‎Bir elçinin tarihçe-i sefareti, 1207-1208 (Tarih-i Osmani Encümeni Külliyati, Aded: 3).‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In contemporary black cloth bdg. Modern Turkish lettered gilt on spine. Little stains on top of the first pages. A clean copy otherwise. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Ottoman script. 112 p. Mustafa Rasih Pasha who was one of the important figures of Babiali at the time of III. Selim was sent to the Russia as an ambassador after treaty of Jassy. There are sefâretnâme and arîza about Rasih Pasha's embassy. The works written by Ottoman ambassadors or their assistances about their journeys are called sefâretnâme. The embassy travel and Russian impressions have been transferred into sefâretnâme related to Rasih Pasha's Russian embassy. Rasih Pasha described the social, economic, military, administrative and economic aspects of Russia in detail which are not explained in sefâretnâme in his arîza. These works composed after Rasih Pasha's embassy to Russia have involved very important informations about Russian Empire at the end of XVIII. Century. It is seen that the development of Russia during I. Petro reached to the top towards the end of XVIII. Century time of the II. Catherine. III. Selim as an Ottoman King made use of the arîza written on Russian during his reconstruction movement known as Nizam-i Cedit movement. This book includes memoirs of embassy of Mustafa Rasih Pasha in Russia. Hegira: 1333 = Gregorian: 1917. First Edition. Özege 2277.; TBTK 11603.; 6 copies in OCLC: 21790420.‎

‎[Lincoln, Abraham, 16th President of the United States]‎

‎The Rail Splitter Vol. I No. 16 October 6 1860‎

‎Chicago: Charles Leib 1860. Very Good. Four-page newspaper. A couple of small holes various brown spots and other bits of minor wear A campaign newspaper for Abraham Lincoln in the Presidential Campaign of 1860. We note a half-column story on the front page of this issue that accuses Senator Douglas of being a Roman Catholic -- a charge based partly on the fact that Mrs. Douglas was a Catholic as were their children -- probably an effective charge in largely Protestant mid-19th century America. Our brief research suggests that Douglas was neither a Catholic nor a formal member of any other organized religious group. The purpose of another half-column story on the front page was to make it clear that Lincoln had publicly condemned the actions of John Brown and did not object to Brown's execution. Charles Leib the editor was a political operative with an unclear background who had previously edited a Democratic campaign newspaper on behalf of the Buchanan campaign in 1856. Leib served briefly as an Assistant Quartermaster in the Union Army before heading to New Mexico probably in 1863 and died there in 1865 at the age of 38. Charles Leib unknown‎

‎Edition originale de la traduction due à Stéphane Mallarmé de ce conte naïf, étrange et fantastique qui parut simultanément en anglais sous le titre "The Star of the Fairies".

