Wraps cleanly split detached but present. A nice run of this official monthly publication "Issued by Industrial Workers of the World to promote the solidarity of labor."<br /> <br /> Illustrated with many cartoons drawings and black and white photographs. Issues contain a variety of IWW reporting editorial organizing efforts and other literary contributions. This "New Series" or "Second Series" of The One Big Union Monthly was the official monthly periodical of The Industrial Workers of the World which ran for eighteen issues from January 1937 to June 1938. This publication was preceded by The Industrial Pioneer which ran February 1921 to September 1926 though publication was suspended for fifteen month from February 1922 through April 1923 and by the "First Series" of The One Big Union Monthly which ran March 1919 to January 1921.<br /> <br /> It is immediately noticeable how many of the contributors and artists signed their work using pseudonyms their IWW card numbers or simply chose to remain uncredited more than likely due to the repression and fear of retribution that unions especially IWW members faced during this time in American history. Furthermore it seems as though the canons and biographies of many of the highly accomplished cartoonists and illustrators featured in this publication artists such as Pashtanika Dust Wallin Fred Jerger among several others uncredited or unidentifiable to us remain surprisingly under-documented and/or inaccessible to our online research attempts while cataloguing. Although we must note here that the website "Cartooning Capitalism" created by Michael Mark Cohen does provide some good coverage on the subject https://www.cartooningcapitalism.com/. Franklin Rosemont's 1987 essay "A Short Treatise on Wobbly Cartoons" sheds good light on the subject as well — Rosemont's essay is reprinted in more recent editions of Joyce L. Kornbluh's classic work "Rebel Voices: An IWW Anthology" PM Press 2011.<br /> <br /> Miles 4778. Industrial Workers of the World [IWW / I.W.W.] unknown

[Initials only], See Image [Author not identified; H Harris??See Note A][Charles Darwin; On the Origin of Species]:
Charles Darwin; On the Origin of Species Well-written Manuscript Essay talk or lecture Signed with initials not interpreted entitled "Suppositions concerning the double origin of Man"
June 1865. Manuscript Initialled by Author 6pp. 4to two bifoliums good condition. SEE IMAGE FOR FULL TEXT. The essay commences with a reference to Charles Darwin "Origin" having been published a few years before; "I suppose that animal life - supplied and controlled by the spirit of God Genesis I.2 - took its upward course through the Ages developing possibly one from another as Mr Darwin supposes and including all the different forms that are or have been up to the 'man' of the Drift.See Note below re. Pleistocene. I suppose this creature's organism to have been similar to our own and his instinct & organic action and the degree of its development must depend on the nature of an animals organs. I do not suppose that this man was more than an animal - that he had reason or speech- Birds build their nests by instinct; For rest of text see images" Note: A. The talk or lecture is in a flimsy folder on which is an apparent ascription to an "H.Harris" BUT see photograph of the concluding initials not interpreted by me; B. "The image of one page of six is a handwritten letter or manuscript page from June 1865 containing a discussion of mythological and historical theories regarding ancient peoples and their origins. The author speculates on topics such as the origins of amber trade routes the identity of the Finns and other northern tribes as descendants of Tubal Cain and the potential characteristics of the descendants of Cain. The text concludes by acknowledging that these are merely theories subject to change with better information or understanding of 'revelation.'" AI; C."The Middle and Late Pleistocene is arguably the most interesting period in human evolution. This broad period witnessed the evolution of our own lineage as well as that of our sister taxon the Neanderthals and related Denisovans. It is exceptionally rich in both fossil and archaeological remains and uniquely benefits from insights gained through molecular approaches such as paleogenetics and paleoproteomics that are currently not widely applicable in earlier contexts. This wealth of information paints a highly complex picture often described as ‘the Muddle in the Middle’ defying the common adage that ‘more evidence is needed’ to resolve it." See Images total item. [International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (The World Bank)]
Articles of Agreement Between the United States of America and Other Powers; Formulated at the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference Bretton Woods New Hampshire July 1 to July 22 1944
