‎[Music – Hutchinson Family – Abolition] Hutchinson, Jesse; The Hutchinson Family‎

‎Right Over Wrong. Coming Right Along. Song & Chorus‎

‎New York: Horace Waters 1855. Sheet music measuring 10 ¾ x 14 ¼ inches 6 pp. Foxed with wear to edges; very good to excellent. A scarce Hutchinson Family sheet published in 1855 with an abolition theme. The song goes in part:<br /> <br /> “The captive now begins to rise and burst his chains asunder While Politicians stand aghast in anxious fear and wonder. No longer shall the bondman sigh beneath the galling fetters He sees the Dan of Freedom nigh and reads the golden letters…†<br /> <br /> It also discusses alcohol within a larger theme of good triumphing over evil. The song is included in some songsters but this standalone version is quite uncommon with one copy held at Dartmouth. In 1855 the Hutchinson Family Singers continued extensive touring across the northeastern United States presenting concert programs that combined abolitionist songs temperance material and political commentary aligned with reform movements. They had embraced abolitionism as a cause about a decade earlier with a string of compositions including “Get Off the Track†and “The Bereaved Slave Mother.â€. Horace Waters unknown‎

‎New York City: Edwards Music Co. and others 1949. Ten pieces of sheet music see full inventory below. Overall Near Fine. A representative group of sheet music publications by Willie “The Lion†Smith one of the defining architects of Harlem stride piano and a central transitional figure between ragtime-era keyboard traditions and modern jazz performance. Active in New York during the formative decades of twentieth-century jazz Smith developed a powerful pianistic approach combining rhythmic authority harmonic sophistication and improvisational independence becoming widely regarded as a “musician’s musician†and an influential mentor to figures including Duke Ellington.1<br /> <br /> Emerging from the uptown New York scene shaped by pianists such as James P. ‎[OTTOMAN MILITARY MAP of PATAGONIA and FALKLAND ISLANDS: ROUTE of DRESDEN] Alman kruvazörü Dresden'in takîbi ve tahrîbi.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original color map. Elephant folio. (59x75 cm). In Ottoman script. [OTTOMAN MILITARY MAP of PATAGONIA and FALKLAND ISLANDS: ROUTE of DRESDEN] Alman kruvazörü Dresden'in takîbi ve tahrîbi. SMS Dresden cruiser's routes between 1913-1915 (World War 1) on the Patagonian shelf; western shores of South America, Patagonia and Falkland Islands. Dresden spent much of her career overseas. After commissioning, she visited the United States in 1909 during the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, before returning to Germany to serve in the reconnaissance force of the High Seas Fleet for three years. In 1913, she was assigned to the Mediterranean Division. She was then sent to the Caribbean to protect German nationals during the Mexican Revolution. In mid-1914, she carried the former dictator Victoriano Huerta to Jamaica, where the British had granted him asylum. She was due to return to Germany in July 1914, but was prevented by the outbreak of World War I from doing so. At the onset of hostilities, Dresden operated as a commerce raider in South American waters in the Atlantic, then moved to the Pacific Ocean in September and joined Maximilian von Spee's East Asia Squadron. Dresden saw action in the Battle of Coronel in November, where she engaged the British cruiser HMS Glasgow, and at the Battle of the Falkland Islands in December, where she was the only German warship to escape destruction. She eluded her British pursuers for several more months, until she put into Robinson Crusoe Island in March 1915. Her engines were worn out and she had almost no coal left for her boilers, so the ship's captain contacted the local Chilean authorities to have Dresden interned. She was trapped by British cruisers, including her old opponent Glasgow. The British violated Chilean neutrality and opened fire on the ship in the Battle of Más a Tierra. The Germans scuttled Dresden and the majority of the crew escaped to be interned in Chile for the duration of the war. The wreck remains in the harbor; several artifacts, including her bell and compass, have been returned to Germany.‎

‎[National Council for the Prevention of War]‎

‎Small Group of Circulars and Ephemera Published and Circulated by the National Council for the Prevention of War‎

‎Washington DC 1945. Very good. Thirteen items plus three duplicates. Light toning; minor wear and dust soiling. Interesting group of just over a dozen leaflets pamphlets and circulars created and disseminated by the National Council for the Prevention of War NCPW before and during World War II. The organization was founded in 1921 by Congregational and Quaker minister Frederick J. Libby after he worked for the American Red Cross in France following World War I. The NCPW pushed for disarmament and neutrality during the interwar years and for peace after America's entrance into World War II. The present group contains several items from each period as well as some fascinating transitional material such as a mimeograph circular titled "What Peace Organization National and Local Can Do in Wartime" dated eleven days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. A good encapsulation of the council's work during this period. unknown‎

