QING CHINA.
Manuscript recording a voyage to China and impressions of its major cities.
At sea & China: 1842-48. This ground is under English control though their authority is might makes right An American second mate's eyewitness account embellished with his illustrations of China in the wake of the First Opium War. Venturing east on a Jardine Matheson specie and opium runner he becomes an old China hand and an astute observer writing of early colonial Hong Kong and Shanghai trade arrangements and the sights and sounds of the coast. The first half consisting of diary entries written during the voyage from the United States describes how he became an adventurer almost by accident. "On the 1st of Sept. 1842 being in Boston and out of employ having spent all my money and bored my friends until they were tired of me I shipped in the Schr Gazell" p. 1. The Gazelle a watercolour of which opens the manuscript was an 115-ton Aberdeen-built schooner bought by Jardine Matheson from the opium merchant Robert Bennet Forbes. On 19 September 1842 it is loaded with guns two six-pounders and a nine-pounder muskets and its cargo of nine boxes of specie putting to sea with a company of nine. The Gazelle's path is recorded through 30 pages of detailed entries many giving latitudes and longitudes. He writes of variable weather entailing risk of drowning fish and barracuda dolphins and the ship's resident dog which derives much amusement from catching fish flopping onto the deck. Crossing the Equator brings back memories of his line-crossing ceremony when he received on King Neptune's orders "a confounded shaving - tar and grease for lather and an iron tool for a razor. I was deluged with about 20 buckets of water" pp. 15-17. Rounding the cape he cannot help "thinking what an eggshell I had ventured to double the cape in an American Pilot boat" p. 22. Their impending arrival in China is signalled by encounters with the American merchant vessel Morrison - operating between New York and Canton - and the Gazelle reaches Macao on 22 February 1843. The remainder of the manuscript records his impressions of China. These take the form of recollections written in the late 1840s - this retrospection is measured and evidently the product of considered thought rather than impulse. Macao their first port of call "is the most healthy place in China and much the pleasantest" p.31 but in the wake of the First Opium War it has been replaced by Hong Kong as the centre of the China trade. Following their arrival the Gazelle is reassigned from transporting specie to running opium among Macao Hong Kong and China's coastal cities affording the writer a hefty pay rise and opportunities to explore new parts of the country in the coming years. His memories of Hong Kong as it was in 1844 are vivid. He remembers the gunshot in the late evening that signalled the beginning of a curfew for all Chinese residents and recalls the anchorage at Whampoa the home to a fleet of 12 European opium vessels each manned with 100 men and presenting "a most formidable appearance" p. 34. Accompanying this description are pencil drawings of the different boats found on the bustling Pearl River. Hong Kong's local inhabitants do not make a positive impression. "The Chinese are the most adept thieves I ever saw. As I once heard a sailor say they would steal your teeth and come next day for your gums. They even come on board of ships at the risk of being shot and steal things off the deck" p. 36. Ships at anchor are inundated with washerwomen vendors and tailors the long braided queues of the men causing much confusion to the European eye. A particularly memorable character is "Boston Jack" the Chinese man who arranges everything that American ships might need while in port. "He made one voyage to Boston about 45 years ago and on his return became a comprador having got a smattering of English and by dealing honestly has amassed a large fortune. He is a fine old man about 73 or 4 and speaks very good English. He keeps only 6 wives" p. 38. Space is also devoted in the manuscript to the fine beef and the abundance of tropical fruits and vegetables that the region has to offer. His work for Jardine Matheson takes him to many of the most important cities in China. Time in Canton offers the chance to see the contrast between the hong quarter and the squalor of the rest of the city. Near the Bogue of Tigris nine large forts equipped with 1000 guns built in the wake of the war face incoming vessels. Concerning Amoy he records and sketches in pencil the distinctive appearance of its junks while Chusan stands out for its industrious citizenry food and many statues and idols including several that he believes mirror Biblical scenes. Shanghai with its newly established foreign concessionary areas is now a centre of opium trading receiving 1400 chests per month although foreign ships are confined to Suzhou Creek and cannot yet enter the port. He sketches one of the 3000 junks in the city's waters at any one time as well as a rough map and notes that the city's inhabitants are much preferred over their Canton compatriots for their "civil and obliging" manner p. 48. "All the merchants live on the English ground it being more convenient to trade. There are from 40 to 50 European residences here and a very large trade which is gradually insuring sic a great deal of opium is bartered here for tea & silks" p. 49. The right to trade is backed by force: "this ground is under English control though their authority is might makes right" ibid. The manuscript ends mid-sentence on its 50th page but not before the writer has described in detail the use of Spanish dollars in Shanghai and the materials used to build houses in the city. There is no indication of his subsequent pursuits or whether he lived to see the China he knew - a country on the cusp of colonial modernity - pass into history. Octavo notebook 252 x 165 mm. Opening full-page watercolour 12 illustrations and plan in pencil. Original blue linen pink patterned endpapers edges sprinkled blue 49 pages neatly written in black ink 38 unused blanks. Notebook worn and shaken with sewing loose a few closed tears internally touching a few letters only. A very good example. unknown

MAO'S CHINA.
Renmin dahui tang "The Great Hall of the People".
