1934. DESIGN Kamisaka SEKKA. UTA-E Kyoto & Tokyo: Unsodo Showa 9 1934. 1 volume 31 x 22 cm cloth ribbon bound covers paper label. 25 color full page images after designs by Sekka. As Sekka's last work it crowns his remarkable career with a lovely evocation of Koetsu's Saga-bon. The condition is a bit better than average with relatively little of the offsetting from the prints to the poems that is usual in this book. Slight foxing and slight edgewear. The printing is very good the colors lovely. It is a good copy overall but the back cover has an ownership note in Japanese upon it. Without the original publishers clasped case but otherwise complete. Priced accordingly. One volume:. unknown

[DESIGN] Tsuda SEIFU^ & Asano KOUKO
OCHIGAKI RAKUGAKI
1906. DESIGN Tsuda SEIFU & ASANO Kouko. OCHIGAKI RAKUGAKI. Kyoto Unsodo Meiji 39 1906. 1 vol. of two 24.6 X 17.8 cm. Orihon folding album of color woodblock printed designs. Tsuda Seifu in this early incarnation he lived to 98! was one of the foremost designers of the Neo-Rimpa renaissance. During his long artistic career he would contribute as a designer as here a Western-style painter in oil and watercolor a book designer and traditional "Nihonga" painter. Though very prolific his early design works done for Unkindo and Unsodo of Kyoto have rarely survived and thus are known primarily by rumor and by looking through old Unsodo catalogues from the period. Here is a partial copy of one of those albums "FALLEN PERSIMMONS" which he did in collaboration with fellow designer and friend Asano Kouko who would die young. There are 15 double page designs printed and overprinted in saturated color and metallic inks. The volume is in very clean shape though the back cover is missing its overlay. The prints themselves are extraordinary. A happy confluence of rarity and great beauty. unknown

BIJUTSUKAI 美術海
1903. DESIGN UNSODO èŠ¸è‰¸å ‚ Publisher. BIJUTSUKAI 美術海. Kyoto Unsodo 24.0 x 16.3 cm 61 numbers of the 70 numbers printed in the BIJUTSUKAI design series Numbers 1 thru 61 Originally issued in 70 volumes in the early 1900s. Number one was published on January 1st Meiji 36 1903 Number 61 in 1905. Over 1200 color woodblock printed designs. A remarkable achievement by most of the important designers of the day. Bijutsukai printing is always good the early printings here are extraordinary In very good condition though number one is a bit tired. Enclosed in an old clasped chitsu case. There is quite a bit of confusion about this series BIJUTSUKAI and the SHIN-BIJUTSUKAI series which followed it. They are two different sets of design. The BIJUTSUKAI was printed under the general rubric of Shinbijutsukai but they are two different works pubished with two different series titles and numbering. Early printings of the BIJUTSUKAI have become unusual such a long run of the individual issues unheard of. unknown

ONCHI Koushirou binding design..
NIHON JIDOU BUNKO 日本å…童文庫 JAPANESE CHILDREN'S LIBRARY 76 volumes complete
1927. ONCHI Koushirou æ©åœ°å四郎 binding design. NIHON JIDOU BUNKO 日本å…童文庫 JAPANESE CHILDREN'S LIBRARY 76 volumes complete.
Searching for a concise introduction to this set I found a wonderful little essay written by the owner of the UMINEKO book shop in Japan. He was remarking on the exhibition of art bindings that he had seen at an exhibition of art bindings from the 20s and 30s that was held at the Old Book Center æ±äº¬å¤æ›¸ä¼šé¤¨ã€€in Tokyo a few years ago.

This is a rather poor translation more a paraphrase really from his original Japanese. Just a nice introduction to the set and the era.

â€When I went to the recent exhibition I was quite taken with a variety of book named "Yenbon" It is a general term for the collection of literary works published by many publishers in the late 1920s early Showa era. They were called 'yen book' at that time because they were priced cheaply at 1 yen per volume.

So-called "Yen books" for children representatives of which are this "Nihon Jidobunko"Children's Library and "Shougakusei Zenshuu" Elementary School Children's Complete Works Published by Kobunsha Bungeishunjusha.

ARS and Koubunsha are known for their fierce competition in advertising and sales in that era.

