Somerset de Chair (Translator, Editor, Author of Introduction); Clifford Webb (Wood Engravings)
The First Crusade; The Deeds of the Franks and Other Jerusalemites.
Waltham Saint Lawrence: The Golden Cockerel Press 1945. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Webb Clifford. One of 500 copies folio size pp. The Golden Cockerel Press came together in autumn of 1920 at a time when post-World War I society was ushering in a renaissance of creative minds including another renaissance of the printing press as the artist's tool similar to that of William Morris and the arts and crafts printers of the previous century. The press worked with many notable artists including Eric Gill Blair Hughes-Stanton Robert Gibbings and the artist for this work Clifford Webb.

Clifford Cyril Webb 1895-1972 studied art and is best known today for his wood engravings. He was a founder-member of the Society of Wood Engravers and "was a prominent figure in the group of engravers whobrought about the revival of wood engraving in the 1920s and benefited from the encouragement of Robert Gibbings and the Golden Cockerel Press" n.b. quote from Webb's entry in Horne "The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators" p. 437.

Per the bibliographical entry for this work "it is surprising that no complete translation of this unique eye-witness account of the First Crusade had ever been published in England before. What the pilgrims did in their fervour of blind fanaticism 'to the glory of God' makes astonishing reading!"

___DESCRIPTION: Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in half vellum with orange buckram boards gilt vignette on the front board of crusaders on horseback by Clifford Webb top edge gilt frontis one of five full-page wood-engravings bound in throughout small title page wood-engraving also of crusaders on horseback wood-engraving of a cockerel holding a crusader pennant in its beak on p. 9; Poliphilus type on hand-made paper folio size 12 3/8" by 7 3/8" pagination: 1-4 5-92 1 colophon.

___CONDITION: A solid very good copy with clean boards the vellum smooth and without wear a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; a small mark on the vellum on the back board light overall edgewear the corners bumped but not rubbed.

___CITATION: Cockalorum 168.

___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Rousseau, Jean-Jacques; Hedouin, Edmond (Engravings)
The Confessions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau
n.p. Edinburgh: Privately Printed by Oliver and Boyd 1904. Hardcover. Near fine. Hedouin Edmond. Two volumes complete large octavo size 735 total pp. Jean-Jacques Rousseau's 1712-1778 philosophy heavily influenced his contemporaries and helped to usher in the Age of Enlightenment which subsequently influenced "the development of modern political economic and educational thought" n.b. quote from Wiki.

This work published posthumously was in many ways the first of its kind: very few autobiographies had been published up to this point and those had a clearly religious focus Augustine's "Confesssions" and St. Teresa's "Life". While scholars debate the exact veracity of many points in Rousseau's "Confessions" they are notable for being "one of the first autobiographies in which an individual wrote of his own life mainly in terms of his worldly experiences and personal feelings" ibid.

Although first published much earlier than 1904 this work claims to be the first "unexpurgated" version; given that topics such as romantic relationships Rousseau had and the disposition of children born to him out of wedlock we are not surprised they were issued as a privately printed work.

With thirteen reproductions of "a series of etchings" by Pierre Edmond Alexandre Hédouin 1820-1889 whose works are found in many of the world's major art galleries including the National Gallery of Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

___DESCRIPTION: Both volumes bound in half red leather over marbled paper boards gilt lettering and rules on the spines matching endpapers a different frontis portrait of Rousseau in each volume title pages in red and black with six etchings in Volume I and seven in Volume II all with original tissue guards; large octavo size 9 7/16" by 6" pagination: Vol. I i-vii viii-xix 3 1-281 and Vol. II i-vii viii-xv 3 1-414.

___CONDITION: Volumes near fine overall with clean boards straight corners with minimal rubbing a strong square text blocks with solid hinges the interiors clean and bright all illustrations present as called for note that the signatures in Vol. II are mostly unopened and hence unread the set free of prior owner markings other than a small label with the number "33" in Vol. II at the fore-edge corner of the front pastedown likely a private library label; some light rubbing at the spines corners and bottom edges the red colour on the spines somewhat uneven and light dustiness to the top edges of the text block; still overall a near fine set.

___POSTAGE: Please note that due to weight additional postage may apply; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Fr. Vincent McNabb, OP.; Derrick, Thomas (Wood Engravings) O. P.
God's Book; And Other Poems
Ditchling Sussex: St Dominic's Press 1930. First and Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Derrick Thomas. No. 49 of 480 copies octavo size 45 pp. The Saint Dominic's Press founded by Harry Hilary Douglas Clarke Pepler flourished at Ditchling Sussex from 1916 to 1936. The first home of the Press was "a disused stable" with a hundred-year-old Stanhope hand-press which supposedly had belonged to William Morris. Pepler endeavored to do everything possible by hand believing that such would both produce the best results and also be a "more individual or 'humane'.product". He therefore "preferred the handpress to the machine handmade to machine-made paper and handset founder's type to the products of typesetting machines."