‎The Atlanta Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Presents the Eightieth Celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation‎

‎Atlanta: NAACP 1944. Paperback. Good. Paperback. Single leaf folded to make 4pp. Old folds light chipping else a good example. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century the NAACP observed the Emancipation Proclamation’s anniversary with a distinctive blend of ceremony and purpose. These annual gatherings were set in the familiar spaces of churches school halls and city auditoriums and balanced reverence with resolve. What began as homage to Lincoln’s decree became year by year a pointed reminder that the work of freedom was not yet complete.<br /> <br /> Speakers drew a clear line from 1863 to the present insisting that the Proclamation’s spirit endured only through continued struggle against segregation voter suppression and economic injustice. With choirs sermons and the steady cadence of applause these programs transformed remembrance into an act of renewal reaffirming the NAACP’s place at the center of a freedom still in progress. ‎[NELSON]. [BATTLE OF THE NILE]‎

‎A form of prayer and thanksgiving to almighty God to be used In all Churches and Chapels.on Thursday the Twenty-ninth Day of November 1798 being the Day appointed by His Majesty's Royal Proclamation for a General thanksgiving to Almighty God for the late glorious Victory obtained by His Majesty's Ships of War under the Command of Lord Nelson of the Nile over the French Fleet.‎

‎London: s.n. 1798. 15pp 1. Uncut. Stitched as issued. A trifle creased browned and dust-soiled. An apparently unrecorded edition in original state of a liturgy to be used on the day of national thanksgiving ordered in celebration of the British victory over the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile. Owing to Nelson’s first dispatches being intercepted confirmation of the British victory in the first days of August 1798 - which represented one of the most significant reversals of fortune in the naval Age of Sail securing supremacy of the Mediterranean for the Royal Navy - did not reach England until 2nd October. Jubilant celebrations erupted around the country. The usual databases record numerous variants of the edition published by George Eyre and Andrew Strahan printers to the King. The present edition without any information in the imprint besides the date is seemingly unaccounted for. Intriguingly those editions that are recorded run to only 11pp.; the present issue however contains a 3pp 'Communion Service' evidently not included in other states - perhaps suggesting an edition printed for the use of a specific unidentified parish Not in ESTC. . Quarto. [s.n.] unknown‎

‎Catalogue of Teas Saved from ship Yumchi for Sale at Auction on Monday May 8th 1848. Auctioned by an original stockholder in an early iteration of the New York Stock Exchange‎

‎New York 1848. Pamphlet. Very good overall. Auction catalog for auction held at Judd's Stores by L. M. Hoffman & Co. Wall Street and J. Rudderow & Co. Pearl Street. L. M. Hoffman auctioneer was the well known New York firm named for Lindley Murray Hoffman. The Yumchi and the loss of most of its cargo some 8000 chests of mostly green tea is recorded in Niles Weekly Register 1848 Vol 75 p112.<br /> <br /> The original Hoffman auctioneer firm Hoffman & Seton 67 Wall Street was founded by Martin Hoffman descendant of an early Dutch New Amsterdam family. Martin Hoffman was successful enough to be able to make his son Lindley Murray Hoffman born 1793 and the auctioneer for this sale a Tontine stockholder. The Tontine founded 1793 was an investment in the trading entity which eventually became the New York stock exchange and also the building where early merchants met to do business; only 203 shares were subscribed at $200 a share. Subscribers received a part of the net income of the establishment; their shares became more valuable as the other subscribers died off. The Tontine became known as the Tontine Coffee House and was a precursor to the 1817 New York Stock Exchange.<br /> <br /> The auction catalog lists teas being auctioned off with annotations next to the lot descriptions of the purchaser. The categories identified include Lots Marks Chops Quantity and Descriptions. The teas listed include: Young Hyson Gunpowder Hyson Skin Souchong Oolong and Ningyong. Names of buyers include: Wetmore & Co. Weston & Gray Dennison Wood and Grinnell. 166 lots altogether were auctioned off. Printed with a variety of elaborate type fonts. ‎[New York City]. Office of the Secretary of State Hudson Tunnel Railway Company‎