"Nihon Jidoubunko" was a collection of 76 volumes published by ARS from 1927 Showa 2 to 1930 Showa 5.
Ars Publishing is a publishing company founded by the famous poet Kitahara Hyakushu's younger brother Tetsuo. They published wonderful works on art theory photographic manuals dictionaries of science. many designed by Onchi.

The sales policy of this "Japan Children's Library" was "Distributed only to reserved members not sold individually. Separate volume 'Self-Study Dictionary' will be given free of charge." In other words quite like the animal encyclopedia my parents bought me monthly at the supermarket back in the early 60s.

Illustrated by Takeo Takei Yumeji Takehisa Hatsuyamaji Kiichi Okamoto and many other of the finest children's illustrators of the time.
The authors and editors included Mimei Ogawa Hakushu Kitahara Shoyo Tsubouchi Miekichi Suzuki and Toson Shimazaki.

Onchi himself worked on the cover art and binding of all volumes and the cover art is different for each volume. All are very beautiful.
Onchi worked on everything from the layout of the illustrations to the creation of the block copy and the creation of the advertising pamphlet for the entire volume.

A revised edition was released after the war in 1953 Showa 28. Onchi was in charge of the binding for the revised version but the design and binding are the same for all volumes. Not varied for each volume as here.

Thus a remarkable set virtually impossible to find complete of a collection of contemporary children's stories by famous Japanese authors housed in a beautiful binding and book design. brother Tetsuo. The authors and editors included Mimei Ogawa Hakushu Kitahara Shoyo Tsubouchi Miekichi Suzuki and Toson Shimazaki. Onchi himself worked on the cover art and binding of all volumes and the cover art is different for each of the 76. All are very beautiful. 1908. DESIGN Sugiura HISUI designer. MITSUKOSHI; MITSUKOSHI TIMES; OSAKA MITSUKOSHI Tokyo & Osaka 1908-1923. Western-style magazines 24.9 x 18.4 cm decorated wrappers. Lovely covers most by Sugiura Hisui 1876-1965 or designed under his supervision. Hisui is the most important figure in the development of Japanese commercial art in the 20th century the progenitor of "Taisho Chic" and a force to be reckoned with as a practical designer at Mitsukoshi and an educator at the Japan School of Art the Imperial School of Fine Art and the Tama Imperial School of Art which he co-founded. He even spent two years in Europe in the early 20s researching design. He created many portfolios of design examples for professionals wrote treatises on the principles of design and was a tireless creator of posters and magazine covers. He began work at Mitsukoshi in 1908 as a design consultant in charge of cover art for the house organ MITSUKOSHI TIMES. When MITSUKOSHI magazine began in 1912 he had already been promoted to head of design for the company a year earlier and stayed in that position for decades. His artwork graced the covers of many magazines over the years but it was his work for MITSUKOSHI and MITSUKOSHI TIMES and OSAKA MITSUKOSHI that began his design career. We are offering here a group of issues of those magazines most with his brilliant cover art. The magazines as a form of trade catalog and guide to fashion for the well-heeled clientele of Mitsukoshi department store were intrinsically ephemeral. They are hefty magazines a vade mecum for the bon ton with pictures of summer frocks kimono fabrics morning coats shoes - with instructions on how they should be cleaned stored worn. With pictures and prices and order sheets. Useful and used then thrown away they are seldom found today. A gathering of this size is quite unusual especially as it begins with issues of MITSUKOSHI TIMES from 1908 - the year that Hisui took over design reponsibilities for the house organ. The issues: MITSUKOSHI TIMES 11 issues from 1908-13 Oct & Nov Meiji 41 1908; V.8 #s 4 & 6; V.10 #s 9 & 11; V.11 #s 4 7 11 & 14 V.12 #3. MITSUKOSHI 31 issues from 1912-1923 V.2 #4; V.4 #s 5 6 7 & 8; V.5 #s 4 5 7 & 8; V.6 #s 2 & 11; V.7 #s 6 7 & 8; V.8 #s 2 3 4 5 & 7; V.9 #s 4 5 6 7 9 & 12; V.10 #s 4 6 & 12; V.11 #11`; V.12 #3; V.13 #6.
