Wittenberg: Veit Kreutzer 1544 German edition of Melanchthon's Loci Communes first published in Latin in 1521 as "Loci communes or Loci communes rerum theologicarum seu hypotyposes theologicae" Latin for Common Places in Theology or Fundamental Doctrinal Themes. Very good. Pages of the text are numbered entirely in roman numerals to page CCCLIII. With an unnumbered register index of 23 pages. Beautiful contemporary stamped ivory vellum veneer boards with a set of elegant silver clips. No front endpaper. The copy bears an early bookplate "Ex bibliotheca Gust. Ad. Hauseri theol et philos. stud. Cl nr" inside the front board. Light pencil signatures from the 19th century trace the stewardship of Ole Lokensgaard 1854-1931 Granite Falls Minnesota who came to the US in 1857. The family was associated through his son Gerhard W. Lokensgard with St. Olaf College in Northfield. It has been held by the family through 3 generations. The Loci Communes evolved with the reform movement. This 1544 edition is translated by Justus Jonas into German based on Melanchthon's 1542 revision. Title in English: "The Heubtartike Christian Literature/ drawn together/ By Philippum Melanthon/ called in Latin/ Loci Communes Theologici. Germanized by Justum Jonam/Doctor/ and in the 1542nd year/ By Philip. Melanth. checked again and improved." The Loci Communes evolved with the movement. Philipp Melanchthon 1497 – 1560 was a German reformer a collaborator with Martin Luther and part of the Wittenberg team that established the foundation of the Protestant Reformation. Melanchthon was its first systematic theologian and an intellectual leader of the Lutheran Reformation who with Luther was a primary founder of Lutheranism. Loci Communes was Melanchthon's Magnum Opus. "Melanchthon points out that he wrote the Loci Communes to encourage people to bypass extra-biblical sources and go straight to scripture. He does not believe it makes sense to try to integrate philosophy with the interpretation of the Holy Scriptures. Melanchthon berates the scholastic methodology of dialectic. He discusses the skewing of scripture that those who employ such methodology foisted upon the interpretation of scripture". The colleagues that Luther assembled in Wittenberg’s theological faculty formed the nucleus of his team. This included Justus Jonas 1493 –1555 who served in addition to roles as advisor and legal expert as translator of the works of Luther and Melanchthon from Latin into German or German into Latin. In the 16th century intellectuals across Europe spoke Latin. To spread the Wittenberg message this process of translation and revision was essential to the maturing of the movement. The later editions were published from 1543-1559 with the final edition being published just one year before Melanchthon’s death in 1560. The 1560 edition is four times the size of the original 1521 edition. "The German text of the third generation remains close to the second generation of the Latin Loci; the text is a revision by Melanchthon of the translation of Jonas.He once confessed that he found the final revision of this German translation better than the Latin Loci CR 22 31/32." We believe that this 1544 Jonas translation may be the one to which Melanchthon refers. But that is a matter for further scholarly investigation. Boston: the hotel 1865. Menu printed on silk 30 x 10.5 cm. one leaf printed verso only. Illustrated with an engraving of vignettes of freight transport via ship and train. WITH: Printed envelope 8 x 13 cm. with an engraving. A handsome menu printed on silk for a banquet celebrating the Boards of Trade of the Western Cities given by the City of Boston at the Revere Hotel. Revere House was one of the city's leading hotels hosting guests that included Charles Dickens Jenny Lind and Walt Whitman. Daniel Webster addressed audience from the steps of the portico. The engraving on the envelope depicts the hotel from across Boston's Bowdoin Square. The hotel has had an additional structure added to the previously flat roof. The bill of fare for the Western Boards of Trade included Green Turtle Soup Baked Shad in a Wine Sauce Leg of Southshore Mutton in Caper Sauce Duffield's Ham Pate de Foie and much more. In remarkably fine condition with only the slightest fraying to the edges of the silk. The envelope with an engraving of the Boston's City Hall has some light soil but is near fine. the hotel hardcover

Vienna Austria 1916. Broadsheet menu 16.5 x 12 cm. pasted onto a card backing. The menu bears the blind-stamped armorial crest of Austria-Hungary. At the time of this dinner the arch-conservative Prime Minister Carl Graf Sturgkh was ruling alone having dissolved both the provincial assembly and the Austrian Rechstrat. Eight months after this meal Sturgkh was assassinated. The meal is simple but elegant: Oglio en tasse turbot a l'amirale selle de veau Godard Chaudfroid a la Diane Artichauts a l'istrienne Pain Médine patisserie de fromage sorbet and dessert. The wines are exceptional as would be expected: Xéres Oloroso Niersteiner 1904 Auslesse Ruthe Chat. Lafitte 1878 Acker Moet-Chandon Imperial and Chat d'Yquem 1974 Acker. All followed by a Cognac Marquis or "Allasch"a fine kummel. Also included is a clipping from the Wiener Bilder with a photograph of Sturgkh pasted onto a sheet of card. The menu has been folded is worn at the folds and is somewhat soiled; one corner is chipped. Good. Signed by Strugkh in the lower right-hand corner. unknown

