‎"(DANIEL, GABRIEL). - AN IMAGINARY TRAVEL IN THE CARTESIAN WORLD.‎

‎Iter per Mundum Cartesii (and) Novae Difficultates a Peripatetico Propositae Auctori Iteneris per Mundum Cartesii Circa cognitionem Brutorum. Cum Refutatione duplicis defensionis Systematis Mundi Cartesii. (2 vols).‎

‎Amsterdam, Abraham Wolfgang, 1694. Uncut in contemp. blank boards. Title handwritten on spine. Spine a little rubbed. (22),307 pp. and (8),159 pp. Textillustrations in woodcut illustrating Cartesian physics and world system. A large copy, few marginal brownspots. Previous owners name on fly-leaf, Vilhelm Maar, Danish historian of medicine.‎

‎First Latin edition (The French original from 1690 Voyage du Monde de Descartes) of this imaginary travel to find Descartes on the moon and in the upper spheres. The work is one of the most importent anti-Cartesian polemics of the 1690's and it attacs the whole of Descartes system in a satirical way.""It aimes principally at the sharp Cartesian distinction between body and soul, related in a satirical fashion the voyage of the disembodied souls of the narrator, of Mersanne, and of another old friend of Descartes in the upper spheres. On their way to visit Descartes in the third heaven, they meet the souls of Aristotle and the disciples of descartes (clearly refelcting here the philosophical opinions of Gabriel Daniel himself). One of the articles of that treaty stipulates that the Cartesians will refer to Aristotle with more respect, whereas the Aristotelians will refrain from calling Descartes ""Enthusiast"", ""Madman"", ""Heretick"" or ""Atheist"" - all of these evidently labels commonly used by the opponents of Descartes at that time."" (Michael Heyd in ""Be Sober and Reasonable""). The work was published anonymous and earlier sometimes attributed to Daniel Defoe. -‎

‎Hannover, Carl Meyer, 1865. 4to. Contemp. modest hcloth. 2 orig. photographs mounted as frontispiece (Gauss-medal). 279,72,(2) pp. 3 plates, 6 tables. Internally clean.‎

‎First German edition of this milestone in mathematical statistics, first published in Latin as ""Theoria motus corporum coelestium in sectinibus conicis solem ambientum. 1809."" - In this work Gauss revealed for the first time his method of least squares. On January 1, 1801, the Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi discovered the planetoid Ceres, but could only observe it for few days before it was lost in the glare of the Sun until the end of the year. After so many months of not being observed it was not possible to calculate with existing methods at which position it should reappear. However Gauss, at an age of 24, astounded when he in December predicted the exact location at which Ceres again could be observed. Gauss did not reveal how he had calculated the orbit of Ceres. First in 1809 Gauss published his second book ""Theoria motus corporum coelestium in sectionibus conicis solem ambientium"" (the offered item) in which he revealed his new method of orbit calculation. In the first part he dealt with differential equations, conic sections and elliptic orbits, while in the second part, the main part of the work, he showed how to estimate and then to refine the estimation of a planet's orbit using a new method involving minimizing the sum of squared residuals, e.g., the method of least squares. He was able to prove the correctness of the method under the assumption of normally distributed errors. It is here that the Gaussian curve, expressing statistical distribution in probablility, makes its appearance. This work, along with the 'Discuisitiones', was the fruit of the triumphal decade in Gauss' life and established his reputation as a mathematical and scientific genius of the first order. Its earliest and one of its most significant developments was Einstein's application of the theory to what is known as the 'photo-electrical effect'....Einstein explained this effext by suggesting that the classical view that light is emitted in the form of continous waves must be abandoned. The photo-electrical effect could be explained only as an example of quantum action where the waves of light or X-rays are emitted in minute particles or bullets. It is he size of the bullet (the wave-lenght of the radiation) which determines the number of electrons ejected. It was for this, and not for the theory of relativity, that Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1921. Einstein's two fundamental papers on this subject are ""Ueber einem Erzeugung...."" 1905 and Zur Theorie der Lichterzeugung (the paper offered here)"" (PMM the note to 391). ‎"FLEMING, (JOHN AMBROSE). - THE ""FLEMING-VALVE""‎

‎""On the Conversion of Electric Oscillations into Continous Currents by means of a Vacuum Valve."" (And by the same author:) ""An Instrument for the Measurement of the Lenght of Long Electric Waves, and also Small Inductances and Capacities."" - [INTRODUCING THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF MODERN WIRELESS VALVE (PMM 396)]‎

