Contemporary black half straight grain morocco or in fact something that is the leathery equivalent of thin gruel masquerading as morocco over marbled paper covered boards titled in gilt to spine. Some scuffing and wear and to the boards and extremities with a couple of places where the thin skin of the leather has chipped away a little strong and tight regardless of cheap production ethics it's a very good little copy. Internally clean and rather artfully printed.<br /> <br /> A rather scathing satire of political standpoints of the day presented through the lens of a 19th century boxing fanatic and through the words of Tom Crib sic All England Champion of the art of bare knuckle boxing between 1808 and 1822 who won 15 title fights and suffered no defeats becoming on of the most famous and influential pugilists in history and the darling of "The Fancy" those gentlemen and not quite so gentle men who were addicted to the pursuit and practice of bare knuckle boxing in the early 19th century. Cribb and his contemporary sportsmen frequently featured in political satire and argument of the time in the guise of "Everyman" figure like the "Man on The Clapham Omnibus" a vague figure who nonetheless personified the thoughts and opinions of the average man in the street. Xuzhou. Circa1970. Black and white photograph of two counter-revolutionaries being paraded through the streets on the back of a truck. Photograph is a little faded with drawing pin marks at corners and a closed tear to left margin. Otherwise in good condition 24.3 x 30.3cm. The offences of which these two unfortunate people were accused of where anti-revolution revisionism and being a chief culprit in suppressing the Cultural Revolution. The photograph appears to have been taken in Xuzhou Jiangxi Province. . unknown

Colour Kuomintang poster featuring five angry people at the top of the poster one with a sharp knife at the ready gazing down at the warlord 張作霖 Zhang Zuolin lower edge. Some creasing two small spots on reverse one of which is visible on the left margin very minor light soiling and wear good. Text in traditional Chinese. Sheet measures 79 x 27.2cm. Zhang Zuolin 1875-1928 the founder of the Fengtian Clique of the Beiyang Army opposed all other warlord military factions. In the years between 1916 and 1928 his Fengtian Army controlled Manchuria now Heilongjiang Jilin and Liaoning Provinces. In November 1926 an alliance between the Fengtian and Zhili factions was formed to counter the advances of the National Revolutionary Army's Northern Expedition. Zhang was appointed as the Generalissimo of the last Beiyang Peiyang government in 1927. During the Northern Expedition the Kuomintang publicly accused Zhang as a national traitor in league with Japan. 'Distr.272. 17.3.1948.' The Hague Netherlands 17th March 1948. 4pp. foolscap 8vo on the rectos of four leaves. In fair condition on aged and worn paper. The first two pages carry the French text 'C.I.J.' and the last two the English text 'I.C.J.'. One page carries instructions for the 'Audience de la Reine des Pays-Bas' 'Audience with the Queen of the Netherlands' and the next carries an 'Annexe a Distr.272' 'Annex to Distr. 272'. The latter is a copy of a letter from Hardenbroek Grand-Master of the Court of Her Majesty the Queen to 'Monsieur le Président of the International Court of Justice Peace Palace The Hague'. The letter formally declares the Queen's intention to receive the Court officials 'who may be accompanied by their wives and unmarried daughters in afternoon dress on March 19th at 5 p.m. at the Huis ten Bosch.' Ordered by The House of Commons to be Printed 25 June 1866. 28 1 pp. 8vo. In fair condition on aged and lightly-worn paper. P. 1 has the drophead title: 'STRAND UNION WORKHOUSE. RETURN to an Order of the Honourable The House of Commons dated 25 June 1866; - for COPY "of the REPORT made by R. B. Crane Esquire Poor Law Inspector to the Poor Law Board after an Inquiry held by him on the 4th and 6th June 1866 into certain Allegations made by Matilda Beeton in reference to the Treatment of the Sick in the Strand Union Workhouse." Poor Law Board 25 June 1866. ENFIELD Secretary.' Beeton was an early whistleblower: she had previously described the appalling conditions at the Rotherhithe Workhouse Infirmary. Among her charges in this case are 'The Theft and Sale of Beer &c. by the Patients and Nurses and the Sale of Milk by one class of Inmates to another' and 'The Badness of the Washing the Drunkenness of the Washerwomen and the Defective Supply of Linen for the Sick'. 'Several cases of a very distressing character are described in the evidence' and among Cane's conclusions after a detailed enquiry are that 'Want of space and of proper accommodation for the sick and want of good nursing and of efficient attendance are now the urgent requisites of this establishment. . There may be reasons why the guardians should feel embarrassed and hesitate to carry out their resolution to build a new workhouse; but there are no reasons that I am aware of which prevent them from at once appointing a sufficient staff of efficient nurses and attendants upon the sick.' Nashville: The McQuiddy Press 1926. First Edition. First printing. Inscribed on front endpaper: "To Nettie Spielman / with best wishes from / Geo. D. Hay "Solemn Old Judge" dated 1933. Tight Near Fine copy lacking the dustwrapper. <br /> <br /> Hay 1895-1968 