It was founded in 1850 by John Brett. The Magnetic became the principal competitor to the largest telegraph company in the United Kingdom Electric Telegraph Company the Electric and became the leading company in Ireland. The two companies dominated the market until the telegraph was nationalised in 1870. The company's first objective in 1852 was to provide the first telegraph service between Great Britain and Ireland by means of a submarine cable between Portpatrick in Scotland and Donaghadee in Ireland. The cable core was gutta-percha insulated copper wire made by the Gutta Percha Company. This was armoured with iron wires by R. S. Newall and Company at their works in Sunderland. Before this could be achieved two other companies attempted to be the first to make the connection across the Irish Sea. Despite having the contract to lay the Magnetic company's cable Newall also secretly constructed another cable at their Gateshead works with the intention of being first to get a telegraph connection to Ireland. This Newall cable was only lightly armoured with an open 'bird-cage' structure of the iron wires there was no cushioning layer between the core and the armour and the insulation was not properly tested before laying because of the great hurry to get the job done before Magnetic was ready. This cable was laid from Holyhead in Wales to Howth near Dublin with William Henry Woodhouse as engineer and thence to Dublin via underground cable along the railway line. Laying of the submarine cable was completed on 1 June 1852 by the City of Dublin Steam Packet Company's chartered paddle steamer Britannia of 1825 usually used as a cattle ship and with assistance from the Admiralty with HMS Prospero. However the cable failed a few days later and was never put into service. In July of the same year the Electric Telegraph Company of Ireland tried using an insulated cable inside a hemp rope on the Portpatrick to Donaghadee route. This construction proved problematic because it floated the Submarine Telegraph Company's Dover to Calais cable in 1850 was also lightweight having no protection at all other than the insulation but they had taken the precaution of adding periodic lead weights to sink the cable. It was laid from a schooner Reliance assisted by tugs. The strong sea currents in the Irish Sea much deeper than the English Channel dragged the cable into a large bow and there was consequently insufficient length to land it. The attempt was abandoned. For their cable Magnetic were more careful in testing the insulation of batches of cable than Newall. Coils of cable were hung over the side of the dock and left to soak before testing. They used a new type of battery for insulation testing that was capable of being used at sea. Previously the test batteries had been lined wooden cases with liquid electrolyte Daniell cells. The new 'sand battery' comprised a moulded gutta-percha case filled with sand saturated with electrolyte making it virtually unspillable. 144 cells were used in series around 150 V. Several suspect portions of insulation were removed and repaired by opening up the iron wire armouring with Spanish windlasses. Newall attempted to lay the Sunderland-made cable again using the chartered steamer Britannia in the autumn of 1852. The cable was too taut as she sailed from Portpatrick resulting in the test instruments being dragged into the sea. Several delays caused by broken iron wires as the cable was laid resulted in the ship drifting off course and running out of cable and this attempt too was abandoned. Magnetic were successful with a new cable in 1853 over the same route with Newall this time using the chartered Newcastle collier William Hutt. This was a six-core cable and heavier than the 1852 cable weighing seven tons per mile. At over 180 fathoms 330 m down it was the deepest cable laid to that date. Repairs to the cable in 1861 required 128 splices. Tests on pieces of retrieved cable found that the copper wire used was very impure containing less than 50% copper despite the Gutta Percha Company specifying 85%. The Magnetic's telegraph system differed from other telegraph companies. They favoured underground cables rather than wires suspended on poles. This system was problematic because of the limitations of insulation materials available at the time but the Magnetic was constrained by the wayleaves owned by other companies on better routes. They were also unique in not using batteries which were required on other systems. Instead the operator generated the necessary power electromagnetically. The coded message was sent by the operator moving handles which moved coils past a permanent magnet thus generating telegraph pulses. The Magnetic laid the first submarine telegraph cable to Ireland and developed an extensive telegraph network there. They had a close connection with the Submarine Telegraph Company and for a while had a monopoly on underwater and hence international communication. They also closely cooperated with the London District Telegraph Company who provided a cheap telegram service in London. The Magnetic was amongst the first to employ women as telegraph operators. The English and Irish Magnetic Telegraph Company which was also known as the Magnetic was established by John Brett in 1850. John Pender also had an interest and Charles Tilston Bright was the chief engineer. The company's initial objective was to connect Britain with Ireland following the success of the Submarine Telegraph Company in connecting England with France with the first ocean cable to be put in service. The British and Irish Magnetic Telegraph Company was formed in 1857 in Liverpool through a merger of the English and Irish Magnetic Telegraph Company and the British Telegraph Company originally known as the British Electric Telegraph Company. The main competitor of the Magnetic was the Electric Telegraph Company later after a merger the Electric and International Telegraph Company the Electric for short founded by William Fothergill Cooke. By the end of the 1850s the Electric and Magnetic companies were virtually a cartel in Britain. In 1859 the Magnetic moved its headquarters from Liverpool to Threadneedle Street in London in recognition that they were no longer a regional company. They shared these premises with the Submarine Telegraph Company. The company had a close relationship with the Submarine Telegraph Company who laid the first cable to France and many subsequent submarine telegraph cables to Europe. From about 1857 the Magnetic had an agreement with them that all their submarine cables were to be used only with the landlines of the Magnetic. The Magnetic also had control of the first cable to Ireland. This control of international traffic gave them a significant advantage in the domestic market. Another company with a close relationship was the London District Telegraph Company the District formed in 1859. The District provided a cheap telegram service within London only. They shared headquarters and directors with the Magnetic. The Magnetic installed their lines and trained their staff in return for the District passing on traffic for the Magnetic outside London. The Magnetic founded its own press agency. It promoted its agency by offering lower rates to customers who used it than the rates for customers who wanted connections to rival agencies. In 1870 The Magnetic along with several other telegraph companies including the Electric were nationalised under the Telegraph Act 1868 and the company wound up. Wikipedia hardcover‎

‎[MAJOR] HALIT ZIYA [TÜRKKAN] (?), (Turkish cartographer, scientist, specialist of cadaster), (1886-1966).‎

