Small 8vo handsomely bound in contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled paper covered boards the spine ruled in gilt and with a black morocco lettering label gilt. vi 402 pp. A well preserved copy handsome and in good order the binding tight and strong the text-block clean and fresh the map also in fine state. FIRST EDITION OF THIS VERY READABLE HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT. Alexander III of Macedon Ancient Greek: Aléxandros most commonly known as Alexander the Great was king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon. He succeeded his father Philip II to the throne in 336 BC at the age of 20 and spent most of his reign conducting a lengthy military campaign throughout Asia and Egypt. By the age of 30 he had created one of the largest empires in history stretching from Greece to northwestern India. He was undefeated in battle and is widely considered to be one of history's greatest and most successful military commanders.<br> Born in Pella Macedon Alexander was tutored by philosopher and polymath Aristotle until the age of 16. In 335 BC shortly after assuming the throne of Macedon he launched a campaign in the Balkans and reasserted control over Thrace and parts of Illyria before marching on the city of Thebes which was subsequently destroyed. Alexander then assumed leadership of the League of Corinth created by his father.<br> With this authority over all Greeks he launched a pan-Hellenic invasion of the Persian Achaemenid Empire in 334 BC and with it began a series of campaigns which lasted for ten years. Following his conquest of Asia Minor and a series of decisive battles particularly at Issus and Gaugamela the power of the Achaemenid Empire was broken. He subsequently overthrew Darius III and conquered the Achaemenid Empire in its entirety. After the fall of Persia the Macedonian Empire held a vast swath of territory between the Adriatic Sea and the Indus River. Alexander endeavored to reach the "ends of the world and the Great Outer Sea" and invaded India in 326 BC achieving an important victory over Porus an ancient Indian king of present-day Punjab at the Battle of the Hydaspes. Facing mutiny from troops he was eventually forced to turn back at the Beas River and later died in 323 BC in Babylon Mesopotamia the city which he had planned to make the capital of his empire while on his return to Greece. Philadelphia: Printed by John Richards No. 130 North Third Street. 1839. The full title is: 'An Address to the Quarterly Monthly and Preparative Meetings and the Members thereof composing the Yearly Meeting of Friends held in Philadelphia By the Committee appointed at the late Yearly Meeting to have charge of the Subject of Slavery.' 12pp 12mo. Pamphlet in original plain brown wraps. In good condition lightly aged and worn. Begins with two pages of extracts from the minutes 17 May 1839 regarding the setting up of the committee on 'the deeply interesting subject of Slavery' with reference to 'Benjamin Price Jr. Clerk' and 'Deborah F. Wharton Clerk.' The address itself 'Signed by direction and on behalf of the Committee by John Jackson Clerk' is eight pages long. Towards the beginning it notes that 'Many of our forefathers were slave-holders and the unrighteous practice of holding our fellow-creatures in bondage was not then forbidden by our discipline.' The change of policy is described with reference to 'Anthony Benezet and John Woolman'. Later the address notes: 'The advancement of this righteous concern and the increase of light upon the subject of human rights are causing this system of iniquity to totter to its base. Hence under the influence of fearful excitement many are putting forth their strength to impede the progress of principles which if ultimately triumphant will break the fetters of the slave. A part of the trading interests at the North is evidently involved with those of the South and an influence is in this way exerted against the onward course of Emancipation; thus light and darkness antagonize each other.' And later still: 'Within a few years great events hae occurred in relation to Slavery and much light has been spread on the subject. The experience derived from Emancipation in the British West Indies has opened a new era. . while we have painful evidence that a great body of slave-holders are influenced by injustice and cruelty . There are