Mexico City: December 31 1829. Very good. Broadside 12 x 8.25 inches. Minor staining and creasing moderate edge wear pinholes along left edge. A decree by Mexican President Vicente Gurrero promulgated by Jose Ignacio Esteva Governor of the Federal District. The decree renews the prohibition on the habit among newsboys of publicly shouting out the news while trying to sell newspapers noting that the practice is a public nuisance and not an infringement on the "sacred freedom of the press." Esteva was appointed by President Guerrero to govern the Federal District after Tornel was appointed Minister to Washington; his most effective service was as Minister of Finance for the fledgling country during much of the 1820s. The present decree is rubricated by both Esteva and his secretary. No copies located in OCLC though some may be present within larger institutional collections. December 31 unknown

Scarce heavily autobiographical first novel by Oscar Micheaux relating his experiences as a homesteader in Gregory County South Dakota and the failure of his first marriage. Though published anonymously as by "The Pioneer" with names of characters changed the protagonist is Oscar Devereaux Micheaux's middle name. <br /> <br /> Micheaux's theme is African Americans realizing their potential in pursuits outside of their accustomed roles. He contrasts the more common city lifestyles of African Americans with the life he chose as a lone Black pioneer in the far West.<br /> <br /> Oscar Micheaux would go on to a successful career as a writer film director and producer. He is considered the first major African American filmmaker producing both silent and sound films. <br /> <br /> The book is dedicated to Booker T. Washington. Stated "First Edition May 1 1913" on copyright page. One of the 1000 copies reportedly printed.<br /> <br /> Important and tough to find book by a true African American pioneer in every sense of the word. <br /> <br /> Ref. Jacket has some darkening to the spine but front & rear panels are bright. This volume contains the 57 page diary Lawrence kept during a journey he made on foot through Northern Syria in the summer of 1911 to study and photograph the Crusaders' castles and the collection of antiquities. Also included is the first publication of the suppressed introductory chapter to Seven Pillars of Wisdom along with a selection of character studies a previously unattributed essay and 129 photographs by Lawrence many before unpublished.</p> Dutton, hardcover

Circa1935. Personal photograph album of a voyage on the M.S. City of Rayville from Port Said to India and Burma. 61 black and white photographs neatly annotated each measuring 6.5 x 8.5cm. Original covers have been replaced with rather amateur cork covers and unlettered cloth tape spine. Some photographs are marked and stained but generally a very interesting album. The album bears the name Nicholas Kyryczuk on the first leaf. It appears that Kyryczuk was a sailor on board the MS City of Rayville 5833 tons owned by American Pioneer Lines an American registered freighter which was sunk by a German mine off Cape Otway on the south coast of Victoria in November 1940. The MS City of Rayville holds the dubious distinction of being the first US vessel sunk during World War II and having the first US seaman to be killed in the war among her crew. Loosely inserted in the album are two Australian newspaper clippings with stories about the sinking. Although this album covers a period before the sinking it is interesting nonetheless for the great interest that the photographer showed in the ports visited and the locals they observed. . hardcover

An unusually comprehensive archive of correspondence photographs and documents relating to an Australian serviceman in the First World War. Second Lieutenant Edward Watson Powell served at Gallipoli and on the Western Front trained as a pilot with the Royal Flying Corps and was killed in action when his Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a was shot down over Belgium in October 1917
Powell enlisted in Melbourne in August 1914 service number 187 and was deployed to Gallipoli with the 2nd Field Ambulance A.I.F. After the evacuation he was promoted to corporal and then sergeant while with the 1st Divisional Headquarters seeing action on the Western Front before training as a pilot and being commissioned as an officer with the Royal Flying Corps in March 1917. Deployed once again to France with No. 84 Squadron R.F.C. in late September 1917 he was reported missing near Menin Menen Belgium on 31 October likely shot down by a German fighter. The archive comprises: <p>1 Approximately 75 autograph letters sent by Powell to his mother Clara and twin sister Mary in East Prahran Melbourne running to some 235 octavo or quarto pages. They date from soon after his enlistment to shortly before his death. Six were written on the Gallipoli Peninsula with others from Egypt the Western Front and the United Kingdom mainly during pilot training. While many of the letters are routine and others are guarded at numerous occasions Powell allows himself to reflect candidly on his experience of the war see examples below. <p>2 Approximately 90 closely-written postcards also addressed to Clara and Mary mainly from Egypt while on active service. The