Early-Victorian tour of Scotland. Manuscript itinerary of a 'Tour through the western part of the midland Counties of Scotland - good or tolerable carriage roads all the way distance to be travelled in all 480 miles or say 500 -'.
Without place or date. On paper watermarked 'R MUNN & Co 1838'. . 4pp. 4to. Bifolium. In good condition on lightly aged and worn paper and wrapped in a leaf carrying the name 'Miss Sandham' possible recipient. Neatly and closely written out over the whole four pages. Beneath the heading: 'May be easily made out in three weeks'. Almost all of the first three pages are given over to a description of the eighteen stages of the tour with the number of miles and observations beginning and ending at Edinburgh and taking in Stirling Crieff Aberfeldy Killin Inverary Dalmally Oban Ballachulish Fort William Inverness Blair Atholl Perth and a few other places. As an example: 'Ballahulish to Fort William 14 miles Cross the Ferry - follow the side of Loch Linnhe & Loch Eil to Ft. William where is a good Inn. They say there is a better Inn at Corpach where the Steamer starts through the Caledonian Canal. - Shld. be more convenient at least - see if possible part of Glen Nevis.' The second part of the document beginning at the end of the third page begins: 'There is a mail coach from Inverness to Edinburgh in which I wd advise you to travel between Aviemore & Blair Atholl. The rest of this route you had better travel slowly & deliberately in an open Droskey i.e. Droshky . You cannot take too many cloaks & shawls - the waiters are generally slow & the Landlords for the most part greedy. The Beds as a general rule are clean tho' the sheets are often damp if the chambermaids be not well looked after - you may be always sure of good eggs & good milk. & the tea is better than the coffee -'. The text continues with more information concerning inns and food before turning to the weather the 'simple rule' regarding which is 'that if during breakfast the mists rise on the mountain side it will be a fair day if they fall a wet one. Put no confidence in Lowland prognostics even in the landlord respecting the weather . In short always suspect the sincerity of a highland Landlord in an inferior Inn in a well frequented road'. ONE: 'The Encyclopaedia Britannica Dinner given by Sir Donald Mackenzie Wallace. Hotel Cecil Friday Evening November 21st 1902. Plan of Tables.' 28.5 x 80 cm folding up into a 28.5 x 13.5 cm packet. Printed in black and red on the whole of one side with the other side carrying a 'Programme of Music' 'M. G. Fericescu Musical Director' an alphabetical table and a cover with engraved illustration. Made out in pencil to 'Mr. A. Williams K24' i.e. the Liberal MP Aneurin Williams. TWO: 'MENU 1768 The Encyclopaedia Britannica Dinner 1902 Given by Sir Donald Mackenzie Wallace Friday November 21st 1902.' Card bifolium. 17.5 x 12.5 cm. Cover printed in black and red with engraved portrait of William Smellie. Back cover with engraving of 'Three Contributors' Sir Walter Scott Thomas De Quincey and Thomas Babington Macaulay. In addition to the menu and a 'List of Toasts' the centre pages carry three definitions 'rhetoric' 'wine' and 'banquet' from the first edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. No other copy of either item traced either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC although OCLC WorldCat records two copies of a sixteen-page booklet for the dinner. Grove Mill Watford Hertfordshire. No date. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. Ends abruptly at the end of the fourth page and without signature. For the period an unusually frank expression of distress apparently over the death of his wife's elder daughter He thanks her for calling on him with books - 'when you so kindly came to that House though I had intended so very much to see you I felt all my courage fail - & that I should. only distress you & do myself harm if I saw you'. Being in the country has done him 'a great deal of good'; he is 'quite a different creature' and has 'taken even to drawing!' Turning to his wife Lady Maria Theresa Lewis née Villiers 1803-1865 he writes: 'Theresa has been less well for to her the change has brought most painful associations. Leaving London having always been the happy time when she had more of his society. However she is now better again & we can only pray to God to bring her through this dreary time of sorrow'. He was not able to read her books in London but has been doing so 'by bits' in Watford. There are references to 'Griffith's book' and 'the poem' before the abrupt end. Early nineteenth-century transcription of a document dated 28 March 1575 . 