London. 1745- 1747. Copperplate engraving image 7 1/2 x 6 inches 19 x 15 cm on sheet 10 1/2 x 7 inches fine condition. A view of a village in the north east of China on the route between Shandong province and Tientsin Tianjin after the work of Joan Nieuhof whose 17th century views were amongst the earliest reliable reports of China. Nieuhof was traveling as a member of a Portuguese embassy eager to establish trade relations with China. This engraving was published in an 18th century compendium of important travel writing: "A New General Collection of Voyages and Travels" published by Astley. . unknown

This is a "survival map" or "escape map" compiled for the U.S. Army Air Forces; these light-weight "silk" maps actually most were man-made fabrics were carried by military personnel with missions in enemy territory each map containing information crucial to facilitating escape to friendly territory. South China side has an inset of Taiwan Formosa. Winds and ocean currents are marked as well as much information on settlements and terrain. Appears to be a 1945 issue. Scale 1:2000000. Map No. 34 includes approximate coordinates: 112 to 122 degrees east and 22 to 32 degrees north showing the area from Hong Kong to Nan-ching Nanking. Map No. 35 includes approximate coordinates 109 to 123 degrees east and 30 to 38 degrees north. The map is in fine condition but detached from the wrappers. There is wear and edge chipping to the wrappers. An extraordinary piece of Japanese-inspired propaganda featuring a bright and colorful vintage map with rail lines and airlines marked. Text on the verso of the mailer reads in part: "Progressing Manchoukuo. With racial harmony and Wangtao rule as its great ideals the State of Manchoukuo was founded on March 1st 1932. The establishment of Manchoukuo was of ephochal significance not only in the history of the Orient but also of the world for it changed Manchuria known up till then as the "powder magazine of the Far East" into one of the cornerstones of Oriental peace freed the forgotten masses of the territory from the ruthless extortion and oppression of the warlord regime of the Changs and heralded the debut of a new and enlightened regime pledged to the noble tasks of building a land of peace promise and prosperity." This coastal chart shows the estuary of the Maxie River Chinese: Maxie He French: Rivière Ma-The wikipedia surrounding coastal areas and islands now part of Guangdong Province. The capital of the French territory Fort Bayard is shown on the map and in an inset map at upper right. There is also an inset map of Montao Anchorage. This is the September 1931 fourth edition of the map originally published in 1916 here with corrections to March 1944. One frame with glass the other without. The unglazed image has one abraded line at lower right and light wear but overall the paintings are in very good condition. The frames have wear and a few chips. The paper cover on the back of the frames has deteriorated with age revealing old nails. Very attractive images of Chinese junks. The magazine elucidates the challenges of the pre World War II era in both articles and graphics. There is a dramatic pictorial map of Spain dramatising the conflict there "Roman Holiday in the Spanish Bull Ring." In the photo-illustration section are two halfpage images of "Wang Ko-min Chinese chief of Japan's puppet regime in North China feted in Tokyo; and Vataru Kachi and his wife Japanese blistered their country's warlords." Two page article "Bow to the Sentry" lists the "Important Standards for Press Censorship" given in the exact English version transmitted to newspapers by the Japanese. A halfpage satirical cartoon "Plucking the Vaunted Japanese Falcon" and a photo-illustration accompanies the article. Short article by Ernest Hemingway "Treachery in Aragon." The cover illustration by Wesley Neff is titled "Check-Up on Hat Check Girls." Publication of the magazine lasted for just over two years ceasing in 1939; it was described by the editor Arnold Gingrich as "A magazine of unfamiliar fact and informed opinion filling in the shadows cast by coming events all over the world; equally opposed to the development of dictatorship from either Left or Right whose one fixed editorial aim is to give unhampered and unbiased demonstration of whatever dangers threaten this our democracy from without and within in accord with the Lincolnian dictum of 'Let the people know the truth and this country is safe.'" .