postcards are often written in numbered series most of which are complete. <p>3 Approximately 15 Field Service postcards signed by Powell several with Gallipoli postmarks. <p>4 Approximately 45 vintage gelatin silver photographs most relating to Powell's war service. The most interesting are 17 small snapshots approximately 45 × 65 mm most likely taken by Powell himself his letters suggest he was a keen amateur photographer showing gullies and ridges at Gallipoli 2; Australian servicemen and encampments in the Middle East with captions on the versos identifying several 7; R.F.C. aircraft apparently Farman reconnaissance biplanes in the snow at Netheravon Airfield 3 all captioned; and five others taken during pilot training in Britain. There are also five larger images approximately 80 × 110 mm showing military aircraft two possibly also showing Powell and two showing an airship. There are ten portrait photographs of Powell five in uniform one in a small cut glass and mother-of-pearl frame probably purchased in Egypt as well as three in which he is shown with a young woman likely Mary apparently taken shortly after he enlisted. A further nine photographs show friends and relatives some identified. <p>5 Approximately 60 pieces of ephemera and personal documents relating to Powell's service mainly mess bills receipts and other financial documents but also Christmas cards cinema programmes and city maps. A few relate to his life before the war including a reference from an employer. There are also several interesting documents relating to First World War aviation including the 'Royal Flying Corps Communiqué No. 58' 22 October 1916 giving details of R.F.C. actions in France bombing aerial photography casualties hostile aircraft flying conditions etc. for the preceding week. <p>6 Approximately 30 letters addressed to Powell mostly from his aunt Emma. Many of the letters are dated 1917 suggesting they may have been among his effects when he died. One particularly engaging three-page letter from a fellow R.F.C. officer Nugget and addressing Powell also as Nugget a few words censored gives a very detailed account of a dog-fight with German aircraft over the Western Front. Dated 16 September 1917 shortly before Powell's deployment to France it also includes much practical advice on flying in combat. <p>7 29 postcards addressed to Powell from two young French women Jeanne and Renée whom he may have met in Marseille in early 1916: '. je suis inquiète de ne plus reçevoir de vos nouvelles. Ne m'oubliez pas. I love you' etc. There is also a small photograph of Jeanne clipped from a postcard-format photograph. These items may have been forwarded to his sister as part of their running joke about him bringing home a foreign bride. <p>8 Some 40 official documents and family correspondence subsequent to Powell's death including the official telegram announcing his disappearance. <p>9 Approximately 60 envelopes and other items of postal stationery most retaining the postmarks and stamps if used. The postmarks include numerous field post offices including Gallipoli Egypt Greece and the Western Front. <p>10 A Sam Browne belt and leather notebook case purchased with the archive and with Powell's name in black ink on the inside surface. <p>11 A group of 7 postcards from Mary's fiancé Harold while on service in Egypt and the Western Front. <p>12 Eighteen reproductions of other photographs relating to Powell's war service showing Egypt Gallipoli and apparently an airfield in Britain. Several show Powell alongside other Australian soldiers. <p>A few highlights of the collection include: <p>A letter to his mother from Gallipoli on 20 May 1915: 'The infantry have done marvellous work here as you will read in the press. It needs seeing the cliffs & then you could appreciate it. It was wonderful. Poor Lou Matthews died yesterday I believe shot though the head but Arthur Clayfield was all right yesterday at any rate. Keith McIlwraith . died the first day bullet in head. I am not in love with this war game & in fact I think that after 3 more wars I will retire from the game & let someone else get all the glory &c out of it'. <p>In another letter to his mother from Gallipoli on 16 June 1915 Powell asks her to tell his sister that the dances in fashion in the trenches are the 'Shrapnel slide' the 'Shell shivers' and the 'Howitzer hug' and 'I may tell you baseball was a good training inasmuch as the sliding into a hole is concerned'. <p>A lengthy letter from the Western Front to 'Ma chere Mere' is dated '8 Mai 1916': he has been granted furlough to England and asks for £20 to be cabled to his account. 