‎Japan. No date. Circa1870. Two charming small watercolour paintings each measuring 13.6 x 18.5cm a little worming. These two vibrant paintings depict the Daimonji-yaki festival in Kyoto capturing the festive atmosphere of the evening celebration. Historically Daimonji-yaki was held in July according to the lunar calendar though it is now celebrated in August. During this event fires are lit in various shapes on the hills surrounding Kyoto symbolically guiding the spirits of the deceased back to the other world. <br> <br>The first painting showcases the character "dai" 大 illuminated on the hillside. A diverse group of people has gathered to witness the spectacle their faces filled with awe as they gaze at the glowing lights. In the second painting a figure resembling a boat known as the Funagata is depicted on the northern hill of Kyoto. Four individuals including a woman have climbed to the top of a steep roof to get a better view of the lights. While some members of the group appear to be enjoying the view one person seems apprehensive nervously looking down from their elevated position. <br> <br>These paintings beautifully capture the excitement and anticipation of the Daimonji-yaki festival showcasing the diverse reactions and emotions of the spectators as they partake in this traditional celebration in Kyoto. . unknown‎

‎Circa 1815. 12mo 8 pp. Fair on aged laid paper. On four leaves removed from a pocket book with two leaves numbered in manuscript '41' and '42'. Apparently a first-person draft of information for an appeal by the oldest surviving member from the inception of the group for a stipend. Begins 'Depuis le commencement de l'an 1760 que j'ai ete recu a la Musique du Roi j'ai été en exercice jusqu'en 1792 avec 222. sujets qui s'y sous <> dont 40 vivant encore au 18 Janvier 1815. .'. There follow a 'Liste des Morts' grouped under office or instrument and a one with dates of 'Musiciens du Roi vivante au 1er. Janvier 1815.' Also a list of 'Musiciens de la Chambre' dead since 1761. The numerical 'Resultas' are given with a short note in the first person on the exclusion from the list of the 'femmes du Cour de la Reine'. De Rohan's brief 'Apostile' approves the 'Doyen''s appeal 'a cause des services et de l'age'. One authority briefly explains the origins the Musique du Roi: 'Until 1761 the performance of sacred and secular music for the king were entrusted to separate bodies each part of the ecclesiastical and civil households. In 1761 both were merged and the position of grand-maître de la chapelle-musique was eliminated.'' [Circa 1815.] unknown‎

Charles Labelye (1705-1753) was a Swiss civil engineer and mathematician. Moving to England in the 1720s and receiving patronage from the Duke of Bedford and Earl of Pembroke, he is best known for his work on the original Westminster Bridge. He was invited by the Duke of Bedford and the Corporation of the Fens to compile a full and detailed report which was undertaken during periods of special leave granted him by the Westminster Bridge Commission. ‎<p><strong>A scarce popular print depicting the labours of the months and signs of the zodiac four continents the four classical elements and the four seasons. </strong></p><p>The top half of the engraving is devoted to the twelve months of the year beginning with an amply clothed man warming himself before a brazier with the sign for Aquarius above. The remaining months include a pair of jesters in February a courtly couple in May sheep shearing in June hunting and gathering in September and butchering a pig in December. The lower half portrays the four continents of Europe Asia Africa and America; the four elements fire water air and earth all represented by a female figure undertaking chores in the house and garden; and the four seasons with spring shown as a winged and bare-breasted female figure strewing flowers from a basket with swallows in the background.</p><p>The Endterische Handlung – successors to the Nuremberg printer and publisher Johann Andreas Endter 1625–1670 – remained in operation until 1854.</p><p><strong>We have been unable to trace any other copies.</strong></p><p><em>Physical description:</em><br />Copper engraving sheet 428 x 343 mm plate 343 x 271 mm with 24 scenes in compartments in 4 rows of 6 each with caption at foot 'Joh Andreae Endterische Handlung in Nürnberg N. 61' to bottom right; somewhat crude contemporary hand colouring in blue yellow orange and pink; horizontal and vertical creases from folding some light marginal dampstaining a few tiny holes a couple of small repairs to blank verso.</p> Joh. Andreae Endterische Handlung‎