Beijing: Renmin meishu chubanshe c.1959. Monumentality and the weight of state power First edition first printing of this grand portfolio. Occupying 170000 square metres on the western flank of Tiananmen Square the Great Hall of the People was one of ten architectural projects completed in 1959 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. The design combines classical and neoclassical styles with Chinese aesthetics. For example the total number of columns in the main gate colonnade equals the number found inside the most important hall in the Forbidden City and these columns are spaced at receding widths away from the central point - a long-held Chinese architectural practice. The decision to build the hall was enacted by the Politburo in 1958 and a force of 30000 builders and technicians finished the project in just ten months. For the last six decades the Great Hall's main ceremonial space capable of holding 10000 people has served as the venue for Chinese Communist Party meetings and lavish state events. Its corridors and many smaller rooms have also played host to political intrigues contentious meetings and important diplomatic dialogues. In 2003 Riverdance became the first Western show to perform on the hall's main stage selling out 11 performances. Copies were also issued in a dark red vinyl box with no priority established. Landscape folio. Title leaf printed in red and black. 20 colour photographic plates c. 292 x 465 mm printed on glossy paper each tipped onto loose 372 x 525 stiff card sheet together with loose single title leaf printed both sides all housed in original red cloth box lid with calligraphic title in gilt and blind-stamped decoration. Plates bright a little soiling and foxing to card sheets; bright box lightly rubbed and soiled abrasions to base sides of tray a little tender: a fine set in well-preserved box. TRAVELS IN CHINA.
Album of 230 photographs recording the adventures of two Western tourists.
China: 1920. From palace to park lake to shining sea A collection of 230 vernacular photographs recording a couple's trip to Beijing Jinan and Qingdao a decade after the abdication of the last Qing emperor. Arranged chronologically the album combines landscape and architectural views with candid shots of the travellers and the people they met. The appearance of many easily identifiable landmarks more than compensates for a lack of captions. The travellers begin their holiday in Beijing recently the site of the May Fourth demonstrations. The first 35 images capture the serenity of the Summer Palace once an imperial retreat with images showing the East Palace Gate and the exterior Hall of Joyful Longevity. The visitors strike jaunty individual poses on a stone lion and ride regally on the back of a bronze deer statue. The lady is captured from a distance on a balcony overlooking the Kunming Lake the largest body of water in the palace complex with the famous 17-arch bridge visible in the background. Like many before them these travellers are drawn to such architectural wonders as the Glowing Clouds and Holy Land Archway as well as the full-size marble boat restored by the Empress Cixi in the 19th century using funds allocated for outfitting a real navy. Several vistas of the lake show its solitude and remoteness - qualities accentuated by the palace's transition in 1914 from a working royal residence into a publicly accessible monument to China's imperial past. Until 1924 the Forbidden City remained the private residence of the last emperor Pu Yi and this album thus contains only a few images taken in the accessible outer court. The travellers find more freedom however in nearby Beihai Park climbing up to the imposing White Pagoda and snapping several views of Beijing from on high. Also captured here are two soldiers on duty by one of the bridge archways as well as the classic view of the pagoda looming over the park's picturesque lake. China's rapidly growing network of railway lines afforded travellers conveniences unknown even a couple of decades before. The visitors record their journey on the Beijing-Zhangjiakou line the first stretch of railway built by the Chinese government rather than foreign investors alighting near Nankou. There the lady poses in a sedan chair and later with three young children fascinated by a camera held by one of the couple's acquaintances. Visiting the Ming tombs affords many opportunities to photograph and be photographed with the famous stone animal sculptures while in one image the lady lies comfortably in a tree. Back on the train they travel to the Great Wall near Badaling and Qinglongqiao. A dozen pictures taken on the wall show the brickwork in a state of disrepair as was common with sections of the wall by this time and the travellers take refreshments on a level section with some local children for company. A well-earned rest on the return train refreshes them for a visit to the Jade Peak Pagoda on Jade Spring Hill today the site of residences for top political leaders with the camera capturing several nice landscape views of the pagoda and a temple desecrated inside. Following further excursions to the unmissable Temple of Heaven and the Cishou Pagoda they follow the steel rails to Jinan admiring the Yangtze River and waterfront industries in the company of local perhaps warlord troops. The holiday ends in the Japan-controlled coastal resort of Qingdao its station platform teeming with adult and child passengers and its seafront peppered with colonial architecture including the Grand Hotel. The final photographs commemorate time spent at the beach and climbing a nearby mountain most likely Laoshan - the relaxing denouement to a holiday of considerable excitement. Landscape folio 260 x 335 mm. Original brown pebble-grain leatherette tied with brown chord through punch holes front cover lettered in gilt within blind frame covers lined with black moiré-patterned cloth 52 black card leaves with 230 gelatin silver photographs each c. 75 x 130 mm mounted with silver photo corners first blank with pencilled title "China 1920". With 3 gelatin silver photographs 63 x 40 mm loosely inserted. 2 photographs no longer present. Photographs clear most with silver mirroring and a few with corners lifting image loose from its mount and another partially split vertically a few leaves beginning to split at gutter couple of expertly repaired tears: a very good example. hardcover

[LITERATURE - CHINA] GILES, Herbert
A History of Chinese Literature
New York: D. Appleton -Century Co 1935. Later printing. 8vo. 448pp. Dustjacket. Publisher's original yellow cloth titled and decorated in black to spine and front board a very good strong copy in a similarly very good copy of the dustwrapper with some superficial edgewear. Internally clean. With a striking and rather beautifully executed inscription in Mandarin Chinese to the front flyleaf:<br /> "To Hai Luo from Younghill Kang late 1935"<br /> <br /> Although the recipient of the inscription is unknown the characters may be a play on the nickname Leisure Man of Lakes and Seas of the Ming Dynasty writer Luo Guanzhong a tremendously important figure in Chinese literature who is notably absent from Giles's book and intended as something in the manner of a private joke. Younghill Kang is best known as the early Asian American author of the celebrated "The Grass Roof" and its sequel "East Goes West; The Making of an Oriental Yankee." Originally of Korean descent he moved to the US in the 1930's and became amongst other things an avid chronicler of his own culture shock. 61931. D. Appleton -Century Co unknown