'Our 2/- per day wont allow for any saving-up as although we are fighting for their country the Northern French people put the weight in to the Australians just the same as the Egyptians did'. Later he writes 'We are in the fighting line again but it is nothing to Gallipoli - take it from me Gallipoli from Apl 25th to about 20th August was some go & after seeing that through I reckon a chap will die of old age. Well I am glad that I came with the 1st Division as we have some choice names for the chaps arriving now & they get rather a rough time when they start to talk to fellows about Gallipoli & were never there in their lives. It is rather annoying but the ones who were not on the Penin. at all or who were there for about 5 minutes that is after August do all the talking'. <p>A fortnight later on 21 May 1916 he tells his mother about a thank-you letter he receives for his 'acknowledging letter to the billy which I received while at Lemnos after Gallipoli. The funny part about those billies was the way they were pasted round with a kangaroo on the map of Gallipoli & on it - "WHAT WE HAVE WE'LL HOLD". We got them just after being withdrawn from what we had won from them. It seemed like a bit of a rub from "JACKO" the Turks'. <p>In a letter from the Central Flying School Upavon on 21 April 1917 Powell reflects that 'as usual the poor old Australians are doing more than their share. The Huns recently claimed to have cut off 750 of them you can guess it was the poor old 1st Div. going on ahead & not being supported on the flanks at Lagnicourt. It is only history repeating itself the same as Gallipoli the English troops letting them down & then some people over here pretend to think them "not nice" because when they get a little leave from France or hospital they play up a little. I wonder how they would get on without the Australians New Zealanders & Canadians - anyway I know to whom they give the hardest fighting & whom they welcome with open arms to the R.F.C. - nuf sed'. <p>Over 520 items. unknown

This set is the fifth in the Chinese military educational poster series. The posters and chemical weapons featured on the images are numbered the chemical weapons numbering from no. 86 to no. 121. Tiny holes in the upper corners of each poster where they have been hung in the past. The posters show signs of wear and tear particularly at the edges some tape repairs to reverse occasional browning and soiling overall good. Text in traditional Chinese. Posters measure 77.5 x 53.5cm. Poster no. 1 features 3 detailed images of WWII American made chemical weapons and their parts. This rare and decorative Gallipoli map including Hellespont, Gallipoli Peninsula, Suvla Bay, Seddülbahir, and Tenedos, the places of Gallipoli Aar in 1915 (Dardanelles Campaign) during World War 1, separated two map views. Seddulbahir and Suvla Bay at north and Straight, Peninsula, and its shores with Tenedos (now Bozcaada) at the southwest of the map. It's a very detailed and rare map printed with the series of "History of the Dardanelles Campaign" after the seven years of war. The Gallipoli campaign, also known as the Dardanelles campaign, the Battle of Gallipoli or the Battle of Çanakkale (Turkish: Çanakkale Savasi, or, Muharebâti), was a military campaign in the First World War that took place on the Gallipoli peninsula (Gelibolu in modern Turkey), from 17 February 1915 to 9 January 1916. The Entente powers, Britain (with Anzacs), France, and Russia, sought to weaken the Ottoman Empire, one of the Central Powers, by taking control of the Turkish straits.

This conference also known as The Washington Naval Conference; The Washington Arms Conference or the Washington Disarmament Conference was a meeting of delegates from nine nations - the USA Japan China France Britain Italy Belgium the Netherlands and Portugal. This group which very deliberately excluded Russia met in this interesting post WWI world to discuss and negotiate their interests in the Pacific and the East Asian region. Three major treaties were some of the results of the conference: Four-Power Treaty; Five-Power Treaty also known at the Washington Naval Treaty and the Nine-Power Treaty together with a number of other smaller agreements. These treaties helped keep the peace throughout the 1920s and also helped Japan build up her navy and work on consolidating her position in China. The decisions and actions that took place at this conference clearly had an effect on the lead up to World War II in East Asia and it can be argued still have echoes today on relationships with and within the region today. . 外交部. An outstanding Victorian dos-a-dos parlour photo album from a seemingly notable and well-to-do Minneapolis Minnesota family in the Gilded Age. On the “Blue†side the album opens with albumen boudoir-sized art photos of early Toronto including a “birds-eye†view. The first boudoir photo includes a ink manuscript list of “a few interesting dates†with mentions of Edward Murphy Jr. settling after 8 weeks passage presumably Ireland in Toronto followed by his family of 9 in 1837. Other dates mention settling of George & James Walker in Toronto 1837 Andrew joining the Volunteers on the Frontier and in 1843 Edward opening his business a “98†Long Street and building of the Terauley Street House near present-day Univ. of Toronto Toronto General Hospital etc. There are additional dates and note that John Walker and family “went West†in 1846 but unfortunately for this cataloguer there were a myriad of Edward Murphy’s John Walker’s and similar named families none of whom seemed to match either the entry date points. Only documentary evidence was that an Edward Murphy Jr. appears in the 1837 Toronto ONT street directory. Edward’s business appears to have been prosperous as this album incorporates a wide range of studio photographers during the Gilded Age from San Antonio to Chicago Milwaukee to Minneapolis. Two of the albumen studio photos 1 boudoir 1 cabinet interestingly depict a montage of smaller cabinet photos capturing all the images of Company A First Regiment N.G.S.M. or the storied Minnesota First Regiment National Guard at