Sinn Féin newspaper edited by Arthur Griffith Typewritten draft of circular letter
Undated c.1905. Typewritten draft of circular letter with corrections appealing for support for Griffith’s Sinn Féin newspaper and giving details concerning its foundation. Typescript 3pp 4to good condition. Author and recipient not stated. Undated but from the context written in 1906. It begins We desire to bring under your notice the following facts respecting the "Sinn Fein" daily newspaper’ and says that Griffith and the directors stated that ‘a sum of £8000 was required for the purpose’ but that the sum of £3300 only was subscribed in answer to the appeal. The Board decided to proceed with the establishment of the paper notwithstanding that the amount was so far short of that required. The paper commenced its tenth week on 1st corrected in manuscript from ‘2nd.’ November. The entire plant – exclusive of linotypes which are always hired is the property of the Company. The plant – in addition to the Linotupes sic includes a Victory machine which fortunately was acquired for a very small sum a fine stereo plant and type. The result is that the Company have now got a nice compact plant for the purposes required. . There are in England a large number of Irishmen of means who are interested in Ireland and who are anxious to do all in their power to financial support sic the new movements. To them it will be apparent that the principal support of the new movement will be a daily paper and who if the fats sic are brought before them would readily provide the monetary help required. It proposes a ‘Meeting in support of "Sinn Fein" paper’ and requesting that the reader subscribe directly ‘owing to the size of London’. From the Papers of Robert and Sylvia Lynd. [ASSEMBLY OF THE FRENCH CLERGY]
Uncut stitched as issued. Edges a trifle dusty else clean and crisp. A printing of extracts from the minutes of the Assembly of the French clergy in 1765 a meeting most notable for reiterating the episcopacy's defence of it's exemption from taxation; a statement that from a Jansenist perspective amounted to a revocation of the Declaration of 1682 which had codified the principles of Gallicanism. The tensions bolstered by this corruption of Gallicanist fundamentals together with increased opposition to monarchical absolutism would pave the road to the Revolution - an ultimately the nationalisation of all ecclesiastical property. . 8vo. [Australia's Fighting Sons of the Empire]
Australia's Fighting Sons of the Empire. Portraits and Biographies of Australians in the Great War
Sydney: B. Jackson & Co 1919. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair. Sydney B. Jackson & Co. 1919. Large quarto 387 1 colophon pages with over 1500 portrait illustrations from photographs - but it may lack one leaf pages 9/10 - see below. Crocodile-pattern cloth a little worn and bumped at the extremities; signs of age and use; overall a decent copy. Loosely inserted is a large 'Roll of Honour' printed recto only now a little worn: it carries service details of four members of the Stagg family from Inverell 745 Corporal Fred L. Staggs; 565 Private Neil Oswald Staggs; 744 Private Andrew Edward Staggs; and Private George Henry Staggs with a group portrait illustration of three of them. Unusually the biographical entries in the book are grouped together by the places the men came from although this is useful in a parochial sense and there are many family groups. With very few exceptions all the men commemorated here appear to come from northern NSW and southern Queensland but not Brisbane indicating that this was the area canvassed for contributions. We have previously handled a copy of this work which contained an index to these place-names and the contents were 'arranged' thus - unfortunately in no particular order other than NSW first pages 11-332 Queensland last pages 333-383. NSW commences with Grafton and ends with Maitland with latecomers from all areas listed after that. However this copy has no index and we suspect it was on the errant leaf noted above. The publication date is ascertained from the 'Lismore Northern Star' of 21 May 1919 which carries an advertisement from the publishers advising their many subscribers that the book would be delivered that month.
Not in Dornbusch; not in Fielding and O'Neill. 'Royal Mint Melbourne Australia / 21 May 1875'. Barton who was born in London joined the Royal Mint’s Melbourne branch as one of two assayers on its opening in 1869; in 1887 he was promoted to Superintendent and in 1895 to Deputy Master holding that position until his reitrement in 1904. See his entry in the Encyclopaedia of Australian Science and Innovation. In case Barton has misspelled the name the recipient may be William Dawson Grubb 1817-1879 or his son Frederick William Grubb 1844-1923 who have a joint-entry in the Australian Dictionary of National Biography. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. Signed ‘Robert Barton’. In very good condition lightly aged and folded twice for postage. Begins: ‘Dear Grubbe / I met the writer of the enclosed letter not present after you left & he told me that between us we could not have advised you to go to a worse place for the sport you want than Echuca I feel therefore that I have been instrumental although far from my intention in leading you a wild duck chase.’ He has been informed by ‘Singleton’ that ‘there are very few Kangaroo if any near Echuca & the duck are impossible to get near’. He suggests that Grubbe takes the steamer to Albury and proceeds as Singleton directs ‘& you are in a country abounding with Kangaroo & splendid duck shooting’. Barton is enclosing a note from his friend ‘to his brother who is managing the “Walla Walla†station’ and whom Grubbe will find ‘a very decent fellow. He is a batchelor sic I believe living in a large house. Ask at Albury if you are anywhere near Tumbarumba Caves because if so they are one of the finest sights of the Colonies.’ Barton wishes he had known this information before Grubbe left ‘as then you might have gone to Albury via the new line but if you elect to go from Echuca you will at all events see the river Murray’. [Beda the Venerable] (Pseudo-Bede)
Repertorium auctoritatum Aristotelis et aliorum philosophorum. Add: Auctoritates Ciceronis. Repertorium siue tabula generalis auctoritatum Arestotelis cum commento per modum alphabeti et philosophorum.
Nürnberg Nuremberg: Peter Wagner 1491. First edition. Spine rubbed with minor wear to corners. Bound in a later half-leather binding spine with gilt fillets; buckram-covered boards. Bookplate of Joseph Prill presumably the German theologian and scholar 1852-1935 on the inner front board. Spine rubbed with minor wear to corners. First and last leaves reinforced probably at the time the present binding was made. 19th-century shelf marks and pencil annotations on the pastedown; old collection stamp on the title page and the date "1490" added in pencil. Occasional early marginal annotations throughout. Some light browning mostly marginal. Complete and internally sound overall a very good copy. Title page with full page woodcut illustration. Title page with full page woodcut illustration. First edition. Spine rubbed with minor wear to corners. Bound in a later half-leather binding spine with gilt fillets; buckram-covered boards. 4to. a-m8 n10 = 106 unnumbered leaves.

