Also comprises of a complete listing of the names of all of the Grand Officers for the years of 1917-18 names of members of the Audit Committee and the Committee on Laws and Finance. Remarkably well-preserved with little to no wear apparent to the extremities contents equally bright clean and unmarked with tight sound binding; near fine. ‎This Act of Parliament made it illegal to harvest trees that were "fit for masts not being the property of any private person" in many of the North American colonies. The fine for felling such a mast-worthy tree was one hundred pounds sterling for each offense. In addition the Act instructed the Surveyor General of Her Majesties Woods "to mark with the broad arrow all such trees as now are or hereafter shall be fit and proper to be taken for the use of her Majesties Royal Navy and to keep a register of the same." Each frame size: 16 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches; 419 x 343 mm.<br /> <br /> This pair of very sweet drawings that are full of emotion are most certainly in the early style of Kate Greenaway. One depicts a young girl and boy in a garden by a water pump and large urn. The boy is holding an apple an the girl is offering him a bite of a pie. The other drawing shows the same girl and boy crying as the large urn has shattered into pieces at their feet. <br /> <br /> We have been unable to identify the initials but we believe that they were done by a very accomplished mid-Victorian artist. : , 1875 unknown‎

‎‘I like to call her simply “Greta Garboâ€.’ Carbon Typescript of spoof article ‘GRETA GARBO - a Personal Memoir’ by Anthony Haden-Guest with TLS from John Anstey editor of Daily Telegraph Magazine expressing ‘misgivings about it’.‎

‎Anstey's TLS on his Daily Telegraph Magazine letterhead and dated 20 March 1970. Hayden-Guest's article evidently written shortly before that date. A curious artefact indicating Garbo’s iconic status and an early example of a journalistic trend which has gained ground since the late 1960s. Hayden-Guest still active as a writer is the son of the diplomat Peter Haden-Guest 4th Baron Haden-Guest and brother of the 5th Baron Christopher who is won fame as ‘Nigel’ in the film ‘Spinal Tap’. Anstey who edited the Daily Telegraph magazine for twenty-two years from its inception in 1964 has been variously described as ‘the last of the great autocratic magazine editors’ ‘tyrannical’ and ‘completely terrifying’ with a habit of sending his employees ‘alarming memos on the eve of their summer holidays’. He ‘did not often meet his reporters personally instead he wrote notes and invited them once a year to the magazine’s Christmas party’. While grateful for the money John Betjeman found working for the magazine ‘hateful’. Gitta Sereny who contributed extensively to what she considered ‘the best of the weekend colour supplements’ found Anstey ‘difficult’ but ‘extraordinary’. Both are items in fair condition lightly aged and stapled together. ONE: Unsigned Carbon Typescript of article titled ‘GRETA GARBO - a Personal Memoir Anthony Haden-Guest’. 5pp long 8vo. Single-spaced on five leaves. As Item Two makes clear the article is a spoof of the ‘type of article’ which Anstey describes as the ‘anti-profile’: pretentious and implying in conspiratorial tones an implausible familiarity with the subject. It is the sort of writing which Martin Amis would begin by satirizing. The beginning sets the tone: ‘Some people just a few call her ‘Greta’ right to her face That face. Charlie Chaplin does to name but one. All the same most people who are so close that they could call her ‘Greta’ in fact call her ‘G. G.’. Acquaintances But wouldn’t that be enough call her “Miss Garbo†and a very few indulge her own conspiratorial urges and refer to her as “Miss Brownâ€. As indeed she sometimes does herself. I am indebted for this information to the writings of Mr Norman Zierold who does not say what he calls her or what she calls him. / Personally I like to call her simply “Greta Garboâ€.’ Further on comes a passage which like the rest of the article may or may not be a complete fiction: ‘Actually the first time that I was introduced to Greta Garbo was under pretty funny circumstances but Destiny as so many of her great motion pictures have pointed out gets up to some pretty funny things. Certainly it seemed funny to see Garbo at a party especially this sort of party a flourescent celebration of . . . Well not Garbo though she is incontestably the centre of it all. An acid/rock group is pounding nervily away into the statutory light-machine and a film is being projected onto a wall which is white and narrow - so narrow that most of the party is taking place without artistic licence in the movie.’ Towards the end Haden-Guest stretches the bounds of credulity with the following: ‘Great Garbo! Now she is looking at me . . . The ageing roue is nowhere to be seen. Her shoulders are working hugely and her throat and the face . . . planes shift as conflicting emotions do massive internal furniture removals but now Garbo looks so worried and she says it - She actually says it - “I want to be aloneâ€. / Yes she is really saying it and not just once because she repeats it - “I want to be aloneâ€. / Well yes. Great Garbo want to be alone -’. TWO: Typed Letter Signed ‘J A’ from John Anstey 20 March 1970 addressed to ‘Anthony Haden-Guest Esq. C/o Chateau Marmont Los Angeles California U.S.A.’ ‘c. c. Pat Kavanagh’ 1p 8vo. He begins: ‘Dear Anthony I read the Great Garbo article when it first came in. Last night I read it again. It is a difficult one. However I know that you have misgivings about it - and I fear that I have them too.’ Anstey’s opinion is that the piece ‘just does not work at the moment. ‘It does not come across as the sort of “anti-profile†we were thinking about. It starts off by being intriguing. But then one just gets confused and there is a danger of it seeming rather pretentious: which is one of the faults of the type of article which it should be satirizing.’ He suggests that they ‘look at it again’ when Haden-Guest gets back from America. ‘The formula is right at the moment but we must overcome the danger of pretentiousness and it must seem less pointless than it is at the moment. The last paragraph cleverly suggests that there is nothing more to know about Greta Garbo than we learn here: but somehow I think that we have got to say more.’ The letter ends: ‘How is California Can you let me know about the Hollywood idea as soon as possible.’ Not known if published in any form despite Googlebooks. ‎Most from 11 Via Condotti Rome. 1914-1968. Forty items in good condition lightly aged and worn with some of the photographs with evidence on reverse of having been mounted. Millicent Goodsir née Unger 1885-1983 was governess to Christina Bezzi Scali 1900-1994 daughter of Francesco Count Bezzi Scali and his wife Anna 1879-1968. In 1927 Cristina became Marconi's second wife. Their only child was Maria Elettra Elena Anna Marconi b.1930 who would marry Prince Carlo Giovannelli 1942-2016. The present collection indicates the affection in which Mrs Unger was held by Marconi's wife to whom she had acted as governess as well as by her mother. It contains affectionate letters one written immediately after Marconi's death and cards one referring to Marconi's friendship with Churchill inscribed photographs and a typed lesson plan for the young Cristina Bezzi Scali. ONE: Eight ALsS from Cristina Marconi to Mrs Goodsir the first to 'Miss Unger' and the other seven to 'Mrs. Goodsir' the first signed 'Cristina Bezzi' another signed 'Cristina Marconi' and the other six 'Maria Cristina Marconi'. The last two including the signature appear to have been written by an amanuensis. The first undated but c.1914 'We are all very anxious to see if Italy will go to war!' the others between 1937 and 1968. A total of seventeen pages. An affectionate correspondence. In the first letter she congratulates her on the announcement of her marriage and reports: 'I study English with Miss Florence Hicks who lives next door to us'. The second letter is written as an autograph postscript to a typed black-bordered circular 30 July 1937 acknowledging condolences on her father's death. '. You fully understand what this loss has been for me and my little child. I pray God will help me to bear this heavy burden and to give me the strainght sic for the life without the love and protection of my dear husband. .' The other six letters date from after the war. In 1950 she reports 'We often go to the ceremonies in Saint Peter and often we have the privilege of seeing the Holy Father.' In 1964 she describes how she has 'been with Elettra far away on the maiden voyage of the new liner "Guglielmo Marconi" to Australia Tasmania New Zealand Polynesia and Fiji Islands. It has been a wonderful and interesting voyage with warm welcome to us both with great demonstrations to the memory of my dear husband - I have always been in touch by radio-phone with my dear mother who is now 85'. In 1965 she thanks her for news on 'her dear husband's work' adding 'I am always so much moved and glad to hear that especially in England he is not