started his career in print journalism but made his name as a radio personality primarily in Nashville where he was the originator and long-time Master of Ceremonies of the Grand Ole Opry program on WSM from which the venerable live stage variety show at the Ryman Auditorium drew its name. Between musical acts Hay would intersperse comic interludes in the character of "The Solemn Old Judge" a character he had first invented for his column "Howdy Judge" in the Memphis Commercial Appeal. These columns are reproduced here; they are mostly in the form of racist caricature very much drawn from the minstrel show tradition the typical premise being an African-American character appearing in court before a white judge with much white-supremacist hilarity to follow the Black voices written in exaggerated dialect. <br /> <br /> Hay adapted his "Solemn Old Judge" persona to radio along the way establishing the basic character of the popular American "hillbilly" music industry - white southern and racially segregated - that placed country music in direct opposition to the race-mixing socially "degenerate" music of the northern cities especially New York. In the words of sociologist Richard Peterson: "The down home rural card was a good card to play.because there was such fear of what was happening in the cities. There was so much race mixing there was so much jazz there was all kinds of degradation in music. Here was a way of finding a pure unadulterated American music that came out of an Anglo-Saxon background. They Hay and the Grand Ole Opry made up a whole bunch of stuff." quoted in American Public Media "New York Clashes With the Heartland" audio documentary. "Stealing the lunch - Goblins at Table with a Stork Absconding with a Ham. Watercolor and ink on paper signed lower left "G. Guggenheim 1921" and inscribed lower right "Arthur Rackham 09." Image size: 10 ½ x 14 inches 267 x 368 mm.<br /> <br /> Matted framed and glazed. Frame size: 20 ¼ x 24 ¼ inches 515 x 616 mm.<br /> <br /> A lively humorous fantasy watercolor depicting goblin-like figures gathered in a woodland hollow around a picnic table one playing an accordion another tumbling headlong from a burrow. To the left a large stork or pelican makes off with a ham in its beak while mushrooms sprout in the foreground and a wary rodent observes from the right.<br /> <br /> The composition is clearly indebted to the celebrated style of Arthur Rackham 1867-1939 whose grotesques and fairy subjects for Grimm's Fairy Tales 1900; rev. 1909 Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens 1906 and Undine 1909 inspired a generation of copyists and admirers. Although inscribed with Rackham's name and the date "09" this work is not a published Rackham illustration; rather it is a spirited pastiche by G. Guggenheim executed in 1921 consciously echoing Rackham's fairy-tale grotesques.<br /> <br /> Such pastiches were common in the early 20th century when Rackham's style was at its most influential. This piece demonstrates a playful imagination and a deft if more caricatural hand. Title-page printed in red and black on white paper as issued. Eight full page color plates by Arthur Rackham. A Near Fine copy with just the lightest amount of rubbing to extremities and a few leaves with light creases at upper corners.<br /> <br /> Lady Greene was a prolific Irish children's author whose works emphasized moral life lessons. The present work was originally published in 1870 with the subtitle Buy the Truth and Sell It Not: A Tale for the Young; and it tells the simple and uplifting story of two boys who learn the Christian way toward generosity and goodness. Illustrated for the first time by Arthur Rackham the present version of the story is brought to life in vivid Pre-Raphaelite style.<br /> <br /> Arthur Rackham 1867-1939 is perhaps the most acclaimed and influential illustrators of the Golden Age of Illustration. A prolific artist even from his youth Rackham got his start as an illustrator working for the Westminster Budget Newspaper 1892. Over the next few years he took on more and more commissions for children's books hitting his career high in the first three decades of the twentieth century. A meticulously kept richly detailed collection of colour and black and white photographs two self-published spiral-bound books and a manuscript most likely intended to be printed in a similar manner to the two books. <br> <br>The collection consists of: 7 colour photographs and 23 black and white photographs most likely dating from the mid-2000s and measuring 20 x 25.5cm on average; A Week on the Jining-Tongliao Jitong Railway 2004 62pp 29 x 32cm spiral-bound; A Day on the Jitong Railway 2005 56pp 29 x 32cm spiral-bound; and Huanan Forestry Railway 2010 10pp 31 x 34cm leaves inserted into stapled sleeves. Principal focus is on the Jining-Tongliao Railway in Inner Mongolia and captures the railway as it was before its electrification in the 2010s. The two books relating to the railway are carefully captioned in intricate detail and give particular attention to the locomotives pictured and the character of the line's geography. The book relating to the Huanan Forestry Railway is curious for its timing with its photographs having been captured in 2010 - only a year before the railway's final closure and the replacement of its functions by a lorry service. . [RARE PUBLICATION OF US-JAPAN RELATIONS IN THE 1950S].