One of only three incunable editions transmitted under the name of Bede combining a late medieval scholastic core with a humanist Ciceronian addendum.

The Repertorium auctoritatum Aristotelis traditionally attributed to Bede the Venerable is an alphabetically arranged florilegium of philosophical auctoritates. It consists of brief excerpts drawn primarily from Aristotle each accompanied by a short explanatory or paraphrastic comment. Conceived as a practical tool for reference and instruction it was well suited to late medieval scholastic teaching and preaching. The attribution to Bede is made explicit on the opening page which states "a reverendissimo et venerabili Beda presbitero edita" a formulation that contributed to the work's long-standing acceptance under his authorship.

The title page is illustrated with a full-page woodcut depicting a scholastic lecture scene showing a master reading at a lectern before a group of students visually underscoring the book's pedagogical function. The main scholastic compilation is followed by the appended Auctoritates Ciceronis introduced separately and preceded by a dedicatory epistle to Sebald Schreyer by Peter Danhauser and the volume concludes with a short Latin poem functioning as a conventional closing piece.

The Aristotelian material is presented without distinction between authentic and spurious works a feature characteristic of medieval Aristotelian transmission. Aristotle is treated as a unified authority without philological discrimination. Alongside him the compilation draws extensively on other philosophical auctoritates notably Boethius Avicenna Averroes and Porphyry with Seneca also cited particularly in moral contexts. In later manuscript and printed traditions Senecan material becomes increasingly prominent.

The present Nuremberg edition printed by Peter Wagner was prepared under the direction of Peter Danhauser of Nuremberg an editor and organizer of learned texts active in the 1490s and connected with the humanist and scholarly circles of Nuremberg and Vienna including Hartmann Schedel Conrad Celtis and Sebald Schreyer see Worstbrock. In this edition Danhauser appended the humanist Auctoritates Ciceronis to the scholastic Repertorium. This Ciceronian section is introduced by the standard preface praising Cicero as studii humanitatis maximus cultor taken verbatim from Albrecht von Eyb's Margarita poetica and is preceded by a dedicatory epistle addressed to Sebald Schreyer church administrator of St. Sebald and a prominent Nuremberg patron. In the dedication Danhauser presents the Ciceronian excerpts as a moral and pedagogical aid for students and young readers and frames the addition as a humanist offering connected to Schreyer's cultural and bibliophilic activity. The Repertorium was later reissued without the Ciceronian appendix and continued to circulate independently into the sixteenth century.

Bede the Venerable ca. 673-735 an Anglo-Saxon monk of Wearmouth-Jarrow was among the most influential scholars of the early Middle Ages best known for the Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum and numerous biblical and chronological works. Modern scholarship has demonstrated that the attribution of the Repertorium to Bede is untenable: its reliance on Aristotelian texts Arabic commentators such as Avicenna and Averroes and later scholastic authorities places its composition firmly in the late Middle Ages. The work is therefore regarded as Pseudo-Bede.

This book is one of only three known incunable editions transmitted under the name of Bede the Venerable. According to the Incunabula Short Title Catalogue ISTC these comprise the Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum and two editions of the Repertorium: the present first edition which includes the appended Auctoritates Ciceronis and the later Cologne edition issued by Quentell in 1495. Although the Repertorium is now recognized as a pseudo-Bedan work it nonetheless belongs to this strictly delimited incunable corpus and occupies a defined position within the earliest printed tradition of works attributed to Bede offering a clear example of late medieval scholastic compilation with a limited humanist overlay.

Scarce. ISTC records 45 surviving copies of which only four are held in the United Kingdom Glasgow University Library; British Library; Wellcome Collection imperfect; Bodleian Library Oxford and three in the United States Southern Methodist University Bridwell Library; University of Rochester Rush Rhees Library; Library of Congress. With the exception of the present copy no other example appears to have been offered for sale according to Rare Book Hub RBH.

References: ISTC ib00294000; Goff B-294; HC 2733 = H 1926; GW 3757; Klebs 164.1; Grabmann M. 2022.
