The 1st edition of this play was published in 1910 a 2nd edition only one year later both covers of those editions being unspectacular. The cover design for preceded 3rd edition by Jiŕà Kroha 1893-1974 a Czech modernist architect and designer is all but this: probalby originally executed as ink drawing he sketched the face of the medevial Bohemian king Wenceslaus IV in constructivist manner clear structure and strong colour. - Cover with one small crease and minimally time-stained otherwise very well preserved copy of this particularly rare edition – Not in Primus and Vloemans. First edition of this important work about avant-garde music and theatre theory by Frantisek Emil Burian 1904-59 a multi-talented musician composer poet actor and theatre director dedicated to Dada Futurism and Czech Poetism whose agility later also helped him to survive the Holocaust. As member of the notorious Prague based „Devetsil“ avant-garde group in the 1920s and 1930s Burian was closely connected to artists like Vit Obrtel who designed the cover and executed the rich typographical work of „Polydynamika“ being his very first book design at all. With this item Obrtel already developes main elements of his constructivist cover art: complex orthogonal spaces and lines with reduced usage of colour incorporating the title typography. – Cover very slightly time stained and with minimal traces of use otherwise a very clean copy of this scarce item. Hannover: Paul Steegemann Verlag 1920. Gr. 8°. 49 3 Seiten. Halbpergamenteinband mit goldgeprägtem Rückentitel Pergamentecken und mehrfarbig marmorierten Überzugspapier. Nr. 246 von 800 handschriftlich nummerierten auf handgeschöpftem Bütten gedruckten Exemplaren wovon 50 in Ganzpergament die restlichen 750 wie vorliegendes in Halbpergament gebunden wurden. Die von Moreck betreute Ausgabe enthält "vier unveröffentlichte Gedichte aus dem Manuskript" "Prometheus" "Liebeskämpfe" "Die Hinrichtung" und "Sieche Madonna" die dieser zwar dem prototypischen poète maudit Verlaine zuschrieb aber eigentlich von ihm selbst stammen. Die 1890 unter dem Titel "Femmes" erschienene Erstausgabe konnte aufgrund des damals verfemten Inhalts lediglich als Privatdruck in einer Auflage von 500 Exemplaren erscheinen. Ähnlich verfuhr Steegemann der 1919 die deutsche Erstausgabe ebenfalls als Privatdruck für Subskriptienten auf den Markt brachte welche auch prompt beschlagnahmt was dem Verleger auch eine Geldstrafe von 500 Mark einbrachte. Trotzdem ließ er schon 1920 vorliegende zweite Auflage folgen. – Untere Pergamentecke des Vorderdeckels fehlt auf den Ss. 3 6 7 8 und 9 befindet sich ein Fleck mit ca. 1 cm Durchmesser. Original publisher's pictorial wrapper with flaps. 2nd edition of this novel originally published in English language under the title "The Hideout" in 1942 in the U.S. back cover shows the cover illustration of this edition where Hostovsky had to flee from the Nazis in 1940 due to his Jewish origins. Teige's stringent cover design combines geometric and typografic elements alike.