15pp. folio on 10 leaves of laid paper. In a number of hands with marginal glosses. In good condition on aged paper. The conclusion reads: 'Wee will also &c that ye aforesaid Sr. Jno Foster have &c these our Letters Patent under our great Seal of England &c without fine or Freedom because before mentiond & expressed &c in Witness &c Tested at Gothamburg ye 28th. of March'. On reverse of last leaf: '17. Eliz. i.e. 1575. The document begins: 'The Queen to all to whom &c. Greeting Whereas We by our Letters Patent under our Great Seal of England made and bearing Date at Westminster the Tenth Day of July in the Tenth Year of our Reign did Give grant and to farm let to our Wellbeloved John Forster Knight Guardian of our mean Marches of this our Kingdom of England against Scotland amongst other Things .'. White label 'ON VIEW' stuck to front cover. 392 3 lots fully priced in manuscript for the proprietor with the firm's stamp and a signature dated from 'The Exchange Calcutta 24th. February 1912'. An interesting and evocative piece of Raj social history itemising the property of a judge who was selling up before retiring to England. The first item is 'A CURRY Stone with muller' '-/8/- lot' and Item 392 'a Salamander' '3/- lot'. The last three lots unnumbered are 'a Standard Square Pianoforte by Schiedmayer and Soehne Stuttghart in mahogany case resting on four supports' '125/- lot' 'a teakwood morocco covered revolving Music Stool' '10/-â€-' and 'a Chubb's Fire-resisting Iron Safe with key … on teakwood stand' '115/-â€-'. Written from England. Note by author: 'Copy to Robt. Bateson Esq. May 8th. 1816'. 2pp. 4to. In good condition lightly-aged folded into packet. 34 lines of text. He begins by expressing his pleasure on Bateson's 'kind attention in naming me one of the God Fathers to your little Boy' the future Conservative MP Robert Bateson 1816-1843. He next turns to the agricultural crisis: 'The accot. you give me of the state of the North of Ireland is very distressing under these circumstances. I feel no inclination to witness it by visiting my Estate there this Summer. I assure you there has been much distress also in this Country few Gentlemen indeed have been paid the whole of their Rent & some of my friends have been obliged to occupy their Farms themselves but within the last fortnight from what cause I cant say theh Price of Wheat has risen considerably & our Farmers begin to smile & enquire about Farms to let & I trust in less than a Twelve Month all will be well again'. He reports that the 'Price of Landed Estates has fallen with us from the Scarcity of Money'. He wonders how things stand in Ireland: 'I thought with you about the Property Tax but I feel the comfort now of its being repeal'd perhaps'. He has observed 'the Inquisitorial & insufferable tendeny of its being a Commission' and hopes 'Ministers will never be driven to adopt it again'. He reports that his son Robert has 'gone on a sporting excursion to Scotland' adding 'He has not the same itch for travel thaht I had at his age'. A main topic of the meeting was as Sir Lambton Loraine explained the assertion by the Duke of Norfolk of his 'right to a jurisdiction over the Baronetage in every way' and his belief that he has 'a right to keep our record at his own house in St. James's Square whereas we have not yet got the King's answer to the Home Secretary's Committee's proposal that a person appointed by the Home Office should be the future Registrar of the Roll of the Baronetage'. Another matter discussed was 'whether the title "Baronet" should be on one's card'. The first article produced on the eve of Indian independence begins: 'Moscow radio broadcast an account of a lecture given by Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences Zhukove on "The Situation in India" at the Polytechnical Museum in Moscow.' It proceeds with a summary of Zhukov's lecture the view he expounds including the following: 'Britain's new policy derives from the economic changes which took place in India during the years of the Second World War. India's big bourgeoisie made profits from the war and have become richer and at the same time more compliant towards Britain. The bourgeoisie's fear of the popular masses is greater than their fear of Britain.' The second articles is pure propaganda beginning: 'A vast territory of over 1158000 sq. miles lies in the North-East of the Soviety Union. In Tsarist days it was known as "the Siberia of Siberia." It is now the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic - a part of the Russian Federation - which is just celebrating the 25th anniversary of its foundation says a TASS message.' Covering letter dated from Budapest Hungary 8 April 1985. 