Photocopies of all 23 issues bound in eight volumes four octavo two oblong octavo and two quarto printed rectos only; some oversized leaves folded. Contrasting red and black leather with the black strip along the leading edge of each volume lettered and tooled in gilt; covers lightly rubbed bumped and marked; short tears to the edges of a few of the oversized leaves; overall in excellent condition. A unique xerographic facsimile of this scarce journal in a handsome binding apparently commissioned for presentation to Barrett Barrie Reid editor of the journal for much of its short run. Reid's copies of 'Barjai' had been lost when his house was destroyed by a bushfire in 1978 and friends had this run produced and bound from originals in the Oxley Library Brisbane. <p>'In 1943 Barrett Reid and Laurence Collinson were completing their high school education at Brisbane State High School South Brisbane. Concerned that Australia's youth were not adequately represented by contemporary literary magazines they founded the "Senior Tabloid". Five issues later the name was changed to "Barjai" a magazine offering a publishing opportunity exclusively to writers under the age of twenty-one. Initially a small type-written publication "Barjai" was professionally printed from 1944 going through several changes of size in its short life. <p>Reid and Collinson attracted an enthusiastic group of young writers to "Barjai" organising regular meetings at the Lyceum Club where guest speakers such as Judith Wright Tom Inglis Moore and Paul Grano were heard. At these meetings members were also given the opportunity to read and discuss their own work. To encourage new work writing competitions were conducted employing judges such as C.B. Christesen and Rex Ingamells. <p>In addition to Reid and Collinson other contributors to "Barjai" included Grace Perry Thea Astley Cecel Knopke Barbara Patterson and Mary Wilkinson. The age of each contributor was clearly displayed and the range of ages often appeared in editorial comment. An idea of the poetic influences on this group of young writers is revealed in the poll conducted to find the most popular poets of their subscribers. The top three were Christopher Brennan Percy Bysshe Shelley and Robert Browning. The only other Australian writers included among a large group of English poets were Rex Ingamells and John Shaw Neilson. But despite the popularity of poets who employed traditional forms "Barjai" welcomed and encouraged experimentation. <p>By 1946 the energy of the "Barjai" group was beginning to weaken. Laurence Collinson had moved to Sydney and others had left for teaching posts outside of Brisbane. In addition "Barjai" experienced fiscal difficulties when the long-term financial support of the medical practitioner and patron of the arts Dr J.V. Duhig was withdrawn after he experienced tax problems. Unable to afford production costs the editors reverted to a less expensive broadsheet format for the twenty-third number. But after failing to pay the printer for this number "Barjai" faltered winding up production in 1947' AustLit. 8 items. hardcover‎

‎1920s transatlantic ocean liner: RMS Transylvania cruise ship with the Anchor Line. Long Typed Letter from ‘Alex’ to his parents written en route from Glasgow to New York with account and diagrams of a sea rescue and postcard of the liner.‎

‎Letter from 'S. S. Transylvania' en route from Glasgow to New York 24 26 and 29 November 1928. Postcard undated but contemporaneous. TSS Transylvania the prefix stands for ‘Twin Screw Steamship’ was built in Glasgow for the Anchor Line and launched in 1925. She had three funnels but two were redundant only serving to render the ship more attractive to prospective passengers. In 1940 she requisitioned by the Royal Navy and the following year she was torpedoed by the Germans sinking with the loss of 36 lives. The letter is 13pp 12mo; with neat single-space typing on thirteen leaves. It contains three line diagrams and on a separate 12mo leaf is an ink drawing with captions titled ‘As the Herrewich sic appeared when we last saw her’. Also present is a sepia postcard of ‘T.S.S. TRANSYLVANIA’. The letter and diagram are in fair condition aged and worn but with text clear and entire. The postcard is good with light aging. Signed in type ‘Alex.’ With manuscript diagrams and salutation to ‘Dear Mother and Father’. A well written missive the use of catch-words implies a good education beginning: ‘It is surprising that now more than five days after leaving Glasgow we should be only about 1000 miles from home. The explanation is probably well known to you all: but although you will have had newspaper accounts of the great storm and of the wreck we stood by I’m quite sure that some amplifications in the form of our personal experiences will be both welcome and of interest. In the first place let me hasten to assure you that none of us came to any harm. In the main we are all well. Mary has not been able to be out of bed much so far but on the other hand she has been free from sickness - which is a very remarkable thing considering our experiences.’ After news of ‘Anne’ and ‘Virginia’ ‘Mary’ and ‘Aunt Mima’ are also referred to he reports that they ‘arrived at Moville about midnight on Monday and spent a great night in Lough Foyle. At 10.00 o’clock next morning the Londonderry tender came alongside and we took 350 passengers and their baggage on board - making the total passenger compliment about 1100. There are about 25 in the first class.’ He finds the Transylvania ‘a splendid ship for watching the sea from. The forward extension of B. deck in front of the bridge is very clear of truck and there are no boats on it as there are on the others’. The account of the journey continues followed by a seven-page account of the storm and rescue beginning: ‘In the evening of Tuesday it was apparent that the sea was rising higher and higher as was the wind: and through the night it was obvious that something unusual in the way of weather was blowing up. / Now I’ve thought previously that we have been in Atlantic storms before. Two years ago on the “Cameronia†was a bad time: and one day last year the “Caledonia†was thrown about considerably: but our in pencil ‘my’ farthest stretch of imagination - even my wildest fears - have never pictured anyting so in pencil ‘as’ tremendous as we awoke in pencil ‘the situation’ to on Wednesday morning.’ He gives a vivid description of the ship ‘riding out the storm magnificently’ as he is caught by ‘plants flowerpots chairs and so on’: ‘The second and third class passengers were locked in and battened down for about two days. The stern of the ship was almost completely under water and the hatchways to the steward’s quarters were stove in during the night and all the stewards woke up to find themselves invaded by a foot or two of water.’ The storm subsides and she comes across the wreck of a ‘large German tramp’ he calls the ‘Herrenwich’ ‘a poignant and pathetic spectacle; and more so was the view we had of the hapless crew clinging to what was left on the bare decks. We gradually got the story bit by bit as it filtered through the bridge where it was picked up I suppose by signals. A great wave had landed on the “Herrenwich†and had stove in the hatch of No. 3 hold on the forward well deck. This hold was full of water and the restraining bulkheads were bulging. The captain sent out his S. O. S. and immediately there - after another sea came on board and carried off bodily the bridge the wireless the wireless room and all the boats save one which was stove in. The captain and a quartermaster were swept overboard with the bidge and were lost immediately.’ He describes ‘a masterly exposition magnificently executed of the tactics of sea rescue. It was obviously impossible to go right up to the ship but sometimes we were not more than 100 yards away and communication by megaphone was possible. It was equally impossible for us simply to take up a position on the nether side and so act as a breakwater. The manoeuvre which was carried out time after time therefore was to circle the wreck as quickly as possible and to drift past her on the weather side and so give her a certain degree of intermittent protection. This meant that twice in every circuit the captain had to bring the “Transylvania†broadside on to the seas and every time this happened there came the sickening sense of going over on our beam ends - as I believe many less seaworthy and splendid ships would have done. And each time of course until everything was secured anything movable was thrown about in the wildest way. Oil was poured on the water with each circuit and the difference it made was wonderful.’ The seven-page account of the storm and rescue ends with the information that ‘the bridge is 62 feet from the waterline and when we were in the trough 19 out of every 20 waves were seen to be on a level with or higher than the bridge’. It reflects: ‘I’ve often told myself that I wanted to experience a real Atlantic storm. Now I have experienced it. I’d like it again but never again would I like to take Mary and the children into it.’ The letter finishes with two two-page updates from 26 and 29 November the last beginning with the information that the ship has ‘passed Nantucket light ship and may therefore expect to reach quarantine to-night’. It shows Mecca city with its building like Kaba, and walls besides its environment. Mecca is a city in the Hejazi region of Saudi Arabia. The city is located 70 km (43 mi) inland from Jeddah, in a narrow valley 277 m (909 ft) above sea level, 340 kilometres (210 mi) south of Medina, its population in 2012 was 2 million, although visitors more than triple this number every year during the ?ajj ("Pilgrimage"), held in the twelfth Muslim lunar month of Dhûl-Hijjah. It is the birthplace of Muhammad, a cave 3 km (2 mi) from Mecca was the site of Muhammad's first revelation of the Quran, and a pilgrimage to it, known as the Hajj, is obligatory for all able Muslims. Mecca is home to the Kaaba, one of Islam's holiest sites and the direction of Muslim prayer, and thus Mecca is regarded as the holiest city in Islam.‎