‎3 manuscript volumes neatly written in black and red ink. Original wrappers with later string ties. Wrappers damaged with a little loss in places. Some worming. Still overall very good. 19 x 13.5cm. These three volumes are a collection of manuscripts written in the late Edo period probably the 1860s. Most of the original documents on which the manuscripts were based were written shortly after the arrival of the American delegation led by Commodore Matthew Perry in July 8 1853 June 3 in Japanese calendar. These documents written in the face of this national crisis were mostly driven by the patriotic fervour of the authors. They show a variety of thoughts about the threat from the foreign powers. None of these were published at the time and only Watanabe Kazan’s Shinki-ron was published in modern times. <br> <br>Kazan wrote his treatise inspired not by the arrival of Perry but by the Edo government’s hostile treatment of the American merchant ship Morrison in 1837. <br> <br>Titles and short synopses of these works follow: <br> <br>Volume 1: Chiyoda mondō Questions and Answers in Chiyoda 千代田問答 1853; Momijiyama shinrei-ki紅葉山神靈記 Message from the Holy Spirit in Momijiyama <br> <br>The author of Chiyoda mondō is unknown. The word "Chiyoda" in Chiyoda mondō is the name of the area where the Edo Castle sat and refers to the god in the Tōshōgū Shrine in Momijiyama next to the western part of the Edo Castle. This document is difficult to read but it appears to explain how a group of mysterious people or possibly divine spirits tell stories related to Japan's national affairs in 1853 discussing the country's national defence against foreigners and the situation regarding Christianity. <br> <br>In Momijiyama shinrei-ki the anonymous author who was an attendant to the group of the high government officials visiting the Tōshōgū Shrine in Momijiyama fell asleep and in his dream a Holy Spirit appeared and told him the necessity of enhancing the coastal defence in the face of the American expansion. <br> <br>Volume 2: Daimyō shoka kengi 大名諸家建議 Proposals from War Lords and Various People <br>　 <br>This manuscript is a collection of proposals and opinions expressed by Daimyō war lords and the retainers of the Edo government on the subject of Japan's foreign policy after the arrival of the American delegation led by Commodore Perry which requested trade with Japan. The Daimyō discuss how to deal with the crisis in terms of such issues as trade and coastal defence. Some even proposed possible war with the American fleet. The daimyo some of whom were high-rank officials of the Edo government included Shimadu Nariakira島津斉彬 1809-58 Maeda Nariyasu 前田斉泰 1811-84 Matsudaira Shungaku 松平春嶽 1928-90 Tokugawa Yoshinobu 徳川慶喜 1837-1913 Ii Naosuke 井伊直弼 1815-60 Nabeshima Naomasa 鍋島直正 1815-71 and the retainers included Inoue Saburōemon 井上三郎右衛門 - and Katsu Rinsuke 勝麟助 1823-99. Katsu became a capable mediator when the Edo castle was surrendered peacefully to the new Meiji government in 1868. <br> <br>Volume 3: 海防備言 Kaibō bigen Words on Coastal Defence.　Habu Kumagorō 土生熊五郎- Rifujutsui 嫠不恤緯 Widow Does Not Worry the Shortage of Weft the latter a Chinese expression referring to strong patriotism; Watanabe Kazan 渡辺崋山 1793-1841 Shinki-ron愼機論 Essay on Attention to an Opportunity 1838; Hakura Morochika羽倉用九 1790-1862 Gakaisho 畫灰書 Drawing in Ash and Gasuisho畫水書 Drawing in Water 1854; Fujimori Kōan 藤森弘庵 1799-1862 Kaibō biron 海防 備論Treatise on Coastal Defence 1853 <br> <br>Habu Kumagorō was a Confucian scholar in Wakayama. He proposed the developing the land of Ezo 蝦夷 Hokkaido. Rifujutsui discusses such topics as the advance of the Russians to Siberia and the necessity of developing Hokkaido as well as the art of war. <br> <br>Watanabe Kazan was a chief retainer of the Tahara Domain eastern part of present Aichi Prefecture Confucian scholar and also famous as a painter. Shinki-ron criticises the xenophobic foreign policy of the Edo government. <br> <br>Hakura Morochika was a Confucian scholar in Osaka. After the arrival of Perry he discussed the measures against foreign enemies. In Gakaisho a collection of historical essays Hakura objected to trade with America in the form of an answer to the sovereign message from America seeking trade with Japan. He also wrote an answer to the sovereign message from Russia but he was more sympathetic to the Russians because they sought trade through the official channel in Nagasaki while the American delegate in the military fleet came to Uraga in a threatening manner. In Gasuisho also Hakura mentions the harmful effects of Christianity. <br> <br>Fujimori Kōan was a Confucian scholar of the Ono Domain in present Ono City Hyogo Prefecture. In his later life he opened a private school in Edo and wrote the comprehensive treatise on Japanese coastal defence Kaibō biron after the arrival of Perry. . unknown‎