27pp. 8vo. The article on 'The Budapest War Cemetery' is 7pp. 8vo and the accompanying 'Register of the Graves in the Budapest War Cemetery' is 21pp. 8vo. There is also a page of 'Abbreviations to the Register'. A few manuscript emendations. The covering letter is addressed to 'David' and is effusive in its offer of further assistance the author urging 'David' to rewrite the piece as he sees fit. It is signed faintly and undecipherably. The author writes in good but not entirely idiomatic English and has gone to some trouble. The article describes the wartime background to the establishment of 'The English Cemetery at Solymár' from the first man buried there Flight Sergeant Gordon G. Pemberton an Australian pilot of a Wellington bomber shot down on the night of 3 April 1944. The 'Register' lists the 205 graves each with all the information to be found on the tombstone. Also present are four strips of negatives with one larger negative of a single image and a contact sheet strip reproducing the 35 pictures on the negative strips. The last is annotated on the reverse in pencil. Also included are three black and white photographs described as 'three bad prints' in the letter: one of the cemetery in snow and the other two of Pemberton's crashed Wellington bomber. Place not stated England . 1928. The table or bloom calendar is in a makeshift table ruled out in pencil over 2pp. folio. It is in poor condition heavily-aged divided into two sections along central horizontal fold line and with slight loss to text from chipping. Headed '1928' the table has columns for each month from January to December with the time during which the various flowers are in bloom blocked out for a list of around 115 flowers in chronological order with the earliest blooming first from snowdrops crocuses pansies forget me nots tulips to asters sunflowers phloxes gaillardia Barr's pink japonica grey lady heather shades little boy blue little pink lady. The plan of the unnamed garden is 1p. folio in smilar aged condition to the table with chipping and a long closed tear along the central horizontal fold. Apparently incomplete it is a simple drawing of the layout in pencil with dots in ink presumably indicating places of planting. The names of a few plants are written in pencil: 'cerastium <abyssium> aubrictia arabis'. Beneath the plan in ink: '72 plants on inside edging. 6" apart 60 plants on second edging 8" apart 50 plants on third edging 8" apart 16 plants on outside border 2" apart'. In manuscript but laid out as a printed book 'A "Guernsey's Own" Publication' said to be 'Specially printed by the "Guernsey Gazette"' and sponsored by the non-existant 'Higher Butterfatters' League'. Undated 1950s . 28pp. 4to. Sewn into a booklet and bound in cream boards with 'A "Guernsey's Own" Publication' on the front cover and 'Sponsored by the Higher Butterfatters' League' on the back. There is no indication that the manuscript has been published. It is laid out as a printed book with title-page with charming illustration of the smiling cow and dedication page reading: 'To V M. the Honorable Patroness of the foster Mothers' Welfare Group This book is respectfully dedicated.' The poem consists of 36 four-line stanzas with fifteen charming vignettes. The poem begins: 'Would-be farmers take heed when selecting a breed To compose your new herd's population: Dairy cows are your dream All that glorious cream Is a very strong recommendation.' and 'You want breeding and style in your herd's rank & file Sweetest tempers intelligence too Then we know just the cow - we can tell you right now That the GUERNSEY'S the creature for you.' The poem proceeds to tell the tale of the eponymous bovine heroine who is 'born to be Queen' with reference to the 'T. T. test' and the 'Milk Marketing till' the Milk Marketing Board was founded in 1933. The last stanza reads: 'And to farmers despairing and really past caring Who at last feel they must shut up shop - Try not to forget the success of Nanette - Guernseys always come out on the top.' The Le Fleming family of Rydal Hall. 16 manuscript items from the family papers of Barbara Le Fleming Benson sister of Sir Daniel Fleming including material relating to a disputed will miscellaneous correspondence and genealogical memoranda.