‎Hudson Tunnel Map and Profil sic. Profile of the first tunnel under the Hudson River with Certificate‎

‎Albany NY: State of New York 1909. First edition. Very good clean copy with long tear repaired on th verso and tiny chips at one fold on map inch tear to fore edge of certificate and along bottom margin. Ink on drafting vellum with colored outlines. 15 x 24 inches. Docket sheet mounted to verso. In 1874 the Hudson Tunnel Railroad Company soon named the Hudson River Railway Company was formed to construct tunnels between Jersey City and Greenwich Village the route originally to be about two miles commencing at a point under the Hudson River in the westerly boundaryline of the state of New York opposite the foot of Clarkson street at the termination of the Hudson Tunnel Railroad Company of New Jersey and thence running by a feasible route under the bed of the river and beneath the surface of the city of New York to a point at or near the westerly side of Broadway between Prince and Eighth streets; from whence the line proceeds via Sixth avenue to Thirty-third street New York but stopped construction well before completion. The assets land partially-constructed tunnels trackage etc. were eventually sold to the newly-organized New York & Jersey Railroad incorporated on February 12 1902 under the leadership of William G. McAdoo who was later U.S. Treasury Secretary and which then became the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad 1906. The original of this profile was drafted in 1891 before the railroad collapsed and the present certified copy was prepared by the Secretary of State's office on February 25 1909 almost exactly one year after the official opening of the tunnel the Pennsylvania Railroad's North River Tunnels the second to burrow under the Hudson did not open until late 1910. The reason that a copy of the map was requested is not known but what is known is that the railroad was seeking to extend the Sixth Avenue line later as well as other related projects. Perhaps the map was needed to settle some land issue or in some legal negotiations as the pencilled word "referee" appears after two sets of initials. The tunnels still carry a heavy load of PATH train commuters between Jersey City and Manhattan. Similar maps are difficult to locate. The closest a printed "Map of Hudson & Manhattan Railroad Hudson tunnel system January 1908" is located at the University of Chicago and the Jersey City Historical Society. ‎Original bound gathering of four programs for film screenings held by The Group for Film Study 1953-1954‎

‎New York: The Group for Film Study 1954. Vintage bound gathering of four programs published in conjunction with four film screenings held by The Group for Film Study GFS between December 27 1953 and February 21 1954. <br /> <br /> Films represented in the programs include "On the Edge" 1949 Curtis Harrington "Le Bijou" 1950 Francis Lee "Etoile de mer" 1928 Man Ray "Night on Bald Mountain" 1934 Alexander Alexeieff "Psyche" 1947 Gregory Markopoulos "The Late Matthew Pascal" 1925 Marcel L'Herbier "Roots of Happiness" 1954 Henwar Rodakiewicz "Swain" 1954 Gregory J. Markopoulos "Cops" 1922 Buster Keaton "Caravan" 1953 Jordan Belson and "Salvation Hunters" 1924 Josef von Sternberg. Of particular note in the programs is a lecture and discussion with von Sternberg himself following the screening of "Salvation Hunters." <br /> <br /> Founded by Gideon Bachmann in 1953 the GFS was an early New York-based film organization with a particular focus on experimental cinema and film history. Legendary Lithuanian-American filmmaker and critic Jonas Mekas with whom Bachmann had attended film courses from Hans Richter at New York City College in 1952 was also an active member of the group and is credited in three of the four programs on offer here. <br /> <br /> While they remained friends Mekas and Bachmann drifted apart in 1955 deciding to focus on different aspects of cinema. Mekas now considered a foundational figure in avant-garde film would go on to publish "Film Culture" magazine and co-found the Filmmakers' Cooperative. Bachmann whose primary interest lay in European cinema and its outsiders would found "Cinemages" magazine and its sister radio program "Film Forum" in 1955. <br /> <br /> The program from February 21 1954 articulates the ethos of the GFS: "The Group for Film Study is a nonprofit membership organization devoted to the study of the film as an art and as a medium of communication. Its programs are designed to further the consciousness of the public to the existence of a cinema of quality and by creating an intelligent and discriminating film audience increase the demand for good motion pictures. . GFS publishes detailed program notes for each film outlining its history and intrinsic value. Film artists of caliber are invited to present their views on various aspects of the cinema. All programs are chosen through careful selection and in consultation with outstanding film authorities." <br /> <br /> Approximately 6 x 9 inches.
