Hamilton served as British envoy to the court of Naples where he began collecting Greek vases and other antiquities immediately upon arriving at his post. In 1766–67 he published a volume of engravings of his collection entitled A Collection of Etruscan Greek and Roman antiquities from the cabinet of the Honble. Wm. Hamilton. A further three volumes were produced in 1769–76. Josiah Wedgwood the potter and porcelain maker drew great inspiration from the reproductions presented in Hamilton's volumes.<br> While widely recognized for their beauty the reproductions from Hamilton's vases have become evidence of the irreconcilable problem of neoclassicism in the Romantic period. Significant changes in the way the vases were engraved over a span of thirty or forty years demonstrate how an immutable collection of objects is subject to radical shifts in representation in response to the social and artistic styles of the time. hardcover

Hamilton, RA, William (1751 - 1801), artist; engravings by Gabrieli and Bonato.
Le Hiver. L'Autumne; Le Printemps; L'Eté. Later printings of the 4 colour aquatints.
18th Century. 4 colour aquatints on rag paper. Sheet size 41.5 x 34.5 cm. Hamilton pinx. Gabrieli & Bonato sculp. William Hamilton RA 1751 - 1801:RA Collection: People and Organisations.Born in Chelsea West London in 1751 Hamilton spent time studying in Italy before entering the Royal Academy Schools in 1769. Although he had previously studied architectural draughtsmanship he chose to pursue painting at this time. He exhibited four paintings at the Royal Academy in 1774 and by 1789 was elected as a Royal Academician. In the early part of his career Hamilton focused on portraitur but he later began to paint subjects from poetry history and the Bible.Hamilton was also employed by print galleries to illustrate popular themes and literature. His representations of Shakespearean scenes were not well-received but his rural scenes were fashionable. Perhaps the most popular of these were his illustrations to James Thomson’s The Seasons 1730. This poem describes rural Britain and reflects on the role nature plays as an intermediary between Heaven and Earth. Hamilton’s illustrations such as The Monarch Swain were published in 1797 engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi RA and P.W. Tomkins. There is a copy of the book in the Royal Academy Library. 18th Century unknown

Hammer Creek Press Fass John S. engravings by John DePol Valenti Angelo and Burton Carnes
The Work of the Hammer Creek Press 1950-1956
New York: Hammer Creek Press 1956. Original Wrappers. Near Fine binding. 12mo. 24 4 blank1 pp. illus. Limited edition to approximately 100 copies. As issued in marbled paper wrappers of stiff covers with printed paper title label on the front cover. Quite a nice copy with little in the way of shelf-rubbing to the cover; Reynolds Stone-designed bookplate of noted collector Norman Sondheim inside the front cover. <br /> <br /> Short introduction by Fass about the history and aim of the press. Includes 43 described books announcements and ephemera from the press. As this present work is the 43rd item in Fass's list and only 35th in Cohen's checklist there are apparently inclusions here not noted in Cohen. Several examples of pressmarks by DePol Angelo and Carnes. Two by Valenti Angelo are done in multiple colors with gilding. <br /> <br /> The Hammer Creek Press began when in 1950 when Fass purchased from Valenti Angelo a small Hughes & Kimber cast iron press previously owned by Bruce Rogers who had sold it to Angelo the year before. It was on this press of significant provenance that the bulk of the Hammer Creek Press editions were printed including this present book. Opening this work is an engraving by John DePol of the storied press with a page of "Data" by Fass. One of the mores substantial works issued by the Press as well as one of the more uncommon titles despite the larger-than-usual limitation. As more than 30 institutions are reporting ownership according to OCLC it means this is increasingly rare in commerce. A lovely example of Fass's work. Cohen 35. Hammer Creek Press unknown

Hanko, Hans, Maler und Graphiker (1923-1992).
Eigenh. Skizzenbuch. O. O., 1960er Jahre.
