This book is generally regarded as one of the finest from the press which is known for the excellence of its letterpress printing and book design.<br /> <br /> The edition size was 270 copies of which this is one of 60 deluxe copies bound in quarter-leather and paper printed with an engraved design by Roy. These copies numbered with Roman numerals are signed by both Roy and Roethke who died soon after the printing was completed. Roethke won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for poetry. First edition first printing deluxe issue. A fine copy no. XXX of 60 signed by Roethke and Roy. Contemporary previous owner's inscription in ink on half-title and at upper margin of frontispiece not affecting the image. Sporadic age-toning and foxing throughout. Some closed tears at verso of six double-leaved plates were repaired with tape. Minor and sporadic previous owner's underlining in blue ink throughout. Fore-edge of a few pages in second part are partly water-stained never affecting lettering. Text in Latin with some French. Binding in overall good interior in good to good condition. Limited Edition. Very Good. Slim quarto 28 cm Thirty loose woodcut plates on age-toned paper measuring 18.5 cm wide by 27 cm tall. No text or publication information present only the plates. Housed in a folder of 1/4 brown cloth with tan paper over boards and a gilt stamped title on the front board. The folder is toned and lightly rubbed at the edges. The first plate is signed by Molnár in pencil and numbered # 20 in an edition of only 36. <br /> <br /> The painter and graphic artist Pál Molnár-C. 1894-1981 born in Battonya Hungary lived and worked in a villa located in Ménesi Street on the hillside of Gellért Hill Budapest for 50 years. He held the surrealist style close to his heart throughout his life and he was also heavily inspired by the Symbolist works of Ferdinand Hodler. His illustrations of Shakespeare's Corialanus and Rostrand's Cyrano de Bergerac earned him gold medals at salons in Paris Milan and Warsaw. After his death his younger daughter Dr. Éva Csillag Pálné set up a family-owned private museum in 1984.<br /> <br /> “As a matter of fact all art is more or less surreal. Contents clean and tight. Corners of boards bumped. Slight wear to edges of boards. Else in good plus to very good condition. Each plate numbered and signed by the artist with limitation of 50 noted in pencil. This book is one of only 50 copies produced. The text was set in Bulmer and printed on a Chandler and Price hand press on Rives lightweight; etchings are intaglio: inked wiped and printed by hand on a Charles Brand etcher's press using dampened Rives heavyweight. Binding is sewn on cords and covered with Fabriano and raw linen. Headbands hand-sewn. Printed and bound by Louise A. Moss Excalibur Press in 1965. Excalibur Press hardcover

Contains six beautiful copperplate engravings by the decorated Dutch sculptor Ru van Rossem well known for his sculptures pen drawings lithographs wood and copper engravings as well as set and costume designs. Printed on English handmade paper by John Roberts Press engravings on Japanese vellum. <br /> <br /> A pupil of Jam van Tongeren and Arend Hendriks Ru van Rossem 1924-2007 taught at the Great Yarmouth College of Art while he lived in England. For almost twenty years he was a lecturer at the Tilburg Academy and among other awards was appointed Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion in 2003.<br /> <br /> Spine and left Moroccan panel on front cover faded with very light wear at along edges slightly more pronounced at head and tail of spine.