the time commanded by Captain John Amory. The Minnesota First Regiment is perhaps best remembered for their heroic charge in 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg and in the subsequent decades never lacked for sufficient recruits. The mounted CDV of an unidentified Civil War Corporal is included in the album and may have been from either the Murphy or Walker sides of the family if the internal MS notes are to be referenced. Of special interest are the four wonderful albumen cabinet photos depicting the N.S. Toboggan Club -- North Star Toboggan Club founded in 1886 and formed for tobogganing sporting events during the Saint Paul-Minneapolis Winter Carnival as well as competing against the Makwa Club Flour City Club and Snowshoe Club on their individual Toboggan slides -- basically uncontrolled and fast ice luge racing. The North Star Club’s slide was West of Minnesota on Glenwood Hill in what is now Theodore Wirth Park. The toboggan slide was probably located near where ski jumps were built later after the area became Saratoga Park then Glenwood Park and finally Theodore Wirth in 1909. The group shot provides first names or monikers of the eight intrepid toboganners in Feb. 1887 and the three individual ones depict Boyd Ballard & Dane all wearing their price ribbons from the competitions. Many of the extended family members were captured by such Minnesota studio photographers as H.A. Anderson who operated at 428 Nicollet and was the successor to H.R. Farr; the very popular James A. Brush whose studios tented to move up and down Nicollet Ave. and Hennepin Ave. from 1875-1890; G.W. Floyd who first partnered with Power and then expanded to three studios himself on Fifth and Hennepin; and William H. Jacoby 1841-1906 who with his son C.L. Jacoby produced the Minnesota First Regiment Christmas souvenir montage photos and was active until his death in California and even partnered with Haynes for a while and perhaps best remembered for his robbers’ portraits of the participants in the famed “Northfield†robbery. The photo of “Father†probably Edward Murphy Jr. while in San Antonio TX on business was taken by the Paris & Rothwell studio operated by Arthur C. Paris and Isaac N. Rothwell on 11&13 West Commerce until 1892. The latter was a self-selected group of young writers lawyers preachers and landed scions whose acknowledged leader was the politician Henry Dundas. Many of these individuals had earlier belonged to the Belles Lettres Society 175963 the junior version of the Select Society a famous grouping of Scottish politicians philosophers preachers and writers. In its early evolution from the Feast of Tabernacles about 17767 the founding members of the Mirror Club included Henry Mackenzie William Craig Alexander Abercromby William Macleod Bannatyne and Robert Cullen. Other members from this time were the lawyers George Ogilvie d. 1785 William Gordon of Newhall d. 1778 and George Home of Wedderburn 17341820. Later corresponding members who contributed essays or correspondence included James Beattie David Dalrymple William Greenfield Robert Henry David Hume bap. 1757 d. 1838 William Richardson William Strahan Alexander Fraser Tytler and his father William Tytler. The publisher and future lord provost of Edinburgh William Creech whose idea it was to publish The Mirror should be considered an ex officio club member since he was the only contact for many of the correspondents. Any forced division between core and corresponding members is somewhat misleading however since Dalrymple Richardson and Alexander Fraser Tytler made a far greater contribution to the club's publications than certain full members. Tytler in fact became one of the club's principal essayists. The Mirror Club's ethical essayswhich copied the form and continued the function of The Spectator 171114 of Addison and Steeleappear to have been well received. Macleod Bannatyne reported that 400 copies of each issue were printed the same number that was recorded in Eminent Scotsmen by William Chambers. This number significantly underestimates the number of actual readers in an age when paper periodicals were widely circulated. Many of the club's essays were printed elsewhere with twenty-three papers and one poem appearing in the Caledonian Mercury the Scots Magazine and The Bee. The bound collection of The Mirror went through eleven editions prior to 1802 and The Lounger six editions before 1805. While no subscription lists have been found acknowledged subscribers included James Beattie William Strahan Dugald Stewart John Home William Richardson Hugh Blair and Jane Gordon duchess of Gordon. The indisputable driving force of the Mirror Club was Henry Mackenzie who from his early years had been groomed by the Edinburgh literati to succeed David Hume as their convivial leader and adjudicator of literary taste. Mackenzie composed 49 of the 110 issues of The Mirror and 62 of the 101 issues of The Lounger. Occasionally he composed several different drafts of a paper that he sent to friends including Adam Smith for comment. He also revised the majority of the essays for publication. Three of Mackenzie's closest friends William Craig Alexander Abercromby and Alexander Fraser Tytler accounted for 68 of the remaining 100 essays. As a microcosm of the Scottish literati the publishing arm of the Mirror Club provides valuable insights into the socio-economic