‎On letterhead of The London Steam Omnibus Company Limited 133 Finsbury Pavement London EC. July 1898. 2pp. 4to. Bifolium. Heavily-aged and worn. Addressed 'Dear Sir' and with facsimile of signature 'For the London Steam Omnibus Co. Ltd. A. Flemg Nisbett Secretary.' The circular begins with the reason for sending an advance copy of the prospectus. 'My object in giving you this early intimation is that you may if you desire secure beforehand a Founder's Share in the profits of the coming Steam Traffic upon the Roads - which Traffic appears likely to become one day as popular as Steam on Railways'. The circular continues: 'Parliament has now sanctioned this new system of locomotion and a faster and better Omnibus than the Horse Vehicles now runnign - working at far less cost - is now in the hands of this Company.' It continues by stressing the secure nature of 'the business of London Omnibuses' with reference to the 'present weekly returns'. A postscript deals with the details of subscription. In October 1899 the Company having changed its name to the Motor Traction Company commenced services between Kennington and Victoria via Westminster; the following year the route changed to Oxford Circus to Kennington; and in December 1900 it was withdrawn. Baykurt was a Turkish politician and soldier who served as deputy of first period of the Turkish Republican Parliament. He was first minister of Turkish foreign affairs in the Republican period. He participated as an officer in the Battle of Tripoli. The province of Tripoli and Fizan were accepted as places of exile in the last period of the Ottoman Empire. This tractate was previously serialized in Efham newspaper. "Future of Ottomanism". Ottomanism was a concept which developed prior to the First Constitutional Era of the Ottoman Empire. Its proponents believed that it could solve the social issues that the empire was facing. It was strongly influenced by thinkers such as Montesquieu and Rousseau and the French Revolution. It promoted equality among the millets. The idea originated amongst the Young Ottomans in areas such as the acceptance of all separate ethnicities in the Empire regardless of their religion, i.e. they were all 'Ottomans' with equal rights. Put simply, Ottomanism stated that all subjects were equal before the law. Ideally, all citizens would share a geographical area, a language, culture, and a sense of a 'non-Ottoman' party who were different than them. The essence of the millet system was not dismantled, but secular organizations and policies were applied. Primary education, conscription, head tax and military service were to be applied to non-Muslims and Muslims alike. The major precursors to Ottomanism were the Reformation Edict of 1856, which promised full equality regardless of religion, and the Ottoman Nationality Law of 1869, which created a common Ottoman citizenship irrespective of religious or ethnic affiliation. Ottomanism was rejected by many in the non-Muslim millets and by many Muslims. To the former, it was perceived as a step towards dismantling their traditional privileges. Meanwhile, the Muslims saw it as the elimination of their own superior position. There were claims that Ottomanism was a reaction to the Tanzimat, the era of intensive restructuring of the Ottoman Empire by the bureaucratic elite. The inauguration of the Ottoman Parliament contributed to the spirit of reform as all millets were represented in this bicameral assembly. Ottomanism was a form of nationalism, likely inspired and created as a reaction to European ideas of nationalism and the growing Western involvement in the Ottoman Empire. Ottomanism enjoyed a revival during the Young Turk Revolution of 1908, and during the Second Constitutional Era. It lost most of its adherents during the First Balkan War of 1912-13, when the Ottoman Empire lost most of its European territories inhabited by Christian minorities and large number of Muslims fled from those areas while many Christians fled from the remaining Ottoman territories. A document produced by the Society for Mitigating and Gradually Abolishing the State of Slavery throughout the British Dominions better known as the Anti-Slavery Society. The group was founded in London in 1823 by a group of politicians philanthropists and businessmen including William Wilberforce Joseph Sturge and Zachary Macaulay. The document discusses the horrors of enslavement—even unfavorably comparing the British colonies’ conditions with those in the US—and decries the fact that after the 1807 Slave Trade Act essentially nothing more had been done to put “an end to a condition of society which so grievously outrages every feeling of humanityâ€.
