Fragment of a Latin Breviary Leaf with Texts from the Legend of Saint Cecilia and Bede’s Homilia LXXI.
Southern France or Northern Italy late 13th century. Manuscript on vellum. Written space approx. 65 × 95 mm; overall leaf size ca. 90 × 125 mm. Text in two sizes of gothic textualis written in dark brown ink rubrics in red. Reused as binding waste with rectangular cut-outs consistent with sewing support slots for an early modern binding. Trimmed at one side with staining worming and losses to the text yet the passages are largely legible and the text could be identified. Manuscript on vellum. Written space approx. 65 × 95 mm; overall leaf size ca. 90 × 125 mm. Text in two sizes of gothic textualis written in dark brown ink rubrics in red. Bifolium; 4 pages. <p><br /> Unusual 13th-century breviary fragment combining the legend of Saint Cecilia with Bede’s All Saints’ Day homily.<br /> <p><p><br /> A small-format bifolium from a Latin breviary preserving a liturgical reading cycle that interweaves the Historia passionis sanctae Caeciliae virginis with Bede’s Homilia LXXI. In solemnitate Omnium Sanctorum. The texts are copied in a compact formal book hand with smaller rubricated insertions and interlinear additions in a secondary notula script. The size layout and script suggest a portable breviary produced for monastic or private devotion.<br /> <p><p><br /> The Cecilia text includes familiar episodes from the Latin Passio including Angelum Dei habeo amatorem Haec Valerianum quendam iuvenem habebat sponsum and Cantantibus organis along with the insertion Domine Iesu Christe seminator casti consilii. These segments appear in the form typical of liturgical readings not continuous narrative.<br /> <p><p><br /> Interwoven is a significant portion of Bede’s Homilia LXXI. In eadem solemnitate Omnium Sanctorum traditionally read on the feast of All Saints which begins: Laudem Domini qui superna caelorum regna spiritibus angelicis… While the Cecilia passages derive from the broader Passio tradition textual features show alignment with versions known from homiliaries. This direct juxtaposition of Cecilia’s passion with Bede’s theological reflections is unusual: we could not locate another surviving breviary containing both texts in this combination suggesting a regionally specific reading order or a customized compilation.<br /> <p><p><br /> Saint Cecilia one of the most venerated Roman martyrs was revered from the early Middle Ages as the patron saint of music virginity and spiritual marriage. Her Passio though apocryphal in parts circulated widely and was integrated into liturgical use by the 9th century. The Homiliae of Bede ca. 673–735 particularly those for major feasts remained standard reading in monastic contexts for centuries. The presence of both in this fragment suggests a breviary or homiliary adapted to a community with a particular devotion to Cecilia and access to Bede’s homiletic corpus.<br /> <p><p><br /> The script—a regular and angular gothic textualis with looped ascenders and clubbed minims—is consistent with manuscripts produced in southern France or northern Italy in the latter half of the 13th century. The rubricated initials and the textualis–notula script pairing support the same dating.<br /> <p>. unknown

Volume one with an engraved title page and its title page printed in red and black also with several in-text woodcuts and charts. Campbell "Bede St Bede Bæda known as the Venerable Bede 673/4–735". This edition was first published in Cologne in 1612 these volumes are the second edition printed there. Saint Bede is remembered for his contributions to ecclesiastical and British historical writings. Bede wrote analytically and was fascinated by time and the creation of life as they were written about in early Christian sources. The sources available to him included Eusebius of Caesarea Orosius Eutropius and the earlier British historian Gildas. Historians label his Historia Ecclesiastica Anglis Gentorum as the greatest culmination of his writings and some point out that it helped to create the sense of a national English identity at a time when the Angles and the Saxons were still forging intertribal unity. His history of Christianity in Britain largely focuses on the years 597-731 after a brief explanation of Christianity in Roman-controlled Britain. Bede wrote in his own autobiography that his life was devoted to "learning and letters" and he was well-beloved in his own time and long after including by Britain's first king Alfred which is largely why most of his work survives today. His translations of various religious histories and lives of the Saints into Latin made these works accessible to his fellow monks and Bede even did an Old English translation of St. John's Gospel which had it survived would be the earliest lengthy work of prose in English. Bede was an author who was influenced