Dainihon Yūbenkai Kōdansha. Showa 6 1931. Large colour folding map of the world with attractive border of some curiously chosen merchant ensigns and coats of arms along the upper and lower margins 78 x 110 cm. Neat repairs along some folds on reverse a little toning on map but still a good attractive copy. This large map of the world was issued as the new year supplement for a boys' magazine Shonen Kurabu 少年倶楽部 in January 1931. Japan and its territories in red are positioned in the centre of the map. The vastness of Russia and the British Empire stand out and the Irish Free State is still indicated as being part of the UK. Interestingly Russia is still shown in its customary Imperial green rather than the more common red that was typically adopted for the Soviet Union. . Few small washi repaired tears two old repaired tears on the reverse some occasional browning particularly at centre fold light staining upper margin intruding a little into the printed image. Overall an attractive copy. Scarce. Lieutenant Colonel Fukushima Yasumasa 1852 – 1919 undertook a remarkable solo horseback expedition across Eurasia in 1892. Starting in Poland he traversed Russia and Siberia on his journey. Stationed in Berlin as a military attaché in 1887 he was tasked with researching the Trans-Siberian Railway under construction by Russia. His successful expedition was followed by further explorations in India and the Balkan Peninsula.

This sheet divided into 24 illustrated panels narrates Fukushima's story from his youth to his triumphant return after the expedition. Filled with adventure the story depicts his encounters with both danger and excitement. The narrative unfolds in a clockwise direction starting from the bottom right corner similar to a sugoroku game which this may be but it is uncertain. The central panel featuring a newly erected statue represents the final goal of his journey. Each panel is accompanied by a caption that furthers the story. . [Fukui Einosuke]. unknown‎

‎[Japon. Yokohama shashin]‎

Miyajima inland sea at Aki. 2. View of Miyajima. 3. Garden at Okayama 4. Gathering Shell (Hommoku, Yokohama) 5. Takaboko (Pappenberg) Nagasaki 6. Ujikawa, Yamashiro 7.

‎[Joan Didion] The Campaign for Berkeley‎

‎Thanks to Berkeley Joan Didion's contributor copy with a note to her‎

‎Berkeley: University Relations 2008. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very good. An uncommon photo book that commemorates the launch of the Campaign for UC Berkeley in 2008 highlighting the campus in pictures and in words from renown alumni and others. This is Joan Didion's copy with a university notecard to her laid in from one "Mary Kay" likely someone in University Relations. It reads in full: "Dear Joan Greetings from Berkeley! We have found yet another way to use your inspirational words about Berkeley. The enclosed book include the summary of your essay in 'There Was Light'--the version you approved for the television spot--as well as another well-used quote of yours at the end of the book. Should you ever want to read your essay again there are many people who have asked about it and would love to hear you read it again--or for the first time. I continue to follow your work and life and admire your strength and optimism. I hope this note finds you filled with hope for the new year. With warmest regards Mary Kay." There Was Light: An Autobiography of a University: Berkeley 1868-1968 referenced in the note was published in 1970 and featured essays about the university from thirty-one notable alumni including Didion. She attended Berkeley from 1953-1956 and went on to become one of California's greatest chroniclers as literary journalist and essayist. See photos for the pages that hold Didion's words. A short quarto in denim blue cloth with the title stamped on the front board; dark blue endpapers and a transparent page guarding the half-title; 130 pages. A short introduction from Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau on the photo-illustrated jacket's front flap. The jacket depicts the campus's famous Sather Tower The book is fine; the jacket is very good with rubbing to all edges and some faint dampstaining at the center of its spine mainly visible from the jacket's interior and with no discernible effect on the book itself. An incredible UC Berkeley association copy and keepsake; we dare say this would make a one-of-a-kind graduation gift. University Relations hardcover‎

‎The Holy Bible; Containing the Old Testament and the New: Newly Translated out of the Original Tongues: And with the former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. By His Majesty's Special Command. Appointed to be Read in Churches‎

‎Oxford: John Baskett Printer to the King's most Excellent Majesty 1717. Leather Bound. Folio. Measures 52 x 34 x 14 cm. Bound in leather likely late 19th century. Binding split at rear joint. Some damage to text block especially prelims; a few loose pages some chips and tears foxing some pages darkened. Three rounds of restoration are evident the most recent carefully documented a fourth round required. Herbert 942A: "A magnificent edition printed in large type. With many plates at the beginning and end of books engraved on steel from the designs of various artists. Some of the initial letters are similarly engraved. Unfortunately the book contained many misprints and earned the nickname 'A Baskett-ful of Errors'. From the misprint The Parable of the Vinegar for vineyard in the headline above Luke xx this edition is commonly known as the 'Vinegar Bible'." "John Baskett 1665–1742 attained the title of “printer to the King’s most excellent majesty†in 1709 but his publishing career turned for the worse when he issued this richly-engraved folio Bible in 1717. Quick to point out the Bible’s numerous misprints Baskett’s competitors branded it “a Baskett-ful of Errors.†The edition’s more lasting nickname has been the “Vinegar Bible†because the words “Parable of the Vinegar†appear at the top of the page containing Luke 20:9 Christ’s Parable of the Vineyard." - smu.edu Special Collections. ‎John Moore; printed Poem 'Composed & Written by Butterworth & Son' entitled 'To the Memory of the Gallant Sir John Moore Who fell at the battle of Corunna 16th. January 1809.' with portrait 'Engraved by J. Menzies Edinburgh.'‎