many whose consciences are burdened by a system which they derived from their ancestors . the money of the slave-trader is temptingly held up before them; . they cannot separate the tender ties of family connexion among their slaves; they dare not receive the price of blood. . We believe they are fervently desiring the deliverance of master and slave from the bondage to which both are subjected. Their hearts have bounded with joy at the success of Emancipation in the British West Indies; it has opened a door of hope thaty they also may be legally permitted to prove the advantage of requited labour over that which is extorted by the lash of the oppressor. .'. London 1909. Silver gelatin prints measuring 5 ½ x 4 ½ inches. Editorial marks to verso one marginal tear else about fine with fine contrast very good plus overall. Fine. Western shows particularly Buffalo Bill’s which ran in Earls Court for several years were highly influential in introducing the British public to American Indian culture often in highly fictionalized form. After the Buffalo Bill show ceased performing in London others followed including the The Golden West and American U.S.A. industries exhibition of 1909. Offered here are three photographs of American Indian children from the exhibition who were likely part of the show’s ‘Red Man Spectacle.†They are likely Oglala. The show featured a reenactment of an entirely fictitious event called the “Black Hawk Massacre in Colorado†and some veterans of Cody’s shows including Red Shirt Lone Bear and Painted Horse were among the performers. The three children pictured here are named Little Holy Flower Hold His Hand and Come in Camp. A note to a verso says the pictures were taken concurrently with the Franco-British Exposition which continued for several years in various iterations beginning in 1908. We find one variant image from this shoot otherwise no record of these images which may have been taken by the Brown Brothers firm or possibly ended up in their possession from another photographer. unknown

<b>Scarce Contemporary Stony Point Battle Plan</b><br /><br />This rather crude woodcut depicts a battle plan of General "Mad Anthony" Wayne's daring and dramatic capture of the British fortification at Stony Point about 30 miles up the Hudson River from New York City. The battle planned in detail by Washington took place around midnight on July 16 1779. <br /><br /> The lower portion of the battle plan includes a four item key: "A. The British Fortress B. Abattes abatis in front C. The Reserve D. The detached Party who stormed the Works." Nebenzahl's <i>A Bibliography of Printed Battle Plans of the American Revolution 1775-1795</i> cites only a 1784 London-printed battle plan by Faden for the Stony Point engagement #145. The offered plan is not noted by Nebenzahl was published in America and was issued five years earlier than the Faden plan. The<i> Bickerstaff's Boston Almanack</i> for 1780 would almost certainly have been published in November or December of 1779 – within six months of the actual battle. <br /><br /> A very scarce almanac in the trade. Auction records indicate the most recent copy sold at the Gutman sale in 2005 for $4800. Prior to that Swann sold an example in 1979. <br /><br /><b>References:</b> For the almanac: Evans: 16287; Drake: 3290. For the map: Cresswell: 309. <br /><br /><b>Condition: </b>Map appears on verso of title page and measures about 6 ½ x 3 ¾." It is notable as the site of the first Ferris Wheel and for the introduction of belly dance to American audiences as a salacious entertainment. Japan. Circa 1830. Handmade manuscript book with black and white hand-drawn illustrations 28 x 18cm 25 double-folded leaves four hole string binding title label upper cover. A little marginal browning and soiling consistent with use upper corners bumped lacks decorative paper over lower wrapper. This manuscript is a copy of Kojitsu kenpō 古實獻法 a work concerned with menu composition and the presentation of food for celebratory occasions tied to seasonal festivals including the New Year in January and the Girls’ Festival in March. The text is organised into seven sections comprising a total of one hundred items.<br><br>This copy was most likely produced in the late Edo period. A note on the final page states that the contents are secret and should not be transmitted to outsiders suggesting its use within a restricted or specialist context. <br><br>Several hand-drawn illustrations are included with the text showing in detail the arrangement and presentation of dishes and serving ware appropriate to these ceremonial occasions. . unknown

