Generally very good or better. <br /> <br /> Scientology incunabula from the very beginning of the religion being the first four issues of this newsletter.  Articles from Perry A. Chapdelaine John J. Robinson Fred S. Boyd Clifton Amsbury H. R. "Wing" Angell and other early proponents of Hubbard's church.  <br /> <br /> Chapdelaine 1925-2015 was an important figure in the early years of Scientology being an associate and auditor of Hubbard's.  He like LRH also wrote science fiction.  Right before this newsletter was published Hubbard had rented an office in Denver for the Allied Scientists of the World which was according to a Perry interview "a complex Hubbardian scheme designed to end war and to bring about the first Dianetic community."  Perry was involved in this effort issuing publications and running the office.  The foundation was short lived and Perry was soon invited to audit at the new center in Phoenix.<br /> <br /> <br /> We find little record of this newsletter with just a few mentions of "The Communicators" in various other Scientology publications from the same time.  OCLC shows no holdings.  For that reason we could reasonably guess the newsletter only lasted these four issues perhaps before evolving into a different publication at a later date.  . With half-titles in each volume. 8vo handsomely bound in vellum over blue paper-covered boards with the publisher's original printed paper labels on the spines top edge gilt others untrimmed xvi 315; 332; 370 pp. A set in beautiful condition the text fresh and as pristine but for a bit of the typical mellowing or occasional age evidence. The bindings are sturdy and strong and show little wear or use a little bit of spotting from age to the bindings publisher's printed labels are fresh and very legible. Ownership signature of James Buchanan unobtrusively at top of the titlepage and stamp of the Bellfield Library on each title-page and occasionally at chapter openings no other markings within hard-to-see evidence of small circular shelf labels once being on the spine tops. FIRST EDITION OF A SCARCE AND EXCELLENT WORK THIS SET IN UNCOMMONLY FINE AND WELL-PRESERVED CONDITION and with all half-titles as is often not the case. Sir Walter Scott was considered to be the inventor of the historical novel and the success of his Waverley series was immediate and long lasting throughout the English speaking world.<br> Set shortly after the English Civil War WOODSTOCK was inspired by the legend of the Good Devil of Woodstock which in 1649 supposedly tormented parliamentary commissioners who had taken possession of a royal residence at Woodstock Oxfordshire. The story deals with the escape of Charles II in 1652 during the Commonwealth and his final triumphant entry into London on 29 May 1660. David Hume's HISTORY OF ENGLAND gave Scott most of the historical background.<br> As with all the Waverley novels prior to 1827 WOODSTOCK was published anonymously. First Edition RARE in original printer's boards. 8vo original printer's pressed paper boards backed in brown paper with original printed paper labels on the spines edges untrimmed. 319; 328; 331 4 ads pp. Rare in the publisher's original boards with no hint of sophistication or repair whatsoever. The text untrimmed and very fresh through near to completely free of foxing and age the boards quite clean and well preserved some minor cracking to the brown paper at the joints. RARE FIRST EDITION IN THE PRINTER'S BOARDS THIS COPY IS IN FULL CONTEMPORARY STATE. It is also one of the author's less commonly seen though perhaps less well remembered major works. REDGAUNTLET is one of Scott's Waverley historical novels and is set in Dumfries Scotland in 1765. It is in many ways the most autobiographical of his novels as its two young heroes Alan Fairford and Darsie Latimer reflect the duality of Scott's own character. The novel describes the beginnings of a fictional third Jacobite Rebellion. While the plot is of course fictional it was according to an introduction by Scott written in the 1830s inspired by a genuine visit by Bonnie Prince Charlie to London in 1750.<br> One of the highlights of the novel is "Wandering Willie's Tale" which appears frequently as a stand-along short story in Scottish literary anthologies. Wandering Willie is a wandering musician and the narrator of the tale. It is a ghost story with the climax being an encounter between Willie's grandfather Steenie Steenson and the ghost of his landlord Robert Redgauntlet. A scarce handbill inviting the recipient to the home of the chairman of the Black Panther Party Bobby Seale. It promotes an upcoming conference for the United Front Against Fascism or UFAF that was to be held July 18-20 1969. Attendees could purchase a barbecue dinner for $4.00 the equivalent of about $35.00 in today's money to raise funds for the anti-fascist conference that would ultimately draw a crowd of over 5000 protestors. Gilt title vignette on spine damaged. 