‎circa 1809 Edinburgh 'Published as the Act directs.' 'for Butterworth & Son'. Landscape. On one side of a piece of paper roughly 25 x 41 cm. In poor condition: aged and damp stained with loss to top-right and bottom-right hand corners in neither case affecting text or design. Laid down on a piece of white paper. ‎[JOSEPH] RUDYARD KIPLING, (1865-1936).‎

‎[KIPLING IN THE OTTOMAN LANGUAGE] Cesur kaptanlar. [= Captains courageous]. Translated by Kamuran Serif [Saru].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original illustrated green cloth bdg. Slightly chipped and repair the spine. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm) In Ottoman script. [6], 328, 1 p., b/w plts. First and Only book of Kipling in the Ottoman-Turkish world. First Edition. Cesur kaptanlar. [= Captains courageous]. Translated by Kamuran Serif [Saru]. Captains Courageous is an 1897 novel, by Rudyard Kipling, that follows the adventures of fifteen-year-old Harvey Cheyne Jr., the spoiled son of a railroad tycoon after he is saved from drowning by a Portuguese fisherman in the North Atlantic. The novel originally appeared as a serialization in McClure's, beginning with the November 1896 edition. The following year it was published in its entirety as a novel, first in the United States by Doubleday, and a month later in the United Kingdom by Macmillan. It is Kipling's only novel set entirely in America. In 1900, Teddy Roosevelt extolled the book in his essay "What We Can Expect of the American Boy," praising Kipling for describing "in the liveliest way just what a boy should be and do.". The book's title comes from the ballad Mary Ambree, which starts, "When captains courageous, whom death could not daunt". Kipling had previously used the same title for an article on businessmen as the new adventurers, published in The Times of 23 November 1892. Translator Kamuran Serif Saru was famous with his Shakespeare translations into Ottoman Turkish and modern Turkish. Özege: 2971.‎

‎[GERMAN MAP OF ROMANIA] N.9. Hermannstadt (Sibiu).‎

‎Very Good German Original color map on cloth. A little foxing on cloth. Very good. Folded. Oblong folio. (45 x 51 cm). In German. Shows N. Enyed, Zalathna, Mediasch, Hermannstadt, Hatszeg, Petroseni, Ôzt River, etc. Scale: 1/300,000. Sibiu (Sibiiu - Hermannstadt - Nagyszeben) is a city in Romanian Transylvania. The city straddles the Cibin River, a tributary of the river Olt. The first official record referring to the Sibiu area comes from 1191 when Pope Celestine III confirmed the existence of the free prepositure of the German settlers in Transylvania, the prepositure having its headquarters in Sibiu, named Cibinium at that time. In the 14th century, it was already an important trade center. As of the year 1376, the craftsmen were divided into 19 guilds. Sibiu became the most important ethnic German city among the seven cities that gave Transylvania its German name Siebenbürgen (literally "Seven Citadels"). It was home to the Universitas Saxorum (Community of the Saxons), a network of pedagogues, ministers, intellectuals, city officials, and councilmen of the German community forging an ordered legal corpus and political system in Transylvania since the 1400s. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the city became the second -and then the first most important center of Transylvanian Romanian ethnics. The first Romanian-owned bank had its headquarters here (The Albina Bank), as did the ASTRA (Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and Romanian's People Culture). After the Romanian Orthodox Church was granted status in the Habsburg Empire from the 1860s onwards, Sibiu became the Metropolitan seat, and the city is still regarded as the third-most important center of the Romanian Orthodox Church. Between the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 and 1867 (the year of the Ausgleich), Sibiu was the meeting-place of the Transylvanian Diet, which had taken its most representative form after the Empire agreed to extend voting rights in the region (Source: Wikipedia). A sheet of the collection of 'The general map of Central Europe'. appeared in the years between 1873-1876 with the work of Joseph Ritter von Scheda, (1815-1888) who was a general, geographer, and cartographer.‎

