the U of W Collect. No. PH0495 but the bulk of that collection features photographs by James McPherson H.G. Kaiser and A.J. Johnson who were the other official photographers on the project; See: Phinney S. Album amicorum of a Miss van Boetzelaer .
Heerenveen 1831. Oblong 4to. Contemporary gold- and blind-tooled brown morocco each board richly decorated with frames and an oblong lozenge-shaped centrepiece gilt edges. Manuscript with many contributions in French and English a single contribution in Dutch and a four-line verse in German mainly written in the same hand probably of the owner of this album. With 45 mounted or occasionally loosely inserted drawings paintings and prints in various formats some coloured by contemporary hands. 96 ll. A beautiful example of a richly decorated and illustrated album amicorum a book of poetry and a scrapbook in one. Alba amicorum were a popular and pleasant pastime at this time as the first sentence of the album immediately makes clear: "Albums are all the rage and scrap-books too". Although the album contains many poems by various poets possibly mostly copied by the owner of the album herself a girl from a noble family probably Miss van Boetzelaer the album also contains many contributions by others particularly women. Examples are F. Testa Adèle B. J. van Winter H.v.W. A. van der Goes H.G. v.d. G. J.C. van Beresteyn H.J.B. C.B. A. de Schwartzenberg et Hohenlansberg H. Repelaer van Driel A.G. v. B. en A. de la B. The contributors probably made the drawings and watercolours to accompany their written entries and the owner mounted them in the album herself. Some of the most remarkable among the richly illustrated contributions are a loosely inserted mountain landscape in watercolour by Johannes van Ravenswaay 1815-1849 a bouquet with flowers in gouache by Wilhelma van Boetzelaer an English teacher at the royal military academy at Breda and another bouquet by A.J. Taets d'Amerongen née de Boetzelaer. Another beautiful drawing of three hummingbirds is executed in gouache and decorated with gold by Suzette van B. who wrote several contributions for this album. Also beautiful are a still life with fruits drawn by Mimi Stratenus two gouaches of butterflies on pith paper by C. Bicker Borski and Christine van Berestyn and gouache paintings of a rose by Elisa Hanbury and a butterfly by Dorothée Palland Sandberg. Also mounted in this album are engraved portraits of William Shakespeare 1564-1616 and Pierre Corneille 1606-1684 probably reflecting the poetic tastes of the albums owner. This album is not only a beautiful example of the alba amicorum culture among noble women which flourished for centuries but also a book for a woman made primarily by women reflecting an important part of the culture of noble women in the first half of the 19th century.Some occasional spotting and browning and the large number of insertions has overfilled the binding so that it bulges slightly but otherwise in good condition. A very interesting album amicorum with many contributions drawings and prints by women in a beautiful contemporary binding. unknown

A large archive of 17 signed letters 2 signed cards 4 original manuscript pieces 1 original drawing 11 blank empty envelopes addressed to the recipient one with a drawing of a cat in ink and 1 inscribed book all sent from the prolific science fiction writer Brian W. Aldiss to his long-time friend Patrick Eddington the late Utah artist and former high school art teacher who had as a goal the desire to create “The Cat Project†where literary and visual artists from around the world were asked to produce original works about cats which would be included in a traveling exhibition and book unfortunately never realized. Brian Wilson Aldiss 1925-2017 born in Norfolk England was not only a prolific writer of science fiction short stories and novels but also anthologized science fiction and studied the history of the genre as well. Much of the background material in his works stemmed from his military service from 1943 through World War II in the Royal Corps of Signals in India Burma and Sumatra. Aldiss was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2004. He was for many years happily married to Margaret Aldiss an editor and bibliographer who produced three bibliographies of Aldiss’s works. This archive is unique in that it represents a consistent and intensely personal correspondence over two years between close friends. This’ll be a short one; I’m now too old and lazy to undertake another bloody great 3-volume operation.†Signed by Aldiss at the close.