Pepler met Edward Johnston and Eric Gill while living in Hammersmith; Pepler and his family would eventually move to Ditchling to join Gill who was one of the most important artists to provide illustrations for the St. Dominic's Press. Other artists who provided illustrations included David Jones Desmond Chute Philip Hagreen and Thomas Derrick among others.

This a fascinating association copy: inscribed in the year of publication by Bede Jarrett OP "an English Dominican friar and Catholic priest who was a noted historian and author.who formally reinstated the Dominican order at the University of Oxford for the first time since the dissolution of the monasteries under King Henry VIII." Fr. Jarrett inscribed the volume in the front free endpaper: "For Mother Prioress O.P. / on / Sept. 8: 1930 her silver / Jubilee / from / F. Bede Jarrett O.P.". The Mother Prioress according to an inked notation next to the inscripton is Sr. M. Hyacinth Graham O.P. of whom alas we were unable to find any additional information.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in quarter black cloth over paper covered boards title in gilt on the spine Ex-Libris of the Dominican Nuns St. Dominic's Priory Carisbrooke Isle of Wight on the front pastedown to which order presumably Sr. Graham belonged inscription on the front free endpaper as described above black and white reproduction of a portrait of Fr. McNabb by Kenneth Green on blue paper as the frontispiece title page with the press device of Eric Gill three wood engraved illustrations by Thomas Derrick throughout St. Dominic p. 4; Mary as Queen of Heaven p. 12; and Christ Crucified p. 37; octavo size 8 3/4" by 6" pagination: i-vi 1-39.

___CONDITION: Very good with clean boards the top corners lightly bumped the bottom corners straight all without rubbing a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright the sole prior owner markings we see the Ex-Libris and inscription both as described above; we had a professional name available upon request repair a split joint and the head and tail of spine very slight indentation to the top of both boards light residue at the tail of the spine presumably from a former library label; please note this copy is missing the tipped-in errata slip called for in the bibliography.

___CITATION: Saint Dominic's Press Bibliography no. A188.

___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Louis Victor. Engravings by Sellier Barabe Berthault Poulleau and Michelinot
Salle de Spectacle de Bordeaux
Parias: Chez Esprit. Printer: L'Imprimerie Calleau 1782. First Edition. Half Calf. Paper pastedown on boards. The paper pastedown in done in a tree calf pattern that from a short distance is very convincing and gives the volume a full calf appearance. Near Fine. A stunning work that celebrates a late Ancien Regime architectural masterpiece one that still stands and is among the glories of Bordeaux and one of the most beautiful of theatres built anywhere. Elephantine Folio 64.5 by 49 cm. Title leaf dedication leaf 10 2 22 numbered engraved illustrated plates. 23 engraved plates in all including the Dedication. The Dedication page features a large and impressive copper engraving -- a cartouche in its way but without the ornamental border that characterizes the form -- of two eagles and several allegorical props such as a sword and scroll. This illustration takes up more than a third of the page and actually nearly overlaps the writing. After the text written in a large font the engravings include a large and rather ornamental city map that zooms into the local area surrounding the site of the theatre. Nine of the engravings are "blue prints of the floor plans for the theatre -- these also are quite lovely with details such as the ceiling frescos rendered in minute detail. Four plates give the exterior elevations of the building. Four plates render the interior as cut-aways as if sliced open. Next come two plates showing the theatre as one might experience it during the night of a performance with people milling about etc. The final plate shows a simplified bird's eye view floor plan of fourteen other prominent theatres of the day with the Bordeaux theatre serving as the centerpiece vignette. Almost all of these theatres used a horseshoe seating arrangement that was followed in the Bordeaux theatre. The Grand Théâtre of Bordeaux is a neo-Classical building with a front of Corinthian columns a disciplined symmetry carried out and notwithstanding plenty of ornamental touches a simplicity and restraint that sets it apart from the Rococo that had previously held sway in public buildings. The building was completed in 1780 two years prior to this magisterial work about its design. It was under construction for almost seven years prior to that under a commission from the then Duke of Richelieu who was the Governor of Guyenne from the same family as Cardinal Richelieu who served under Louis XIII during the prior century. The architect Victor Louis who also is the credited author of this work went on to design the gardens and galleries surrounding the Palais Royal and the whole building itself of Théâtre Français in Paris the home of the Comédie-Française. Later architects too were inspired by the Louis building most notably perhaps is the emulation of the grand staircase in the design of the Palais Garnier in Paris which opened nearly a century after the Bordeaux theatre. The latter incorporated elements Louis first worked out in the Bordeaux theatre. The Bordeaux theatre is the home of the Opera National and Ballet National of Bordeaux. Condition: Foxing mostly light and mostly confined to the margins where there is also darker age toning than elsewhere on the leaves. The foxing is a bit more intrusive on the text leaves. No where though is either issue -- the age toning or the foxing at a disconcerting level in our view. The calf has some light rubbing along the joints as do the edges of the volume from shelfwear and moderate use. A few scratches and stains on the faux calf of the boards again something not bothersome and might even enhance the illusion of another material. Chez Esprit. Printer: L'Imprimerie Calleau unknown
