Spine slightly cocked bruising to spine ends spotting to top edge. Scuffed patch to ffep inscribed by Trevor in black pen below: "To Sheila/ with love from Meriol/ 1974." Else clean and tight. In Val Biro's wintery dust jacket: edgewear and creasing especially to spine ends. Still a pleasing copy of the second novel of six in Trevor's Luxembourg series unusual inscribed. Meriol Trevor 1919–2000 was a British novelist and biographer whose "Catholicism and understanding of history quietly underlaid all her work" Matthews 2000. Trevor's two-volume biography Newman won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1962. From 1973 and unmentioned in Matthews obituary Trevor successfully turned her hand to historical romance publishing two series the Warstowe Saga and the Luxembourg series the latter set mostly in Luxembourg during the Napoleonic wars. In Mozely's knowing & sharply observed dust jacket: chipping and wear to extremities joints rubbed. Still a nice copy of Sinclair's first novel whose theme is "the paradox of innocence" and "that only remembered experience counts". Sterrett whimsically played with every element of his feature and was blissfully free of self-conciousness or restraint. Like all truly great comedians he often recruits the reader and lets them in on the gag as it plays out while the actual characters are clueless. It's a deceptively complicated comedic gift. Other times its pure slapstick with the unvarnished roughness and outrageous takes that characterized the period but it's still out laugh loud funny and honestly when's the last time you really laughed at a comic strip Sterrett stretched the limits of comics with the freedom that accompanied an art form yet to deigned respectable and he produced one of the most personally stamped features in comic strip history. New York: Halsey McCormack & Heller 1929. Very good. Blueprint 24.5 x 31 inches. Design dated 1929 with 1930 company stamp on the reverse. Full scale schematic drawing for a combination desk lamp/writing set possibly designed for the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower in Brooklyn. With an original linen-backed photograph of the object 8.25 x 10.5 inches with binder punches in the gutter and writing on the back light soil and creasing. The blueprint has a 2-inch closed tear along one of the center creases otherwise Near Fine. Currently folded up the blueprint could easily be ironed out for display--or one could track down the original set and have a DIY Joseph Kosuth-style "One and Three Desk Sets" installation a suggestion made in jest but that would actually be pretty neat. <br /> <br />Halsey McCormack & Heller was an architecture firm founded in 1920 known for their landmark Art Deco and Beaux-Arts style bank buildings located around New York including the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower in Brooklyn 1927-1929 the Emigrant Savings Bank in the Bronx and the Dime Savings Bank in Brooklyn. <br /> <br/><br/> Halsey, McCormack & Heller unknown

We have been unable to ascertain whether the tapestries were ever realised from these designs.</p>

<p><em>4to printed bifolio sheet 24 x 19.5 cm some marks and folds. Addressed to Joseph Hume M.P and signed by Richard Burchet R.W. Herman and W.D. Telfer. </em></p><p>In 1845 Richard Burchett became the ringleader of students protesting to the Board of Trade about the teaching methods at the Government School of Design: this was the first attempt to improve the instruction in the principles and practice of ornamental design. The complaint became so serious that eventually a Parliamentary Committee of Enquiry was instituted in 1846 at which he and others gave evidence. Oddly by that time Burchett had already become a master at the school and so was giving evidence against his own employees to the committee.</p><p>This copy was addressed to the radical Joseph Hume M.P who was a close friend of William Williams another radical M.P. who led the charge of incompetence by the School of Design in the House of Commons. After eight committee meetings it was agreed that the School was not in good shape 'the principles of Ornaments and the practice of original design as applicable to manufactures are not efficiently taught' and 'That a knowledge of manufacturing processes so as to enable the students to unite fitness and practicability in Ornament is not communicated.' Reforms were instituted but not in time for some woefully bad designs to appear at the Great Exhibition of 1851 for all the world to see.</p> [London], 17 Bond Street, Commercial Road. 10th July

I personally believe it's the result of the choice of materials made by the publisher. I have listed this as simply "very good" due to the flaking; without this I would list it as "fine." Dust jacket is in fine condition with mylar cover. Hinges and binding are all tight and sound. Beautiful appearance on any bookshelf. A sound and attractive copy.
