The theatre is famous for its interior design including the Indian-inspired foyer with sitting Buddhas and domed ceilings presented in the photograph on offer. Most scheduled sailings were overnight sailings landing in the morning after departure. The line operated from 1868 to 1951 and is often referred to as the owner of many of the Great Lakes' best "floating palaces" and "honeymoon ships." The last three paragraphs relating to Palmer's incarceration at Newgate have been crossed through but are still entirely legible indicating that the present copy was distributed after her release. Begins: 'THE following case was reported in the Times of the 15th January 1869:- CENTRAL CRIMINAL COURT JAN. 14. OLD COURT. Before Mr. Justice KEATING. Sarah Palmer 40 was indicted for feloniously wounding James Palmer with intent to do him grievous bodily harm. .' Translation of Rok w Treblince. <br> <br> Jankiel Yankel Yaakov or Jacob Wiernik 1889-1972 was a "Polish-Jewish Holocaust survivor who was an influential figure in the Treblinka extermination camp resistance. He had been forced to work as a Sonderkommando slave worker there where an estimated 700000-900000 people mostly Jews were murdered. After his escape during the uprising of 2 August 1943 Wiernik reached Warsaw and joined the resistance. He also wrote a clandestine account of the camp's operation A Year in Treblinka which was copied and translated for printing in London and the US in English and Yiddish.<br> Following World War II Wiernik testified at Ludwig Fischer's trial in 1947. He left Poland emigrating first to Sweden and then to the new state of Israel. In 1961 he testified at Adolf Eichmann's trial in Jerusalem. He returned to Poland in 1964 to attend the opening of the Treblinka Memorial. Wiernik died in Israel in 1972 at the age of 83.<br> On his arrival at Treblinka aboard the Holocaust train from Warsaw Wiernik was selected to work as a Sonderkommando; otherwise he would have been immediately gassed and killed that day. Wiernik's first job with the Sonderkommando required him to drag corpses from the gas chambers to mass graves. He was traumatized by his experiences and later wrote in his book: 'It often happened that an arm or a leg fell off when we tied straps around them in order to drag the bodies away.'<br> He remembered the horrors of the enormous pyres where '10000 to 12000 corpses were cremated at one time.'<br> He was also encouraged by occasional scenes of brave resistance. In chapter 8 he describes seeing a naked woman escape the clutches of the guards and leap over a three-metre high barbed wire fence unscathed. When accosted by a Ukrainian guard Trawniki on the other side she wrestled his machine gun out of his grasp killed the guard and shot another guard before being killed herself.<br> When the SS recognized that Wiernik was a professional carpenter they put him to work constructing various camp structures including additional gas chambers. Given his skills Wiernik was not subjected to the same treatment as others and no longer had to handle dead bodies. He attributed his survival to being able to build structures needed in the camp. Given the shortage of skilled construction workers accustomed to the killing process Wiernik moved between the two divisions of the camp frequently. As a result he became an important contact between the camp zones when the revolt was being planned.<br> Wiernik escaped Treblinka during the revolt of the prisoners on 'a sizzling hot day' of August 2 1943. A shot fired into the air signaled that the revolt was on. Wiernik wrote that he 'grabbed some guns' and after spotting an opportunity to make a break for the woods an axe. A camp guard in pursuit shot Wiernik with a pistol but the bullet did not penetrate his skin. Wiernik said he turned around and killed his pursuer with the axe. Wiernik continued to Warsaw hiding in a freight train.<br> Wiernik assumed the name of Jan Smarzynski. He made contact with members of the Jewish underground working in the 'Aryan' part of Warsaw. They realized he was a valuable eyewitness of the extermination process in Treblinka. He was persuaded in late 1943 to write A Year in Treblinka in spite of his initial reluctance Wiernik had little education and was not a skilled writer.<br> He took part in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising fighting in the Armia Ludowa. After the end of World War II Wiernik initially remained in Poland in 1947 he testified in the trial of Ludwig Fischer. He emigrated to Sweden and afterwards to the newly founded state of Israel.<br> There in the 1950s Wiernik built a model of the Treblinka camp. It is displayed in the Ghetto Fighters' House museum in Israel. In 1961 Wiernik testified in the Eichmann trial in Israel.<br> Jankiel Wiernik published Rok w Treblince A Year in Treblinka in 1944 as a clandestine booklet. It was printed through the efforts of the Jewish National Committee Zydowski Komitet Narodowy ZKN Bund underground organizations of the remnants of Polish Jews and the Polish Council to Aid Jews Zegota by means of an underground printer organized by Ferdynand Arczynski. The circulation was estimated by Wladyslaw Bartoszewski as 2000 copies. It was sent through Polish underground channels to London and translated into English and Yiddish. It was also printed in the US by American representatives of the General Jewish Workers Union of Poland ie. this copy. From Ian Dickson's 'Collector's Series'; a range of handmade box sets each title containing seven hand-printed images in signed mounts; offered in Standard Digital or De Luxe best edition. 