‎London, Harrison and Sons, 1905. Bound in recent marbled boards. Both papers extracted from ""Proceedings of the Royal Society of London"", vol. 74, With title-page to volume 74. Pp. 476-487 and pp. 488-498.‎

‎First printing of these two seminal articles, in which the basic principle of the modern wireless valve, also called the ""Fleming Valve"", is introduced for the first time, making radio-telephony and broadcasting possible. ""The immense superiority of the Fleming thermionic valve to all previous detectors of wireless waves caused it to be widely used as an efficient and reliable detector."" (PMM). When Lee DeForest perfected the ""grid"" in 1907, Fleming's wireless signals could be amplified to the degree necessary to make radio-telephony and broadcasting possible. The Edison effect was first described in a paper by William Henry Preece, who was shown an experiment by Edison ""On a peculier of Glow-Lamps when raised to high Incasdence"", 1885. This effect was known as the ""Edison effect"", and in 1890 Fleming, an electrical engineer who had worked with Edison Company in London and was now professor at University College, began a careful study of this phenomenon in carbon filament lamps. In 1904 he was able to demonstrate that this occurred not only with electric waves but also with wireless waves. He thus introduced the basic principle of the modern wireless valve, which permits only unilateral conductivity. (see PMM No. 396).Shiers, Early Television. A Bibliographical Guide to 1940, no. 323 (for the first article here present)"" the article has been reprinted in George Shiers, ed. !The Telephone: An Historical Anthology"", 1977. ‎Very rare first edition of this work on the freedom and immortality of the soul, by the father of the famous physicist and anatomist, Jean Riolan the Younger. Jean Riolan the Elder (1539-1605) was also himself a noted French anatomist and a leading member of the medical faculty of Paris. He fought against the novelties that entered the faculty due to Paracelsus and authored a number of works attacking the most famous of the scientists who were in favour of chemical means. Works by him are of great scarcity. The work, which is divided into three parts attacks the theories on the soul of Pomponazzi, Portius, Sepulveda, and Cardano, and as such it is an important document in the seminal controversy about the immortality odf the soul which dominated most philosohical thought of the Renaissance. We have been unable to find the work in any bibliographies.‎

‎London, 1914. No wrappers, but stiched. All three papers contained in: ""Philosophical Magazine"", Sixth Series, Vol. 27. No. 159. March 1914. ‎First edition and first printing of all three papers. Rutherford, in this paper for the first time identifies the hydrogen nucleus, and called it the 'positive electron'. He later called it 'the proton' . In his definitive paper of 1911 he estimated the radius of the nucleus, a hundred thousand times smaller than that of an atom. Darwin in his paper (offered here) gave a more precise measure. In the first lines of the paper Rutherford outlines the content ""The present paper and and the accompanying paper by Mr. C. Darwin (the second paper offered here) deal with certain points in connection with the ""nucleus"" theory of the atom which were purposely omitted in my first communication on that subject (Phil. Mag. May 1911). A brief account is given of the later investigations which have been made to test the theory and of the deductions which can be drawn from them. At the same time a brief statement is given of recent observations on the passage of alpha particles through hydrogen, which throw importent light on the dimensions of the nucleus."" - Rutherford had studies alpha-particles intensely in the years before 1914 and proved quite conclusively that the individual particle was a helium atom with its electrons removed. The alpha particles were like the positive rays that had been discovered by Goldstein (1886), and now in 1914 (the paper offered) Rutherford suggested that the simplest positive rays must be those obtained from the hydrogen and that these must be the fundamentall positively-charged particle. He names it a 'positive electron'.Darwin, in the paper offered ""concluded from the known data:""No force proportional to some power of the distance other than the inverse square can give the dependence (the Rutherford scattering cross section) on (the initial velocity)"", and he then calculated the distance of closest alpha-particle-nucleus approach. The paper by Niels Bohr relates to ""The Stark effect"". In 1913 appeared ""an importent new discovery: when atomic hydrogen is exposed to a static electrical field its spectral lines split, the amount of splitting being proportional to thefield strenght (the linear Stark effect). After Rutherford read this news in ""Nature"", he at once wrote to Bohr:'I think it is rather up to you at the present time to write something on....electric effects.'"" (A. Pais). Bohrs paper on The Stark effect appeared in 1914, the paper offered here. - Rosenfeld. Niels Bohr' publications No. 10).‎
