1875. Gibson & Sons Penzance & Scilly Isles. Three striking unfamiliar photographs the last two in particular excellent compositions of a significant historical event. The three slides are bound in 8 cm glass squares with none of the glass shattered and the images themselves in good condition clear and unfaded. Each mount carries the stamp of the photographers Gibson & Sons. With numbered labels carrying a shelfmark. Each mount titled in manuscript. ONE: ' Schiller" wreck. Lifeboat in which Survivors came ashore'. Shows the white lifeboat with 'SCHILLER' and 'HAMBURG' on the bow on a beach with the background showing sailing ships in the bay. TWO: ' "Schiller" wreck - Digging the last graves. <> Scilly'. Striking composition showing five workmen toiling among stones before a country wall in front of which appears to be a long row of wooden markers. Stone building and horse in background. THREE: 'Schiller wreck at Scilly. A Funeral.' Strking composition show a large group of people one lady with an umbrella gathered around a country grave with metal railings with a stone building behind. The Schiller has been dubbed in the title of a 2001 book by Keith Austin 'The Victorian Titanic'. It is said that the German army in both world wars were instructed to spare the Scilly Isles in recognition of the inhabitants' assistance to the survivors of the wreck. Counting Jan de Bont and Robby Müller among its members the 1 2 3 Group opposed the concept of the auteur with each person in the group serving variously as writer director actor and more on each production. The collective is perhaps best remembered today for "The White Slave" 1969 co-written by Koolhaas and Daalder.<br /> <br /> Self wrappers. On the last page the 18-30 Conference is described as 'a consultative body' inaugurated in November 1946 'established in recognition of the need to provide a forum for discussion on the interests of young citizens in the manifold activities of national life'. Henriques' paper is on pp.3-4 with pp.5-6 carrying 'some opinions of National Service by the conscripts themselves'. Copies of any issues of this magazine are extremely scarce with the only entries on COPAC at Oxford Cambridge the National Library of Scotland and the British Library. The Alien Office Whitehall. Eleven Manuscript Affidavits sworn and signed by emigrants from Europe before six London magistrates including Sir George Farrant and David William Gregorie who also sign.
Alien Office Whitehall. Between 1824 and 1829. All but the last at the London police offices at Bow Street Great Marlborough Street Hatton Garden Queen Square. An interesting collection of eleven items from the reign of George IV giving a view of administration of immigration in London and one item from Manchester Number Six below. The Alien Office was created as a department of the Home Office to implement the Aliens Act 1793 which attempted to control the influx of foreign visitors and refugees caused by the turmoil in France. It ceased to exist following the Registration of Aliens Act 1836. created to control the influx of French refugees and suspected revolutionaries. The present collection of eleven affidavits all signed and witnessed dates from between 1824 and 1829. The material is in good condition lightly aged and worn with one item creased along one edge. Nine of the items are each 1p 4to; the other two Items One and Three are each 1p landscape 8vo. The final item is sworn before two army officers see Eleven. The other ten are signed before the following magistrates at the named police offices: William Beckett Bow Street Three; Sir George Farrant Great Marlborough Street Two; David William Gregorie Queen Square Six Eight and Ten; Edward Markland Queen Square One and Seven; William Lorance Rogers Hatton Garden Nine; William Archibald Armstrong White Queen Square Four and Five. Philadelphia: The American Sunday-School Union 1873. Hardcover. Very good. Square octavo unpaginated about 150pp. Very good in the original 3/4 black calf over marbled boards with four simple gilt rules on the spine. A wonderful example of a 19th century librarian's tool. The printed introduction to this blank ledger book begins as follows: "In the plan of this book it is arranged that the Librarian may keep the accounts with the scholars but deliver the books to the Teachers by means of the "Library Cards" and the Teachers deliver them to the scholars." There are two sample designs for these "library cards" printed in the volume though the cards themselves designed to be used with this register were issued separately and are not included herein. Many leaves were used by a Sunday School class though it's not quite clear whether it was used for the intended purpose. The earliest pencilled date is in 1873 and the last in 1885. With no printed date we would suppose that the book was published ca. 1872-3. An advertisement for "E. S. German's Religious Book Store" in Harrisburg PA is pasted to the front paste-down and it seems likely this is where the book was purchased. We could locate no holdings in OCLC for a ledger with this title and we have not seen another in commerce. The American Sunday-School Union hardcover

The sisters were frequently paired with the Ritz Brothers a comedy musical group also contracted with Universal. <br /> <br /> From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1 1901 Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935 where he worked well into the 1950s.<br /> <br /> 10 x 8 inches. Hertford: Printed by Stephen Austin and Sons 1873. Hardcover. g to vg-. Quarto. 11 1/4 x 8 3/4". 7 1 12pp. Period full pebbled green morocco with elaborate gilt tooling and ruling on covers. 7 pages of text in English left to right followed by 12 pages in Persian right to left. Lavishly decorated binding with Islamic motifs produced by the publisher Stephen Austin and Sons. Each page contains elaborate decorative borders in gilt along with either red or purple framing the text. Title page includes a printed image of the Qajar Dynasty coat of arms with the Lion and Sun motif.<br /> <br /> This extremely scarce text printed in both English and Persian was presented by a delegation of the Anglo-Jewish Association to Nasar al-Din 1831-1896 the fourth Shah of Qajar Iran during an audience at Buckingham Palace on June 24th 1873. An exceedingly lavish copy of the bound text was gifted to the Shah which included the Qajar Dynasty coat of arms inlaid to the middle of the front cover and was signed by the members of the delegation in the area following the end of the Persian text. According to contemporary reporting in the Jewish Chronicle the English text was translated into Persian by a Syd Abdullah. Our book is one of a very limited but unknown number of additional copies of this bilingual text likely printed for the members of the delegation and/or other members of the Shah's entourage. It is possible than less than 10 of these additional copies were produced and we have currently only been able to confirm one other extant copy.