20 p. <p><br /> A bibliographically unrecorded early sixteenth-century French book about royal ordinances regarding the commonwealth along with the French translation of Sultan Selim I's letter of conquest fethname addressed to the Grand Master of Rhodes. <br /> <p><p><br /> The first and major part of the book presents nine concepts of orders of Francis I 1494-1547 King of France from 1515 until his death regarding the commonwealth chose publique. The drafts concern such topics as the commerce of spices and drugs wool cloth and other goods chapter 1-4 the weights and equivalents of coins and the recognized foreign currencies chapter 5 the recognized units of measures chapter 6 the regulation of the extravagance of clothing chapter 7 the inn trade chapter 8 and the money that goes to Rome for obtaining Bulls chapter 9. <br /> <p><p><br /> The second section comprises the responses to the aforementioned concepts of the representatives of the Good Cities Bonnes Villes Provence and Dauphiné who had been previously assembled in Paris by the order of the King in March 1516. In most cases they requested a delay of reply to discuss the matters with those who they were representing.<br /> <p><p><br /> The third section presents the grievances and requests delivered to the King by the delegates regarding the provincial councils conciles provinciaux the prolixity of the trials the tariffs the public officers the superior courts cours souveraines the land taxes tailles and the abuse and plunder by the soldiers crossing the kingdom. <br /> <p><p><br /> These sections were recorded and written down by the court clerk Jean Hesselin Seigneur of Girodon. Hesselin mentions himself twice p. 14 and 17 once by name p. 14 within the text.<br /> <p><p><br /> The final part is the French translation of the Ottoman Sultan Selim I's fethname letter of conquest sent on 27 August 1516 from Aleppo to Fabrizio del Carretto 1455-1521 Grand Master Magnus Magister of the Knights Hospitaller in Rhodes between 1513 and 1521. The fethname accordingly to its genre details Selim's expedition and the conquest and emphasizes the power and grandeur of the Sultan and his army. <br /> <p><p><br /> Selim I 1470-1520 ascended the throne as the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in 1512. He is remembered for the enormous expansion of the Empire during his reign thus raise the Ottomans to the leaders of the Muslim world. Selim's most notable deed was the conquer of the Mamluk Sultanate which included Levant Hejaz and Egypt in 1516 and 1517 at the Battles of Marj Dabiq and Ridaniya.<br /> <p><p><br /> The Battle of Marj Dabiq near Aleppo took place on August 24 1516 where Selim defeated the Mamluk Sultan Al-Ashraf Qansuh al-Ghuri. This was a decisive victory of the war between the Ottoman Empire and the Mamluk Sultanate which ended in the conquest of much of the Middle East. Such an expansion of the Ottoman territory was a clear threat to Rhodes which was the nearest Christian possession to the coast of Asia halfway between Constantinople and Egypt. At the time the Grand Master in Rhodes was the Italian admiral Fabrizio del Carretto 1455-1521; Grand Master from 1513 to 1521 for a short interlude of a course of fifty-five years of Frenchmen serving as the supreme heads of the Order. Selim announced his victory and forecasted his threat to del Carretto in a fethname presented here in French translation however eventually he did not have the time to conduct the campaign against Rhodes. It was his successor Suleiman I who conquered the island in 1522 thus gained control over the eastern Mediterranean for the next centuries. By the time of the siege the commander of the Order was again a Frenchman Grand Master Philippe Villiers de L'Isle-Adam 1464-1534. Suleiman allowed him and the surviving knights to leave unmolested and eventually the Hospitallers were quartered permanently on Malta in 1530.<br /> <p><p><br /> To the best of our knowledge the original fethname has not survived and we could not trance any other printed version or edition of the French translation. Issued unsigned the Nobel laureate's first separate publication issued as "Fabian Tracts No.2" when he was 28 years old; Shaw was elected a member of The Fabian Society the British socialist organization still in operation today on September 5 1884. Wise notes that "In 1843 when advertising the present pamphlet for sale Rodd asserted that it was a facsimile reprint of an alleged original edition of which the author was said to have printed twenty copies in 1816. No example of this mysterious original has ever been unearthed . My own opinion is that no original ever existed . The motto 'We pity the plumage but forget the dying bird' was taken by Shelley from Paine's 'Rights of Man' 1817 Pt.I p. 24 'He Burke pities the plumage but forgets the dying bird'. This clearly denies any impression of the address dated 1816". The pamphlet decries the difference between the public concern for the death of the Princess and their indifference to the plight of the poorest in society plus ca change and also examines the execution of the leaders of the Pentrich Rising. Excellent condition with only minor signs of wear. Mimar Koca Sinan c. 1489-1588 the ‘Great Architect Sinan’ was appointed chief royal architect to the Ottoman court by