Japan.: 在日米軍調達部. Zainichi Beigun Chōtatsubu. 1952. 137pp 20.5 x 26.7cm one double sided mimeographed covering letter loosely inserted original pictorial wrappers. Light foxing and browning first and last leaves and on wrappers quite browned on lower wrapper paper spine trifle worn with a small chip at tail. Still a very good copy. This scarce 1952 publication by the US Forces Procurement Department explains in the Japanese language how to engage in business dealings with the US Forces in Japan. A cover letter also printed in Japanese signed by Edward W. Sawyer is loosely inserted in the publication. Sawyer was the commanding officer of the Japan Procurement Agency at the time. During his military career he had received an MBA from Harvard and was knowledgeable in handling business. In his cover letter Edward Sawyer emphasises that it is not necessary to engage an agent in order to obtain contracts from the US Force as long as business processes are followed properly. <br> <br>The occupation of Japan formally ended when the San Francisco Peace Treaty became effective in April 1952. However by that time the Korean War had broken out and some 250000 US troops remained stationed in Japan. During the Korean War US procuments in Japan totalled over $3.5 million in value and had a major impact in stimulating the revival of the postwar Japanese economy. Many thousands of Japanese workers were also recruited to play auxiliary roles with the US military in Japan and Korea. This volume gives a fascinating insight into the way in which the system operated on the ground. <br> <br>The opening section describes the structure and operations of the US military procurement process. The text then goes on to explain the steps involved in signing a contract with the US military and the inspection and payment process which will occur when the work is complete. This is followed by a "question and answer" section taking potential suppliers through such things as the details of the process of bidding for contracts the raising of finance to complete contracted work and payment arrangements. The explanations are evidently designed to help agents recruiting labour for work with the US forces as well as for suppliers of raw materials and manufactured goods. The volume includes a sample contract inspection report and invoice all in English as well as Japanese. <br> <br>The striking cover design shows a pair of scales balancing military equipment on one side and documents contracts on the other poised on top of a map of Asia and America. The image seems aimed to reassure suppliers of the fairness of the US military's dealings with with business. An image of Mt. Owen and Major Howard Edmonds both officers photograph portraits are located in the book. The inscription on the right front flyleaf reads - "Dear Charles III Your old Auntie would like you to have this book. The pages marked are a brief official record of your Great Grandfather part in the Civil War. He was a wonderful man I knew him and loved him very much. signed Major Howard Edmunds Col. 3rd Pa. Cavalry." Written on the front blank end sheet is a note - "Col. Samuel Owen was your great grandmothers Father." The illustration on preliminary page iv shows 4 soldiers playing "Reveille" with an arrow pointing to one the soldiers with the statement "Major Edmonds he looked like this! 1861". Full-page illustration of the 'Metropolitan Free Church Federation Eisteddfod 1926. Grand Bardic Chair Presented by John Weir Esq.' A curious mixture of pagan and Christian. A brief 'Foreword' explains how the poem won the 'Great Bardic Chair Competition 1926' giving the judges' names and describing the presentation at 'the Central Hall Westminster February 11th 1926' 'The Rev. Elvet Lewis M.A. Arch Druid conducted the proceedings.'. A cut above McGonagall the poem consists of 36 12-line stanzas. The following extract is pretty representative: 'With Afric's unguents such as could be found The body they embalmed with anxious care That Britain's son might lie in British ground From whence he went for Christ to do and dare.' Two newspaper cuttings of obituaries laid down inside the front wrap: the first dated 9 May 1936 headed 'Death of the Rev. G. W. Keesey Well-known Congregational Minister'; the second headed 'East London's Congregational "Bishop". Rev. Keesey Memorial Service'. COPAC only lists copies at the British Library and the Bodleian.