'Neat Damned Box' comprises six silver gelatine prints and one colour digital print of punk pioneers The Damned; the images contained within the box set are all original handprinted photographs made from negatives taken for 'Sounds' magazine in the late 1970s; this is the superior DeLuxe edition which uses fibre-based prints instead of resin-coated in hinged archival mounts instead of standard mounts. The DeLuxe is the only issue to be signed both on the mount and the reverse of print. This is copy no.5 of an unspecified edition number perhaps fewer than 20 examples the series now having been discontinued by the publisher due to production costs and time constraints. The mounted photographs are contained in archival quality polyester sleeves with a frame dimension of 11 x 14 inches. Housed in an illustrated clamshell box charmingly home-made by Dickson himself with a numbered certificate affixed to the underside of the lid. The highly individual cover art is by famed cartoonist/illustrator Ray Lowry and a short but entertaining biography of the photographer 'Hired Gun' also with Lowry-designed cover completes the attractive package. A fine copy. Ian Dickson has been photographing rock stars since 1972 and his work has appeared in Disc Record Mirror New Musical Express Sounds Vox Mojo Q Rolling Stone and elsewhere. His first exhibition was in London in 1992 and several successful European shows followed. In 1994 a selection of his work was shown at the MTV Awards in Berlin at the Brit Awards at Alexandra Palace and at the World Music Awards in Monte Carlo and Copenhagen. A feature on his portfolio was published in the March 1995 issue of Q magazine and in August that year he was recognised by the 'Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum' who included his famous Rod Stewart 'pyjama' portrait; this was followed by an Eric Clapton and a Muddy Waters portrait added in February 2000. "The Carey Act of 1894 led to the creation of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation which initiated many irrigation projects by authorizing the federal government to contract with the states for arid land reclamation. The State of Oregon authorized entrepreneurs to build and operate canal systems for profit. The right of agricultural users to the water were provisional until irrigation actually began producing crops as provided by the Carey Act. On June 30 1950 the State of Oregon decreed that the Carey Act had provided ample time for interested water users to have staked a water rights claim and ended the eligibility opt-in period to receive irrigation water." "The Deschutes Irrigation and Power Company Canal is significant as a component of the first large-scale irrigation project in Central Oregon. Built by the Deschutes Irrigation and Power Company the canal was one of two early irrigation facilities constructed to irrigate desert land for prospective settlers in the central Oregon region in the early twentieth century. This initial canal system was instrumental in the establishment of the city of Bend Oregon and its surrounding communities. Because of the size of the Deschutes Irrigation and Power Company Canal project and the necessity of constructing it in an area of solid basalt subsurface conditions the surveying construction and operation of the company were substantial engineering feats for the period." Lots offered from 40 to 160 acres with perpetual water rights for the land. "Under this contract the company agrees with the settler to bring the water in ditches to the land of each purchaser and the company is to keep up all repairs on the ditches etc. being allowed to collect $1 per acre per annum for the irrigable acres as a maintenance fee from the holder of land." Collected archives of 40 vintage photographs of notorious vaudeville performers Rosie and Jenny Dolly known professionally as The Dolly Sisters taken throughout the 1910s and 1920s. Consisting of ten small archives of photographs assiduously assembled over a period of time with multiple photographers' stamps and signatures on the versos and rectos respectively. <br /> <br /> The collection represents a veritable who's who of portrait photographers of the early twentieth century including Walery Ruben Sobol Apeda Studio The Campbell Studio Frank Foulsham and A.C. Banfield Ira D. Schwarz and James Abbe. Many have been SIGNED directly by the photographers in manuscript pencil on the rectos in addition to the photographer's stamp on the verso. Five photographs note the name of Paris Plaisirs an early French music and dance magazine on the bottom right corners of the rectos. <br /> <br /> Especially notable in the collection is a photograph credited to Walery that has been INSCRIBED by the sisters on the bottom right corner of the recto: "To Charlotte with good wishes / Dolly Sisters."<br /> <br /> The collection spans the 1910s and 1920s the height of the sisters' popularity with photographs of the pair in the studio onstage and at home although the balance show the sisters performing sporting a variety of outlandish bedazzled costumes. One striking photograph taken to promote the 1916 play "His Bridal Night" shows the sisters with long dark hair about four years before they got the bobbed haircuts for which they became known. The collection also includes several photographs of the sisters at home together evidently taken around the holidays sitting in front of the Christmas tree applying makeup at a large vanity mirror and relaxing with their pets. <br /> <br /> Born in Hungary in 1892 twin sisters Jancsi and Roszika Deutsche moved to America with their family in the early 1900s. Urged on by their mother a former dancer the twins began their performing careers in Boston in 1906 at the age of 13 a performance that purportedly earned them the sobriquet "The Dollies" for their delicate features and perfectly matched proportions. The nickname stuck and the pair would rise through the vaudeville and Broadway ranks as teenagers eventually Americanizing their names to Jenny and Rosie. By 1911 the twins were star attractions in the Ziegfeld Follies aided more by their vampish good looks lively personalities and glamorous personas than any uncommon theatrical talent. <br /> <br /> The sisters would go on to make a fortune touring famed European dance halls and appeared in a few early silent films but quickly realized that engaging the interests of wealthy lovestruck benefactors was a far easier and more rewarding way to earn a living. Rosie and Jenny kept an awe-inspiring string of wealthy patrons in their back pockets including Daily Express owner Max Beaverbrook Diamond Jim Brady William Randolph Hearst and The Prince of Wales. In 1922 the sisters signed a six-week contract to appear at the Hotel Royal in Deauville where their nightly scores at the casino tallied in the millions launching an insatiable appetite for gambling. Here they are seen posing with their instruments and lyric sheets.</p> <p>Offering “vivacious entertainment†was this trio’s objective and this promotional piece or circular issued by their management company The Eastern-Empire Lyceum Bureau goes through great lengths to present the women’s musical background and training.</p> <p>Banjoist Hazel Grace Browne a graduate of Shaftesbury School of Expression of Baltimore could “sing the rare old Southern melodies…as only a child of the South can interpret them.†Adele Hoes learned her mandolin from Leland H. Powers; her voice training with Madame Cassavaunt and in the Grand Opera School in New York.