Washington DC: Government Printing Office 1946. First Edition. The first US printing detailing the articles of agreement of the World Bank. Original printed stapled wrappers with minor rubbing and toning staple rust ownership signature of R.H. Stimson to front cover else very good. 33 pp. The official U.S. State Department publication of the founding charter that established the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development commonly known as the World Bank. This document represents the second major institution created at Bretton Woods alongside the International Monetary Fund specifically designed to finance post-war reconstruction in Europe and promote economic development in emerging nations.<br /> <br /> While the IMF focused on monetary stability and exchange rates the World Bank was conceived to provide long-term capital for reconstruction and development projects that private investors were unwilling or unable to finance. The Bank's initial mission centered on rebuilding war-torn Europe but it quickly evolved to focus primarily on development lending to what would become known as the developing world.<br /> <br /> The timing notation is significant: though formulated during the July 1944 Bretton Woods Conference the Articles weren't signed until December 27 1945 - the same date the IMF came into effect when the ratification threshold was met. The United States deposited its instrument of acceptance on December 20 1945 just one week before the effective date demonstrating the critical American role in launching both institutions. Iran in Resistance. Vol. I no. 1 and Vol. I no. 2 September / November 1983
Philadelphia: Iran Student Association 1983. Two issues in original wrappers. Stapled paper self-wraps covers printed in two colors; 28pp 36pp; illus. Mild foxing at margins else Very Good. Text entirely in English.<br /> <br /> Organ of the American student arm of the Iranian People's Fedayee Fedai Guerrillas an Iranian guerrilla communist group that opposed both Western capitalism and the 1979 Islamic Revolution the latter chiefly from exile. This group is not to be confused with the Organization of Iranian People's Fedai Guerrillas from which the IPFG split in 1979 citing the former's lack of dedication to the principles of armed struggle. The magazine's contents are a combination of attacks on Iran's "imperialist" Islamic regime and on the foreign policy of the United States which the organization blames for laying the foundation for the Islamic revolution beginning with the CIA coup of 1953. A rare publication from a key period in modern Iranian history before the Islamic Republic had irrevocably consolidated power. This periodical rare; OCLC notes only about five locations for any holdings in the U.S. all for later issues. unknown

[IRISH-AUSTRALIAN AND IRISH-AMERICAN INTEREST - DE VALERA THE STATESMAN].
Collection of Newspapers and Ephemera Relating to Éamon de Valera and Irish Independence.
Ireland.: Irish Press and Department of Posts and Telegraphs. 1945 1948 and 1966. Two newspapers and one decorated envelope relating to the post-war efforts of Éamon de Valera to develop his public image as a statesman and the 50th anniversary of Roger Casement's death. Paper creased and somewhat friable though overall in good condition. This collection includes: <br> <br>A reprint of Taoiseach Éamon de Valera's radio address on the conclusion of World War II in Europe from the 17th May 1945 issue of the Irish Press titled 'Taoiseach's Broadcast to the Nation'. This speech was highly popular among the Irish people for its rebuke of a self-congratulatory comment made by Winston Churchill in which he had applauded himself for having not instructed British forces to occupy Ireland during the war akin to the treatment received by neutral Iceland. Includes a small black and white map of England highlighting the southeastern counties mentioned within de Valera's speech. <br> <br>A copy of a special issue of the Irish Press detailing de Valera's 1948 tour of the world with particular attention given to his visits to the United States and Australia and his appeals to the Irish diaspora in those countries. De Valera's visits to the United States and Australia are notable for his highly publicised meetings with both secular and spiritual authorities - namely President Truman Prime Minister Chifley Cardinal Spellman and Archbishop Mannix. <br> <br>The relationship between de Valera and Mannix is of particular note as the two had been personal friends since 1912 when they had worked together at St. Patrick's College Maynooth remaining close sympathisers with interweaving political careers amidst the turmoil of World War I the Easter Rising the War of Independence and World War II. <br> <br>At the time of this tour de Valera was no longer Taoiseach having been unseated by John Costello and he had handed de facto leadership of Fianna Fáil in the Dáil to Seán Lemass. Although he would return to the premiership in 1951 de Valera's 1948 tour marked an increasingly deliberate shift towards a more statesman-like popular image which would culminate in his ascension to the presidency in 1959. <br> <br>Also included is a charming pictorial envelope dated to 1966 dedicated to the 50th anniversary of independence activist Roger Casement's death with an explanatory card detailing his life and endeavours. <br> <br>A fascinating collection of valuable information on an important historical figure. . [Isadora Duncan]; Margaretta K Mitchell (Photographs, Introduction); Mitchell, Peter (Poem, "The Dancer")
Dance For Life; Isadora Duncan and Her California Dance Legacy At the Temple of Wings
