Kuo, Paul
A Day in Taiwan
Green gilt-stamped original cloth very good, [105]p., each page illustrated in b.w. with his drawings. Sketches on the life and work of a large segment of Taiwan's burgeoning population, showing life before the power tiller, the taxicab, factories etc., it is this timelessness that emerges from Kuo's characters to delight the reader unfamiliar with Chinese culture & to excite fond reminiscences from those who have been exposed to it. From pre-dawn, through the travels of the sun across the sky, until after the sun sets, Kuo describes and depicts his Taiwan. Kuo gained notoriety with his Formosan Vignette series in the China Post.

Reflections on Multiple Modernities: European, Chinese and Other Interpretations
This work explores an emerging paradigm in the social sciences, which assumes culturally specific forms of modernity. Modernization is thus no longer equated with homogenization. Scholars from history, sociology, area studies, and economics discuss the concept's implications. The first part covers a range of theoretical questions arising from the new approach. Issues such as the common features of all modernities and their interrelation with regional particularities, the reasons for antinomies of modernity, and the preconditions for a peaceful coexistence of cultures are raised. The second and third parts deal with Europe and China as two specific encounters with modernity, the tensions between universalism and cultural identities, both in past and present. The fourth part analyzes how Multiple Modernities translates into formal and informal institutions of diverse capitalisms.

Settlement and Social Change in Asia. Collected Papers Volume One
Red cloth, no jacket. Very Good. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xiv, 492 p., [16] leaves of plates :.ill., maps, ports. "In this first volume of essays I deal with several problems of settlement and social changes in Asia. They are the result of long years of research in China, Japan, Korea, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Turkey. In the opening portions I discuss land tenure and the definition of the basic concepts of 'land' and 'tenure'. Though land tenure may be treated in quite different ways, I am mainly concerned with the question of how human societies in Asia occupied and used the land. This involves a study of migrations and the structure of the new immigrant societies. . ." Scarce.

Hackmack, Adolf
Chinese Carpets and Rugs
N. Y.: Dover, 1973. as new reprint. The original edition of this book was published in 1924. The book attempts to explain and display (over 76 pages + index) the decorative themes that are used in Chinese carpets so that the buyer can distinguish them from those of India, Persia or Turkey. Both wool and silk rugs are discussed. LEARN about the Lotus-flowers design, the Pearl border, chrysanthemums, rosettes and various animals as they appear on carpets of the period. One fascinating idea that I picked up was the `endless luck' pattern (Wan-tzu-pu-tao-fou). Cond: Blue, yellow and purple paper wrapper, while ALL internal illus. is b/w.