agenda professional background and inter-generational networks of landed and literary lowland society. All club members came from families well connected to Scotland's élite by status interests marriage and profession. They viewed themselves as the legal and literary representatives of Scottish landed society and they believed that a united and enlightened class of landowners could lead the country out of its economic backwater. Along with their teacher and in the case of Mackenzie and Craig their friend Adam Smith the core members of the Mirror Club shared a vision of Scotland as an improving capitalist community where economic and social power was held by the owners of land and where the status quo was strengthened by a complicated system of patronage deployed by Henry Dundas. The agrarian nature of Scottish improvement was strongly endorsed by club members. The liberal Macleod Bannatyne and conservative Abercromby composed a series of essays on the corruption of rural values by urban fashion. Other issues were thinly disguised warnings against the upward mobility of Scotland's urban merchant classes and paeans to the independence and gentility of landowners. On landed estates gentlemen could continue to perform the roles of patriarchs over small leaseholders while maintaining a happy and deferential retinue of servants. This gentrified world was personified by Home and Tytler who preferred to live and write from their estates as well as by Macleod Bannatyne's memorable character Umphraville. A competing interest group within the membership came from the legal profession. Two young lawyer members were George Ogilvie and William Gordon of Newhall though neither published an essay in The Mirror. Gordon died on 11 January 1778 a year before its appearance while Ogilvie died shortly before the initial publication of The Lounger in 1785. George Home of Wedderburn was already establishing himself in Edinburgh's legal community when The Mirror first appeared. He served for more than thirty years as principal clerk of the court of session where he was eventually succeeded by Sir Walter Scott. He was also elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. As befitted his status and seniority in legal circles Home had the privilege of composing the first Mirror essay and later contributed on staple club themes such as the value of social affection and personal cheerfulness see no. 34. In the prominence given to the legal profession the club demonstrated a clear preference for law over the church. Nevertheless clergymen such as John Logan were prominent in the Feast of Tabernacles and the connection between the moderate party of the Church of Scotland and the revival of Scottish belles-lettres was retained in Lounger essays by William Greenfield and Robert Henry. Moreover many Mirror papers including Mackenzie's famous series 'The story of La Roche' nos. 424 advocated religious belief and feeling. In terms of form and style the Mirror Club's offerings were self-conscious imitations of The Spectator Mackenzie proudly earning the epithet of the Scottish Addison. However it is evident that the club also developed the essay genre and championed the new literary form of the novel as the moral preceptor of the modern age. At one level the club's thinking remained parochial and transitional providing advice to a Scottish élite that was distinctly hierarchical and yet sufficiently poor to provide greater social and economic mobility than its English counterpart. But in its literary output the club also aimed to create a revolutionary new paradigm for ethical and cultural analysis by delineating the progress of individual character and passions through the structures of civilized manners formal education and custom. Nowhere was this more forcefully advanced than in the club's re-evaluation of Shakespeare as the creator of unique individuals with complex personalities. The club's attention to the philosophical analysis of Shakespeare was continued by Schlegel Coleridge and Hazlitt to name a few. Improving humane and tolerant the Mirror Club popularized Enlightenment values principally among the Scottish gentry. Yet collaterally the club and its publications provided a far wider readership with an innovative characterization of Scottish identityone that affirmed the ethical and sociable community rather than the uniquely covenanted nation. <p>St. Louis MO: The Ladies of St. Leo's Church 1897. Soft cover. Good. Paperback buff covers with black lettering stapled binding advertisements throughout some contributors' names included 6-1/2" x 5-1/4" 48 pp. Moderate wear. Good condition. The Sodality of Our Lady was a Catholic organization founded in 1563 and had a strong membership in Missouri. In 1913 when Sodalist magazines were directed to be published Missouri would be the publishing center for the United States. The University of Missouri at Kansas City has a Sodalists' Cook Book published in Kansas City 1897 with 63 pages half of which are blank. This cookbook is not dated; the latest date found is a reference to Mrs. Rorer's "1896 Exposition Cooking Lessons." Likely contemporary with the Kansas City production. St. Leo's Church was founded in 1888 in the predominantly Irish neighborhood of Kerry Patch. Many of the contributors are just "Sodalist" though and I would not classify this as an Irish-American cookbook.</p> The Ladies of St. Leo's Church paperback