The Le Flemings of Rydal Hall were a leading Cumbrian family notable as the landlords of the poet William Wordsworth. The present collection of 15 items derive from the family papers of Barbara Le Fleming eldest child of Roger and Ann Fleming and sister of Sir Daniel le Fleming c.1785-1821 5th Baronet who married John Benson 1780-1830 in 1809. The first five items listed below concern the 'bone of Contention' that was the will of Daniel Fleming; the next six are miscellaneous items including three letters to Mrs Benson and a banking bill; and the last five items contain material relating to family history. The collection is in fair overall condition on aged and worn paper. SECTION A: Correspondence relating to the Will of Daniel Fleming 1835-1838. Five items. ONE: John Benson to 'Dear Barbara Benson'. Carlisle; 16 November 1835. Explaining that 'the Rydal money is still a bone of Contention' and giving his reasons for objecting to a proposition put forward by her brother's son. TWO: W. N. The London College of Educational Dance Training The Lodge Rawdon Hall Holyport near Maidenhead Berkshire. 1944 1945 and 1946. The London College of Educational Dance Training opened at Rawdon Hall in 1944 merged with Middlesex University in 1994 and shut in 2003. Grace Cone the first principal retired in 1966 and was replaced by her vice-principal Anita Heyworth. Heyworth retired in 1973 and was replaced by Phrosso Pfister. Pfister had become a student at the college in 1945 following war service with the SOE in Egypt and Italy and had become a staff member in 1949. The present collection of five items is from Pfister's papers. ONE: Early printed prospectus for three-year course at the 'London College of Educational Dance Training' with The Lodge Holyport near Maidenhead Berkshire given as the 'Temporary address prior to London residence'. 3pp. 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition aged and worn. Slug: 'H & S 9491/46'. The reverse of the first leaf lists the thirteen members of the 'Advisory Board' including Cyril Beaumont and Olive Ripman together with the staff headed by 'Principal: - Miss Grace Cone Member Grand Council Technical and Executive Committees and Examiner Royal Academy of Dancing. Advanced Member Greek Dance Association. Fellow Licentiate and Member 6 Branches of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing Inc. Advanced Cecchetti Certificate and Ballroom Committee.' and 'Vice-Principal: - Miss Anita Heyworth Fellow of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing Inc. and Examiner Natural Movement Branch. The prospectus proper on twenty-eight lines of small print heads the recto of the second leaf and begins: 'The recognition that Dancing properly taught by teachers with a scientific understanding of movement can play a very important part in the education of the growing child is opening a new field for the dancing profession. The London College of Educational Dance Training has been founded to meet this requirement.' The 'Fees: payable in advance' are given at the foot of the page. The cost of 'Full training including board residence' is fifty guineas. TWO: Typed Letter Signed from Grace Cone. On the College letterhead Rawdon Hall which states that she is 'Assisted by highly qualified Staff'. 28 June 1945. Accepting Pfister as a student and adding that 'there is a very big demand for qualified teachers in schools and I cannot fill all the vacancies; I do hope you will be successful in obtaining your release.' In monogrammed envelope of the Cone School. THREE: One ALS and three TLsS to Pfister from Anita Heyworth. The first an autograph Air Mail letter to 'Ensign H. P. Pfister 18027 Military Est. 57. C. M. F.' Dated 9 December 1944. Sending 'Christmas greetings from Miss Atkinson and myself' and expressing keenness on having her 'as a student at the London College of Dance Training' and sending a prospectus. The 'Advisory Board' in Item One includes 'Miss Madge Atkinson – Hon. Vice-Chairman and Founder of Natural Movement Branch of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing Inc.' Second a typed letter on the College letterhead 20 March 1945. She is pleased to hear of Pfister's return to England and is enclosing 'the promised prospectus which you can use for your interview with Commander Cope – Tell her that you wish to enter a training college for Teachers – that we are running on similar lines to the physical training colleges – but with dancing as the main practical subject instead of gymnastics'. She hopes that Pfister can join in September: 'I should think the war will be over by then so maybe they would release you'. Third a typed letter on the College letterhead 4 May 1945. She thanks her for writing about her live in Italy and hopes that her 'holiday at Warminster will help to complete the cure'. She also deserves 'a little time of gaiety' at the London theatres. 'It will be very nice indeed if you can do part time work in London and part time at the Cone School to get back into practise.' She suggests a meeting to discuss matters. 