‎[MANUSCRIPT HAND-COLOURED MAP OF SYRIA - PALESTINE - TRANSJORDAN] Suriye - Filistin - Transjordan.‎

‎Very Good Turkish Original manuscript color map of Middle East including Syria, Palestine and Transjordan. Signed by cartographer. 28x20 cm. In Turkish (with Latin letters). The Mapping Department, which moved to Ankara from Istanbul after the Independence War, settled in the Attar Basi Khan in Koyunpazari and the press section also started its studies in the building which is the Art School in Ulus today. In 1924, the department, which is still inside the General Directorate Garrison, moved to the hut-shaped buildings with single floor between the Military Sewinghouse and the General Directorate. On the other hand, the production of maps and plans, which were to be used in development services carried out in parallel to the revolutions starting with the declaration of the Republic and following each other, was considered to be based on a legal arrangement. Because of the necessity of an urgent legal arrangement, the bill of law concerning to the General Directorate of Mapping, whose preparations were initiated by Lieut. Gen. M. Sevki (Ölçer) who knew the importance of the subject, was sent to the Ministry of Defense at the beginning of 1925. After the approval of Ministry of Defense, the bill, which was sent to the Prime Ministry, was discussed in the Council of Ministers and presented to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. As a result; the Mapping Department was re-organized as the General Directorate of Mapping affiliated with the Ministry of Defense with the law bearing the number 657 on May 2, 1925 in order to do all mapping works and meet the needs of maps and plans of all ministries, institutions and organizations. [.] The first application of photogrammetry was made in Kayas, Ankara with the Wild Autograph plotting apparatus which was purchased in that year. Captain Ömer Kadri and Captain Niyazi came back from their photogrammetry education in Germany. Major Halit and Major Nüzhet were sent to France for photogrammetry education and Captain Ishak and Captain Bahri were sent to Germany. Captain Ahmet (Denkmen) and Captain Ömer Kadri attended the Congress of Photogrammetry assembled in Berlin. (Source: The Illustrated History Of Turkish Cartography). Halid Ziya was born in Izmir, Tire. He went to Istanbul and continued to Hendese-i Mülkiye and Engineer Mekteb-i Âlîsi for seven years. After starting with "Aydin Province Umur-i Nafia Third Class Engineering", Halid Ziya Bey, who continued to work as a deputy chief engineer on 14 March 1910, left Aydin and returned to Istanbul after continuing this duty for about six and a half months. As a teacher, he taught Accounting, Algebra, Geometry, and Topography at Halkali Ziraat Mekteb-i Âlîsi and Darussafaka. Halid Ziya Bey, who was appointed as a teacher of Hendese and Cosmography in Kabatas High School, started to practice the profession of engineering and cadastral, which was his main specialty in 1327. After the First World War, the Istanbul Government started its activities in order to capture and neutralize Halid Ziya Bey and his friends. Upon the harsh measures taken, Halid Ziya Bey had to live as a fugitive in the Hasirci Mountains of Eskisehir for a while with the armed force attached to him. Halid Ziya Bey, who was involved in the movement in Anatolia until the end of the National Liberation Struggle, returned to his engineering duty after the proclamation of the Republic and was included in the cadastral works again. In 1925, Halid Ziya Bey was appointed as the Head of the Science Committee of the new cadastre organization. He wrote 5 books on cadastre, photogrammetry, trigonometry, and cadastral tools in 1928 and 1929. In addition, as a result of personal work in 1928, the road between the provincial division of the Republic of Turkey with cities has prepared a comprehensive map to show up in the forest and mining. ‎The Netherlands 1800. Splendid late 18th-century ca. 1790 gold-tooled red morocco sewn on 4 supports with a smooth spine bound by the so-called Second Dissertation Bindery Leiden ca. 1780-ca. 1794; Storm van Leeuwen IIA pp. 350-358 with 4 closing loops on the front board 1 top edge 2 fore-edge 1 bottom edge connecting to 4 closing knotted buttons on the back board. Both boards show 3 gold-tooled floral frames built up from 2 different rolls with small corner pieces in between the inner frame with 4 larger floral corner pieces and a large lozenge shaped centrepiece built up from multiple impressions of 5 different floral and animal stamps. Further with a gold-tooled spine and board edges gilt edges and marbled endpapers. Large 4to. With 162 signatures on 160 vellum or paper cuttings mostly vellum including 2 