18 April 1837. In very good condition on one side each of two skins of vellum. Robinson's signature and seal in red wax at the foot of the attached skins and the customary embossed tax stamps on both. Ruled borders in red ink. Docketed on reverse of first skin. The document begins: 'To all to whom these Presents shall come. Moncure Robinson of the City of Philadelphia in the United States of America and now residing in Bond Street in the County of Middlesex in Great Britain Esquire sends Greeting'. The document next discusses 'a Deed Poll or Letter of Attorney under the Common Seal of "The Philadelphia and Reading Railroad company" duly incorporated by that name in the said United States which deed poll or letter of Attorney is also signed by Elihu Chauncey Esquire the President of the said Company and attested by Richard Fenn Lardner their Treasurer and bears date the nineteenth day of November One thousand eight hundred and thirty six'. The document appoints 'Thomson Hankey the elder John Alexander Hankey and Thomson Hankey the younger of Mincing Lane in the City of London Merchants' as the company's agents. Marbled endpapers internally clean and crisp. The sole edition of an anonymous elegiac satirical epitaph upon army officer and politician John 1st Duke of Marlborough who contrary to the title survived until 1722 and indeed would certainly not have been interred at Antwerp given the allied offensive against the city during the recently concluded War of Spanish Succession. The prefatory remarks addressed to the publisher are signed by Thomas Johnson presumably the pseudonym of the unknown author. In those same remarks our author claims membership of the apparently fictional Marlborough Club who desired that he carry out this translation so that 'our own People may see the just Esteem which Foreigners have for the Memory of that Great MAN' a highly ironic proclamation that informs the intention of the epitaph as a whole. John Moore FRSE 1729 1802 was a Scottish physician and travel author. He also edited the works of Tobias Smollett. He was born on 10 October 1729 in Stirling the son of Rev Charles Moore of Rowallan d1735 and his wife Marion Anderson. The family moved to Glasgow in his youth and he was educated at Glasgow Grammar School. He was then apprenticed to Dr. John Gordon in Glasgow 1745 to 1747. After taking a medical degree at Glasgow he served as a Surgeon's Mate with the army in Flanders during the Seven Years' War then proceeded to London to continue his studies and eventually to Paris where became surgeon to the household of the British ambassador there. In 1751 he returned to Glasgow to rejoin Dr. John Gordon also then practising with Dr. Thomas Hamilton. From 1769 to 1778 he accompanied the Duke of Hamilton who was linked to Thomas on a Grand Tour of Europe. On his return he took up residence in London. In 1792 he accompanied Lord Lauderdale to Paris and witnessed some of the principal scenes of the Revolution. His Journal during a Residence in France 1793 is the careful record of an eye-witness and is frequently referred to by Thomas Carlyle. In 1784 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were Andrew Dalzell James Gregory and John Robison. He died in Richmond in Surrey now part of London on 21 February 1802. He is buried in Stirling. His novel Zeluco 1789 a close analysis of the motives of a selfish profligate produced a great impression at the time and indirectly through the poetry of Byron has left an abiding mark on literature. Byron said that he intended Childe Harold to be a poetical Zeluco and the most striking features of the portrait were undoubtedly taken from that character. Moore's other works have a less marked individuality but his sketches of society and manners in France Germany Switzerland Italy and England A View of Society and Manners in France Switzerland and Germany London W. Motorcycle Speedway. Publicity photos each signed by the subject of Norman Parker captain of the Wimbledon Dons and his rider George ‘Huck’ Fynn.
Between 1945 and 1953 when Parker was with the Wimbledon Dons. Each photograph stamped on reverse ‘BCM/SPORTS PHOTOS / LONDON W.C.1.’. Parker was with the Wimbledon Dons between 1945 and 1953 during which time he won three national trophies 1950 1951 and 1953. He also rode in several World Finals. Fynn came over to Britain from Australia and Speedway Star 7 May 2022 contains a biographical feature with photograph on the occasion of his hundredth birthday. A pair of black-and-white prints each on 14 x 9 cm glossy paper. Each with stamp of ‘BCM/SPORTS PHOTOS’ on reverse stating ‘SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHS 6d each’. Both items are somewhat worn and aged with Parker’s dog-eared at the corners not affecting the portrait or signature. Each a head and shoulders shots of the subject staring into the camera with each rider wearing his motorcycle jacket with a jerkins carrying a large star over the top of it. Neither is helmetted and Parker has a white handkerchief and his goggles around his neck. He has signed his photograph ‘N. Parker’ upwards over the right shoulder while Fynn signs ‘Huck Fynn’ over the jerkin. Each photograph is neatly captioned on reverse in pencil. [MURORAN - PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF US FORCES IN HOKKAIDO DURING THE KOREAN WAR].