Berkeley: Elysian Editions Wesley B. Tanner 1985. First and Limited Edition. Folio in a case. Fine. Mitchell Margaretta K. The printer's proof from an edition of fifty copies seven text pages and twelve photogravures all housed in a clamshell case. This an homage to Angela Isadora Duncan 1877-1927 and the incredible effect she had on modern dance which she initiated at the turn of the last century. <br /> <br /> She "emphasized the dynamics and rhythm of movement invoked the Greeks and refused to perform anywhere but in the sanctified halls of the opera house and concert stage. Duncan avoided all links with dance as it had been known in the nineteenth century - a 'leg business' that was titillating and low class. She remains a key figure in the history of American modern dance primarily because she established dance as a legitimate artistic practice" n.b. info and quote from the online Dictionary of American Biograpy. <br /> <br /> A native of San Francisco she spent much of her adult life in Europe and Russia. However her influence was deeply felt in the San Francisco Bay Area; an admirer and childhood friend of hers Florence Treadwell Boynton and her husband built a home in Berkeley designed by Bernard Maybeck which was named the "Temple of Wings". It was there that Florence created a dance school that adhered to her own beliefs regarding raising children with these beliefs integrated with the dance style of Duncan. Annual summer dance events were held at the Temple of Wings from 1914 through 1985 and it is this style of dance which is celebrated in this photographic portfolio. <br /> <br /> With photographs by Margaretta K. Mitchell b. 1935 whose "photographs belong to the Pictorialist tradition addressing formal concerns of line and shadow primarily in black and white" n.b. from Wiki. Her style shows in the twelve gravure plates in this work which bring to life the interpretation by Duncan and Boynton of the ancient Greek-style of dance. <br /> <br /> Issued in an edition of fifty copies plus nine copies reserved for the participants in the project this the printer's proof copy which we acquired directly from him. Somewhat uncommon in the marketplace as of this writing we see only a single other offering online; our search of OCLC locates four institutional holdings. <br /> <br /> ___DESCRIPTION: The work consists of nineteen sheets in a portfolio box the title page in blue and black four pages of Introduction this followed by the poem "The Dancer" this by the twelve photgravures with the colophon at the end the first page of the Introduction has a small photoengraved illustration printed in black there are nine continous-tone offset illustrations printed in black throughout the Introduction the twelve photogravures are all titled numbered this copy noted as "Printer's Proof" and dated by Margarette Mitchell each photogravure interleaved with archival paper for protection; types Castellar Van Dijck and Garamond on Arches paper the pages measure 19" by 15"; the box is covered in blue cloth with a white paper label mounted onto the front with blue lettering and measures 20 3/4" by 16 1/8". <br /> <br /> ___CONDITION: The text pages and photogravues all fine clean and without wear; the box near fine strong and sturdy but with a few spots of soil and a few areas of light wear including a small tear to the cloth at the bottom of the front of the box. <br /> <br /> ___CITATION: The Book Club of California Quarterly Newsletter Vol. LV Number 4 Autumn 1990 "A Bibliographical Checklist of Wesley B. [J Passmore Edwards (1823-1911), publisher and philanthropist] William Stevens, biographer, editor of 'The Biographical Magazine
J. Passmore Edwards philanthropist and ‘The Biographical Magazine’. Autograph Letter Signed from ‘William Stevens. / Ed. of Biog. Mag.’ to ‘J M Lamb’ discussing his suggestion and the parlous state of the magazine.
13 June 1854; 67 Arlington Street Mornington Crescent London. An interesting item casting light on Victorian London publishing of periodical literature. For Passmore Edwards to whom London is indebted for innumerable public libraries many now closed see his entry in the Oxford DNB. ‘The Biographical Magazine’ was founded in 1852 and the first two volumes were published by ‘J. Passmore Edwards 2 Horse-shoe Court Ludgate Hill’. Vols 3 to 5 were published by the London firm Partridge & Oakey after which it appears to have ceased publication in the year of this letter although it may have continued for a few years as ‘Lives of the Illustrious’. Some sources name Edwards as the editor but this item disproves that claim. The preface to the first volume reproduces the prospectus referred to in the letter. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. Fifty-seven lines of neatly-written text. In good condition lightly aged with the blank reverse of the second leaf adhering to a brown paper panel cut from the leaf of an album. He begins by explaining that he has delayed replying to the recipient’s suggestion until he ‘might be able to give some decisive answer’. ‘The propriety of such a monthly obituary as you propose has been several times under discussion but the cons have always prevailed over the pros’. He expected to have met with the publishers the previous day ‘to decide some little matters & then proposed to introduce the subject again; but something interfering then I must take another opportunity’. After setting out the ‘strongest objection’ and observing that the magazine sells better in volume-form ‘than the numbers’ he continues: ‘We are the more chary of any change as our circulation is at present very small. The Magazine has not had a fair trial before the public & is in many places I find absolutely unknown; this may in part account for the want of success.’ He has been ‘attempting to inaugurate a system of advertising’ and if ‘finances would allow’ feels that it would be ‘a great improvement to introduce also a portrait of each individual & perhaps afterwards other historical illustrations. At this I intend to aim.’ He is enclosing ‘an old prospectus or two. If you have an opportunity of introducing the Magazine anywhere they may be of service. I have nothing more recent at hand just now.’ He ends with thanks and an apology for ‘the hurry with which this is written’. 13 June 1854; 67 Arlington Street, Mornington Crescent, London. unknown

[JAPANESE FOLDING SCREEN - NANBAN BYOBU - THE PORTUGUESE IN JAPAN].
A Japanese folding screen specifically a nanban byobu depicting the arrival of a Portuguese ship in Japan.