cuttings with 2 signatures each mostly from the 17th century some from the 18th century and a few from the early 19th century. Further with one large printed coat of arms of the Wassenaer family on the verso of the title-page an engraving ca. 9.5 x 7 cm showing the house of Jacob Cats on the verso of leaf 34 and with 19 printed coats of arms on the versos of several leaves 16 depicting a coat of arms with the name of the family below and 3 blank shields. The title page headings and captions all in a very neat late-18th-century or early 19th-century cursive script written in Dutch using brown ink. Remarkable collection of 162 signatures of mainly 17th-century 16th- to early 19th century Dutch and international prominent people - from statesmen like Stadtholder Maurice of Orange Count of Nassau etc. and Grand Pensionary of Holland Johan de Witt 1625-1672 royals like King Philip II of Spain 1527-1598 and William III of Orange Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic and later King of England Scotland and Ireland 1650-1702 and government officials like "Griffier" to the States General François Fagel 1629-1746 the most important clerk of the Dutch Republic's government to authors poets and scholars like P.C. Hooft 1581-1627 and Nicolaas Tulp 1593-1674. For each individual mentioned in the present work their signature - on a separate vellum or paper cutting mounted on the recto of the leaf - appears next to a short biographical description. Some biographical descriptions are more extensive than others but two names appear without any further information. The first is Caspar Clotterbooke leaf 30 who is listed as a secretary for the council of the States of Holland in the 18th century 1778. He was born in The Hague in 1720 held several high positions in the councils of Haarlem and the States of Holland as a representative of that city and died childless in 1817. The second is Hendrik Nobel who is listed in the second part among royals statesmen military commanders scholars and others. He lived from 1568 to 1649 and was appointed as "bewindvoerder" administrator or governor of the Rotterdam Chamber of the Dutch East India Company VOC. In two cases one cutting contains two signatures - those of Johan van Hoorn and Abraham van Riebeek appear together as well as those of Adriaan Valkenier and Johannes Thedens; all four were Governor General of the Dutch East Indies resp. from 1704-9 1709-13 1737-41 and 1741-43. In the case of William III two signatures are included for one single individual - the first is his signature as Prince of Orange and the second is his signature as King of England Scotland and Ireland "William R.". The work was bound by the so-called Second Dissertation Bindery in Leiden which was active at the end of the 18th-century between ca. 1780-1794 Storm van Leeuwen. The work was most likely produced as an album with blank leaves to be used as a notebook or scrapbook album of some sort at a later date. The paper used in the album is clearly watermarked throughout for example a lion within a crowned medallion pro patria eiusque libertate countermarked J. Honig & Zoonen. The firm Honig or Honigh Zaandam the Netherlands was active from the late 17th century until the late 19th century but was known as J. Honig & Zoonen during the 18th century. The paper is most likely contemporary to the binding. While several of the cuttings containing signatures are also dated - as part of the signature itself or separately added - these dates represent the exact or otherwise approximate date the particular signature was produced. The majority of the signatures can be traced back to the 17th century but were probably cut from official hence the vellum documents to be sold as collector's items around the beginning of the 19th century. The present work was part of the collection of A.M. van den Broek 1932-1995 an antiquarian book print and art collector from Haarlem. His collection mainly contained works focussed on Haarlem and its surroundings. The present work includes 7 signatures from prominent Haarlem representatives in the "Commons" the council of the States of Holland during the 17th- and 18th centuries. The binding shows very slight signs of wear two scratches on the front board some rubbing along the spine and closing knotted buttons on the back board the gutter of the first and second front flyleaves is slightly exposed without affecting the integrity of the binding. Further with some minor offsetting on the blank versos of the leaves from the signature cuttings. Otherwise in very good condition. A remarkable collection of signatures from mainly 17th century prominent Dutch and international statesmen and other famous people.l Cf. for the binding: Storm van Leeuwen IIA pp. 350-358. hardcover‎