<br /> <br /> Typed letter most likely written by Margaret Aldiss typed on both sides of a sheet of paper 8 ¼†x 10â€. Dated the 5th of November year not given. This letter was written at the time that their children were in their teen-age years. In this bit of correspondence Margaret mentions how busy Brian is with his writing career. She writes “I am kept busy with my word processor putting all Brian’s stories through it and looking after this house.â€<br /> <br /> TLS. Typed on 2 sheets of paper 8 ¼†x 11 ¾†dated 21.xi.92 on letterhead with the author’s Boars Hill Oxford address. In this long letter to Patrick Aldiss writes quite a bit about his own writing bringing up his recently published book “Home Life with Cats†a copy of which he has enclosed for Pat. He also writes that it has been an indifferent publishing year for him listing what he has produced and claiming “ I do turn ‘em out.†He goes on to mention that his chief preoccupation is with his “slow-growing†novel “Burnell’s Travels.†As he states “BURNELL started as a couple of short stories; then I realized what I had a hold of. I began thinking about the novel last year when Margaret and I were holidaying in an idyllic spot in France lost in the green depths of the Perigord.<br /> “While we were there in that pleasant little farmhouse I finished REMEMBRANCE DAY… I then had about two days of real holiday in which to relax. But already thoughts of Burnell were bubbling. Ah how pleasantly idle was I in the early seventies. Since I’ve grown old I have lost the gift of idleness. I can’t stop writing- notes poems whatever. Partly this is the hope to leave something- a name as well as money- to my darling wife and four dear children. But in the main it’s just something of which you know difficult to articulate the drive to translate the world or more modestly one’s own ‘umwelt’ into words and pictures. Right†Aldiss has signed at the foot.<br /> <br /> TLS. Letter typed on a sheet of paper 8 ¼†x 11 ¾†with the author’s letterhead bearing his Oxford address dated Tuesday 1st of June year not specified. This piece of correspondence is special because it contains a detailed original sketch by Aldiss covering a substantial portion of the page of the Greek town Monemvasia. This charming sketch highlights the ruinous church the steep ascent the location of their hotel and a “1 mile beautiful walk.†His simple sketch truly conveys the feeling of the town. Aldiss writes “Pat Monemvasia is wonderful! They dub it ‘Gilbraltar of Greece’ but the real Gibraltar is a lewd dump built over the meagre Brit military housing and stuffed with Indian shops; it’s a bazaar. Monemvasia is a mystery. It’s a hell of a great chunk of rock connected to the mainland only by a causeway. A natural fortress… The place is semi-ruinous; restoration is taking place. Mid-level is a narrow ‘road’ on which tourists live choc-a-bloc with tavernas and shoplets selling postcards honey pottery junk and the inevitable T-shirts. Above crowning the place and achieved by a taxing ascent is the old fortress once besieged by Turks Byzants Franks and any number of other bastards. The old church is being patched up: otherwise it’s acres of rock garden up there colonized by brilliant or modest plants euphorbias herbs… A mile below lies the Aegean breathing indigo. Marvellous place. He then goes on to mention that he will be attending the 16th Conference of the Fantastic referring to himself as “their Permanent Special Guest.†He continues highlighting his busy schedule by stating “Life is extremely full. In fact it overflows. I’m writing several things including a shambolic object which could be construed as autobiography or something – THE TWINKLING OF AN EYE. However what’s enclosed see below is a sort of core-plug through my geological time written for a friend. I thought you might be interested; it reflects more rackety times in Oxford Past.†Signed “Your pal Brian.â€<br /> <br /> The above letter was sent with an eleven-page 8 ¼†x 11 ½†computer-typed original manuscript of a story Aldiss was working on entitled “The Story of a Funeral: Remembering George Halcrow.†This piece as one might expect is chock-full of memories of how George met his wife how George found Brian a room when his first marriage collapsed and the first time Brian took Margaret out for a meal.<br /> <br /> TLS. Computer-typed letter on a sheet of paper 8 ¼†x 11 3/4†dated 9/4/96 on Aldiss’s Oxford letterhead. In this letter Brian thanks Patrick for his customary round of gifts one of which is a frame in which he debates “whether to change the picture from a view of old China to a view of young Margaret.†Signed “Yours ever Brian†at the foot.