Japan 1700. 104 x 272 cm each illustrated panel: ca. 90.5 x 44.5 cm. Ink watercolours gold paint and gold leaf on paper. The image is surrounded by a frame of silk brocade a narrow frame in burgundy and gold and a wider frame in yellow gold and black with a clear floral pattern; together the frame is 5 cm wide the whole is mounted on six roiro black lacquered wood panels with gilt metal fittings on the outer corners of the outer panels. The panels are backed with decorative paper. A remarkable example of a Nanban byobu literal translation: Southern Barbarian screen a type of Japanese folding screen byobu depicting the arrival of Europeans especially the Portuguese in Japan during the late 16th- and early 17th centuries. It shows the vast expanse of the Portuguese seaborne empire. From their possessions along the coast of the Indian subcontinent and their lease of Macau individual Portuguese reached Japan in 1542 and were followed by traders and missionaries the most famous being Francis Xavier. Nanban art provides a unique glimpse into a period of significant cultural exchange and the Japanese perspective on the arrival of the Portuguese in their islands. While inspired by the arrival of and trade with the Portuguese in Japan before the enforcement of the isolationist foreign policy commonly known as Sakoku by the Japanese Tokugawa shogunate from 1633/1639 onwards it remained a popular subject to depict on these folding screens and in other artworks during the Edo period and beyond. The image on the present folding screen shows a large four-masted ship probably approaching the port of Nagasaki. Crew members both Portuguese and people from Portuguese possessions in the Indian subcontinent are seen furling the sails and performing remarkable acrobatic feats in the ship's rigging. The artist emphasises the balloon-like bagginess of their bombacha trousers typically associated with the Portuguese and other Europeans but focuses also on distinctive details such as heavy gold necklaces facial hair hats capes frilly white handkerchiefs and ruffled collars. The foreigners are depicted as being exotic but not scary or very "other" they are depicted as being different while still simply being human. The decoration and colours of the flags flown at the top of each mast are reminiscent of Christian symbols the Cross of Christ and Portugal's colours green and red. Cargo and passengers are offloaded into small boats that pull alongside the ship the top right corner shows a 12-point wind rose including a depiction of the globe. The whole scene is enschrouded in gold clouds. After the Sengoku period a period of practically consecutive and almost continuous civil wars and social upheavals in the 15th- and 16th centuries Japan entered a more peaceful and prosperous period. Folding screens such as the present example were used to divide larger homes and generally show of the growing wealth and prosperity of the warrior and merchant classes. The screens are finely executed in detail and using vibrant colours and copious amounts of gold paint and/or gold leaf. Thematically the painting here continues a tradition of now-lost screens of Chinese trade ships that were in vogue during the 15th- and 16th centuries at the peak of the Sino-Japanese tribute missions that brought entourages numbering in the thousands from the Ming court. The precise subject of these paintings had since shifted from Chinese trade ships to Chinese- or more general Southeast Asian-style ships carrying European including men from the European possessions in Africa and Asia crews. The scene illustrates the dynamic convergence of Eastern and Western cultures through trade around 1600. Portuguese traders first arrived in Japan in 1543 and by 1570 they had established the Bay of Nagasaki as a strategic hub for their commercial operations which were largely unregulated. They generated significant profits by exchanging Chinese silk for Japanese silver although some European goods were also part of the trade. The Portuguese carracks massive three-decked vessels weighing up to 1600 tons captivated local observers with their impressive scale unfamiliar crews and exotic cargo.Alongside these traders Jesuit missionaries sought to spread Christianity finding particular success in Kyushu where many local daimyo converted. However a Christian-led rebellion in 1638 alarmed the Tokugawa authorities raising fears of European colonial interference. As a result the Portuguese were expelled in 1639. When a Portuguese delegation attempted to restore diplomatic relations the following year all sixty members were executed. In 1640 the shogunate instituted a policy of national seclusion restricting foreign contact to limited trade with Chinese merchants a small number of Dutch traders and occasional Korean envoys. By 1650 Christianity was outlawed and any missionary work was punishable by death. The present screen is a slightly later example and the focus of the scene lies mostly on trade and the ship's crew itself and not directly on any Christian identity of the foreigners arriving on Japanese shores. This screen belongs to approximately ninety surviving Nanban screens ranking second only to capital city scenes in popularity among Japanese patrons. The earliest examples date to the 1590s and their continued production throughout the Edo period demonstrates the lasting impact of the Portuguese encounter on Japanese culture. Some minor flaking of the gold paint/gold leaf barely any soiling the decorative paper back of the work shows some traces of wear and use. The image remains clear and the colours vibrant. Overall in very good condition. This exceptional screen offers collectors an important historical document that captures both Portuguese maritime exploration and the Jesuit mission to Japan-a unique period of cultural exchange between East and West. unknown