greatly by the writers of Late Antiquity and his career is one of the most significant among those who wrote during the early Middle Ages. With a small later bookplate and an 18th century ownership mark Signet Library on each front pastedown. No other institutional markings. The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was founded in 1826 in London and the Library of Useful Knowledge was its first series of publications launched in 1827. The goal of the society was to publish useful information in a manner affordable to working class individuals unable to pursue formal studies or who simply preferred self-education. The grant is described over seventeen lines the land referred to in the document being in the 'County of Fayette on the Main fork at Licking'. Oxford: John Baskett 1717. First Edition Thus. Royal binding in full morocco. Very Good. John Sturt. Two volumes in one. Large stout folio. Double column with columns separated by double rule. Text ruled in red and title pages printed in red and black. Engraved vignette title pages for Old and New Testaments the latter dated 1716. With the engraved additional general title page by cartographer and renowned illustrator John Sturt 1658–1730. With striking copper-engraved vignette head- and tail-pieces and many engraved historiated initials. Complete with Apocrypha.<p>Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Bound in contemporary full black morocco rebacked with original elaborate gilt-tooled spine neatly laid-down gilt-tooled arms of King George II featuring the motto "Most Noble Order of the Garter" as centerpieces and his monogram in spine compartments raised bands and gilt-decorated borders. Only moderate wear to the splendidly complete royal binding. First edition of the monumental illustrated "Vinegar Bible" with additional title page engraved by John Sturt including the vignette of a church interior featuring the figures of Moses Aaron et al. per Darlow and Moule. According to the DNB Sturt "specialized in miniature work and it was said that he could engrave the creed on a silver penny but could also work on a large scale and in 1692 he produced a notable engraving of Britannia the royal first capital ship of England printed on four sheets". Presented in a handsome King George II armorial binding. Carter notes that " . Bibles with the royal arms may have come from one of the Royal Chapels - but they may equally have come from any loyal parish church" ABC p. 157. That said a limited print run coupled with the high cost of Baskett's elaborate opus would suggest the former.<p>In 1709 printer John Baskett secured the exclusive royal patent to print Bibles in England. Of those he and his family published this is the most magnificent being a triumph of legible elegant type that contributes to an easy readability accessible today. Alas a typographical error in the running head of Luke XX among other typos rendered the parable of the vineyard as the "parable of the vinegar" overshadowing Baskett's magnificent achievement.<p>A scarce and stately copy of a high spot in 18th-century printing. Twenty-fourmo size 28 pp. The Saint Dominic's Press founded by Harry Hilary Douglas Clarke Pepler flourished at Ditchling Sussex from 1916 to 1936. The first home of the Press was "a disused stable" with a hundred-year-old Stanhope hand-press which supposedly had belonged to William Morris. Pepler endeavored to do everything possible by hand believing that such would both produce the best results and also be a "more individual or 'humane'.product". He therefore "preferred the handpress to the machine handmade to machine-made paper and handset founder's type to the products of typesetting machines." N.b. quotes and information from "Three Private Presses" by Brocard Sewell. <br /> <br /> Per Taylor and Sewell "The Welfare Handbooks were a series of pamplets mainly concerned with social questions written from a Distributist and Roman Catholic standpoint." This volume contains scriptural passages pertaining to the age-old question of the relative merits of wealth vs. poverty vis-a-vis one's relationship with God. Early 18th century calf gilt-stamped lettering in red leather spine label gilt-stamped ornament in spine compartments 5 raised bands; 16mo 146x93mm; pp. 20 98 plus engraved frontispiece and 62 engraved plates 4 folding. Some light chipping along joints; light scuffing at spine tips and along edges of boards; front joint tender. Frontispiece and one folding plate with discreetly repaired tears; otherwise internally nice and clean. An excellent copy with an interesting provenance -- Bibliothèque Deprins bookplate; Hippolyte Destailleur 1822-1893 French architect bookplate and mss note tipped-in. <br/><br/>William III of Orange 1650-1702 King of England Scotland and Ireland entered The Hague on 5 February 1691 to spectacular celebration decoration and