Hommage à Werkman [Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman]
A posthumous homage to Dutch typographer and artist Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman, publisher of the magazine "The Next Call" and pioneer in the art of avant-garde printing. As a member of the Dutch resistance in World War II, Werkman operated an illegal printing press and was shot by the Gestapo in 1945. His colleagues and peers compiled this homage book more than a decade later to commemorate his work. The book contains both examples of Werkman's own art prints, as well as art and text from the many contributors - totaling around 100 distinct pieces of artwork from all involved, as well as multiple pieces of artistically-arranged texts about (or related to) Werkman. Contributors include F.R.A Henkels, W. Sandberg, Kurt Martin, HAP Grieshaber, H.L. Greve, Riccarda Gregor, Herbert Schwobel, Emil Kiess, Raoul Ubac, Wilhelm Geyer, Walter Renz, Werner Oberle, Fritz Ruoff, and the students of the Karlsruhe academy of arts. Filigrane à la crosse la Bâle dans monogramme utilisé au XVIe siècle de 1520 à 1606, Gaudriault, Filigranes (…) p119 N° 488. Avant la signature te l’inscription sur la dalle. Portrait médaillon représentant Michel-Ange, le visage tourné vers la gauche, mention « MICHAEL ANGELUS BONAROTUS PATRICIUS FLORENT AN ANGENS LXXIII »C’est surtout par la gravure, permettant d’avoir une vue d’ensemble du jugement dernier, que la fresque de Michel-Ange obtint une reconnaissance universelle. Ce qui explique la prolifération des copies tout au long du XVIe et XVIIe siècle de cette œuvre majeure. Bel exemplaire ne tirage du XVIe siècle avant la lettre et d’un très bel encrage.

Original white three-quarter faux vellum over gray boards with gilt ruling and spine lettering. Very Good with dampstaining to foot toning to head contents generally bright and in nicer shape. In a serviceable example of the rare original jacket chipped at head 2" and tail small closed tear to top of front panel rubbed along edges toning and dampstaining to spine. Oscar Wilde's classic Gothic horror tale with full-page wood engravings by Eugene Dété from drawings by Paul Thiriat each with a tissue guard titled in crimson. Charles Carrington unknown books

Inner hinges cracked. 8vo. Original full green cloth binding, decorated and lettered in gold and black. Binding very worn. Hardbound. The author, Isaac W. Wiley, was a pastor, medical and educational missionary, and influential bishop of the former Methodist Episcopal Church. Wiley College, founded in 1873 by the Freemen's Aid Society to educate newly freed slaves, was named for him. He served as a missionary for some years in China and returned to organize missionary activity in the Far East. This account of his travels makes interesting reading. He visited and describes many places, customs, sights, religions. In China: Shanghai; Peking; Kiukiang; Foochow; Hong Kong; Canton - in Japan: Yokohama; Nagasaki; Tokio (Tokyo); among other places.