Japan. 1951. Eight black and white photographs 20.5 x 25.5cm each captioned in Japanese the handmade album is titled and dated in ink 23.5 x 32.8cm 9pp cord ties. One photograph has been removed card leaves and covers are browned surface of upper cover abraded in places some other minor wear but the photographs are in very good condition. A private album containing eight high-quality large-format photographs showing US forces being welcomed to the northern Japanese city of Muroran Hokkaido on 25 April 1951 - at the height of the Korean War. The first two photos show the US forces being welcomed by a local brass band. There is then a shot of US officers and Japanese officials standing under a large sign saying "Welcome Thunderbirds - Muroran City" indicating that the troops being welcomed are from the 45th Infantry Division nicknamed the Thunderbirds one of two US Army National Guard units engaged in the Korean War and recruited largely from the state of Oklahoma. <br> <br>The 45th Infantry Division received their initial training for combat in Korea in the US itself in 1950 and then sailed from New Orleans to Japan in early 1951 arriving at the ports of Otaru and Muroran in Hokkaido April of that year. From there they were sent for further training at Camp Crawford a US military base on the outskirts of the city of Sapporo and at a newly created camp south of Chitose before being transfered to Korea in December 1951. The album also contains two photos of the ships "General C.G. Morton" and "General William Weigel" which were built during World War II and used as a troop transport ship during the Korean War and were presumably among the ships which brought the 45th Infantry Division to Japan. Other images show local officials explaining the geography of the region to US officers as they peruse a large map and a Japanese woman beign presented with a badge by an American officer. <br> <br>Muroran was one of many Japanese ports whose life was transformed by the mass arrival of UN mostly American forces during the Korean War although the town's role in the war is less well documented than the roles of ports like Yokohama Kobe and Sasebo. These pictures give a vivid impression of the Korean war journeys of US troops and of Hokkaido during the Korean War. . unknown

Light occasional foxing first and last pages cover and dustjacket a little worn and trifle sunned. A good copy. This book refers to a Western Han Dynasty tomb in Guangxi known for its well-preserved artifacts including bronze drums lacquerware and silk. Signed Photographic Christmas Card of the Five Percolators Tap and Vocal Harmony Group in Cab Calloway’s Circle Early 1930s
N.p. 1930. Original 4 x 5 inch photographic Christmas greeting card. Gelatin silver studio publicity photograph mounted within printed holiday card stock signed in ink. Minor edge wear; strong tonal range near fine. Studio portrait of the Five Percolators posed in coordinated light suits with dark ties arranged in a low forward-leaning formation common in some early 1930s Black vocal harmony ensembles. The group was active during the early to mid 1930s performing with Cab Calloway—who apparently signed them to begin with out of Buffalo—and others as a downticket act supporting larger acts. The Buffalo Times noted that the Five Percolators “round out Cab’s act on the Buffalo stage†identifying Buffalo as the hometown of members Cliff and Jimmy Moore and stating that the group performed in Buffalo night spots before “hitting out for New York where Cab signed them up.â€1<br /> <br /> The lower portion of the card bears the printed seasonal greeting: “With sincere wishes for your happiness at Christmas and throughout the New Year†with FIVE PERCOLATERS printed at bottom. A bold contemporary inscription reads: “To a beautiful little girl hoping I see more of you — James†likely signed by the aforementioned James or Jimmy Moore. The group usually appeared downticket but newspapers note that they headlined a show in 1933 at the Criterion Ballroom in New Jersey. Contemporary press accounts range from describing them as “percolating harmony and taps with skill†to lamenting “the excessively loud shouting of one of the tall fellows who plays the guitar†in the performance at Calloway’s High Court of Hi-De-Ho show of 1935. Eight Dollars a Day. Written & Dedicated to the Congress of the U.S.
Boston Massachusetts: Olivery Ditson 1848. Folio 14 x 10 ½ inches 5 pp. Slight splitting to covers contents fine very good plus overall. The sheet for the anti-politician polemic “Eight Dollars a Day" which was apparently a crowd favorite at the Hutchinson Family’s performances. The song lambastes the political class and its waste insinuating among other things that the politicians were spending their bloated salary on alcohol: “A flaming speech is made by one when the call is yea or nay But all are agreed with the question comes of Eight dollars a day.†The song was written in 1848 early in the Hutchinson Family’s period moving toward social activism and four years after their most famous abolition-themed compositions.1 Judging by the twelve copies held at libraries this was probably one of the better selling titles in their repertoire from the time period. <br /> <br /> 1 Philip D.