pomp. Numerous triumphal arches and pyramids were erected throughout the city illuminations of the city's public buildings were designed and a fireworks display was arranged for the evening of the King's arrival. The plates illustrate the arches pyramids emblems and the the fireworks show and several represent scenes of victory from the King's life including sea battles sieges and treaties. Although the plates are unsigned some have been attributed by Vinet to Adriaan Schoonebeck and Romeyn de Hooghe but 16 plates are by Jan Luyken; an English edition was published in London in 1692. Watanabe attributes the text to Bidloo but all other bibliographers leave it anonymous. It is most likely that these descriptions of the plates were supplied by the print publisher Barent Beek himself. Mafeking Townshend & Son 1899 and 1900. 111 issues various sizes see below printed on paper of many different colours and of varying quality often poor with 43 printed as a broadsheet the balance printed recto and verso with three early numbers folded and issued as bifolia. Unbound as issued; some loss primarily owing to the poor quality of some of the paper; however these extraordinary artefacts produced under siege conditions are of the utmost rarity in any condition. All issues in this run are now housed in individual Mylar pockets sealed on two sides only for easy access. A detailed list including the number date colour of paper length and condition of each issue is included with the lot. Dr Robin Pelteret has published his impressive research notes on 'The Mafeking Mail Special Siege Slips' online. He sets the scene: 'Mafeking lies 1392 kilometres north of Cape Town and 298 kilometres west of Johannesburg. It was first settled in the early 1850s. From the early 1860s it became a centre of squabbling and outright fighting between the Transvaal Republic the Baralong the Goshen Republic the British South Africa Company and the British Empire. <p>By the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War it was a robust "dorp" with some 1500 European citizens a group of Indian and oriental background and 5000 Baralong. It was a major rail junction with a station and railway workshops; a significant commercial centre and boasted a number of substantial buildings including two schools two churches a Standard Bank a Masonic Lodge a newspaper building a public library the Victoria Hospital and St Joseph's Convent Irish Sisters of Mercy. <p>The Siege of Mafeking was conducted between 14 October 1899 and 17 May 1900 that is 217 days and began 3 days after the declaration of war by the Transvaal Republic. It involved British and Colonial Forces under the command of Brevet-Colonel Robert Stephenson Smythe Baden-Powell the besieged and Boer Forces ab initio under the command General Piet Arnoldus Cronje and later Kommandant Sarel Eloff the besiegers'. <p>The precursor to the siege issues of 'The Mafeking Mail' was the 'Mafeking Mail and Protectorate Guardian' in its infancy when the siege was imposed. Number 22 the last full edition was published on Saturday 14 October 1899 the first day of the siege; a Special Siege Edition Number 23 was dated Saturday 21 October 1899 but headed 'reprinted on 23 October 1899'. <p>On 1 November 1899 a fortnight after the beginning of the siege the first of the famous siege issues was published 'Issued Daily Shells Permitting. Only Terms One Shilling Per Week Payable in Advance'. <p>'They were to be numbered 1 to 152 of which 143 minus Numbers 45 and 56 appeared during the actual siege. The newspaper contained snippets of information - both parochial and national General Orders and advertisements. Actually we have found them to be far more dramatic and engaging than this bland description implies especially reading these issues that were purchased day by day during the siege and have survived to this day. However we digress . In Mafeking there was to exist a fragile peace between the publisher and editor of the "Mafeking Mail Special Siege Slip" G.H.N. Whales and the military authorities. Whales was somewhat acerbic of tongue. He once publicly thanked the press censor for saving his life a boer shell having destroyed his editorial chair whilst he was submitting his newspaper copy for military scrutiny elsewhere in the village. He was to be briefly imprisoned on one occasion for publishing querulous criticism on the conduct of the siege and the restrictions put on the availability of news. In protest he was known to publish empty columns No. 47 and indeed cancelled one whole edition No. 45 as visible disregard and mute testimony to the censor's liberal use of a blue pencil.' <p>Dr Pelteret has established 'there are three different printings which appeared as four "editions"'. He surmises that by the time Number 6 came to press 'the commercial value to the printers of "The Mafeking Mail Siege Slips" had been