KÂTIB ÇELEBI, HACI HALIFE MUSTAFA BIN ABDULLAH. [Hajji Khalifa, Kalfa] (1609-1657).
Kitab-i cihannûma li-Kâtib Çelebi. Vol. 1: Reprint. Vol. 2: Transcription. 2 volumes set. Editor-in-chief: Nevzat Bayhan.
New English In original Ottoman style full leather bounds. Folio. 2 volumes set: iii, [27], 698 p. reprint in Ottoman language, 40 color plts.; 700 p. transcription in Modern Turkish. Reprinted from 1732, Ibrahim Muteferrika Edition. (See Ozege for it's original: 3048.). A very heavy set. Ibrahim Muteferrika printed Katib Celebi's well-known book on geography and cosmography 'Cihannuma' in 1732 by adding a supplement containing new information on astronomy and Ottoman geography and maps, in which he relied mostly on Ebu Bekir b. Behram el-Dimaski's (d. 1691) work on the Cihannuma. The appendix in which Muteferrika explained the 'old' and the 'new' world systems produced by Tycho Brahe, Copernicus and Descartes as well as Galileo's theories of the moving bodies was extracted from Edmond Pourchot's (1651 - 1734) well-known work 'Institutiones philosophicae'. Pourchot himself was a reknowned philosopher and was elected rector of the University of Paris seven times. The text compiled by Muteferrika on the heliocentric system would represent comprehensive Turkish text on this subject for a century. Katip Celebi's book of Cihannuma (Jihannuma. View of the World) is a geographical work that makes the first use, in Turkey, of European atlases and other sources.

REHA GÜNAY.
Geleneksel Safranbolu evleri ve olusumu.
Very Good English Paperback. Pbo. Small 4to. In Turkish. 194, [72] p. B/w and color ills. Traditional Turkish houses in Safranbolu and its architecture. Safranbolu is a town and district of Karabük Province in the Black Sea region of Turkey. It is about two hundred kilometers north of Ankara and about a hundred kilometers south of the Black Sea coast, or more precisely about 9 kilometers north of the city of Karabük. Former Turkish names of the town were Zalifre and Tarakliborlu and in Greek Saframpolis, ??????????? It was part of Kastamonu Province until 1923 and Zonguldak Province between 1923 and 1995. According to the 2000 census, the population of the district is 47,257, of which 31,697 live in the town of Safranbolu. The district covers an area of 1,000 km2 (386 sq mi), and the town lies at an elevation of 485 m (1,591 ft). The Old Town preserves many old buildings, with 1008 registered historical artifacts. These are: 1 private museum, 25 mosques, 5 tombs, 8 historical fountains, 5 Turkish baths, 3 caravanserais, 1 historical clock tower, 1 sundial and hundreds of houses and mansions. Also there are mounds of ancient settlements, rock tombs and historical bridges. The Old Town is situated in a deep ravine in a fairly dry area in the rain shadow of the mountains. The New Town can be found on the plateau about two kilometers west of the Old Town. The name of the town derives from 'saffron' and the Greek word 'polis' (city), since Safranbolu was a trading place and a center for growing saffron.Today saffron is still alive at the village of Davutobasi which is 22 km east of Safranbolu and probably one of the best quality saffron in the world. Safranbolu was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1994 due to its well-preserved Ottoman era houses and architecture.

PIETRO DELLA VALLE.
Un viaggiatore Italiano nelle terre Ottomane: Pietro Della Valle un quandernetto di studi.= Osmanli topraklarinda bir Italyan gezgin Pietro Della Valle'nin çalisma defteri. Prep by: Mustafa Çiçekler, Nevin Özkan, Raniero Speelman.
New English Original bdg. HC. In Italian, Arabic, and Turkish. 271 p. Color and b/w ills. Pietro Della Valle was born in Rome on 2 April 1586, to a wealthy and noble family. His early life was spent in the pursuit of literature and arms. He was a cultivated man, who knew Latin, Greek, classical mythology, and the Bible. He also became a member of the Roman academy of the Umoristi, and acquired some reputation as a versifier and rhetorician. When Pietro was disappointed in love and began to consider suicide, Mario Schipano, a professor of medicine in Naples, suggested the idea of traveling in the East. It was Schipano who received a sort of diary in letters from Pietro's travels. Before leaving Naples, Pietro took a vow to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He left Venice by boat on the 8th of June 1614 and reached Constantinople; he remained there for more than a year and acquired a good knowledge of Turkish and a little Arabic. On the 25th of September, 1615, he went to Alexandria. Because he was a nobleman of distinction, he traveled with a suite of nine persons, and with every advantage due to his rank. From Alexandria he went on to Cairo, and, after an excursion to Mount Sinai, left Cairo for the Holy Land. He arrived there on the 8th of March, 1616, in time to take part in the Easter celebrations at Jerusalem. After visiting the holy sites, Pietro traveled from Damascus to Aleppo. After seeing a portrait of the beautiful Nestorian Christian Sitti Maani Gioerida (of mixed Syrian and Armenian descent), he went to Baghdad and married her a month later. While in the Middle East, he made one of the first modern records of the location of ancient Babylon and provided "remarkable descriptions" of the site. He also brought back to Europe inscribed bricks from Nineveh and Ur, some of the first examples of Cuneiform available to modern Europeans. At that time Baghdad was at war with Turkey, so he had to leave Baghdad on the 4th of January, 1617. Accompanied by his wife Maani, he proceeded by Hamadan to Isfahan. Afterward, he visited Persia. (The first documented ancestors of the Persian cat were imported from Persia into Italy in 1626 by Pietro Della Valle.) In the summer of 1618, he joined Shah Abbas in a campaign in northern Persia. Here he was well received at court and treated as the shah's guest. On his return to Isfahan he began to think of going back home through India, rather than endanger himself again in Turkey. However, the state of his health and the war between Persia and the Portuguese at Ormuz generated problems. In October 1621 he left Isfahan, visited Persepolis and Shiraz and made his way to the coast. But it was not until January 1623 that he found a passage for Surat on the English ship Whale, Captain Nicolas Woodcock. He sojourned in India until November 1624, his headquarters being Surat and Goa. In India Pietro Della Valle was introduced to the King Vekatappa Nayaka of Keladi, South India by Vithal Shenoy, the chief administrator of those territories. The accounts of his travels are one of the most important sources of history for the region. He was at Muscat in January 1625, and at Basra in March. In May he started by the desert route to Aleppo, and boarded on a French ship at Alexandretta. He reached Cyprus and finally Rome on the 28th of March 1626. There, he was received with many honors, not only in literary circles, but also from Pope Urban VIII, who appointed him a gentleman of his bedchamber. The rest of his life was uneventful; he married his second wife, Mariuccia (Tinatin de Ziba), a Georgian orphan of a noble family. She had been adopted by his first wife as a child, had traveled with him, and was the mother of fourteen children. He died in Rome on the 21st of April 1652, and is buried at his family's burial vault at Santa Maria in Aracoeli. By 1665 the portion of his "Travels" dealing with India and with his return had been translated into English. They contain accounts of his discussions with