The concluding paragraph congratulates 'Sidney Knight on his winning of the Lowes Dickinson prize. Working. Men's. College's latest gift to painting will be spending his scholarship money in Paris.' Pp.4-18 carry Grant's 'Some reflections in the Royal College of Art during Diploma Week and a review of the Lowes Dickinson Exhbition'. Grant begins by expressing satisfaction that he is 'part of a year that shows much talent. I wonder if this year will mark English painting as those golden years the Slade School enjoyed with John Spencer Gertler Nash and later Rowntree and many of the other well-known names. Will Plummer Robin Plummer b.1931 Messenger Anthony Messenger 1936-2001 Clairmonte Christopher Clairmonte 1932-2012 Chalk Michael Chalk b.1933 and William Green William Henry Green 1934-2001 be as parallels to the Slade painters of the first decades of this century' His discussion of the Lowes Dickinson Exhibition includes the work of 'Mr. E. H. Bennett a person to whom all in Group IV are indebted for his energy and hard work in organising the Sketch Club and his enthusiasm for the College' and the winner of the Lowes Dickinson Travelling Scholarship Sidney Knight 'Mr. Knight S. A. K.'. The final three pages 20-22 carry the 'Sketch Club Cuttings' consisting of short entries by the editor on eight outings to areas on the Thames. Of 'Chelsea' he writes: 'Lots of people. Another kind of farewell party to Keith. Our youngest painter and member practised his art in a skiff using oars instead of brushes. Round and round the Horses' Mouth - the barge for the film; perhaps hoping for a view of Alec Guiness sic and his lovelies. A most amusing jolly tea and cakes etc. passed up the hatch to the row of members sitting along the roof of a neighbouring boat.' See Image. ‎Louisville and Portland Canal. Letter from the Secretary of the Treasury In Response to A resolution of the House calling for information as to the condition and affairs of the Louisville and Portland Canal Company‎

‎Washington DC: House of Representatives 1858. Map. Good. Disbound wraps. 8 pages of text. Text is detached from the maps. Illustrated with three large folding map and plans: 29" x 20" Plan of the "Lattice Pivot Bridge"; 34" x 26" Map showing the location of the Louisville Portland Canal along the Ohio River; 28" x 21" Plan of the Lift Lock. Maps are loose. Tears and chips outside the borders on the far edges of the folding maps. A few small pin holes at the map folded intersections.

From wikipedia:

The Louisville and Portland Canal was a 1.9-mile 3.1 km1 canal bypassing the Falls of the Ohio River at Louisville Kentucky. The Falls form the only barrier to navigation between the origin of the Ohio at Pittsburgh and the port of New Orleans near the Gulf of Mexico; circumventing them was long a goal for Pennsylvanian and Cincinnatian merchants.2 The canal opened in 1830 as the private Louisville and Portland Canal Company but was gradually bought out during the 19th century by the federal government which had invested heavily in its construction maintenance and improvement.

The Louisville and Portland Canal was renamed as the McAlpine Locks and Dam in 1962 after extensive modernization.3 The name "Louisville and Portland Canal" or simply "Portland Canal" is still used to refer to the canal itself which runs between the Kentucky bank and Shippingport Island from about 10th Street down to the locks at 27th Street.

The canal was the first major improvement to be completed on a major river of the United States.4. ‎[KHALKEDONIA GREEK COMMUNITY].‎

‎[CHALCEDON GREEK COMMUNITY] Kanonismos tis en Khalkidoni Ellinikis Orthodoxou Koinotitos. [i.e. Regulation of the Greek Orthodox Community in Chalcedon].‎

‎Very Good Greek, Modern (post 1453) Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Greek (Modern). 79 p. Not in OCLC. The Metropolis of Chalcedon is an ecclesiastical territory (diocese) of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Christianity spread in Chalcedon during the 2nd century AD. The city was initially the see of a bishopric before being promoted to a metropolis at 451 AD, at the time of the Fourth Ecumenical Council. It is one of the four remaining active Greek Orthodox Church metropolises of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Turkey today and the only one surviving in Asia Minor (Anatolia). During the 14th century, the metropolitan see remained vacant, due to the Ottoman conquest of the region. However, it was reorganized in the 15th century, possibly after the Fall of Constantinople and the subsequent incorporation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate into the millet system of the Ottoman society. The first recorded metropolitan of that time was Joseph, in 1477. In the following years, the jurisdiction of the metropolis was extended to the east. During the late 17th century the see of the diocese was transferred to Kuzguncuk (Ermoulianai, Chrysokeramos), where it remained until 1855. At that period a number of monasteries were established, like the one of Saint Panteleimon, which was declared Stauropegic. The metropolitan of Chalcedon was one of the five Elder metropolitans from the wider region of Constantinople, the other being those of nearby Herakleia, Cyzicus, Nicaea, and Nicomedia. Following an Ottoman decree of 1757, they had to be always present in the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and had direct access to the Ottoman Sultan, to whom they announced the election of the new Ecumenical Patriarch. From the mid-19th century, the local metropolis prospered thanks to the significant population increase and economic development of the local Orthodox population. In 1855 the see of the metropolitan returned to Chalcedon during the primateship of Metropolitan Gerasimos. Moreover, the newly erected church of Saint Euphemia became the new cathedral. The metropolitan mansion was built near the cathedral in 1902. This is the first and only known printed regulation book of the Greek Community in Chalcedonia (Kadiköy). Extremely rare.‎