Wrappers previously split and now expertly repaired with Japanese tissue externally a little browned staple lightly rusted and a touch of foxing; overall very good condition. Third edition of the exhibition catalogue exhibiting the original artworks used in Seven Pillars of Wisdom the famous autobiography of Lawrence of Arabia. It followed the privately printed first edition of 1926 that was later re-issued by Jonathan Cape for sale to the public in 1935. The pastel portraits of British officers Arab nobles and Bedouin who fought alongside Lawrence have been long regarded as pre-eminent examples of psychological portraiture.</p> <p>The catalogue was issued by prestigious London based Leicester gallery under the auspices of Cecil Phillips and Oliver Brown. The calibre of Leicester Galleries is evidenced by the advertisement on the rear wrapper for previous shows including painting and sculptures by Van Gogh Picasso Matisse Degas Gauguin and the like.</p> <p>The present T.E. Lawrence exhibition of which this catalogue is an extant record featured original artworks by William Roberts Eric Kennington Augustus John Henry Lamb Paul Nash R.M. Young Cosmo Clark Colin Gill and Frank Dobson. Two are illustrated in the catalogue with full-page photo plates - namely the famous bust of Lawrence by Kennington and the pastel portrait of King Feysal by Augustus John. This is the second time the artworks were exhibited O'Brien noting that this 1927 catalogue was preceded by a Leicester Galleries catalogue of 1921 being the direct result of Lawrence commissioning Eric Kennington to travel to the Middle East to execute the portraits.</p> <p>In his celebrated bibliography of Colonel Lawrence Philip O'Brien notes there are three editions of this catalogue. This is an example of the third and final edition stated on the front wrapper and dated February 1927. The third edition of the catalogue is significant because the dagger and headband presented to Lawrence by King Hussein had been added to the exhibition by this stage and are duly noted in the third edition with the following explanatory note:</p> <p>'The Dagger Jambyyeh and Head-band Agal were presented to T.E. Lawrence in 1917 by King Hussein of the Hejaz. Lawrence was requested to wear them as an indication to the Arab Army that he was to be treated and obeyed as though he were a Sherif but actually on the field Lawrence took care that a Sherif by birth should always though often nominally be in command. The Dagger was made out of one hundred and fifty gold sovereigns which were melted down for the purpose.'</p> <p>The introductory text for this exhibition catalogue was provided by George Bernard Shaw and the text by Colonel Lawrence was lifted from the 1921 commentary on Kennington's famous sculptured bust. Illustrated with 12 photographs on 10 glossy plates and with three maps. 8vo original black cloth lettered on the spine in gilt in the original red dustjacket. 448 pp. A fine copy the dustjacket also in very pleasing condition with only the lightest evidence of age or use mainly at the tips. FIRST EDITION OF ALDINGTON'S WORK ON T. E. LAWRENCE he called the work a 'Biographical Enquiry' as he went back to research on his own the claims made in the many many earlier biographies of his subject including Lawrence's own writings such as THE SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM.<br> Aldington's "Enquiry" caused a scandal on its publication and an immediate backlash. He was the first to bring public notice to Lawrence's illegitimacy and he asserted that Lawrence was homosexual. To even greater outrage people felt Aldington attacked the popular hero as a liar a charlatan and an "impudent mythomaniac" claims that have coloured Lawrence's reputation ever since. Many believed his "venomous attack" upon Lawrence's reputation was nothing more than bitterness resentment towards Lawrence's fame gained in the Middle Eastern theatre in contrast to Aldington's own suffering in the European trenches. Later confidential government records concerning Lawrence's career were released which allowed the accuracy of both Lawrence's own account and Aldington's research to be fairly gauged. Cream boards with quarter Niger leather spine and gilt titles by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The black leather is in excellent condition but the cream boards are a little rubbed on the corners and slightly soiled. Still attractive though. The end papers have stains where tape has been used it seems to hold a previous cover. Otherwise the book is in very good clean condition. #458 / 1000 copies. Printed on Arnold's mould made paper.