<br /> <br /> TLS. Computer-generated letter on a sheet of paper 8 ¼†x 11 ½†dated 9/9/99 dated two years after the death of his wife from pancreatic cancer and printed with the author’s Old Headington Oxford address at the head. The author writes “It’s good to hear that the project continues and develops. I will include my “Cat Improvement Co†poem in the envelope in case you can use it. I really don’t know any cat artists though.<br /> “It’s so good-hearted of you to think of naming a star after Margaret. She really deserves no less. Her name is spelled MARGARET ALDISS. The family will be proud and comforted to hear what you are doing.†Signed by Aldiss at foot.<br /> <br /> Xerox copy 10†x 8 ¼†reproducing a poem by Brian Aldiss titled “The Cat Improvement Company.†Eddington later printed this poem as a limited edition broadside published by The Green Cat Press in 2004. The Green Cat Press was a small press run by Patrick Eddington and fellow Utah artist Susan Makov. In the aforementioned letter Aldiss commentated that he knew no “cat artists.†In the end Patrick himself provided the illustration.<br /> <br /> TLS. Computer-typed letter on a sheet of paper 8 ¼†x 11 ½†dated 1/11/0 on letterhead printed with his Old Headington address. In this letter to Patrick Aldiss acknowledges having been through a lot in the last few years but he survives “thanks to some splendid ladies who have entered my life and to the creative urge which does not seem to abate.†He also mentions having in his possession a large deed box with his diaries from the sixties and seventies. He comments “I’m currently writing Journal No. 36. They have become fuller since I’m in the house alone with no one to talk to. Mostly they are A5 and illustrated with cuttings etc. I don’t know what to do with them this all-too-ample record of a foolish life. I expect to present them to the Bodleian Library. Then this house will be three deed boxes lighter…<br /> Of course I could leave them to my excellent daughter Wendy. She might possibly squeeze a little money from them- from the dirty bits as it were!†Signed by Aldiss at the close.<br /> <br /> TLS. FedEx have delivered the star certificate in pristine order with the name of Margaret Aldiss inscribed upon it…. So there she is gleaming up there in Cyngus… It’s really a super thought of yours. I don’t mind admitting I shed a few tears over it tears of sorrow but also of gratitude that we had such a good pal. Much appreciated.†What follows is Aldiss’s acknowledgement of his grief for Margaret along with an almost schoolgirl-like discussion of his current infatuations with women. He ends the letter by very affectionately stating “what you say about my role on sic your life is very flattering. But we formed an immediate friendship- it has certainly been important in my life too. I’m happy to know you. I’ll never forget the warmth of your kindness to me.†Signed by Aldiss.<br /> <br /> TLS. Two-page letter written with a computer on sheets of paper 8 ¼†by 11 ½†dated the 26th of September year not mentioned but circa 2000 from Brian W. Aldiss to Patrick Eddington. With Aldiss’s Oxford address printed at the head. In this long and extremely personal letter Aldiss describes his recent travels in full detail. “The sloop was beautiful and comfortable. Five Turks looked after us hoisted the sails boxed the compass did the cooking etc. We were able to swim from the boat most days either in open sea or in a sheltered bay. The food and wine were good and plentiful; since we had paid for everything beforehand we were generous with the wine. But above all the other passengers were darlings- intelligent companionable and witty… I soon became fond of every one of them and I believe they became fond of me. In fact we came to prefer sitting on our stern deck just chatting laughing singing to tramping round the ruins ashore. The weather was perfect as we sailed slowly northwards on the Aegean.†At one point he even brings up the bleak effect of World War I on the Dardenelles reflecting that “The slaughter on that campaign was ghastly. The Turks lost an estimated 300000 killed the Allies 265000. I spent some sombre hours walking there among the pines thinking about my father. Of course I am fortunate but it really means no creative time at all. On Monday I returned from a conference at Liverpool University while on Thursday I have to fly to the South of France which of course will be very pleasant for a conference on the Noir in Film and Fiction. After that a more peaceful time I’m hoping before I retreat to a Greek island for a coupla weeks.†Signed at the foot by Aldiss.