Light shelf wear miniscule damp spot to upper cover spine a shade darkened contemporary ownership signature to front free endpaper and bookplate to front pastedown late 20th-century bookseller's ticket to front pastedown else Very Good or better. Though first published in France in 1843 "Mon Oncle Benjamin" was not previously available to an English-speaking readership before individualist anarchist publisher Benjamin R. Tucker's translation which appeared just in time for Christmas 1890. The novel which is set in the last days of the reign of Louis XV and into that of the doomed Louis XVI recounts the exploits of a hapless doctor the eponymous Uncle Benjamin who takes poorly to the administering of medicine but excels at drinking and accruing unpaid debts. Like many novels Tucker chose to translate and publish "My Uncle Benjamin" is not overtly anarchist though as one early review notes "very little thought is given sometimes for the sensibilities of the pious or the delicate reader but with tender regard to the sacredness of human rights and feelings" from "The Brooklyn Daily Eagle" under the header "A Virile Old French Novel" December 28 1890. 8vo., Second Edition, with an engraved frontispiece, illustrated title in red and black, 6 fine wood-engraved plates FINELY COLOURED BY HAND and 26 engraved illustrations in the text, wanting front free endpaper, frontispiece and title lightly spotted; original pictorial red coarse-grain cloth, upper board elaborately blocked with multiple frame border in gilt and blind enclosing jester and title all in gilt, gilt back, gilt edges, bevelled boards, yellow endpapers, covers moderately age-soiled, corners scuffed, joints somewhat rubbed with one short tear, gathering cracked at F6-7 (but binding wholly sound) else a firm, tight copy. With Westley's binder's ticket on rear paste-down. Mackenzie's version of the German mediaeval classic was first published in 1860 as a Christmas volume, but stocks were swiftly exhausted and a second edition prepared to meet continuing demand. Mackenzie produced a lengthy additional preface to this second edition, attributing the success of the venture partly to 'the generous and unanimous verdict of the press' but also, surely, to the wonderful illustrations by 'Alfred Crowquill' (A.H. Forrester). Many would-be Christmas readers must have been disappointed for Mazkenzie dates his preface Christmas Eve, but scholars of mediaeval romance and fantasy will find this a most useful edition replete with extensive historical preface and bibliographical and other scholarly appendices. The US edition (T&F of Boston) of the same year is the first American edition of the tale in English. Scarce.

Anonymous abolitionist poem in a mid-nineteenth-century hand entitled 'The Fugitive Slave' with the first line: 'I'm weary yet I cannot sleep'. Apparently unpublished.
Without date or place. 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium on ruled laid paper. Fair: aged with a 12.5 x 5 cm section cut away from the top of the first leaf before the writing out of the poem. 63 lines divided into six nine-line stanzas. The stanzas are numbered and the poem is complete. The stanzas are numbered and the poem is complete. Written from the slave's point of view with the first stanza reading: 'I'm weary yet I cannot sleep Dark thoughts of morning make me weep For at the rising Sun I'm told I'll be converted into gold There's no escape I must be sold Because my master wants the gold And I'm his Slave yes I'm his Slave Because my master wants the gold And I'm his slave'. Last stanza describing the slave's flight to Canada: 'At last my dreadful journeys o'er I'm safe upon the farther shore St Georges cross floats over me I've found the land of Liberty. My youths renewed no more I'm old That fear is gone of being sold For now I'm Free Yes now I'm Free The fear is gone of being sold For now I'm Free.' Early Victorian Poem Long manuscript of an early Victorian poem entitled 'The last of the Hohen Stauffens' divided into three sections: 'Italy' 'The Morning of the Execution' and 'The Execution'. With a number of emendations and deletions.