‎[MANUSCRIPT - MAPS - INDONESIA - ISLANDS in the PACIFIC OCEAN].‎

‎Suitte du journal depuis le départ de Manille NIII 1755.‎

‎1755. Manuscript of 24 pages 6 printed maps on cardboard. This wonderful logbook details the journey of a French captain from Manila to the Maluku Islands in today’s Indonesia. The journey took place during the months of March to May of 1755. The captain of the ship recounted with great detail the events of every day of the journey with detailed daily accounts of the weather winds manoeuvres of the ship its departures anchorages and precise coordinates at every point of the journey. The captain furthermore had a keen eye for the geographical and nautical details along the journey. He recounted the exact locations of for example sandbanks and bays where ships and their crews can take provisions and fresh water. The accounts are detailed and captivating: "After our boats were back on board we set sail . in the afternoon to moor under the old Portuguese fort on the Solor island Indonesia the winds for the tide were fresh at 1:34 a.m. . sand and gravel and then I went back to mooring. The pavilion of the fort . the village is under the said fort at 3 cables from us .". The captain goes on to describe the geographical features of the islands as well as other places en route with great detail. Curiously we find inscriptions in Spanish and the names of one don Phelipe Qui who describes himself as “el piloto” and one Padre Don Estevan de Melo. The latter might be identical with Don Estevan Roxas y Melo a native of Lima Peru and secretary to the Archbishop of Manila Rodriguez since 1736. Roxas y Melo was part of the 1751 reconstruction of the Cathedral of Manila working under the auspice of the Italian architect Juan de Uguccioni. The logbook comes with six printed maps partly illustrating the journey of the captain pasted on contemporary cardboard. They depict the Bay of Sulavesi with the city of Bantang Pitcairn the coast of New Guinea the coast of Queensland the Santa Cruz Islands in the present-day Solomon Islands and Alejandro Selkirk Island. The plates stem from the French translation of James Hawkesworth’s An Account of the Voyages Hawkesworth Relation des voyages entrepris par ordre de sa Majesté Britannique actuellement regnante; pour faire des découvertes dans l'hemisphère meridional Paris 1774.Some holes on the first sheet not affecting the text. Small water damage some slighlty affecting the text. Remnants of seals on last page. Otherwise in good condition. unknown‎

‎[MAP OF AIR BASES AND ROUTES IN THE FAR EAST].‎

‎列国の極東航空施策. Rekkoku no Kyokutō kōkū shisaku. Major Nations' Air Plans in the Far East.‎

‎Tokyo.: 誠文堂新光社. Seibundō Shinkōsha. Circa1940. Folding colour map black and white photographic illustrations of aircraft and text on reverse 38.6 x 52.2cm. The two lower left panels are browned some occasional spotting other margins worn along folds. An interesting map. This captivating map designed for children delineates air bases and flight routes surrounding Japan during the late 1930s. It served as a new year supplement within the pages of the children's science magazine "Kodomo no Kagaku" Science for Children presumably issued in the latter part of the 1930s. As events unfolded the Pacific War emerged as an air power-centric conflict and this map adeptly illustrates the strategic positioning of air bases across Asia and the Pacific representing various nations. <br> <br>The map's legend highlights air bases belonging to Britain the US the Soviet Union and France along with their corresponding flight routes. Noteworthy Australian locations such as Melbourne Charleville and Darwin are marked along a primary air route. On the reverse side a comprehensive explanation about air power unfolds complete with a chart detailing the air forces of major nations and their strength as of 1935 which strikingly reveals Japan's relative vulnerabilities. . 誠文堂新光社. ‎[MAP OF ASIA IN THE PACIFIC WAR].‎

‎大東亜戦争放送ニュース聽取用地圖. Daitōasensō Hōsō nyusu chōshuyō chizu. The Great East Asia War. Wireless News Listeners' Map.‎

‎東京. Tokyo.: 日本放送協会. Nihon Hōsō Shuppan Kyōkai. Showa 17 1942. Colour folding map scale 1: 10000000 54.7cm x 79.5cm chronology of building the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere on reverse. Some light browning a little darker at folds and reverse washi repairs to folds on reverse. This colour map of Asia and the Pacific published on 30 January 1942—just one month after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor—offers a striking glimpse into wartime strategy and propaganda. Remarkably despite being produced at the war's outset it accurately anticipated key battlegrounds that would define the conflict. The main map is supplemented by two inset maps: one in the upper right highlighting Japan the Hawaiian Islands and Honolulu and another in the lower left focusing on Singapore with Darwin marked along the lower edge. <br> <br>The reverse side features a revealing chronological chart titled "Building Great East Asia" documenting Japan's military expansion from the 1931 Manchurian Incident through January 1942 as troops advanced across Southeast Asia. Notably two blank rows were intentionally left at the chart's end anticipating future victories to be recorded as the war progressed—a telling detail that underscores the map's dual role as both strategic document and propaganda tool. An interesting map which combines geographical precision with ideological messaging. . 日本放送協会. [Nihon Hōsō Shuppan Kyōkai]. unknown‎