Sultan Suleyman I in 1539. During his fifty-year career he designed and constructed hundreds of buildings including mosques palaces harems chapels tombs schools almshouses madrassahs caravanserais granaries fountains aqueducts and hospitals. His distinctive architectural idiom also left its imprint over the terrains of a vast empire extending from the Danube to the Tigris and he became the most celebrated of all Ottoman architects particularly renowned for his influence on the cityscape of Istanbul. Sinan's most influential buildings were his mosque complexes where his inventive experimentation with light-filled centralized domes often compared with parallel developments in Renaissance Italy produced spaces in which the central dome appeared weightless and the interior surfaces bathed in light. In this monumental new study Gülru Necipoglu argues that Sinan's rich variety of mosque designs sprang from a process of negotiation between the architect and his patrons rather than from unrestrained formal experimentation as has been previously described. The author is the first to use published and unpublished primary sources to illuminate the cultural setting in which Sinan's monuments were produced received and experienced. The author describes how Sinan created a layered system of mosque types reflecting social status and territorial rank shaped by ideas of identity memory and decorum. Seen from this perspective Sinan's works with their highly standardized pattern of forms used in ingeniously varied combinations acquire dimensions of meaning that have not been previously recognized. ‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) First and Only Edition of this extremely rare first user guide for the Ottoman market for a sewing machine manufactured by the Singer Company. This richly illustrated user guide in Ottoman Turkish, printed for "28 K" model (manufactured in 1882) of Singer sewing machines includes numerous diagrams showing the parts of the machine and threading the needle, sewing techniques, using the belt wheel and foot pedal, measuring techniques, the thickness of needles and threads, and how to detect and avoid counterfeits of the brand. In Ottoman Empire, Singer sewing machines were initially started to be offered for sale in Constantinople and Smyrna (today's Istanbul and Izmir) in the 1880s, soon after Isaac Merritt Singer & Company was incorporated with Edward B. Clark, Attorney-at-law from New York in 1851. The company opened its first dealer/dealership in the last period of the Imperial Ottoman at Cadde-i Kebîr [i.e. Istiklâl Street] in Pera, and became the first foreign company to open a dealer/dealership and issue an invoice in Turkey. As the first company to use the "direct marketing" method, Singer went to mountain villages in Turkey, together with its salespersons, instructors, and technicians, who were in charge of showing and informing people on how to use Singer sewing machines, for many years. Singer was the first company to prepare user's guides, to provide extensive service, to initiate the practice of "Guarantee Coupon", to deliver training on sewing - embroidery, and to introduce gas stoves and ovens to Turkish people. In addition, Schneidertempel (Tailors Synagogue), which was founded in 1894 by Mayer Schönman, who was the tailor of Sultan Abdulhamid II in the Ottoman palace, and the head of the tailor's guild at that time, broke the monopoly of male tailors in the Ottoman Empire and led the way for every woman to do sewing at home. At the beginning of the 20th century, free sewing courses for women started to be organized by Singer in Turkey. ABOUT ZELLICH PRINTING HOUSE: Antonio Zelic (Zellich) of Brela was one of many Dalmatians who left his homeland in pursuit of a better life during the 19th century. However, instead of going west, he set out toward the East, to the Ottoman imperial capital - Istanbul. Upon arrival in the city on the Bosphorus, Zelic found employment at the first lithographic print house founded by Henri Cayol in the Ottoman Empire. In 1869, Zelic opened his own lithographic print house called "Zellich and Sons" (A. Zellich et fils). His descendants continued his work with great success, and the Zellich Print House, now known as "Zellich Brothers" (Zellich frères), became one of the most renowned in the Empire. The Zellich Brothers won recognition due to the high quality of their products, and, above all, the amazing beauty of their postcards and posters. Their crowning achievement was an order for the printing of the Ottoman Turkish Lira banknotes in 1914. The Zellichs received many Ottoman and international awards, including medals conferred by the Pope, the Persian shah, and the Serbian king.". The significance of the page according to The Times resides in the fact that it 'contains Patrick Ford's own account of the various "funds for patriotic objects raised by the Irish World during the past eight years" with the formal acknowledgments of the recipients and what purports to be an "audit" of some of the moneys received and disbursed.' Aged and worn but in fair condition considering its ephemeral nature.