<br /> <br /> TLS. Letter composed with a computer on a sheet of paper 8 ¼†x 11 ½†dated 3/12/1 on Aldiss’s Oxford letterhead. In this letter Aldiss comments on the curious nature of the publishing business stating “My new reprint publishers Stratus have recently gone bust: but not before they reprinted ‘Brightfount Diaries.’ This new edition omits the original pictures. However here’s a copy. My first book. Terribly dated. Insane to have reprinted it… No wonder they went bust.†Next Aldiss discusses the “Cat Improvement Co†broadside wondering how many he will be able to acquire for himself without seeming greedy. Then near the close of the letter Aldiss muses on the changing medium of their correspondence revealing himself to be a diehard letter writer: “It’s a bit sad you are going on email. There is a pleasure in writing letters and certainly a pleasure in receiving your hand-written ones.†Also of interest in this letter is the fact that Aldiss encloses “another cat poem a rather sinister thing.†The letter is signed at the foot by Aldiss.<br /> <br /> Original manuscript poem printed from the computer on a sheet of paper 8 ¼†x 11 ¾â€. The title at the head of this poem is “Domestic Incident.†The second stanza of the poem reads “All animal burly cat hideous but beautiful / My beautiful Sotkin puissant in movement / Jaw locked round jackdaw / He struggles through the door / Into kitchen his cave its grave/ Twice himself in elegant fury. / Darker fangs grind my bones.â€<br /> <br /> TLS. In this letter the author comments on the search for Bin Laden as well as the "Cat Improvement Co." broadside. Brian has signed at the bottom. Enclosed in the letter are the two pieces listed below.<br /> <br /> A two-page 8 ¼†x 12 ½†computer typed original manuscript entitled “The Cat Machine.†This story is what can only be termed a sci-fi/ horror cat story involving a sort of Frankenstein-like cat that continues to grow eventually consuming a postman and a refrigerator then attacking his owner when his back is turned before disappearing into the night. The horror does not stop there- the machine cat goes on to become a world concern. On a lighter note the story does end with the machine cat becoming King of Albania.<br /> <br /> “The Cat Machine.†An original collage/drawing in marker and ink on paper 11 ¾†x 8 ¼â€. With the author’s initials in ink in the lower right corner.<br /> <br /> TLS. Computer-typed letter on two sheets of paper 8 ¼†x 11 ½†dated 12/10/1 on Aldiss’s letterhead printed with his Old Headington Oxford address. Aldiss begins this letter with beautiful imagery and words writing “It’s just on five of the afternoon. Sunlight filters into my west-facing windows into my study and my small sitting room. You’d have to be a brute not to be moved by the beauty of the light.†The letter changes its tone a bit when Aldiss addresses the atrocities of September 11. He writes “The world has changed. It’s misery all uncertainty and foreboding. While appreciating that one must get a hold of the fanatic bin Laden I grieve at the incessant bombing carried out by US and UK planes and ships. Christ Kabul was already ruinous. It is always liable to seem like a war of the Rich against the Poor.†As per usual Aldiss also includes some extremely personal information in this letter pointing out that he has a “darling lover who lives only two doors away. Her name is Alison and great is my admiration for her. We went to a Greek island together last month and bliss it was.†Signed at the foot by Aldiss.<br /> <br /> TLS. Computer-typed letter on a sheet of paper 8 ¼†x 11 3/4†dated 12 February 2002 on Aldiss’s letterhead printed with his Old Headington Oxford address. In this communication Aldiss discusses the notion of collaboration between artists. He states “I hope your collaboration with Cees Nooteboom works out well. I had enough – quite pleasurable – problems collaborating with Roger Penrose to cure me of the wish ever to collaborate again.†Signed by Brian above the postscript. <br /> <br /> TLS. Brief computer-typed letter on a sheet of paper 8 ¼†x 11 ½†dated 5 March 2002 on letterhead printed with his Old Headington address. In this communication Aldiss refers to what Eddington calls “the screw up†and offers to return the broadsides stating at the same time “Unfortunately I feel oddly reluctant to append my signature.†Signed by the writer at the close.<br /> <br /> TLS. In the body of the letter the author addresses the fact that he is as is typical very busy. He asks “How is your press studio getting on You sound busy. So am I doing all sorts of work. Plus trying to write a large ambitious novel The Walcot Novel; I have 65000 on the computer so far. Last week I spent two days in a recording studio reading aloud my novel ‘Affairs at Hampden Ferrers’ into the mike doing all the voices. Two days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Quite fun if you concentrate. This for an audio book. I’ll send you a copy when it is published.