Undated but on paper watermarked 1841 and docketed 'Written for Dublin about 1843'. Folio 11 pp. On the rectos of eleven leaves of Britannia paper watermarked 'W H FELLOWS 1841'. Held together with string. Text clear and complete. In ink with deletions and emendations in pencil. Good on aged paper. Docketed on reverse of last leaf. The subject of the poem is the execution of Conradine in the market square in Naples 29 October 1268. The first section 3 pp begins 'Italia fair Italia unto thee Was beauty given twice with misery At once the loveliest and the loveliest clime Thou wert the seat of Empire and of crime; .'. An alternative to the last line has been written in and deleted: 'Thy charms were only equalled by thy crime'. The second section 4 pp originally titled 'The Morning immediately before the Execution' begins At that sweet hour when twilight into day Dips her dark wing and mistlike fades away .'. It contains another poem deleted by the author entitled 'Good Bye & Farewell' beginning 'The thrilling whisper of "Good Bye" Thou not unmix'd with pain Seems to anticipate the joy Of meeting once again.' The third section 4 pp begins 'Close to the castle walls and just beneath A solemn scaffold rear'd its form of death While close around a dense and bristling mass Of soldiers occupied the meanest place; .'. The author is not named. It may be a coincidence but a review of M. E. Jeffreys 'Hoel the Hostage and other Poems' in the Metropolitan Magazine for June 1842 mentions that the volume contains a poem by this title one of a number of historical narratives 'replete with animation and descriptive spirit'. Very Good Arabic Original hand-colored map on tissue paper. 23x19 cm. In Ottoman script and Arabic. No scale. Manuscript notes of toponyms. The manuscript shows Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan, the Red Sea along the line of Red Sea shores. Manuscript notes show that the map was used for military purposes in the last Ottoman Imperial period. Habesh Eyalet, Ethiopia in northeast Africa was conquered by Özdemir Pasha in 1557. His son, Osman Pasha, transformed the region into an eyalet, which remained under Ottoman suzerainty until the early 19th century when Egypt assumed its administration. The manuscript shows Alexandria Port and the Palace of the King Farouk of Egypt, customs shores, ports and harbors, locations of the British ships, radio station, location of SS Ramlah, strait, Great Pass (?), waterfront for the lumber ships, sea current zones and probably entrance and exit routes etc. A very detailed map, decorated with ships. Some repairs with tape, tears, foxing and stains. Overall a good copy.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original b/w photograph. 12x8 cm. Manuscript descriptive text in Ottoman Turkish on verso. Dated 1949. "Kütahya'da Gaybî Baba'nin dedesi Kalburcu Çiftligi'nde medfûn Pîr Ahmed Besir. Kabri nakl olunurken. 1949.". Original photograph shows the transfer of Pir Ahmed Besir (A saint of Halwatiyya order)'s tomb and his bones in Kütahya city. He was the father of Müftî Dervish, the grandfather of Gaybî Baba. He was born in Kütahya. He is a member of the Çavdarogullari family, who settled in the Kalburcu village of Kütahya during the Germiyanoghuls period. He served for a long time a sufi named Cem Seyyah in Karaman, and received an 'ijazat' from Sünbül Sinan Efendi, the master of the Sünbüliyye branch of Halvetiyye sect in Istanbul. An interesting photograph showing his bones in his open tomb.

This anthology contains works by notable authors such as Orville Dewey one of Wordsworth's American friends. Dewey's essay "Practical Hints on Reading" advocates reading as a means of improving the lower classes. Harriet Beecher Stowe writes "A Sketch" juxtaposing a rich man with an ornate unread bible next to his bed with a poor woman with a well read penny edition of the bible. Too poor to buy wood she and her children huddle together and read the bible achieving a spiritual warmth. Once again reading for spiritual improvement and consolation is emphasized. S. G. Very Good German Original wrappers. 12mo. (16 x 11 cm). In German. 71, [1] p., [12] unnumbered b/w plates. Very rare first edition (from first 1st-5th thousand impressions and both in scarce institutional holdings and market rarity) of this fourth book of "A thousand and one nights" series, titled 'The Caliph Harun Al-Rashid' with fine illustrations edited by Heinrich Wolgast, (1860-1920), a German educator and pedagogue. Close to social democratic ideology, Heinrich Wolgast became known as a literary pedagogue. He criticized a "specific" juvenile literature which, as trivial mass literature, only satisfies the need for entertainment, and called for an artistic education of the youth through aesthetically demanding literature. In 1888 Wolgast became a co-founder of the "Youth Writings Committee" of the "Association of Hamburg Elementary School Teachers". As a co-founder of the "United German Examination Committees for Youth Writings", he acted from 1896 to 1912 as the editor of the magazine "Jugendschriften-Warte". This small and very collectible book published by Otto Zimmermann reflects the pedagogical concerns rather than the true harsh, erotic, and imaginary atmosphere of the Arabian Nights. Only one printed copy in OCLC 76105214 (German National Library, Leipzig = Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, Leipzig).