forgotten.' In the final letter she announces the birth of her grandson 'our darling little Guglielmo who is a bonny baby nearly 1 year old'. TWO: Six ACsS from Cristina Marconi to Mrs Goodsir two from 1939 and one apiece from 1958 and 1967. In 1951 she sends family news and condolences on the death of Mrs Goodsir's husband. In the last 1967 card written out by an amanuensis she thanks her for a gift relating to Winston Churchill adding: 'I keep a special souvenir for the great State man sic who was a good friend of my dear husband; I shall never forget more han one week-end spent together with Sir Winston and Lady Churchill'. THREE: Two ALsS from Anna Bezzi Scali to Mrs Goodsir 1914 addressed to 'Miss Unger' and 1930. A total of ten pages. The second letter seven pages long is written after a hiatus of sixteen years. She gives family news expressing grief on the death of her daughter Maria and the age of thirteen 'She died like a little saint full of patience in her sufferings - You can easily imagine what it was for me to lose her. The little darling! But . God's will be done!' She continues: 'Christina also has grown into a woman and married three years ago the celebrated Guglielmo Marconi known in the whole world for his prodigious inventions. He adores her and she is very happy. They go about a lot in their yacht "The Electra" and stay a good part of the year in London - I have also been there more than once and often accompany them on their travels'. She discusses her daughter's pregnancy and gives other family news. FOUR: Two ACsS from Anna Bezzi Scali to Mrs Goodsir one also signed by her daughter 'Cristina and Elettra Marconi'. FIVE: Two tiny printed carnet calendars 1932 and 1933 laid down on cards each also carrying a 5 x 4 cm studio photograph of Elettra Marconi. The first with signed inscription by Anna Bezzi Scali the second with one by her daughter Christina Marconi. SIX: Five 13.5 x 8 cm prints of family photographs. Two featuring Marconi his wife and an infant Elettra one of them with 1948 inscription by Cristina to Mrs Goodsir. Two of the others are inscribed: one by Anna Bezzi Scali showing her holding her granddaughter Elettra Marconi from Genoa 1930; the other of Cristina Marconi signed by her also from Genoa June 1931. The last uninscribed is of an infant Elettra in bathing costume on a beach. SEVEN: Sixteen Christmas cards and postcards all but one illustrated with views of Rome signed variously by Cristina Marconi her mother Anna Bezzi Scali and her daughter Elettra Marconi all to Mrs Goodsir. Sent between 1953 and 1968. With affectionate messages in the usual form and tone. EIGHT: Typed lesson list for one day by Miss Unger later Mrs Goodsir on slip of paper headed: 'Christina's Time Table'. Beginning: '9 AM Music Lessom. sic Practice. Practice. Music Lesson. ‎New York City: Harper & Brothers 1838. Leather Bound. 8vo. Uniformly bound in full calf. Engraved frontispiece. Each of these three volumes is noticeably bumped scuffed & rubbed. On the front free endpaper of each are stamped the words 'section' and 'shelf'. There is a small very old bookseller's stamp on the front pastedown of volume I. The hinges and joints are generally tight but one or two are a trifle weak and the front board of Vol. III is hanging by one cord. The contents show some light sporadic foxing. Overall the volumes can be handled and read with normal care and are thus still in good to good plus condition. Hall 1764-1831 was a Baptist divine reputed to have first preached at age 11. He created great controversy with his 'Modern Infidelity considered with respect to its Influence on Society' published in 1800 contained within vol. I of this set. These three volumes contain 'Sermons and Charges' 'Sermons not before Published' 'Tracts Political and Miscellaneous' 'Articles from the Eclectic Review' 'Miscellaneous Pieces' 'Notes on Sermons' and 'Letters'. Lansing Van der Heyden Hammond b.1906 son of the distinguished organist and choirmaster of Mount Holyoake College William Churchill Hammond was for many years Director of the Commonwealth Fund Division of International Fellowships. For Bonham Carter see his entry in the Oxford DNB. The present group of six items shed light on the 1940s administration of the Commonwealth Fund. They are in good condition lightly aged and creased. The autograph letter is 1p 12mo; the five single-spaced typed letters total 6pp 4to. All six are signed ‘Lance’. ONE: ALS 10 January 1948. 1p 12mo. Asking him to postpone a dinner engagement because he has ‘learned that Allan McKelvie one of last year’s Fellows is to be in Chicago on the 28th. leaving the next day for Rochester.’ TWO: TLS 29 December 1948. 1p 4to. With autograph postscript. ‘I was most intersted in hearing your reaction to Cambridge. We also had the good luck of hearing a candlelight evensong in King’s College Chapel; that I consider the most moving experience of the whole trip. I had never had a chance to realize before that the acoustics are as perfect as the architecture.’ He will be interested to have his ‘reactions to the plastic collars . the bell captain of the Yale Club who first told me about them assures me that one collar will last continuous wearing for more than a year.’ He ends with news of ‘Wick’ - Commonwealth Fund administrator Ezra Koster Wickman 1895-1981 - and his operation. THREE: TLS 18 February 1949. 1p 4to. Begins: ‘On the way to the office this morning I stopped in at Scribners and asked them to send you a copy of a book which I think will be of interest to you - President Conant’s EDUCATION IN A DIVIDED WORLD. Wick and I both think it excellent. As you know Conant is probably our most distinguished college president’. He describes ‘a fabulous trip West’ from which Wick has just returned: ‘With his own eyes he saw in Nebraska mounds of snow sixteen feet high flanking the highways’. ‘The new Fellows are all doing well; but Freeman Dyson continues to hold the record. He’s just been given a five year appointment by the Institute of Advanced Studies at Princeton . What a man. Geoffrey Crowther has been over here again winning customary acclaim and delighting his audiences.’ He ends with a reference to MBC’s ‘associations with William Collins & Son’. FOUR: TLS 9 June 1949. 2pp 4to. He begins by responding to MBC’s account of ‘the Flagstad SIEGFRIED’: ‘I heard her do Brunnhilde twice in the yers she was over here; and in some ways I think she was more remarkable in that than in any of her other roles. The way she did and responded to the “waking-up†music in the third act always made the part a new creation for me.’ He now turns to ‘another strong group of Fellows - and an unusually diversified range of subjects: among others a composer of modern music John D. L. Veale from Oxford; John R. Wahl from your college who is doing a book on Rossetti a classicist from Cambridge a girl from Oxford and Hull in my 18th century field and an experimental psychologist from New College Oxford this is not Cambridge’s year! in addition to the lawyers medical men engineers and physical scientists we always get. With the exception of the psychologist who may go to Chicago no one will be heading for your old stamping ground; but there will be three or four on the West coast; and two at Yale. As you can imagine I’m very happy about the selections and placements!’ He turns to the death of his father the organist William Churchill Hammond in describing whose last days he writes: ‘He never played more gloriously than at the noontide Good Friday service; he returned to the church to put the finishing touches to his Easter programme; and the last two pieces played - according to a choir member who slipped in to listen - were the Bach chorale “Come Sweet Death†and the “Hallelujah Chorus†from THE MESSIAH - a fitting climax to the good life he led.’ He discusses newspaper obituaries and stresses his versatility: ‘I’ve never known him to “warm up†before a church service or concert with jazz; he didn’t have to. . I remember once hearing a rehearsal of the Mount Holyoke College choir preparatory to the annual Christmas Carol concert in Town Hall N.Y.C. father had been working on enunciation and tonal quality; and it seemed to me the girls were singing unusually well. They came to a carol which had an echo chorus - “Joy! Joy! Joy!â€: with a troubled look on his face father stopped them. “Ladies†he said “do you realize what it is you are singing The whole of the Christmas message lies in those words. Sing them as though you also believed that the birth of Christ is an occasion for joy - as though you wanted your conviction to ring raround the world.â€â€™ FIVE: TLS 5 July 1949. 1p 4to. An apparently unrecorded handbill listing the members of the Highworth Association for the prosecution of felons an organisation dedicated to 'detect and prosecute to the utmost rigour of the Law all Persons who shall commit any Kind of depredations on their property'. The association operating in the Wiltshire market town of Highworth was as with many comparable provincial organisations across the country founded by local landowners to prosecute criminal activity committed on or to their holdings.