†Signed by Aldiss at the foot.<br /> <br /> “An Account of My Daughter Charlotte May’s Wedding Sunday 30th May 2004.†An original 6-page computer-typed prose piece on paper 8 ¼†x 11 ½â€. This is an incredibly detailed account of the proceedings where at one point Aldiss asks “What would Margaret have made of it all†One feels her presence several times in this piece although she has passed. As in the piece Aldiss wrote about his friend’s funeral one sees here the constant musing about life’s experiences and the effect of these experiences as well as the process of growing older. He poignantly writes “We cuddled our drinks then sauntered about the pleasant open space chatting. Everyone looked so decorative young old and in-between alike. . Nafisa the darling Hashemite Princess accompanied by Martin and Nicky looking quite her old self though perhaps less bubbley sic than usual after her recent encounter with cancer…. And my old passion Hilary Sharp long since Hilary Parsons with her husband Adrian still easy to look at and he the perfect gentleman i.e. a little stiff. It’s many a year since we worked together Hilary and I in Parker’s bookshop. She was never tall and has put on some weight but I read in her face in her expression her eyes that little glint of mischief I well recalled as if everything including our advancing age was secretly rather fun.†Aldiss does bring up his new loving partner in life also in attendance Alison which adds to the atmosphere the feeling of progression from loss to a sort of “re-birth†in life. Inscribed by Aldiss to Eddington at the close of the piece: “Dear Pat- Just thought you might be interested! Regards Brian.â€<br /> <br /> A two-page email letter printed on paper 8 ½†x 11†dated August 29 2004. Subject: “Prints. Corfu. Albania. Games.†In this email Aldiss mentions that he will fly to Boston for the World Con noting that his older son Clive “on the premise that I am getting old and incapable is flying over from Athens to accompany me look after me and generally get in the way.†Despite discussing the fact that he is advancing in years the email contains much that is upbeat and positive. For example he writes “I took my darling and lovely ami Alison off to Corfu for a week’s break. It was perfect. The skies were always blue. It was warm. The sea was warm. We slept under a mosquito net… We ate in many a beach taverna… Generous Greek salads with feta cheese. The fish caught just before dawn were consumed as dusk gathered. And we drank endless bottles of retsina. And we laughed and kissed and screwed. I cannot tell you what a wonder what a darling Alison is extremely honest humorous and with a talent to be happy and amused. She has changed my life and maybe made me less of a bastard.â€<br /> <br /> Autographed Christmas/New Year Card Signed. Folded 6†x 4â€. No date. The card reads: “Dear Pat. The Life and Death of Alexander the Great. In X. Books. London: E. Alsop and Robert Wood 1661. Small quarto 6 x 7-1/2 modern full brown calf elaborately gilt-decorated spine raised bands black morocco spine label. Housed in a custom black linen slipcase. 1661 edition the scarce second edition of Robert Codrington's esteemed translation into English of this life of Alexander the Great a splendid volume attractively bound in full calf. Curtius Rufus flourished in the first century C.E.; particulars of his life are unknown. His Historiarum Alexandri Magni "introduces a number of picturesque details which are grouped effectively; and the career of the great Macedonian is regarded as a series of brilliant and romantic adventures. There are a number of carefully finished speeches worked into the narrative and much sententious reflection. The style is evidently formed on that of Livy" Peck 449. Preceded by John Brende's 1553 first translation into English which ran through a number of printings in the intervening century before Codrington undertook his new translation "exactly conferred with the Original and purged from many gross errors and absurdities with which it before abounded." Codrington's translation first appeared in 1652 under a slightly different title see Wing C7699. Title page with wood-cut engraved vignette engraved headpieces and ornamental initials. Occasional mispagination toward the end as issued without loss of text. A superlative example handsomely bound. Book Bv1103. $4000.