discerned . and a substantial "overrun" allowed and set aside for later sale'. Indeed in Number 151 dated 30 May 1900 'there was an offer to make up sets at 30/- each of the Nos. 1-147 for "delivery July next" . They were issued soon after the lifting of the siege . cardboard-bound into two books of differing sizes and held together with metal staples'. <p>The current run comprises Numbers 1 and 2 both second issue 'on sale soon after 22 November 1899' 6 with the word 'Only' in the masthead 7-8 10-60 but 45 and 56 were not published 62-68 70 77-79 83-84 97-98 100 102 104 106 107-109 111-127 129-141 and 144-148. Sizes vary considerably: the first 30 or so are approximately 380 × 255 mm; most of the last 40 or so are approximately 340 × 200 mm; for the rest they range from one issue at 255 × 155 mm to several at 375 × 500 mm. There are easily ten different colours of paper often acidic and now prone to brittleness; a handful have peen printed on recycled ledger paper pre-printed with columns in red or blue. <p>'Petticoat in Mafeking. The Letters of Ada Cock' edited and published by John F. Midgley Kommetjie 1974 contains 57 letters now extensively annotated written during the siege. The letters 'were addressed to her elder sister Emily Empy Fuller née Franklin. Emily's husband Harry James Fuller was the owner of the cattle ranch "Oaklands" which was situated a few miles outside of Mafeking and was managed by his brother-in-law Willie Cock Ada's husband. Under the threat of possibly hostilities Willie and his wife moved into Mafeking and its environs with all their stock at the beginning of October 1899. They also took with them four young children Eileen Tooky Liell Vaughan and Baby Ada' introduction page 1. In the earliest surviving letter dated 12 October Ada writes that 'Willie . will . join the B.R. Bechuanaland Rifles' page 23. The basic pencil drawings of several cannon one labelled a '9PR' on the partially blank verso of Number 21 Wednesday 29 November and the blank verso of Number 22 Thursday 30 November are possibly in his hand. <p>Provenance: William and Ada Cock; by descent through their son Alfred Vaughan Cock to their great-grandson the vendor. 111 items. Folio single leaf folded once to form 4 pp. Dr. Alexander Meiklejohn 1872-1964 was an advocate of free speech and higher education based on the idea of a self-governing community with advisors teaching through tutorials instead of lectures and with an emphasis on the "great books"; he opened the "Experimental College" at the University of Wisconsin in 1927. Unfortunately the experiment failed with the students developing a reputation for "radicalism and wanton anarchy" perhaps an idea ahead of its time resulting in the closing of the College in 1932. <br /> <br /> This scarce BCC broadside printed by John Henry Nash announces three lectures to be given by him: "The Evolution of Spirit" "The College and the Community" and "The Poetry of James Stephens." Undated but we believe it was printed in 1927 based on a mention in the BCC 100 of the first lecture Dr. Meiklejohn gave: "In 1925 under the auspices of the Club but not connected with any planned series Dr. Alexander Meiklejohn spoke at the Palace Hotel on 'Democracy and Excellence' " cf p. xiv BCC 100. The broadside states "Dr. Meiklejohn's lecture before the members two years ago was so favorably received and so many expressed a desire to hear the speaker again that the Club takes special pleasure in announcing this new series of lectures." A quick look at the calendar for 1927 confirms that July 27 August 3 and August 10 did all fall on a Wednesday as the broadside states. The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was a London-based society formed in the early nineteenth century whose intention was to publish educational treatises on a wide range of topics so that individuals who could not obtain formal education could educate themselves. Previous owner's name in ink to title page. Offsetting to first and final pages of text block otherwise internally near fine. In later but contemporary brown paper wrappers with hand lettered label to each. Edges of wrappers of both volumes worn. With the ownership inscription "H. H. Q. where I shall very probably receive the order to go to the Yankee Army. I am really very sorry to leave you without having even been able to present to you my respects and my thanks for the kindness you have always shown to me during the time I have been attached to this brigade which is now exactly a year ago. I shall no more have now any lecture to do as I do not feel inclined to lecture the Yankees!!!' He concludes by expressing the hope that 'little you-you and her young brother Potter's children will sometimes think of the french sic interpreter who liked to hear of their doings'. Undated. Annotated in another hand ‘Winchelsea / 1805’. An interesting document neatly laid out in black with red underlining on both sides of 29 x 42 cm leaf. Painted in black lengthwise near one edge is ‘Winchelsea / 1805’ and 1805 would be a good year for the document’s composition with Britain fighting the Napoleonic Wars and in the midst of invasion fears around the time of the Battle of Trafalgar. 