<br /> <br /> The Shah's visit to the United Kingdom was part of his European tour of that year which was significant in that it marked the first time a modern Persian monarch had traveled to the continent. On numerous stops in various cities throughout Europe the Shah was presented with Jewish appeals from local representatives of their respective communities advocating for the improvement of the conditions of the Jews in Iran. Most notably in addition to the British Jewish delegations in June the Shah met with a member of the Rothschild family likely Baron Alphonse de Rothschild and Adolphe Crémieux head of the Alliance Israélite Universelle in Paris in July.<br /> <br /> On the 24th of June two delegations of prominent members of the British-Jewish community visited the Shah at Buckingham Palace for the same purpose. The first group consisted of members of the Board of Deputies of British Jews comprising Sir Moses Montifiore Joseph Meyer Montefiore Morris S. Oppenheim and Sir Joseph Sebag-Montefiore. The second delegation who presented this text was from the Anglo-Jewish Association and comprised Sir Julian Goldsmid Sir John Simon Baron George de Worms Frederick David Mocatta Reuben David Sassoon and Herbert G. Lousada. <br /> <br /> In the text here presented to the Shah the delegation of the Anglo-Jewish Association states that advocacy on behalf of our "brethern-in-faith" in promoting their "moral social and intellectual well-being" is the organization's aim. Presented is a list of eight grievances on behalf of the Jewish community of Iran relating to their systemic religious legal and economic persecution in the country often originating in the long held pervasive Islamic belief in the ritual impurity of Jews. Ideas for increased civil rights and economic opportunities for Jews are advanced in the text with specific remedies for some these issues proposed especially in regard to taxation and prejudice in the judicial system. The history of anti-Semitic persecution in Europe and the subsequent emancipation of Jews in the modern period is held up as an example for an enlightened ruler. Jewish contributions to broad social improvements and economic success in their respective countries is discussed as a positive result of such changes. The text extolls their "industry energy and integrity" as well as "their loyal devotion to their sovereign and their country. There is scarcely a trade profession or art in which they do not excel; and in the various spheres of intellectual distinction the countries of Europe derive a considerable portion of their renown from the activity and perseverance of their Jewish citizens." The tone of the text consistently appeals to the just enlightened and modern nature of the Shah and draws a clear lineage of rule between Cyrus the Great of the ancient Persian Empire liberator of the Jews and the then current monarchy of Iran.<br /> <br /> Bilingual text in English and Persian.<br /> <br /> Binding with some rubbing to extremities especially corners. Minor scratches and stains to the back cover. Interior with some smudging to the endpapers. Ex-libris ink stamps at the bottom of the interior covers. Starting after the eigth page in between the two sections. Binding in good interior in very good- condition overall. Ex-libris ink stamps of Dr. Eugen Meyer. A card with printed text 'Ex-libris Eugen Meyer' and some notes in ink below laid in. In very good condition on lightly-aged and worn paper. Designed to be placed on a barrack wall but with no evidence of having been put up. A striking piece of graphic design with a boldly-coloured map beneath a thick green curving masthead on the front and another black and white map in the bottom left-hand corner. Headings to the text read: 'Churchill's Return' 'The Russian Tide' 'The Nazi Line' 'After Tunisia . . .' 'The Solomons' and 'The U-Boats' together with two photographs and an advertisement 'Britain Calls Her Armies' for 'Army Week' on the B.B.C. 28 February to 6 March 1943. The reverse carries 23 black and white photographic illustrations under the heading '25 Years of the Red Army' with sub-headings 'The Birth of the Red Army' 'Between Two Wars' 'Partners of the Red Army Man' 'The Red Army's A.B.C.A.' 'The Red Army of Liberation'. Central quotation from Stalin and table at foot giving the 'Percentage Increase of Red Army and Air Force'. Black and white map entitled "Map of the Territory with which La Crosse has Business Relations Showing its Unexcelled River and Railroad Facilities." Another black and white map is entitled "Map Of The City Of La Crosse." Financial Statistics of commercial and industrial activity showing how La Crosse Wis. has grown. Much information about La Crosse encouraging the potential homesteader all the features of desirable country residence and opportunities for culture. The municipal improvements of the year comprise about three miles additional water mains about six miles added to our sidewalks nearly two new brick school-houses extended sewerage a new city building et. al. All of these cost money but it would be difficult to find a tax-payer unwilling to admit their necessity. All of our public improvements have met with some opposition at their inception but time has always proved the wisdom of those who promoted them. The energy and watchful economy of the committee and Board of Public Works who carried the wishes of the Council into effect the skill of the architects who planned it and the integrity of the contractors who built it. The following railroads sought access to La Crosse and strove for a share of its growing business: the Green Bay & Minnesota the Chicago & North-Western the Chicago Clinton & Dubuque and the river division of the Chicago Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway. Black and white photographs include the "Foot Bridge Across The Mississippi;" "City Hall;" "Methodist Church;" "Catholic Cathedral;" "Chicago Milwaukee & St. Paul Depot;" "La Crosse National Bank;" a fold-out view of "Sawyer & Austin Lumber Company's Plant;" "La Crosse Plow Works;" "Tillman Bros. Furniture;" E.R. Barron & Co. along with numerous homes businesses churches banks etc. Letterhead from E.R. Barron & Co. Dry Goods And Carpetings laid in. Moderate wear to wrappers and spine along with the last few pages of the booklet are loose from the staples. Good quality photographs else good copy of a booklet.