Avrupa edebiyati, tarihi ve kültüründe Hürrem Sultan. [= Roxolana in European literature, history and culture]. Translated by Ferit Burak Aydar et alli.
New Turkish Paperback. Pbo. Mint. In Turkish. Ills. 427 p. Demy 8vo. Turkish Edition of 'Roxolana in European literature, history and culture'. This study is the first book-length scholarly study of the pervasiveness and significance of Roxolana in the European imagination. Roxolana, or 'Hurrem Sultan', was a sixteenth-century Ukrainian woman who made an unprecedented career from harem slave and concubine to legal wife and advisor of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-1566). Her influence on Ottoman affairs generated legends in many a European country. The essays gathered here represent an interdisciplinary survey of her legacy; the contributors view Roxolana as a transnational figure that reflected the shifting European attitudes towards 'the Other', and they investigate her image in a wide variety of sources, ranging from early modern historical chronicles, dramas and travel writings, to twentieth-century historical novels and plays. Also included are six European source texts featuring Roxolana, here translated into modern English for the first time. Importantly, this collection examines Roxolana from both Western and Eastern European perspectives; source material is taken from England, Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Turkey, Poland, and Ukraine. The volume is an important contribution to the study of early modern transnationalism, cross-cultural exchange.

Raki: The spirit of Turkey.
New English Original bdg. In English. 208 p. Color and b/w ills. Raki is the traditional drink of this country, and as such, reflects the fundamental aspects of its personality. Though it's as clear as water, it turns white when water is added, and with a little ice, it envelops you in the heady scent of anise. What better evidence that nothing in this country is as it appears? And in the bottle raki may appear rather innocuous but once you drink it.!

Die Karaz. Keramik von Tepecik in Ostanatolien.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (27,5 x 19,5 cm). In German. 502 p. B/w ills.

SABINA LANDSTATTER.
Ephesos yamaç ev 2. Arkeolojik bir rehber.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21,5 x 12 cm). In Turkish. Color ills. Sabine Ladstatter

MUHAMMED E. KUTLUOGLU.
The Egyptian question, 1831-1841. The expansionist policy of Mehmed Ali Pasa in Syria and Asia Minor and the reaction of the Sublime Porte. Edit: Halil Inalcik, Kemal Beydilli, Nejat Göyünç.
As New English Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. 272 p., 16 plates. Mint. The present study seeks to explore the Egyptian question, between 1831 and 1841, and to focus upon the struggle between Muhammad Ali Pasha and the Sultan. To this extent, it approaches the Egyptian question as an internal Ottoman problem, rather than as an international issue. The choice of opening and closing dates seems obvious enough. Despite a steadily deteriorating relationship after he battle of Navarino in October 1827, it was not until 1831 that open hostilities broke out between Muhammad Ali Pasha and the Sublime Porte. Though these hostilities anded in a settlement in 1833, the underlying struggle between Istanbul and Cario went on until 1841, when it was ended by the European Powers interference. The presents study focuses primarily upon Anatolia and Syria. Altough Muhammad Ali Pasha expanded his sphere of influence towards the Persian Gulf and the Arabian peninsula, it was above all Syria and Anatolia which served as the theater for his struggle with the Sublime Power.

AYAN GÜLGÖNEN.
Konya Cappadocia carpets, from the 17th to 19th centuries. In the TIEM and Gülgönen collections. Color analysis and text by Harald Bohmer, Recep Karadag. Technical analysis: Niels Ruter. Translation: Robert Bragner.
New New English Original bdg. with original dust wrapper. DJ. Mint. 115, [1] p., 61 color ills. In English. Anatolian carpets may be divided into three broad categories -Western, Central and Eastern- on the basis of their distinguishing regional features. The examples presented in this catalog are members of a collection of pieces that share common elements of design, pattern, color, and texture and that were woven, most probably between 17th and 19th centuries, in the region bounded by Konia, Karaman and Nevsehir in Central Anatolia. Each one being a unique and original work of art, most of them having never been published before, all treated with modern concepts of conservation at textile museum and forming the most comprehensive group specific to this type and region, the collection appear as a unitary and coherent group. The main characteristics of these Konya - Cappadocia carpets which are closest to the kilims among Anatolian carpets in construction, purpose and shape, manifest itself in color and unique geometrical and traditional motives.