2pp large folio. On thick laid paper watermarked either ‘VI’ or ‘IV’ depending on which side you look from. In fair condition on aged and worn paper with closed tears and one nick not affecting text along central horizontal fold. On one side are entries for six of the twelve establishments: ‘Jersey’; ‘Landguard Fort’; ‘St. Maws’; ‘Pendennis Castle’; ‘Plymouth and St: Nicholas Island’; ‘Portland Castle’. On the other side are the other six: ‘Gravesend and Tilbury’; ‘Guernsey’; ‘Hull and the Blockhouse’ the North Blockhouse was demolished in 1801 but had been disused for some time; ‘Hurst Castle’; ‘Holy Island’; ‘Inverness’. The entry for ‘Plymouth and St: Nicholas Island’ is typical giving daily and yearly expenditure for ‘Governor’ £1289 2s 6d per year ‘Lieutenant Governor’ £182 10s 0d per year ‘Fort Major’ ‘Chaplain’ £121 13s 4d ‘Two Master Gunners - each 2s’ and ‘Eighteen other Gunners - each 1s’. The yearly expenditure is £2067 15s 10d. Interesting features are £40 per annum ‘For Repairs of the King’s House’ at Pendennis Castle a ‘Porter’ and ‘Under Porter’ at Portland Castle a ‘Town Major’ and ‘Surgeon’ at Hull and the Blockhouse and at Inverness a ‘Governor who is also Governor of Fort Augustus’ ‘Surgeon to the Garrison & Barracks of Bernera &c’ and ‘Highland Gally’. Sixty-two lines in small print follow beginning: ‘Some little time back your “Domestic Occurrences†contained the name of Mr. Edward Broome Civil Engineer as having died at Southport something under 60 years of age. It struck me then that a note of Mr. Broome’s quiet work in India ought to be made’. TWO: Annotated at head by Wood ‘India Sep 16th. 1902’. Sixty-eight lines of small print. The Justices having observed for some time past that a great number of persons have been in the habit of bringing provisions and divers other articles to the Markets in this City on Wednesday and thinking that is would tend to the public benefit if another market day were established besides the three days in each week fixed by the Regulations of Police. It is therefore ordered that Wednesday in each week shall; in future be considered as a public market day and that all persons who may bring articles to either of the Markets of this City on the said day shall be subject to the existing regulations respecting the said Markets. Colonel Commandant Johann von Belnay Lieutenant-Colonel Ludwig Koch and Captain Adalbert Guilleaume".
1902. London Buckingham Palace / Hotel Belgravia 1902. Oblong Octavo 14.6 cm wide x 11.8 cm high. 40 pages with partial perforation for detaching of Luncheon- and Dinner-Tickets. Hardcover / Original Royal Blue Publisher's cloth with gilt lettering on cover and pencil-satchet attached to the binding. Some minor staining to the binding only. Overall in very good condition with only minor signs of wear. With the pencil included and the original elastic ribbon which allows the booklet to be closed. Wonderful example of the wealth of the Coronation-Event at the end of the Victorian and the beginning of the Edwardian Age printed ticket-books for 4 attendees seem very luxurious indeed. Five tickets were used for Dinner at the Belgravia and each remaining stub was signed / monogrammed by Colonel F.M.Wardrop. The Guests of the Coronation as printed in this Luncheon and Dinner-Stub-Book on the occasion of the Coronation of Edward VII were: 1. Colonel F.M. Wardrop C.B. British Army officer who served as a Military Attaché notably at the British Embassy in Vienna. Records indicate he held this position in the early 1900s with reports of him completing his service period around 19001909. He was previously a Major and served in the Egyptian war of 1882 2. General of the Cavalry Johann v. Belnay Austro-Hungarian military officer specifically a Generalmajor GM. Records indicate he received a retirement designation in 1909 and a title in 1910 appearing in lists of K.u.K. Kaiserliche und Königliche generals from that era. 3. Lieutenant-Colonel Ludwig Koch 4. RIENZI is an historical novel based on Nicholas Gabrini de Rienzi who from a low and despicable situation raised himself to sovereign authority in Rome in the fourteenth century; assuming the title of Tribune and proposing to restore the ancient free republic. It is considered one of the best researched of the popular historical novels which so captivited the public of that era. A spectacular story of one of the heroes of the Italian Renaissance Edward Bulwer-Lytton personally reworked it into the 1842 libretto for the opera by the same title in which he collaborated with Richard Wagner.
