Bishop, James [writer of verses]; engravings by various eminent artists
The Painted Picture Play-Book. Illustrated with upwards of Three Hundred Coloured Pictures and an Explanatory Verse to Each
London: Dean and Son. First edition presumed. Paper on boards. Fair. N.d. circa 1850s. Folio 13.5 by 10 inches. Not paginated 33 leaves including title page with printing on only one side per leaf. Wonderful hand-colored illustrations by unnamed artists but many with the qualiy of Tenniel. Some form part of a loose story narrative and others are part of a looser verse bond. Particularly appealing are the feline illustrations which come in several places most notably part of "The Cat Party". The leaves do not appear to have been bound in a proper order as this particular narrative moves in reverse. It is all somewhat chaotic yet charmingly so. Also a stand-out is the imagery of the "London Toy Warehouse". While some of the animal imagery is straightforward and pedestrian this is more than dominated by that which is humorous unexpected and inspired. The book was surely intended both to instruct and amuse and it is this twin objective that underlies its dual tone. The boards which are covered by illustrated paper pasted on are soiled and chewed up in the corners and the edges are rough. There are a fair number of closed tears inside near the front that were less than deftly repaired with tape some of which remains. Some soilage throughout. Still most of the imagery remains bright and appealing. Dean and Son unknown

Sunshine and Shadow in New York
J. B. Burr and Company 1868-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. History of New York Bound in publisher's cloth. Hardcover. Good binding and cover. Spine image rubbed. 718 2 p. 12 leaves of plates : ill. ; 23 cm. "Rising immigration and increasing social stratification affected the development of American cities during the mid-nineteenth century. City guides delineating the mysteries of the metropolis as well as newspapers magazines and novels presented the East's industrializing cities—New York Philadelphia and Baltimore—as fractured societies. According to these publications each was really two cities: one orderly prosperous and bathed in "sunlight" the other menacing poor and steeped in "darkness" or "gaslight". In this frontispiece from the 1868 Sunshine and Shadow in New York the symbolic extremes of day and night were represented by a Fifth Avenue mansion and the Old Brewery an infamous "thieves' den" located in the Five Points slum district. The first two works here contain portraits of beautiful women both real society belles and heroines of bestselling romances. The latter two transport the armchair traveller to the wilds of Wales to the Austrian and Italian Alps and to the Rhine River. Although in black and white the engravings are so detailed and finely executed particularly in the use of shadow and light that both portraits and landscapes come to life. In the days before photography--much less streaming videos--books like these brought beauty and imagination into everyday lives.</p>
