Man has a moustache and is wearing a three-piece suit with a standup collar on the shirt. Girl and woman are sitting side-saddle and wearing long-sleeved dresses. The Broadmoor Seven Falls are in South Cheyenne Cañon near Colorado Springs Colorado. It has been a privately owned tourist attraction since it opened in the early 1880s. By the late 1890s there was a burro stand where tourists such as this family could rent burros to climb the trails in what has been called the "Grandest Mile of Scenery" in Colorado. In Good Condition: photograph is slightly faded; edges are rubbed; 2 small indentations on the face of the girl; loss from one corner of the card mount. unknown

Three photographic prints each approx 11 x 20 cms and three black and white engravings together 33.5 x 20.4 cms all captioned printed on two conjoined newspaper leaves pp 645-648 41 x 28.5 cms the associated articles: "Samoa in War-Time" in full with a cameo portrait of the Chief Justice of Samoa and "The Philippine Revolt." partial with a small sketch map of Malolos printed on the verso central fold a few small edge tears and faint toning but in good condition. Malcolm Ross the author and photographer of "Samoa in War-time" was a New Zealand freelance journalist and war correspondent for the New Zealand press as well as the Melbourne Age. In 1899 he spent three months in Samoa covering the clashes for the leadership of the colony that followed the death of Malietoa Laupepa the incumbent chief at the time. <br>Unusual late 19th Century coverage of Samoa especially by a New Zealand photojournalist. <br> <br>The second spread with the incomplete accompanying article by Joh F. Bass a "Special Correspondent of "Harper's Weekly" on "The Philippine Revolt" has an unsurprising pro-American tone: the armed conflict between the First Philippine Republic and the United States 1899-1902 was clearly viewed by the United States as an insurrection rather than as a continuation of the struggle for independence by Filipino nationalists that had begun in 1896 with the Philippine Revolution. . Very light toning to the extremities and covers; nevertheless a very nice copy. Bookplate of noted collector Norman Sondheim on the verso of the front wrappers. <br /> <br /> Comprises title page/announcement; two engravings one of the Hell-Box Press and the second the Hammer Creek Press; and a colophon. The Hell-Box Press was one of Fass's earlier printing endeavors. Hammer Creek Press began when in 1950 when Fass purchased from Valenti Angelo a small iron press previously owned by Bruce Rogers who had sold it to Angelo the year before. It was on this press of significant provenance that the bulk of the Hammer Creek Press editions were printed few of which have stated limitations. With only 4 institutions reporting ownership according to OCLC it is difficult to imagine this title was produced in an edition of more than a few dozen copies if that. Engravings are of "The Hell-Box Press" "The Hammer Creek Press" and "Along the Hammer Creek." An additional pressmark by DePol on the title page. As is frequently the case with Fass's small print runs frequently there are difference with an edition; in this instance the portfolio differs from others we've seen and what Cohen describes this with a printed label using DePol's pressmark we have seen others that are stamped in gold using a turtle pressmark designed for the Press by Burton Carnes. Additionally the title leaf is set in upper and lower case italics and is within a border and without a date we have see it set in all capitals without border and is dated 1952—though Cohen suggest the date is actually 1953. Backed in green goatskin with various shades of green goat over both front and rear boards creating a tryptic each with onlays of white and tan goat with gold and blind tooling. <br /> <br /> A beautiful binding that draws its inspirations from Bates's three engravings. Accompanying the binding are two paper portfolios: one issued by the publisher containing a single sheet with all three engravings used in the text signed by Bates and numbered 9/100; also contained is the prospectus. A second portfolio was made by Fox and contains templates and elements of the design 3 photographs of creek banks which surely informed Fox's design and promotional material for the Cincinnati Book Arts Society 2013 exhibition with this binding as the photograph. Bound in 19th century paper over boards with morocco title label on the spine; all 46 copperplate engravings are present some folding some full page some in-text. The paper at both outer hinges is splitting but the covers are solidly attached; light wear to the extremities; a handsomely simple binding; contents are evenly and moderately foxed; a few of the folding plates have early and tasteful mends to a fold—minimal and not distracting and most importantly effective. <br /> <br /> Originally issued in Latin in 1511 In Praise of Folly "is a brilliant biting satire on the folly to be found in all walks of life. The book stemmed from the decision which Erasmus had taken when he left Rome to come to England that no form of preferment could be obtained at the sacrifice of his freedom to read think and writing what he liked. In it Kings and Popes Princes of the Church and temporal rulers are alike shown to be ruled by Folly and it seems almost inconceivable that an age of absolute authority should have allowed him to remain unscathed. The work was first secretly printed in Paris and as in other cases its immediate success safeguarded him from the consequences of his audacity. . . . Whenever tyranny or absolute power threatened The Praise of Folly was re-read and reprinted" PMM 43. Here offered in an early English translation with 46 engravings after drawings by Hans Holbien. While it is self-styled the fourth edition the earliest edition issue by Wilford that is held by any institution according to OCLC is the third edition 1722; and it is fairly uncommon in libraries with scarcely more than two dozen copies held.
