‎[Eighteenth-century Manorial Court Leet 'Charge in the Court Baron']:‎

‎Manorial Court Eighteenth century manuscript manorial Court Leet 'Charge in the Court Baron' engrossed on vellum giving instructions for an enquiry to be made by a land steward into matters 'that concen the Lord's Interest'.‎

‎Place and date not given. English; mid-eighteenth century. Engrossed on both sides of a long strip of vellum 18.5 x 76 cm. Written in a neat clerk's hand. The vellum is worn with slight damage at the head and some passages particularly at the start are illegible. The heading appears to be 'Court Leet Charge' and the sub-heading 'Charge in the Court Baron' appears twice. The text is strongly reminiscent to the relevant sections in Giles Jacob's 'Complete Court-Keeper or Land-Steward's Assistant'. The conclusion of the item is representative: 'Also if any by any ways corrupt the Common Waters where Cattle Use to drink by Whitening by Lims or by flax hemp or Stuff laid in the Water by which the waters are corrupt is to be presented Also any Tenant ought to grind in the Lords Mill whensover it is presentable Also if any miller within this Lordship take excessive Touls or Charge the Corn or grain that is brought to him to grind without his name And if there be anything else that concerns the Lord's Interest or anything unjustly done between Tenant & Tenant &c you are to have it in your Charge to Present It.' He lauds the abolitionists- - British and American-- who aid the Union cause recognizing "instinctively that this must become an anti-slavery war." They have enlisted in fighting regiments organized the education of freedmen at Port Royal. The pamphlet describes the freedmen's schools the freed children's eagerness to learn and the observations of the teachers some of whom were women.
OCLC 644153331 1- U Manchester as of August 2025.

4. BEING THE SUBSTANCE OF A DISCOURSE DELIVERED AT THE CONCERT HALL LIVERPOOL. BY F. D. SIEMMS A NATIVE OF LIVERPOOL WHO SERVED AS AN OFFICER IN THE ARMY OF THE SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY FROM THE COMMENCEMENT OF HOSTILITIES TO A VERY RECENT PERIOD BEING AN EMBODIMENT OF HIS EXPERIENCES AND OBSERVATIONS DURING A PERIOD OF EIGHTEEN MONTHS AS AN OFFICER OF ARTILLERY. Liverpool 1864. 24pp. Disbound with wrapper remnants along spine. Good.

Siemms says "Without any previous intention of being a soldier either in the army of the North or South yet I found myself one fine day an officer in the army of the Southern Confederacy." He gives some details of his unit's movements and briefly discusses different engagements while noting his frustration at the North's exaggeration in reporting its successes. His war experience was brief: "My military life ended" when he was taken prisoner "at Bull's run" and held as a prisoner until the British flag brought his release.
Presenting himself as something of an expert he says "the negroes are far better off than a certain class of poor people in many European countries." He says 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' is filled with exaggeration and "downright untruths." He exposes "the false pretence that the North was fighting for liberty" and says the press has greatly exaggerated the North's progress in the field.
Frederick David Samson Siemms 1844-1907 was born in England but it is unclear how he ended up in the United States or fighting for the Confederate Army. His military records show that he enlisted on May 13 1861 at the age of 17 years for a period of 12 months as a private with 1st Artillery Virginia Confederate with Capt. Johnson H. Sands' Company Co. B Henrico Artillery Virginia Light Artillery. His occupation was dentist and optician. Company muster rolls show he was discharged on July 20 1862. Military records of Frederick D. The Revolution would see the passage of the landmark Bill of Rights of 1689 ensured the exclusion of Catholics from the English throne severely curtailed the monarch's power and witnessed the effective establishment of a constitutional monarchy thereby ensuring the supremacy of Parliament. It further led to the Act of Toleration of 1689 granting toleration to "Nonconformist Protestants" but excluding Catholics whose emancipation would be delayed for a further 140 years. The present volume deals chiefly with Parliament's resolution relating to whether James had forfeited or abdicated the throne by virtue of his having discarded the "Great Seal of the Realm" into the River Thames prior to fleeing for France his subsequent capture at Kent and later exile under the protection of Louis XIV of France. Ultimately Parliament declared that: "King James II having endeavored to subvert the constitution of the kingdom by breaking the original contract between king and people and by the advice of Jesuits and other wicked persons having violated the fundamental laws and having withdrawn himself out of this kingdom has abdicated the government and that the throne is thereby vacant." "The Eliot Arms or Square & Compass Square and Compass Tregadilett was once a Freemason’s Lodge for French prisoners of war on parole in Launceston: History supplied by R. F. Gilbert The original building was built in the 14th century and it became a coaching inn during 1625. The Inn fell into disarray in the early 19th century becoming a blacksmith’s shop until 1840 when it reverted back to a pub and the second name ‘Eliot Arms’ was added. The French POW’s lodge is thought to have existed for five to seven years of the war and this is shown by two certificates of ‘The Lodge Consulate Maconne’ dated 1762 and 1763; one in French and one in English issued to Robert Martin organist at St Mary Magdalene Church. Both certificates had French signatures five on the one of 1762 and four on the other dated 1763. Several of the Frenchmen joined the Dunheved Lodge which must have existed during 1756-1773. The Eliot is reputed to be haunted by a not unfriendly ghost which is said to have been seen by customers and staff in recent years. Mr T Richards landlord of the Eliot Arms Compass made an application to the Bench for an hours extension on the occasion of the Polyphant Cricket Club dinner given by Dr Serpell. The application was granted. ." from The Post and Weekly Feb 1911; Put in world history. Pictured 12/5/23 . The Eliot Arms Hotel unknown‎

‎世界に輝く軍艦旗. Sekai ni kagayaku gunkanki. Japanese Naval Ensigns throughout the World.‎

‎Japan.: 海軍省. Kaigunshō. Showa 4 1929. Large colour folding map black and white photographic illustrations inset charts 107.3 x 225cm. Paper browned and a little soiled in places small holes at some fold points and edges neatly repaired with washi tissue on the verso. A handsome and striking map. This extra-large world map is richly illustrated with numerous photographic images showcasing the overseas activities of the Japanese Imperial Navy. It traces the sailing routes of naval training ships between 1925 and 1928 and features several black and white photographs of the ships and their crew during visits to locations such as Paris Rome Egypt and China.

Inset charts on both sides of the map illustrate the growth of Japanese naval power from 1894 to 1928 in comparison with foreign navies including those of Britain France and Russia.

The timing of the map’s publication is noteworthy. At the time Japan was adhering to naval power limits set in proportion to other nations such as Britain and the United States under the Washington Naval Treaty. However the inset charts clearly show a significant increase in Japanese naval strength over the years. By the 1930s the treaty’s influence had declined and Japan formally withdrew in 1933 following its departure from the League of Nations. . 海軍省. [Kaigunshō]. unknown‎