'Yes we were in Bognor for Sheila's show. It was very bad luck that she tore a muscle in her leg just five minutes before the curtain went up!' The 'war news' is 'grand': 'It makes one feel as though the news for which we have longed for so many years is a trifle unreal. It seems wrong to celebrate too much when men are still having to fight in the East.' Four typed letter from Rawdon Hall 18 June 1945. She is pleased to learn from Cone that Pfister is joining the College in the autumn. The term begins on 28 September and it is 'more than probable that we shall not be at Maidenhead as we hope to find a building nearer to London … We are very busy with rehearsals and work for our Advisory Board demonstration and therefore I am never in London where Pfister will be working in September at 'the Cone School' in an evening and seldom during the daytime just now.' The letter ends on the subject of attendance at 'the Imperial Congress'. The letter begins: 'In consequence of the embarrassing finances of the Old Drury Club and its being uncertain whether or no it can any longer hold its deliberative meetings at its accustomed place of redevous sic - it has been determined by a majority of its members - to resolve themselves into a committee of ways and means'. Details are given of the arrangements for the meeting at the Piazza Coffee House the purpose being to consider 'how far it would be prudent under existing circumstances to raise supplies for the further prosecution of so just and necessary an establishment.' Little is known of the subject of the letter but in 1816 William Linley dedicated his 'Shakspeare's Dramatic Songs' to 'The Old Drury Club a Social Circle round the Shrine of Shakspeare Cherishing his Memory and Revering his Genius.' Kilmainham Hospital was a home for retired soldiers along the lines of Les Invalides and much of the material in this paper consists of correspondence of Secretaries of State for War John Cam Hobhouse and Edward Ellice. The volume is a response to Hobhouse's proposal 'to bring into one building and under one management the several establishments of the in-pensioners of Chelsea and of Kilmainham hospitals. . These institutions are not peculiarly appropriated to the worn-out Irish soldier or to the orphans of native Irish soldiers; and the institutions in England are open equally to the British and Irish soldier and orphan I am not therefore aware of any national reason for maintaining separate establishments under separate managements at a very considerable increased expense to the public for institutions which appear to be precisely similar in their objects.' In fair condition lightly aged and worn. 53 signatures over four pages written after the following: 'April 1939 Dear Herman: Keep up your Heart & Get well soon. We need your kingly cheery presence'. One signatory has written a bar of music another has drawn a face another has written after his name 'now then – up beat!' Victorian women and the legal profession. Illustrated humorous manuscript valentine poem in the form of a 'Brief for the opinion of Mr Harington' on what would happen if the 'ladies' appeared 'in wig and gown' with 'â€chambers†up in town.'
London. Dated at head 'February 13th. A.D. 1890'. 3pp. 4to. Bifolium. Folded in customary fashion with 'Brief for the opinion of Mr Harington' on the outside of the packet beneath which in another hand: 'Feby 14th. 1890 Richard Harington Esq'. The author's hand is clearly disguised as is usual with valentines the writing being markedly ornate. There are various crude drawings in the margins ranging from images of a barrister and a woman faces of two women one smoking a pipe to small representations of cigar boxes briefs and books. The text of the poem which is unpublished reads: 'I sit me down and take my pen And write to you this line To greet you as in former years. Upon Saint Valentine Another year has rolled away Since February last And think of all those briefs & balls Now reckoned with the past. And may you of the latter have Enough to renovate you And joined with these this year I hope Ten thousand briefs await you. But I must further add – I trust That “Hawky†will have done And not keep you all sitting up Till some time after one! You say some day that ladies will Appear in wig and gown And armed with blue bags & with briefs Have “chambers†up in Town. Its rather sad to think of it What would you poor men do If your briefs went to Mrs. A Instead of going to you The Judge must be a lady too - I'd quite forgotten that But we've no ladies now-a-days To sit as Portia sat And then to think if all the girls Were so Su-per-i-or There'd be no dancing & no fun All would give way to law. Called to the Bar in 1886 he practised as a barrister on the Oxford Circuit before taking up an appointment as a Puisne Judge in the High Court of Justice at Fort William in Bengal in 1899 serving in that capacity until returning home in 1913.