This is a beautiful production of Milton's immortal work. The printer Andrew Hoyem writes that this edition pays typographic tribute to two earlier editions of Milton's epic poem: the second edition of 1674 the year of Milton's death and the second Baskerville edition of 1759 which Hoyem owned and long admired. This edition is presented without explanatory footnotes and omits the Barrow and Marvell poems. However the earlier examples of textual scholarship prompted the press to obtain a new textual version and to provide an introduction written especially for this edition by the renowned scholar Helen Vendler that offers a fresh perspective on the work. Miltonist John T. Shawcross developed a modernized text. Bound in black cloth with a brown leather spine label with titling in gilt. Light sunning to spine and label. Printed Goudy Text and Baskerville types on special wove paper made for the press by the Zerkall mill in Germany. The arrangement of pages emulates those of the Baskerville edition but with significant differences as described in the colophon. Housed in a black cloth slipcase with a purple leather title label to spine. With a fleur de lis design on the front cover in light purple. Slipcase has evidence of handling and a shallow bump to the top edge. Overall in about fine condition in a very good slipcase. Does not include prospectus or portfolio. This copy is the standard edition and does not have the lithograph. Brautigan's early book published in 1967 became an instant cult classic. Richard Brautigan was a literary idol of the 1960s and '70s who came of age during the heyday of Haight-Ashbury and whose comic genius and iconoclastic vision of American life caught the imaginations of young people everywhere. Called "the last of the Beats" his early books became required reading for the hip generation and on its publication Trout Fishing in America became an international bestseller. The book was designed and produced by the Press under the direction of Andrew Hoyem. In the prospectus Hoyem describes is long friendship with Brautigan and how this book came to be published by his press. It is bound in gray cloth with a blue cloth backing with title in black to spine. The title and author name along with a whimsical illustration of a fish are on the front cover. Printed in Bookman type on Mohawk Superfine paper. The photographic portrait of the author was printed by Watermark Graphics in San Francisco. Accompanied by the prospectus. In fine condition. Light wear to the cloth some chipping to title labels bright strong and handsome; internally clean private library stamp to flyleaves cosmetic cracking to innner front joint of Vol I each plate with a captioned tissue guard and with general contents and title pages for the respective volumes bound in at the front of each volume thus the plate lists and explanatory matter are at the beginning of each volume and the larger bulk of the books is taken up with a wealth of plates and engravings; slight dampstaining to a couple of margins not affecting text or the outstanding quality of the plates. A very good clean set.<br /> <br /> A wildly enthusiastic and imposing collection of contemporary engravings and depictions of notable characters from popular literature executed by important artists and illustrators. Work by Landseer Doré Gerome and an army of others depicting characters from Dickens Coleridge the Greek Myths and just about every literary fandom from the 19th century and earlier. Catalog and promotional packet for low-cost color reprodcutions marketed primarily as educational aides and intended for sale to schools churches and individuals. The catalog features small samples of the pictures in black and white as many as 75 to a page with product numbers and a handful of larger reproductions one in color. Images include European and American master paintings portraits of famous people sculpture historical landmarks and natural history for use in the classroom or home. A large selection of religious artwork and iconography is depicted as well. Additional material related to the "Course in Picture Study" consisting of pictures accompanied by educational text. Wraps. 7.5" x 9" appox. saddle-stapled catalog in wraps. Punched through at top left corner and strung with blue cord. Wraps lightly toned with wear near staples. Interior generally clean and bright.
